DOUG & WALTER is about the bizarre road trip of two outsiders in the midst of the Swiss hills. Doug and Walter are an uneven couple. Doug, a US American in his 50s with a burnout has just been fired. Driven by an outlaw fantasy, he wants to paint the town red. Walter, his former co-worker, is a shy guy and admires Doug for his bold behavior. Together they hit the road and run from adventure to adventure; with fatal consequences.

DIRECTORS STATEMENTI was 14 when I first visited a film festival. Feeling inspired I shot two short documentaries a few years later: 14 and SCHRITT FÜR SCHRITT that both won national prices.
After these two rather serious films, I wanted to try something new. I was especially eager to create a balancing act of different genres that I have not seen on Swiss screens so far. I was inspired by road and buddy movies, westerns and splatter movies. It lead to DOUG & WALTER that debates the issues of profes-sional setbacks, addiction to pills and delusions in a playful way.
The prairie, two outlaws looking for freedom and adventures: Wyatt & Billy, Duke & Gonzo, Bonny & Clyde, Thelma & Louise. Why not Doug & Walter?
It is all about the aspect of freedom that fascinates me about western and road movies. More precisely, the depiction and the feeling of freedom conveyed. I asso-ciate freedom with a movement – on the road – away from the monotony and sorrows seemingly incompa-tible with everyday life. In DOUG & WALTER the desire for freedom ends in a catastrophe.
Doug’s character is based on people from my inner circle that are at risk of a burnout. I was wondering what would happen if they would completely loose it and attempt to break out of the Swiss system. Doug is a driven and crazy dropout trying to raise a mo-
nument before restarting at the promising distance. Walter portrays Doug’s exact opposite. He is a nar-row-minded Swiss following rules and avoiding argu-ments. Walter accepts his life the way it is although he is standing offside. He secretly admires Doug. Being outsiders connects them.
Doug, Walter and the world they live in are portrayed deliberately exaggerated. Through this humoristic approach I’d like to make the audience reflect on their own comfort zones and scrutinise their environment. Having said that, I wanted that DOUG & WALTER can be watched in two ways: as a sassy and laconic balancing act of different genres or as a socio-critical and slightly cynical comedy-drama. Since it backfires as soon as naïve Walter takes the initiative for the first time. His break out of his victim role ends as fast as it began. Walter gets prosecuted for the robbery of a gas station that Doug committed. Doug and Walter imme-diately get punished for breaking out of the system. That is the drama.

PRODUCERS NOTEWe met Samuel Morris at the ‘Jugendfilmtage’ in 2013, where he was asked on stage for a second time: in 2013 he came in first with his film SCHRITT FÜR SCHRITT whereas in 2011 he finished second with ‘14’. ‘14’ also won the Basler Filmpreis. He was only 17 when he finished this film.
DOUG & WALTER is Samuel Morris’ first professio-nally produced film. We are proud to have been part of it and we will no doubt hear far more from him in the years to come.
At such a young age Samuel Morris has an asto-nishing clear, creative and complete vision of every aspect of filmmaking: from directing the actors to composing the pictures and arranging the sound. His remarkable talent did not only impress us, but also the whole cast and crew supporting this project. We should also highlight that Samuel Morris is self-taught and did not study at a film school yet.
The story of DOUG & WALTER excels in its wit, irony and creative playfulness. A wild mix of genres in the midst of the Swiss alpine landscape: a robbery at
a petrol station that was almost balked by a crossword puzzle, an introduction of the main character who deserves this title, and Walter’s little hero’s journey and big emancipation, which finds its end due to a coincidence at the beginning… What’s the moral of the story? Breaking out of the system is not possible. Well, some people might find this a little far-fetched and, admittedly, this statement should be read with a wink. However, the final product is what counts: crea-tive and sassy, this is an impressive cinematographic work by a young Swiss talented filmmaker.
