• Nepal is among the poorest andleast developed countries in theworld, with almost one-third of itspopulation living below thepoverty line. Agriculture is themainstay of theeconomy, providing a livelihoodfor three-fourths of the populationand accounting for about one-third of GDP.
• Industrial activity mainly involvesthe processing of agriculturalproducts, includingpulses, jute, sugarcane, tobacco,and grain. During the globalrecession of 2009, remittancesfrom foreign workers abroadincreased 47% to $2.8 billion whiletourist arrivals only decreased 1%compared to the previous year.

Nepal has considerable scope for exploiting itspotential in hydropower, with an estimated42,000 MW of feasible capacity, but politicalinstability hampers foreign investment.Additional challenges to Nepal's growth includeits technological backwardness, landlockedgeographic location, civil strife and labor unrest,and its susceptibility to natural disaster.
