Colour - I never tire of waking to a beautiful summer sunrise. The sun glowing on the mountainsides, accentuating the deep greens against the golden hues of its rays, both in contrast to the bright blues of the sky. However, my most favourite moment of the day is when the sun has set behind the mountains, and they become silhouettes in the skyline. Everything takes on a different look and shade, and it’s breathtaking.

Escape - Longer, warmer days bring increased opportunities to get out and explore. I often find myself wandering on paths and trails, on foot but more often on bike, escaping the noise and stress of a busy day for the quiet solitude of nature.

Challenge - When I used to visit Fernie, I would meet people and attend events that made me want to try harder, to get involved, to learn something new. This has only continued since I moved back, as the number of fascinating people and amazing events you’re exposed to in Fernie is growing exponentially.

Social - While summer may provide the ease of escape, it also accentuates Fernie’s social side. People move about more freely, walking or taking their townie from patio to

patio, chatting with friends or making new ones. They organize events or attend them. They come out of their winter shells and are present in the community.

Energy - Maybe it’s in the water or the air, or because we’ve been recluse throughout the winter and are now experiencing colour, finding escape, challenging ourselves and socializing, regardless there is a heightened energy about town and its people. Come visit, you’ll know what I mean.

Summer FactsLocation: Southeast corner of British Columbia, Canada, fully encircled by the Canadian Rockies. Just 45 minutes from both the Alberta and US borders.

Population: 4,448 permanent residents with an additional 2,000 outside city limits and a substantial seasonal population. There are 2,848 private dwellings in Fernie.

Temperature: Average temperature is between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius June through September.

Bike Trails: Roughly 70 trails in Ridgemont, Castle Mountain, Mount Fernie and Fernie and Hosmer Ridges. Fernie Alpine Resort has approximately 37 trails on top of this.

Golfing: There are more than 15 golf courses within an hour from Fernie.

Hiking: There are roughly 20 hiking trails in Fernie including those at Fernie Alpine Resort and Island Lake Lodge, and many day trip options to explore.

Fishing: Fernie boasts world-class fly fishing on the Elk River and its’ tributaries.

The Lake District: Just 30 minutes west of Fernie, approximately ten lakes to visit on a hot day.

Fernie’s Name: William Fernie founded this town on one of his prospecting trips in 1897.

uEach spring as we put together the Fernie Fix – Summer Guide, I brainstorm on new and exciting ways to share all that makes Fernie such an amazing place to spend time. As you flip through this guide you will find that there is an incredible amount on offer in this Valley, but outside of these palpable experiences there are additional aspects to Fernie difficult to share that are equally as important in regards to its summertime allure.

When I imagine summertime in Fernie, many words come to mind but these five and their meanings hold the most value. I hope this provides a glimpse of what you’ll experience when here, and creates anticipation for your journeys in Fernie this summer.

u“The photos from your helicopter portrait sessions were the reason we chose Fernie for our wedding location.”

This quote stunned me when I recently met with some prospective clients from Calgary over drinks at Picnic. Like many young artists, my goals when I first started Raven Eye Photography were to actually make a living doing what I loved, and sincerely hoping that one day my work would influence people’s lives in a positive way. Now, to be

achieving both feels wonderful and is a great accomplishment.

I have always loved flying, so the idea of combining photography with flight came pretty early on in my business model. What I discovered was a small but receptive, and very rewarding market for helicopter-access portrait shoots. Working closely with Greg Goodison at Ascent Helicopters I found a variety of stunning alpine locations to fly people to. No one has ever come away disappointed from these trips into the mountains around Fernie – kids absolutely love it on family portrait shoots, and couples find it the perfect adventure for their wedding day or engagement photos.

Fernie has so much to offer as a town and with its surroundings, the possibilities for recreation are endless. I’ve taken portraits of people snowmobiling, fly fishing, ATV’ing, skiing, rock climbing, mountain biking… pretty much any activity you can think of! I also have the privilege of covering fun annual events like the TransRockies, Tears & Gears, and TwoKnee races to name a few.

Having growing up in Fernie I’ve seen a lot of change over the years. It’s great to see sustainable growth with tourism having a

major influence on local industry. I hope people continue to visit us, and when they see all this valley has to offer, perhaps decide to stay. I can only dare to hope my photos will draw more people seeking beauty and adventure to the amazingly scenic Elk Valley.

Why do you think people come for the winter, but stay for the summer?

There is more to Fernie than just legendary powder and stunning mountain scenery. Summer days here are long and warm, full of adventure and tranquility.

What is your idea of a perfect Fernie day?

A morning of biking with friends, a little afternoon fishing, and an evening BBQ on the deck while watching the sunset over the Lizard Range.

uThe number and quality of recreational opportunities in Fernie grows with each year, offering such an array of activities that it’s impossible to choose what to include in your summer vacation, or stay-cation for that matter. Art Safari camp is an age appropriate day camp for children ages 6-10. Campers will learn techniques in drawing, painting, printmaking, mixed media, sculpture and theatre while learning about new cultures and art history. Campers will take part in the process of creating characters, props and scenery for an end of week performance as well as an art show for family and friends. Operation Art - Wednesdays, July 4-August 22

From 9:30-11:30am for children ages 5-10, this is a drop-in only program allowing children to complete one pottery piece and one fibre based creation to take home. $15 for one child, $12 for any additional siblings.

Preschool Kids Summer Fun Days – Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 10-August 23

From 10am-12:30pm, kids ages 3-6 are invited to the Arts Station to create art. Each class begins with drawing activities in a sketchbook, allowing them to see how they’ve improved over the summer. Pre-register ($20 or $35 for both) or drop in ($25) – maximum of 15 kids can participate.

Youth Summer Theatre Camp – August 7-17, 9am-2pm

Join theatre professional Denise Baughan in this two-week camp that is sure to leave youth with an enthusiasm for the performing arts and a solid foundation of theatrical skills. Week One will be focused on skill development and set design and construction.

Week Two will be dedicated to the actual performance that is the culmination of everything that they have learned throughout this amazing theatre camp, taking place Friday, August 17 at 6pm.

Daily camps are available for your children, Kindergarten to Grade 6, from June 21 to July 20 this summer through Fernie School Aged Care. Each day there is a different theme, including Garden, Art, Photography, Super-Hero, Picnic, Biking and more. The camps run 9-5pm and are $30 per day, or $150 per week. uMountain High Adventures Camp, Mondays to Fridays July and August

Mountain High Adventures Camp is for kids and teenagers aged 12-17 who want to experience what adventure in Fernie is all about. Learn new skills, experience new activities and meet new friends. These five-day camps (Mon-Fri) are action packed, fun filled and challenging.

uSummer Junior Golf Camps: July 3-5, July 24-26, August 7-9

The Fernie Golf & Country Club offers three junior camps through July and August. The ages welcome are 5 years up to 18 years of age. Each camp is four days (Monday - Thursday) with a wind-up party on the last day. Sessions are one to two hours long depending on the age category. The cost is $40 for 5-6 year olds, $90 for 7-10 year olds and $105 for 11-18 years old and includes professional instruction, a T-shirt, daily prizes and a wind-up green fee with dinner. uFernie Heritage Library Summer Reading Club: Strange But True

Strange But True, this year’s reading club for children aged 6 to 10 is slated to be better than ever. Kids will discover “Wild wild life”; explore world records, travel to outer space, learn about strange physics, cool chemistry and crazy inventions; be introduced to remarkable real-life kids; and play with magic. The Fernie Tennis Club grows each year in members and popularity, and is always accepting new members. They meet in the James White Park Mondays from 6-10pm May through Thanksgiving, weather pending. Trit-Trot Farms runs four children’s camps (July 9-11, July 16-18, July 30-August 1, and August 6-8). These camps focus on fun and safety, training and round pen, parts of the horse, riding lessons, braiding and bandaging, leading, stable management, horse show preparation, arena etiquette, equine trivia, safe trailering, emergency care and feeding. Old Stumpy Loop - Town

Difficulty Level – Green Elevation – just above town Average Time – 1-2 hours

Getting There: You’re in Fernie, you have a couple of hours to spare and wouldn’t mind some exercise – this is for you. From 13th Street heading towards Ridgemont, you’ll pass the New Horizons’ subdivision after crossing the train tracks, and will see a gate leading to a path on your left. This is Old Stumpy. There is minimal parking here, try parking near Isabella Dicken Elementary School on 13th and 2nd Ave.

The Hike: This is a mellow hike alongside Ridgemont Mountain through tall grass and trees with strategically placed benches. These provide great opportunities to sit and take in the stunning views above, and fields, golf course and town below. The trail continues eventually hitting the train tracks, where you will cross and connect with the dike behind the Fernie Golf and Country Club, alongside the Elk River. Eventually you will hit Maiden Lake, where you will turn left following the path behind Extra Foods, the Best Western and the Elk Valley Hospital, and in front of Fernie Secondary School. Here it will connect with 2nd Avenue, and take you back to 13th Street to complete the loop.

Castle Mountain – Town

Difficulty Level – Blue/Black Elevation – 5,280 feet Average Time – 3-5 hours

Getting There: With the addition of Uprooted, Castle Mountain can easily be accessed from town. Take Pine Avenue once you’ve crossed the train tracks, passing the Fernie Aquatic Centre and turn left on Coal Creek Road. You will see a yellow bridge on your right by the old barn. Park here, and take the trail on your left after you cross the bridge, following the flagging as you make your way up the mountain.

The Hike: This hike starts of pretty mellow and progressively gets steeper and more exposed. The beauty of it is there are so many view points along the way, any point you reach is rewarding. Uprooted crosses both the original and new River Road, meandering through trees until it eventually joins Hyperventilation. Take a left, and continue to climb the numerous switchbacks. Soon you will reach the first lookout and bench. From here, it’s a few switchbacks before you meet up with South Castle, taking you to the base of Castle Rocks. Once here, take a left and walk the last steep pitch to Castle Mountain’s rocks, a very worthwhile pinnacle.

Please note: These trails are also used for mountain biking.

Hosmer Mountain – Hartley Lake Road

Difficulty Level – Black Elevation – 7,676 feet Average Time – 4-6 hours

Getting There: Travel north on Highway 3 and take a left on Dicken Road just after the Fernie Chamber of Commerce. Continue on Dicken Road to Hartley Lake Road and turn left, driving ~ 7 kms to the trailhead. It is not well marked, and is located on a turn with a small gravel parking area opposite the trailhead. If you’ve passed Hartley Lake, you’ve gone too far.

The Hike: This is one of the most recognizable mountains in Fernie, alongside the Three Sisters, and standing on its peak is rewarding to say the least. The first section of the trail meanders through thick brush on a switch-backing, dirt trail which continually becomes steeper as you progress. You will reach the Ghostrider Peak, which is roughly 2/3 the way, and can continue along the rockier, steep climb to the “summit”. Caution is recommended when navigating this section, and it is not recommended for children. The vistas at either the Ghostrider Peak or summit are breathtaking, offering different view points of the valley and surrounding mountains.

uBike.For this area, an all mountain bike is recommended (vs. cross country or downhill). This will make you feel more comfortable on steep and technical trails, without the added weight. Of course this is preference, and as you gain experience you will learn what you like and what you don’t like. I personally began on a hard tail, moved to a 4x4 cross country bike, then went all mountain with the Giant Trance X and just came full circle with an XTC 29er hard tail.

If you find the process of deciding on a bike time consuming and confusing, drop into one of the bike shops downtown. The staff are experts in their field and more than happy to utilize their technical savvy intelligence.

uGear.While it’s nice to look good and not stick out like a sore thumb, functionality is key. Here is a list of essentials to work from.

A good helmet that fits properly. Bonus if it looks good.

Pedals and Shoes. If you start out on flat pedals you’ll want a shoe with a soft sole that grips and limits movement. If you’ve decided to give clipless pedals a go, choose one with a platform and a shoe with grips that is easy to walk in.

Pads. It does not feel good when your pedal slams into your shin. Invest in some soft pads to increase confidence while learning - a good investment as you’ll use them on bigger descents as you progress.

Back pack. I recommend one with a 1-2 litre bladder that has room to carry an extra layer, snacks and your tools. (below).

Sunglasses, preferably with changeable lenses. If not choose a lighter shade - think protection and visibility.

Gloves. Full fingered with padding. If your hands go numb, try thicker padding to absorb shock. You’ll undoubtedly have various pairs once you get into the sport, to cover all temperatures and types of rides.

When choosing a pair of shorts consider a longer length (just below the knee), ensure they are seamless in the crotch, and of durable material to withstand any potential impact.

Chami (chamois). If you don’t know what these are you soon will. Ever hop on a bike

after a winter of skiing and woke up the next day with a sore tush? The key is a chami, and this is not the time to skimp. Invest in a few to wear under your shorts and wash after every use.

I like to have an array of jerseys available as the riding season is long and temperature range wide. Sleeveless, short sleeve and long sleeve options, of light weight, breathable material.

Bike socks can be pretty cute, and you may notice many have intricate patterns. Fashion aside, something thin that at least covers the ankles is a good choice. Longer options are available for extra coverage.

uTools. Chains break. Tires go flat. Regardless of the problem it’s a good idea to keep parts and tools in your pack and to learn how to use them. Definitely carry a spare tube (that fits your tire), a Multi-tool, tire pump, SRAM powerlink and chain lube. First aid supplies and more intricate stuff such as a shock pump and spare derailleur hanger are good options as well.

uHydration. It will take time to learn how much you sweat and what you need to re-hydrate. Pay careful attention, as electrolyte balance can make a world of difference in energy and performance. Regardless, you will need more fluid on hot days and on longer rides. I personally like HEED by Hammer Nutrition.

uFuel. Biking burns a lot of calories. Even while learning (maybe more so), you’re exerting yourself more than you’re probably used to. Having enough gas in the tank not only helps with your current ride, it helps on your next. Find out what works for you – gels, bars, energy drinks, fruit, and carry this with you. Also, never go out hungry and eat within 30 minutes after your ride.

uTrail Progression. It’s great to ride with people you feel comfortable with that know where they are going, but make sure they are aware of your ability and comfort zone. Starting with smooth, flowy trails and progressing with your ability and comfort level will increase your confidence. Trails like Old Stumpy, Cemetery Bypass and What’s Up Doc are

a great beginning point. Progress to Blues such as Eric’s Trail, Sidewinder and Dem Bones, and eventually to more technical rides such as Old Goat, Project 9 and Brokeback.

An important aspect of biking is climbing, and at first a wider path or road might feel more comfortable. Consider sticking to trails off Ridgemont Road, the Powerline or Gorby until you gain confidence in climbing but remember there is no shame in walking.

uTips. When climbing, keep your elbows in and enough weight over your front tire to prevent it from lifting. If you do feel it lifting, try gripping your handlebars like you would rev a motorbike, putting pressure against the bars and leaning towards them.

Learn your gears. Knowing how to quickly increase or decrease tension when ascending or descending results in efficiency and consistency.

When descending, stand with your feet level and keep your butt over your rear tire. If you feel your back tire skid, lay off the rear brake (right side). Also for steep terrain you may consider dropping your seat.

Other advice: try to use only one finger on your brakes utilizing the others to grip the handlebars, keep your gaze at least a bike’s length ahead, and speed is your friend!

While biking can be frustrating at times, it’s a fun, challenging and most of all rewarding sport. This list is a good place to start, but remember it’s just that – a starting point. Get out in the bike shops and discuss your needs with the professionals. Great service, quality products and a wealth of knowledge await you. And lastly, have fun because that’s what it’s all about! That and the après of course…

u It seems like it was just yesterday, at the age of six, I was sitting at Bill Moffat’s kitchen table in Kimberly learning how to tie a dry-fly. Now, trying to teach a squirming six year old who wanted nothing more than to be fishing, how to tie a fly must have been a daunting task, if not impossible. But Mr. Moffat gave it his best shot and managed to instill in me a huge desire to fish whenever and wherever I could.

My Dad was not a fly fisherman, so most of my time fishing was spent on a small creek just outside of Kimberly called Cherry Creek. I would wonder the waters with my cousin Kenny or by myself, exploring every little pool and run that I thought may have a fish in it. This to me was the best part of summer - fishing and discovering what I thought were secret spots. Ah, the innocence of youth!

Fast forward fifty or so years, while fishing the upper Wigwam River, a new to the area fly fisherman approached me decked out in new gear fresh off the rack. He asked where I thought he should try his luck. After some consideration I carefully proceeded.

“Take this spot, it’s a good one. I’ll move up a little.”

“Thank you,” he replied with a smile. “Thanks a lot.”

I headed upstream and as I moved around the next bend I looked back and he was into it! There he was staring at that tiny fly hoping that an animal with a tiny brain would come up from the bottom and eat it.

There is just something about dry-flying that demands all of your concentration.

We met again at the end of the day, at a spot where I had hidden my truck (not well enough I guess) and talked about the day’s successes. He hadn’t had a good one and wanted to know what to use and where to go tomorrow. Once again I proceeded carefully, and was starting to know how a Cutthroat feels, sore mouth and all.

Being early in the season I suggested a #14 Blue Winged Olive or a #14 Yellow Bodied Elk Hair Caddis and to concentrate on fishing only longer slower moving water. It was early season and the Cutthroat spawn had just finished, so most fish are either in the slower prime feeding lines at the tail out’s eating, or tucked up tight against the cut banks, stumps and rocks resting. I suggested that he work them all. Ten or twelve good quality

drifts of the fly and if a fish won’t take it, try another fly or move on. There’s lots of river to fish, and it was going to be another great day either way.

As far as where to go the next day I thought for a moment (images of a young boy on Cherry Creek filling my head) and told him that when I first moved to the Valley, the best part of going fishing was discovering new places to fish, and perhaps catching just one large Cutthroat on a dry-fly.

I suggested that he do the same.

Our paths haven’t crossed since. Like me, I suspect, he’s still looking for that special place, where once again he can try to outsmart that animal with the tiny brain, using a tiny dry-fly. If one day he’s approached by a fly fisherman looking for help, hopefully he remembers what I said, and tells him to search for that one in a million spot and catch that one in a million trout. All on his own.

u I have been committed to recreation and a healthy lifestyle since I was in high school. I grew up with Yoga as my mom was an instructor in the 70’s. In 2009 I lived in an ashram in India and completed my Yoga Teacher Training and Reiki Master courses. Upon returning to Fernie, I began sharing my passion with others.

Last year a location became available and I saw this as an opportunity to continue sharing this passion through a warm and welcoming fitness and wellness environment for the many health conscious individuals of Fernie. Vitality Body & Mind opened its doors early January this year.

Vitality has helped me to create a space that allows individuals to focus on both the physical and mental aspects of their lives, and to encourage people to work towards their goals at their level of ability while staying on top of fitness industry standards and trying new activities. This summer we’ll be taking this outside with yoga and bootcamp in the park along with a running club.

Fernie has a very active population. People are keen to try new things to keep their exercise routine exciting. It is so fun working with people committed to their health that are happy and invigorated with life.

Over the years I have enjoyed watching Fernie evolve. Our community has gone from a mining town to a multi-recreational destination. As Fernie continues to draw different types of people there is a demand for more variety in recreational activities

and services. I would like to continue to see the growth in organized races within the community with a focus on family involvement.


Most people come to ski, but after falling in love with the community and the mountain lifestyle want to experience more and stay. Fernie is an amazing place to learn how to mountain bike. I started on a rigid Trek on Deadfall, the dike at the end nearly killed me and the bike.


When the sun shines from morning until night and everyone is happily exhausted from having fun all day!

Exercises for an Active SummeruSummertime means increased activity levels for many of us. Here are some key exercises to enhance your performance, prevent injury and hopefully help you to have more fun while being active.

Including functional exercises into your workout is important for exposing your body to the activation of stabilizers, improving posture, strengthening in multiple planes of movement and building core strength. These exercises can be included in your regular exercise program, performed as a circuit or entirely on their own. With any exercise always maintain good form throughout the movement, adjust the exercise to your own level of intensity and overall ability. Perform 2-3 sets of each exercise for 10-15 reps. Use a moderate tempo and adequate rest period between sets.

This pastime has especially become attractive with the inception of Fernie’s own music festival – Wapiti. In just its second year, it has quickly become a summer staple which residents and visitors alike organize their summer around.

uAugust 8-13 Shambhala Music Festival While the same weekend as Wapiti, Shambhala targets a different crowd with its focus on electronic music talent. u I have always loved shopping and finding those unique pieces in small boutiques. I’ve also always loved art and design. I would get inspired with friends and we would meet to do DIY (do it yourself) projects. Other friends were always interested in joining however

space was limited as we all lived in smaller houses. Therefore I decided to bring the two together and opened Mixed Elements (ME) art + design studio.

I wanted the retail to showcase a variety of items such as clothing, accessories, home decor, toys and art. Our community has so many talented people that can only show off their creations at craft fairs a few times a year, and I thought it would be a great opportunity to offer a retail space they could put their pieces in year round.

The creation of the studio space and sewing lounge was for everyone in Fernie looking for space to work on a project with friends or their children. I wanted the space to inspire people to try new things while at the same time allowing them to socialize with others, get new ideas and think outside the box. I love the upcycled items or a twist on something simple to look modern and functional. I love that everyone has different tastes and style and you never know what will be created.

I have been in Fernie for 12 years and have seen a big change in retail. The shops stay open later in the evenings, and needed clothing and specialty shops have opened

downtown, which is great for both locals and visitors. I feel retail in Fernie is getting better every year and look forward to continuing to be a part of it as it evolves.


There is so much more to explore in the summer - fishing/floating the river, mountain/ trail riding, and hiking to name a few. And then there are the beaches of Koocanusa.... need I say more?


Morning run, go for a hike with the dogs, ride the townie to a friend’s for a BBQ, and a couple of cold ones!

uOpening Lunch Box was my first attempt in the restaurant world. I’ve been in retail for nearly 15 years and needed a change…or more like a challenge.

I have had a number of health challenges in my life, and the one thing that keeps me healthy is my diet. I realized that there was a lack of fresh food and vegetables available for the working community and began talking about an idea for a restaurant years ago. The

idea was for someone (not us) to offer fresh food made from scratch and oven roast and/or smoke their own meats. After seven years of waiting, my husband looked at me and said, “The kids are in school now, just do it yourself.” And so I did.

Being new to the industry, I based the menu on exactly what I love to eat. Wraps, soups, sandwiches, curries, stews and so many smoothies and fresh juices, with all sauces, dressings, and soups made from scratch. I also set two goals:

1. To provide a place for my family to eat regularly, where I feel good about what they’re eating.

2. To make a difference in people’s diets by cooking from scratch and creating awareness about the kind of food people are putting into their bodies.

The response has been overwhelming. People are looking for fresh food, and that is such an achievement in this day in age with all the fast unhealthy options available around us.

My success in business has always been because I make an effort to be different. Unfortunately for all of us, healthy food made from scratch has become different.


People may be drawn to Fernie for the legendary powder…but while in Fernie they hear all about our fabulous summer and can’t resist staying. Albeit short, summer is beautiful and there is definitely no shortage of activities!


Taking the kids biking around the river and stopping at the park for a picnic… which always ends up at the dirt jump park.


We recently bought an acreage and spend most of our time at our own little retreat enjoying the property and the incredible view. We can dirt bike right from our yard. There’s nothing quite like watching your five and six year old on their own little dirt bikes… life is good.


The people in Fernie are what really make it a great place to live - the nicest, most unique people you’ll ever meet.

uPeople new to Fernie are often surprised by its culinary offerings. It’s not often you find such an array of restaurants in such a small town, or even a small city at that. The food and beverage opportunities grow each year and while each unique in their own right, all provide high quality experiences for their patrons. Your only problem will be choosing. Our suggestion is to leave room in your calendar for more than one!

From the casual café to the cool, eclectic pub to the classy fine dining restaurant, your choice not only depends on the type of food, but the atmosphere and dining experience as well. u I have been in the restaurant and bar industry since I was 15, for 21 years now,

with the hope of running my own restaurant or pub someday. Knowing that the best way to get there was with hands on experience as opposed to schooling, I began the path of management when I was 18. Originally from the lower main land with community populations being well in the 100,000’s, business was a little easier and the competition a lot less than it is in Fernie.

Running the Fernie Pub, we’ve managed to off-set this by maintaining the concept of customer service and personal touch we’ve always practiced. Having a pub/bar in Fernie has been a fantastic experience and is only getting better.

There are many opportunities ahead of us, and it helps to have all establishments trying their best to promote one other and working together to strengthen the industry as a whole, even with it being as competitive as it is.


I think people come to Fernie for the winter to experience the legendary powder, and once they see the natural beauty of this little town and realize there is just as much to do in the summer it becomes home for a lot of people. That’s what happened to me.

u In years past winter in Fernie was renowned for its nightlife opportunities, and it still is. What has changed is summer’s repertoire. From only a few establishments remaining open throughout the season to every single one offering live entertainment and events on a weekly basis, it is obvious that summer, previously known for its daytime draw, has encompassed the night.

On top of establishments’ offerings we have additional events on the calendar such as the popular Wednesday Concerts and Market, the jaw dropping Wam Bam Dirt Jump Jam, and of course Wapiti, among a plethora of others.

Hats off to those stepping it up and meeting the demand for summer entertainment and nightlife. The lineup looks fantastic and we look forward to celebrating another beautiful season in Fernie with you.

uOver the years I’ve heard countless tales of how people got “stuck” in the Elk Valley. My story is similar to many, in that I arrived with plans for one winter season and almost 12 years later, I’m still here. And I can honestly say it’s the summers that keep me going!

My background was in Parks and Recreation but once I arrived in the Elk Valley, it became apparent that my best chance of gaining employment was in Customer Service. Unfortunately for both myself, and any dining establishment silly enough to give me a chance, it appears that I am one of the clumsiest girls in Canada. So I turned my focus to hotels.

In the fall of 2002, I was offered a position working with the Building Services Department at Island Lake Lodge. To be clear, this is actually a glorified term for housekeeping. Best known for being one of the premier catskiing operations in North America, any chance I could get to work for this company was not one I was willing to pass up. Island Lake is a wonderful organization that recognizes the value and potential in its employees. I am a lucky example of this, having been Lodge Manager for over six years now.

When I started working at the Lodge, summer business consisted of lunch service daily from 11-2 in July and August. We now operate June through September, with 26 guest suites in three lodges, two dining rooms, a guided hiking program and a full-service spa. Every year Fernie as a whole is gaining more notoriety as a summer destination.

I love working at Island Lake in the summer, mostly for selfish reasons I suppose. This corner office just can’t be beat. But I also love seeing the look on people’s faces when they arrive after a spontaneous trip up a dirt road through an Old Growth Forest. Resoundingly, the first thing to come out of their mouth is “I had no idea this existed.”

Little by little, I think they’re figuring it out.


For me, when spring hit and the snow melted, it was almost like being in a new town. I can’t put my finger on it exactly but summertime sunshine creates a whole new energy in people around here. You want to get out of the bubble, go to the lake, be outside, take advantage of whatever it is you love doing. We only get so much summer, you gotta enjoy it while you can.


Coffee and crossword in the morning sun, lazy little bike ride uptown to visit with friends, afternoon float down the river, backyard BBQ with (I’m not gonna lie) a few cold beers.


I just enjoy being outdoors, period. Best days off are spent camping out in South Country. I’m a water-baby, so anything that involves the river or the lakes I guess.


That’s the thing about secrets in this town…if you share them, they don’t stay secrets for very long…

uThere are plenty of options when deciding where to stay while visiting Fernie, it just depends on your preference. If you’re looking to camp, reserve that space early in the Provincial Park as it is in high demand! Otherwise, you have hostels, motels, hotels, bed and breakfasts, condominiums, house rentals, and resorts at your service.

It’s important to think about what you will be doing during your stay – will you mainly be in town or at the hill? Are the children joining you? Do you have a vehicle or will you be walking or biking while here? Are you hoping to cook your own food or order in?

We’ve developed a comprehensive guide to assist in this decision, and to hopefully make your stay in Fernie that much more enjoyable.

u In February of 1988, I returned from a role with the Calgary Olympics and wanted a change. And to not stop wearing sweaters and corduroy pants. I could have gone back to my position at a mine north of Elkford, but instead chose to join Fernie Snow Valley (FSV) as one of ten full-time employees. The Sochers also attended the Olympics and had approached me to coordinate and accelerate development at the resort. As a single Dad with two young daughters, I left the security of a big company and started a new journey with FSV.

We extended the natural gas lines to the resort, secured new water sources and drilled water wells in the valley, expanded the water reservoir, installed television cable, created

a resort master plan and had it approved by the government, and submitted a plan for cross-country trails on the east slope of the Lizard Range to stop logging on the mountain slopes. Government officials, politicians and the community wanted progress as Wester Mining was on the brink of bankruptcy. In September, a design charrette was staged at the ski hill. After walking around all parking lots and wooded areas, the resort was designed in an afternoon on a table in the day lodge.

To bring new ideas to Fernie, we arranged for Mayor Mulholland, Councillor Samsonoff, and Muriel McLeod to spend three days in Telluride, America’s fledgling resort at the time with a similar “feel” to Fernie. They met with municipal officials and ski company executives and returned with confidence in Fernie’s future. I also participated in a design workshop in Whistler where I realized that Fernie had the scenery, the river, the main street and most importantly the snow to be a destination.

In late 1990, as the economy was in a recession, I left FSV to start my own enterprise and completed the initial planning and selling of resort properties in Fernie. I hope that everyone understands that change is truly the essence of life, that visionaries should be included and embraced, and that individuals, no matter how they have resided or now call Fernie home be welcomed with a smile.


People are attracted by the snow in Fernie, but soon discover that summer’s season is longer, there are more activities, and with hot days and cool evenings one is well rested. In 1953, the summer business in Zermatt exceeded their winter business and has exceeded winter each and every year. The same trend is now true for other mountain living towns such as Whistler, Canmore, Vail, Aspen, and Chamonix.


With my Grandson Conor, a bike ride along the Emily Brydon Trail adjacent to the Elk River, cycle around Fernie’s flat streets, stop at the Loaf bakery, return home and relax with family and friends in the sunshine.


Each year I have a checklist that includes: sit on the bench atop Castle Mountain to view the sunset, ride in the Highline 100 to the Montana border and back, hike the ridge walk to Polar Peak, walk Fernie’s “Grouse Grind” to the top of Fernie Mountain, golf in the EBYF event, float and fish the Elk River and enjoy an outdoor barbeque with family and friends.


For each summer day on the river, the dry fly – Black Bart will provide daily thrills and pleasure!

uFernie has been fortunate to experience a slow paced growth. While there has been a lot of development over the years, recently renovations have been predominant and “smart growth” advocated by the City of Fernie. Driving through different neighbourhoods in town, it’s apparent that people are choosing to add to or enhance their homes rather than sell and build… not surprisingly. Having said that, there are man y developments on the horizon, and we’re sure it’s not going to stop anytime soon!

u I had an opportunity to hike Heiko’s Trail with Linda Socher last summer and two things happened. I spent the day with a Fernie legend, and I received a lesson in trail etiquette. The more Linda cleared, the more I was aware that we take the state of our trail system for granted. At one point Linda muttered, “Sheesh, people must think there is a cleaning crew that comes up here!”

I’ve always been a believer in authenticity and volunteerism. I think growing up in Fernie I have been imprinted with the idea that you

can make a difference, and participating in worthy activities makes your community stronger. I was volunteering for the Poker Ride on a rainy day last fall when Dave Richards popped out of the forest – literally. My girlfriend introduced us and he was suddenly talking about the Fernie Trails Alliance. He had heard I had a Masters in Economics and that my thesis work had specialized in valuating recreation users. Comically, in true Fernie fashion as I was puffing up to Project 9 with a loaded pack, in the rain, trying to maintain traction, he asked me if I would be interested in working with them. For the remainder of the hill he interviewed me, I interviewed him (to see if indeed this organization was ready for a manager) and in between gasps, I told him I would think about it.

As you may have guessed, I jumped at the chance. The Fernie Trails Alliance is a volunteer organization that advocates maintaining responsible, non-motorized trail access on both Crown and private lands in the Fernie area. We are a collective of four member groups including Island Lake Lodge, The Fernie Nordic Society, the Fernie Mountain Bike Club, and the Fernie Trails and Ski Touring Club.

I feel very lucky to have found a job in an area that brings so much value to people; it is very rewarding working with people that give so much of themselves to the community.

I love being the voice of the Trails Alliance and will work tirelessly to make sure this organization receives the recognition and assistance it needs to thrive.

In the spirit of the lovely Linda Socher herself, “Sheesh, do you people think the construction and maintenance of this incredible trail system just happens?”


I would say we are on the verge of people coming for the summer, and staying for the winter! Many of us were surprised to hear the film crew this past winter only ever talk of the epic mountain biking and hiking opportunities available, and how lucky we are to live here.


Being outside with a few friends, laughing and enjoying our mountains. It surely is what keeps us young!


In the summer in between biking and trail running, I love hiking with my children.

uSo much of what we celebrate in Fernie depends upon the hard work and dedication of individuals volunteering their time, enthusiasm, skills and ideas. The number and array of groups and organizations is astounding – the Fernie and District Arts Council, Fernie Historical Society, Fernie Trails Alliance, Downtown Social Committee, Fernie Pets Society, Advocates for Local Living… and this is just the tip of the iceberg.

The following are excerpts taken from the Fernie Mountain Bike Guide. You can purchase a mountain bike guide at various locations in town, or head to one of the shops downtown to get one-on-one tips and information.

• Leave your car at home. You can easily access the trail network from anywhere in town. A great starting point is at the Dirt Jump Park next to the Aquatic Centre.

• Ride it don’t slide it. Don’t lock up the brakes and skid down trails... although drifting both wheels without tapping a lever is just part of the fun.

• When you encounter puddles go straight through the middle of them not around the side, this minimizes trail widening. Best of all if there’s still lots of puddles try to do something that’s not mountain biking. I know it’s really hard sometimes.

• Garbage is simply unacceptable.

• Wear a helmet, other riders do not enjoy riding though brain splatter.

• If there’s a deadfall/tree down then post it on bikefernie.ca/forum or carry a folding hand saw and take care of it on the trail.

• When riding down trails you know are also popular up-tracks (e.g. What’s Up Doc, Hedonism, Dem Bones, the bottom of Gorby) you don’t need to be going mach 3 million, catching air around blind corners - especially if your name is Luke Nelson and you have a history of ramming uphill riders whilst in mid air.

• Remember; people working with chainsaws and brushsaws won’t be able to hear/see you on your bike. They are very loud and our circle of vision is focused through the visor on the helmet. Plus it takes forever to re-sharpen after you mow someone’s leg off...

• Don’t harass dirtbags in pickup trucks driving up Ridgemont, they might be heading to maintain your trails!

• Approach the Fernie Trails Alliance about building new trails rather than the old skool way of just starting your chainsaw.

• Feel free to donate your life savings to the Fernie Trails Alliance!

uLand UsePlease respect private land and posted closures when exploring the outdoors in and around Fernie. The majority of the land on the east side of the valley is privately owned. Roads and trail systems are constantly changing due to land developments in the area. Be informed and prepared before heading out.

•CEDAR VALLEY RAIL TRAIL (3km, elevation gain 50 m) •OLD GROWTH TRAIL (1 km, elevation gain 250m)Rating: Easy. Hiking Time: 45min -1hr each. Access: The Rail Trail starts at the base parking area, 30m past the Island Lake gate and finishes at the Old Growth Trail head.

•SPINEBACK TRAIL (3.5 km, elevation gain 530m, 3-4 hrs)

Rating: Moderate Access: Via the Lake Trail and Fir Trail toward the west end of Island Lake. Once you reach the marked junction, follow the Spineback signs.

•MOUNT BALDY LOOP (10.5 km, elevation gain 620m, 4-6 hrs)

Rating: Mod to Adv Access: From the trail head below the Bear Lodge head west following signs for the Mount Baldy Trail. From the summit, the trail traverses the Mount Baldy ridge, continuing west.

•TAMARACK TRAIL (8 km, elevation gain 640m, 5 hrs) •VIEWPOINT (4 km, elevation gain 200m, 3 hours)

Rating: Mod to Adv Access: From the trail head below the Bear Lodge head east following signs for the Tamarack Trail. The trail winds its way up the south-west slopes of Mount Fernie.

•MOUNTAIN LAKES TRAIL (HEIKO’S TRAIL) (22km, elevation gain 4500m, 8-12 hours)

Rating: Difficult Access: A high level of fitness and route finding skills are required.

Hiking Routes of the Cedar Valley

Rating for routes: Difficult. Steepness, loose rock, becoming lost, encountering wild animals, and stream crossings are just some of the hazards. Hiring a guide is recommended.

•CABIN RIDGE (ROUTE) Access: Drive the Island Lake Lodge access road 3km to the Old Growth Trail head. Follow the Old Growth Trail for 1km, then take the left fork trail to the Cabin Trail.

•LIZARD LAKE (ROUTE) Access: The trail head is in The Mount Fernie Provincial Park, approximately 0.5 km from the Island Lake Lodge property boundary and gate.

Course Rules• Number 1 rule of Disc Golf: HAVE FUN!• All 18 holes at the Lizard Range DGC are par 3 (3 throws from tee to pin for an experienced player).• Player with the lowest score on the previous hole tees off first.• After teeing off, player furthest away from the pin throws first.• Out of bounds are as follows: 1) on top of or over dyke 2) on or across the road 3) on or across park paths; these paths define most fairways 4) Horseshoe pits and

Disc Golf MapDisc golf is like traditional golf in a lot of ways, but instead of a ball and clubs players use a flying disc, or Frisbee. The disc or Frisbee is thrown from a tee to a target - the hole. The hole can be one of a number of targets, the most common being a Pole Hole which is an elevated metal basket.

As a player progresses down the fairway, he or she must make each consecutive shot from the spot where the previous throw has landed. The various terrain differences along and around each fairway can make the game pretty challenging and frustrating. When the Frisbee or disc lands in the basket, the hole is complete – on to the next!
