Dear Friends and Alumni, Mission statements from organizations have good and bad aspects. The positive is that it identifies your primary goal andcoalesces support from those who share it.But it can also cause inflexibility under changed circumstances. Welcome to the dilemma of the Alumni & Friends of LaGuardia.

The primary mission of the A&F since its founding in 1984 has been to raiseendowment funds to enhance the arts education at the school. The creation of theendowment was to ensure that support for the arts continues in perpetuity so that the school’s excellence is maintained through good times and bad. So far so good. Thispast year A&F awarded over $300,000 in grants to studio departments and awards orscholarships to students. But the current fiscal environment seriously affects LaGuardia High School, as it does all educational institutions. These difficult times presents us with extra challenges and many of you have asked whether the A&F can do more to help current students or how we can increase our funding assistance to the school.

These are issues to which our board of directors has given considerable thought and we have made some changes in our policies and procedures as a result. For example, we are working with our donors to modify the criteria for awards from their named funds so that they are more closely aligned with the current needs of the school and its students.We are also working closely with the Parents Association, which largely focuses on supporting academic studies, to coordinate our funding efforts so that together we can ensure a broader range of the school’s needs are met.

A&F remains committed to growing the endowment and its long-term giving program. Meanwhile, our board is considering initiatives which respond to the school’scurrent needs, while not foregoing our longer term approach.

We intend to communicate better to our supporters about the needs of the schooland our refurbishment of the A&F website, starting early next year, should helppotential donors identify school needs. But everyone can play a positive role by keepinginformed about developments affecting the school as they unfold, supporting publicofficials who support the school, lending your voice and volunteering when it will help,attending school and A&F events and, of course, contributing when you can. It’s a difficult time and not just for the school, of course. But we need to make sure that LaGuardia comes through this crisis intact and fulfilling the legacy from which all of us benefited.

Dear Friends and Alumni,

I joined Alumni and Friends as its Executive Director three months ago after Steve Asher resigned. Since then I have realized what a natural move it was for me as a graduate of Music & Art and a member of A&F’s board at its inception. I am thrilled to be back at the school; walking the halls and hearing and seeing what our talented young artists are up to makes me smile every day! By way of background, I spent most of my career in management, organizational development and strategic planning for Fortune 100 financial services companies. I then moved into the not-for-profit sector, consulting for and working with foundations. I love the arts, which have always taken a prominent place in my life, both as an

observer and underwater photographer, and I’m excited by the opportunity to combine my business skills and love of the arts to support the school that was a vital part of my education and development. I arrived at A&F at a time of financial stress for the school. In spite of budget cuts, I am delighted to see that, with support from A&F and the Parents Association, LaGuardia continues its legacy of excellence. In fact, this year, it won the prestigious “Blackboard Award” (see story below). The budget issues will continue for the foreseeable future but we who benefitted in the past from the M&A, PA and LaGuardia must continue to work together to ensure that our successors receive the same outstanding education that we did. Accordingly, my primary goals will include: increasing the endowment and A&F’s capacity to help the school, collaborating with the Principal and Parents Association to fund projects that need special help and engaging alumni and friends with their peers, the school and its wonderful students. I look forward to meeting and working with you and wish you and your family a happy holiday season and New Year.

LaGuardia Receives The Blackboard AwardLaGuardia has been selected to receive this prestigious award given to an outstanding public high school in recognition of exceptional educational programming. nina c. Lasky, Assistant Principal of Art, has a long history in arts education leadership. She served as an Assistant Principal at Fashion Industries High School for nine years and was an art teacher therefor five years.

Dr. Lasky comes to LaGuardia uniquely qualified. She is a graduate of Music & Art and holds a BFA from Parsons School of Design. She received her MA and Ed.D. in Art and Art Education from Teachers College, Columbia University and is a member of the Kappa

Delta Phi Honor Society in education.Prior to her career in education, Dr. Lasky was a visual director and freelance illustrator. She serves as an executive board member of the School Art League and continues to exhibit her personal artwork. She spends her summers painting community murals. Her work is featured in the book, “Forty Years of New York City Murals”.Dr. Lasky has served as a guest lecturer and a responder on dissertation proposals at Teachers College. She is a sought-after speaker, both locally and nationally, on art and art education, interdisciplinary teaching and learning, professional development in education, community partnerships and Jazz in American public education.

Sandy Faison, coordinator of drama and technical theater, has studied music at The Juilliard School and Improvisation at Second City Theatre in Chicago. She is a graduate of The Neighborhood Playhouse, where she studied with Sandy Meisner for two years. She holds a BA from

Hamilton College and a Master’s degree in educational theater from Steinhardt School of Education at NYU. She is certified for K-12 Theater and 9-12 Performing Arts-Drama and currently teaches acting, musical theater, career management and on camera acting. The National Society of High School Scholars

recognized Ms. Faison as a “2008 Teacher of Distinction.” Sandy’s career spans 40 years and includes television, film and stage. On Broadway, she created the role of Grace Farrell in “Annie” and was in the original companies of “Is There Life After High School” by Craig Carnelia and “Charlie and Algernon” by Charles Strouse. She also played opposite Jason Robards and Colleen Dewhurst on Broadway in the award winning revival of “You Can’t Take It With You.” In film, she has worked with such luminaries as Sydney Lumet ( Prince of The City) , Alan Pakula and Liza Minnelli (The Sterile Cuckoo) , Tom Cruise and Craig T. Nelson (All The Right Moves). She has also been a regular and done episodic work on many television series.

rCongratulations to Ms. Stember!Sheila Stember, LaGuardia’s Assistant Principal of Art for the past 30 years, retired in June. Ms Stember is a veteran of the NYC public schools for more than 50 years and an alumna of Music & Art.

Over 60 colleagues, friends, and family gathered to celebrate and honor her on October 7th at Scaletta Restaurant. In speech after speech, colleagues lauded her dedication to LaGuardia and her commitment to the students - one guest thought she should change her name to “ She-La!”

Colleagues and friends contributed letters, anecdotes, and photos that were compiled in a three ring binder and given to her along with an Egyptian style brooch in recognition

of teaching Advanced Placement Art History for the past decade. But the gift closest to Ms. Stember’s heart was the contributions from friends and colleagues to the Sheila Stember Scholarship Fund at A&F in honor of her retirement. The fund was originally created in appreciation of Ms. Stember’s 25th year as head of LaGuardia’s Art Department. It is a fitting tribute that the endowment in her honor continue to help LaGuardia’s students achieve their goals and pursue their dreams.

The Business of The Music Business...was a resounding success! A&F has launched a new professional development series for alumni, students and friends.This series will help inform aspiring artists on how to become working professionals and ways to use their arts training to enter meaningful careers.

On October 26, 2010 Mark Pitts (LAG ’88), President of Urban Music at Jive Records and Barry Weiss chairman and CEO for the RCA/JIVE Label Group (formerly the BMG Label Group) participated in a panel discussion moderated by Andrew Edgecliffe-Johnson, media editor for the Financial Times to discuss the business of the music business and what emerging artists need to know. Mr. Pitts’ enthusiasm for the school and his experience as a student were both apparent and contagious and set the tone for the evening. He and Mr. Weiss talked about the job of an A&R executive and CEO,

the biggest challenges, how the industry has changed and gave advice to those interested in pursuing music as a career.

There were many questions from the audience and Mr. Pitts offered guidance and advice to students interested in pursing a career in music. M&A ‘60The class of M&A ‘60 celebrated its 50threunion with three days of entertainment,fine food and countless reminiscences. Thehighlight of the weekend was a Friday nightperformance in the auditorium at the “Castle”,the school’s original building on 135th street,followed by a dinner downstairs in theold cafeteria. The evening featured worldrenowned jazz musicians, veterans of theNew York Philharmonic and New York CityBallet Orchestras and readings by well knownauthors and poets, all of whom were membersof the class of ‘60. A slide show, presentingartwork created over the years by many ofthe class’s professional artists, completed theevent. The class gathered again on Saturdaynight for dinner at a midtown restaurantand on Sunday for an outdoor brunch andspontaneous singing. As part of the reunion,the Class of ‘60 raised an endowed fundthat will be dispersed to needy students orto the school annually.

M&A ’70 Organized by class leaders and volunteers,including Richard Roberts and Anthony Delgado the group reminisced about the “good old days” while looking forward to their upcoming 50th reunion. Class attendance was the highest ever at a reunion- some alumni attributed this to social networking, others attributed it to the buzz that was

generated at the 35th reunion. Moved by the opportunity to reconnect, one classmate gave a challenge donation to the 1970 Class Fund, to be matched over the course of the next 12 months. This Fund is now in formation and will hopefully turn into an endowed scholarship to be awarded annually to a deserving student. LG ’90 The only thing that exceeded this class’sattendance was their spirits. Mobilized byclass leader Norman L. Durkins, the class isa model of how to utilize social networkingin tandem with A&F to maintain ongoingcontact with each other. Fellow class leaderNatasha Johnson spoke about Norman’sefforts, which began in earnest a full twoyears before the actual event. “Facebook hasbeen a wonderful tool and we have to givethanks to Norman Durkins for creating notone but three Facebook pages. He createdand maintained these pages so that we couldall connect to one another. He posted theinformation we received from A&F on thepages and kept everyone in the loop. Healso created a memorial page for classmateswe have lost throughout the years. Classof ‘90, to me, is the best non-biologicalfamily a person can have….we all share a very special bond”

The gift, a fine viola and bow datingfrom the 19th Century, was given to Belmont Fisher by his parents in 1923, when he won several top awards in the New York Music Week Association’s competition for Best Student Musician in the New York City area. Mr. Fisher was an excellent violinist and violist, and was a member of a string quartet for 60 years.

Phillip Gould M&A ‘40 has begun a literary career and recently published an ebook of fifty short stories called, “A New Yorker’s Stories” which can be downloaded from Amazon.com.

Bron Jenssen M&A ’42 received a commendation from Admiral Mike Mullen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff for “bravery and great sacrifice” as a wartime photographer during WWII. Assunta (Sunny) carballeira M&A ’43 organizes concerts and master classes and lectures at the Metropolitan Museum, the Spanish Institute and the Manhattan School of Music and is about to release a new CD that includes improvisational Broadway music with a classical sound.

Leah Brittman Karp M&A ’43 recently published “Innerscapes”, a memoir in poetry available on amazon.com. She has recently returned from seventy days circumnavigating South America and is excited about her in-depth study of Astor Piazzolla’s life and Tango Nuevo music. She is also preparing a program for San Diegans on Piazzolla.

Leah efron Martin M&A ’43 was just appointed chairperson of the music department at Coldspring Harbor Central School. She is also a choral director at the West Side Elementary School.

Sarai Golomb Zitter M&A ’44 is enjoying excellent health and is still involved in liberal and pro-choice politics. She is assistant editor of her community newsletter and head of the gardening committee.

Marilyn Bergman M&A ’45 is an Academy Award winning lyricist and has recently stepped down as President and Chairman of ASCAP, a position she has held since 1994. Ms. Bergman was the first woman to be elected to the ASCAP Board. She and her writing partner and husband, songwriter Alan Bergman have a number of new projects: they have just completed work on Steven Soderberg’s film, “The Informant” with composer Marvin Hamlisch and are currently working on two musicals, one with Marvin Hamlisch and one with composer Michel Legrand.

J. naomi Loewy M&A ’46 plays clarinet, sax, flute, fiddle and guitar in various community orchestras and sometimes performs with her husband. All her kids and grandkids are musical too!

renee Alberts M&A ’47 paints and exhibits her work and has received both first place and honorable mention awards at recent shows.

rita rivkin oshinsky M&A ’47 taught music at M&A from 1955-60 and was also a professional

singer-pianist. She now teaches piano and voice in her studio in Manchester, CT.

cynthia Ulick Berliner M&A ’47 was an elementary school teacher for 20 years and has spent the last 20 years enjoying hobbies and traveling.

Judith Kredal Brown M&A ’48 is still teaching, but beginning a phased retirement. Some of her former students, which number in the thousands, are now grandparents!

Marcia chamowitz M&A ’48 says “We have moved to Jerusalem after 25 years in Tel Aviv. Love to see visitors!”

edward H. craig M&A ’49 is enjoying retirement with his wife of 57 years. He travels often to the east coast to visit his youngest son who is also a graduate of LaGuardia and now an assistant professor at Westchester University School of Performing Arts and has just presented Edward and his wife with their first grandchild.

ruth Feiner Feigel M&A ’49 continues to sculpt in clay and stone. She and her husband are supporters of the Boca Raton Museum of Art and Ruth is a charter member of the Washington, D.C. Women’s Art Museum.

Gene Light M&A ’49 is proud that, even though he was an art student, his son is now head of the music division at the Creative Artists Agency.

ellin Friedman Grossman M&A ’51 retired in 1999 after a career in higher education at the University of Houston (Clear Lake) to spend more time with her three daughters and nine grandchildren. In ’08, she found a new interest in running and has run ten 5K races often placing 1st in her age class. Her husband, Robert, to whom she has been married for 55 years is a neurosurgeon.

Wilhelmina Van ness M&A ’51 is an artist who has focused in recent years on depictions of St. Joan of Arc’s life and displayed three of her mural-sized works this year.

Sheila Green M&A ’52 just published her 30th book, “Watch Out World Rosy Cole is Going Green”, which she wrote and illustrated.

Barbara Backlar reis M&A ’52 is a music historian who has lectured at Tanglewood, the Long Boat Key Education Center as well as Housatonic College. She has also just finished a musical.

Barbara Stein Mallow M&A ’53 is a cellist, performer and professor of cello at the Mannes School of Music.

Sandra Gordon Jackman M&A ’55 recently exhibited her book, “War Tome/Run for Cover” at the Armory in NYC and eighteen of her books were exhibited at the Brooklyn Public Library.

Beverly Mcintosh Green M&A ’56 produced a musical revue of popular songs for McGraw-Hill (during her career as a banker!) and continues to engage in multiple chorale groups and perform on the organ and piano……thanks to M&A!

Grace Feldman M&A ’56 received the Music Outreach Award from Early Music America recognizing her lifetime achievement in early music education and celebrating her nearly 45 years of teaching.

Barbara Grossman M&A ’61 has had two recent exhibitions and still finds time to teach at Yale, Boston University and Chautauqua School of Art.

Mario Kujawski M&A ’62 donated a sculpture in memory of Ellen Kagan M&A ’62 that is prominently displayed in The Gathering Place, a cancer center for patients, survivors, families and care takers. The sculpture is entitled, “Chatunah”, which means wedding in Hebrew. Ellen Kagan passed away in 2009 after a long battle with cancer.

Kathleen radano Pollak M&A ’63 received the Best Book of the Year (’09) award from the Premier Book Awards for her children’s picture book, “Just Call Me Charlie”. Her work has also won several ribbons from the Creative Artists Guild. Her website is: www.kathypollackbooks.com

Bill Meezan M&A ’63 was the Dean of the College of Social Work at Ohio State University and has left academia after 32 years. He is now the Director of Policy and Research at Children’s Rights, an advocacy organization working to improve the child welfare system. He is living on the Upper West Side of NYC with his partner of 31 years.

Gladys Gruenwald M&A ’64 just completed her fifth year as a cantorial student at the Academy for Jewish Religion and went to Israel to be in the chorus of Mozart’s Requiem. She will be the cantor at Congregation Tehillah in Riverdale, NY beginning in 2011.

Mary Ann nichols, M&A ’64 continues her graphic design work and manages her husband’s tax practice. She also designed the website for the practice. She has two grown children and is president of the Cooper Union Alumni Association.

Joshua Brown M&A ’67 was awarded a 2010 Guggenheim Fellowship in US History for his project “Studies in the Visual Culture of the American Civil War”.

deborah Feldman Szabo M&A ’67 has been teaching English and creative writing for 37 years (which doesn’t seem possible!) Her son, an aspiring writer and hip hop artist, attends Oberlin College. Her daughter is being Bat Mitzva-ed and Deborah and her husband are headed toward their retirement.

Gary Hermus PA ’68 has retired after 33 years with the NYS civil service and intends to pursue music and songwriting full time in his new home in Santa Fe that he shares with his wife, Barbara.

cecil castellucci LAG ’87 is the author of six young adult novels and is about to release her seventh novel which takes place in NYC and the main character goes to Performing Arts.

cara Buono LAG ’89 is starring in a new film, “Let Me In” which was released in September.

Adrien Brody LAG ’91 is starring in a new science fiction film, “Predators.”

Stacey Wade Mangiaracina LAG ’94 is married and has a 3 ½ year old daughter. She continued to dance after graduation and then moved into a corporate position.

Elizabeth Rockwell, Chairman of Dance Division of Performing Arts (1948-52)In 1948, Elizabeth Rockwell created the dance department at Performing Arts. Ms. Rockwell came to the school upon the recommendation of Martha Graham, for whom Ms. Rockwell had danced and Martha Hill, who was the head of the dance department at Juilliard. Ms. Rockwell was 28 years old when she joined Performing Arts. Some of her students included Eleo Pomare, Lee Becker and Arthur Mitchell. She left in 1952 to raise a family and was succeeded by Marjorie Dycke and subsequently Rachel Yokum.

Marion Pinto M&A ‘53American artist Marion Pinto passed away on September 21st. An early pioneer of the SoHo artists’ district, she created one of the first images of the coming of age of SoHo when she was commissioned to paint a large mural for The Ballroom restaurant depicting several SoHo art world figures. The painting is now in the permanent collection of The Museum of the City of New York. She had an extensive career in the arts and traveled extensively. Marion is remembered as a richly talented artist and as a marvelously intelligent, witty and loyal friend who was utterly devoted to the City of New York. King Sang Wong LAG ‘90 King Sang Wong, LAG ‘90, passed away on September 13th, 2010 after a two year battle with cancer. He was 39. King was an artist, writer, poet, and philosopher. From a young age, King’s talent, creativity and artistry were apparent. He pursued the arts and, after graduating from LaGuardia, went on to receive a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Pratt Institute. His primary focus early in his career was sculpture. During the past 15 years, however, he pursued photography specializing in photographing China, the country of his birth. He has received numerous awards and recognition of his work, which can be seen at www.kingwong.com. King’s only brother, Jerry, has set up a named fund to provide funding for photography education and we welcome donations to this fund.
