Concept of internationalisation:Concept of internationalisation:defining the differencedefining the difference

“Internationalization is the process of integrating an international, intercultural and global dimension in the purposes, functions and delivery of higher education”

(to J. Knight 1994)

Concept of internationalisationConcept of internationalisation4 different approaches4 different approaches

Process approachThe process approach frames internationalization as a process which integrates an international dimension or perspective into major functions of the institutions. Terms such as infuse, integrate, permeate and incorporate are used to characterize the process.

Activity approachThe activity approach describes internationalization in terms of categories or types of activities such as curriculum development, scholar/student exchange and technical cooperation.

Concept of internationalisationConcept of internationalisation4 different approaches4 different approaches

Competency approachThe competency approach looks at internationalization in terms of developing new skills, attitudes and knowledge in students, faculty and staff. The focus is clearly on the human dimension and not on academic activities or organizational issues.

Organizational approachThe fourth approach focuses on developing an ethos or culture in the institution that values and supports international and intercultural perspectives and initiatives.
