The month of May marked the open-ing of the Volleyball and Beach Vol-leyball season, just after the successful conclusion of two weeks of meet-ings at the FIVB, adopting important changes in its structure. boys and girls and special reports on the November World Cups in Japan and the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

The growth and posi-tive development of the FIVB’s major competi-tions was unanimously noted. The Beach Volley-ball SWATCH FIVB World Tour was a highlight of the meeting this year with a record 35 events and USD 8,750,000 in prize money. The World League’s suc-cess in signing major new TV networks for the 2007 season and the improved image of its new branding have been revealed, which is the best proof of the dynamism displayed by the FIVB. Finally, facing the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, the Olympic qualifica-tion for Beach Volleyball and Volleyball was given special attention particularly the detailed reports on the qualification process, taking place from 1st January 2007 to 20th July 2008.

The Board also adopted a totally new approach concerning the infringement of Rules and violations to the Code of Conduct, upon the proposal of the FIVB President. Under this new concept the President’s powers to suspend FIVB mem-bers for actions or attitudes contrary to the FIVB Regulations are delegated to an independent Disciplinary Committee, who

after hearing the facts from the member considered at fault, may recommend or not the application of a sanction which only the Executive Committee or the Board will be authorised to apply.

This month will see non-stop Volleyball action with the four remaining weekends of the Intercontinental Round of the World League to take place, the Finals being held in Katowice, Poland, from 11th to 15th July. As for Beach Volleyball, 3 double-gender events will take place, including one Open in Espinho, Portugal, two Grand Slams in Paris, France, and Stavanger, Norway, as well as one women’s Open in Warsaw, Poland, and one men’s Open in Zagreb, Croatia.

Korean attacks and serves put Brazil in big trouble, solved only with the 17th point of the tie break.

Pool BThe Blues lined up by Philippe Blain made an awkward first step (13-25) in Portland, then brushing up the situation with a 5 set win against U.S.A. Guillaume Samica was the main danger for U.S.A. and Pierre Pujol conducted the offensive system very efficiently. But U.S.A. soon regained its

mental and physical power, to go for a split. Gabriel Gardner, moved from the left side to the outside hitting, marked 18 points and helped his team to go for the 3-1.

Pool cDouble challenge between Russia number 3 and Serbia 5 in the world ranking. Played in Moscow, the two matches showed what new Russia, with 37 year old setter Kham-uttskikh as the leader, dreams to set up to go to the finals. Serbia, for the first time without the Grbic brothers and with many new players in the twelve, did not have an easy debut. For the new Russian coach, Alekno, it was only big smiles for his first 3-0 and 3-1 victories.Egypt, without four of its best players, in-cluding setter Abdalla, could not resist the strength of the Cubans, coached by Orlan-do Samuels, back to the island after many years of coaching abroad. Moreover, the Egyptian had another problem during the games. “It’s a shame that we lost starter Hossan Shaarawy, due to an injury. Any-way, our younger players did their best, but failed due to their inexperience” said captain Hassan Ashraf Abouel after these 3-1 and 3-0 losses.

Pool DThe first matches for Poland were sched-uled in Lodz, where the starting weekend of the World League found its best audi-ence, 19,200 spectators. Raul Lozano’s

WeeK 1Pool aCanada, after 7 years away from the World League, experienced a great start

against Finland in the opening match (3-1), but the second one hoisted the white and blue flag over the John Labatt Centre, in London (Ontario). Thomas Sammelvuo hit the Mikasa at his best and signed a tie with Canada, two teams defined by their coaches as live “work in progress”.The hardest homework was for the re-newed team of Korea. A young squad with the worst target ever for a beginning: the Olympic and World Champion Brazil. Even Bernardinho Rezende was forced to change his team, due to some injuries or forced absences : his son was on the court, too (‘Bruninho’, whose mother is former spiker Vera Mossa), but the experience of Murilo and Samuel Fuchs was enough to catch a match at the Yugwangsoon Gymn. A second one showed many spectacular plays performed by captain Kyung-Soo Lee and Chul-Woo Park, getting Korea very close to the first round surprise. The

Korea at the second place of the pool, just behind Brazil.

Pool BItaly’s debut in Pool B was marked by a tie-break win in Firenze and a 0-3 loss in Livorno against France. A 12,600 cheer-ing audience welcomed Montali’s team, but the French team seemed much too powerful for the new ‘Azzurri’ group.3-1, 3-1 for U.S.A.-Japan in the Green Bay challenge gives the lead of Pool B to McCutcheon’s squad. With Ryan Miller as a steady wall, William Priddy as World League top scorer and Gabe Gardner capa-ble of a 10 points run in the last set, Japan left the U.S.A. with the last standing posi-tion: “It’s the first time we have played to-gether as a team – is captain Shinya Chiba comment – It’s hard to compare this team to the past, because we don’t have one.”

Pool cEven with a 32-30 in the last set of the first game, Egypt couldn’t succeed to over-come Serbia. Two 3-0 send Serbia-Egypt to the 2007 World League archive. As cap-tain Abdul Hassan Ashraf underscored,

“This is our second participation only in the World League, and Serbia played a lot of decisive matches before us. Maybe we win in Cairo, this is our wish.”Both teams now are on the run to catch leaders Cuba and Russia. Havana, show-ing a packed Ciudad Deportivo, proved

a great Friday start for Russia (2-3), and then Cuba answered at its best (3-1): even almost losing the fourth set, but head coach Orlando found out in Rolando Jur-quin the most useful serves.

Pool DBulgaria and Poland, with no loss after this second week-end, are on top of Pool D. The Poland-Argentina sold-out matches in Poznan (5,100) and Bydgoszcz (8,000), finished 3-1 and 3-0. This was also time for Raul Lozano to show a new talent like Bartosz Kurek, but due to an injured leg, he could not send him back to the 12’s for the easiest Sunday match.Bulgaria marked 4 points, too, in the last week-end. “We prepared very good for this match but Bulgaria played brilliant and left us no space for performance” says China captain, Qiong Shen. Martin Stoev could test all his players, with good responses from everyone, as they’re now expected to play four away matches.

team managed to succeed twice with Chi-na, even if the Saturday match was really tough, ending with a fifth set. The same experience that lacked for the line-up of Argentina, a country building a new team project; as coach Jon Uri-arte said before, “we need hard experi-ence like a World League, than we will be able to harvest”. Bulgaria, lead by Boyan Yordanov’s strong hitting, had just over two hours of playing to close the Varna event.

WeeK 2Pool aNo chances for Finland in the two match-es played in Cuiabá. Rewarding perfectly the huge Brazilian fans’ support (an audi-ence of 21,500 in two days), Bernardinho Rezende’s team is still unbeaten. The first game was more intense («we had the op-portunity to beat Brazil, this time» is the comment of Finland’s captain, Tuomas Sammelvuo), but the Saturday match was straight for Rodrigao and his partners. Same results (3-1, 3-0) for Korea-Canada, with a 10,000 support from the Jeonju stands, led by Lee Kyung Soo, best scorer (“His technique is so excellent that he can even play among the top level of interna-tional players” says Glenn Hoag, Canada coach) of his team. China captured its fourth gold medal in the last seven women’s SWATCH FIVB World Tour events when top-seeded Jie Wang and Jia Tian outlasted fifth-seeded Nila Ann Hakedal and Ingrid Torlen of Norway 14-21, 21-18 and 15-13 in 59 minutes. Norway’s emergence with one of the top women’s team has been fueled by three-straight final four finishes by Hakedal and Torlen, who posted their country’s best-ever women’s finish on the SWATCH FIVB World Tour by receiving the silver medal and earning the USD 22,000 second-place prize. In the All-Brazilian bronze medal match, fourth-seeded Talita Antunes and Renata Ribeiro posted a 16-21, 21-17 and 15-10 victory in 50 minutes over third-seeded Leila Barros and Ana Paula Connelly to claim the USD 16,000 third-place prize. Talita and Renata lead the SWATCH series between the two teams 3-1. Leila and Ana Paula shared USD 12,000 for 4th-place.

By splitting the USD 32,000 first-place prize with a 17-21, 21-19 and 15-13 win over fifth-seeded Pedro Cunha and Franco Neto of Brazil in 68 minutes, the eighth-seeded Reinder Nummerdor and Richard Schuil becomes the first men’s team from the Netherlands to win a SWATCH gold medal in only their seventh FIVB start to-gether. In the bronze medal match, Har-ley Marques and Pedro Salgado split the USD 16,000 third-place prize by defeating

Brink and Dieckmann 21-19 and 21-12 in 46 minutes. It was the Brazilians sec-ond medal this season after winning last week’s SWATCH stop in Shanghai, China. Brink and Dieckmann shared USD 12,000 for fourth-place.

Talita Antuntes and Renata Ribeiro com-pleted their most successful weekend in the past 20 months on the SWATCH FIVB World Tour as the young Brazilians sur-prised the top two teams on the interna-tional Beach Volleyball circuit to capture the USD 200,000 Singapore Open on Si-loso Beach. Seeded third in the 32-team Main Draw field for the inaugural Singa-pore Open, Talita and Renata won their first SWATCH stop since September 2005 to claim their third FIVB gold medal to-gether by upsetting second-seeded Jie Wang and Jia Tian 21-15 and 21-19 in 43 minutes to avenge an earlier defeated in the competition to the Chinese pair.In the bronze medal match, fourth-seeded Chen Xue and Xi Zhang posted a 21-18 and 21-9 win over Juliana and Larissa to claim the USD 16,000 third-place prize. It was the young Chinese pair’s fifth SWATCH medal together in 15 FIVB starts as Chen Xue and Xi Zhang snapped a four-match losing streak to the Brazilians.

Twenty-one year old Pedro Salgado be-came the 20th player from Brazil to win a SWATCH FIVB World Tour event as he teamed with Harley Marques to capture the USD 400,000 China Shanghai Jinshan Open gold medal by upsetting reigning World champions Marcio Araujo and Fa-bio Magalhaes in the finals. A winner of three FIVB junior titles, the seventh-seed-ed Salgado and Harley completed a per-fect week (6-0 match mark) in Shanghai as a wild card entry by posting a come-from-behind 15-21, 22-20 and 15-12 gold medal win over third-seeded Marcio Araujo and Fabio in 65 minutes.

In the men’s bronze medal match, the newly-formed Swiss team of Patrick Heuscher and Sascha Heyer claimed the USD 16,000 third-place prize with a 21-19 and 21-17 win in 46 minutes over de-feating 17th-seeded Igor Kolodinsky and Dmitri Barsouk, who became the first men’s team from Russia since 2001 to compete in a SWATCH FIVB World Tour medal match.

China made the most of their height ad-vantage to spike devastatingly and block scintillatingly to win the first two sets 25-20 and 25-20.

The Algerian team, whose previous vic-tory was back in 1988, was happy to win a second gold medal, especially after their surprising defeat in this competition against defending champions Al Ahly in the semifinal just a few days before.

Mouloudia used the powerful spike serv-ices of Ali Kerboua and Valery and the efficient spikes of Ker-boua and Ben Hallal to clinch a straight sets victory in the fi-nal of the competition over El Guish of Egypt (25-22, 25-21, 25-19) in just 66 minutes.

Al Ahly who had the record of titles in this competition with a total of 8 cups, finished in the third position following their victory over “dark hors-es” GSU of Kenya who ranked fourth.

The prizes and awards were given to the teams by Mr. Baba Sy, president of the Control Committee, in presence of high-profile officials including the Nigerian Minister of Culture, the Egyptian and Al-gerian ambassadors in Niger, SOC del-egates Mr. Okba Gougam and Mr. Morak-inyo, Referee Delegate Mr. Majeed Djirad, and Niger Volleyball Federation President Mr. Amada Sidiyane.

“I’m happy to have won this title because we were well prepared for that but with-out the pressure which was on many teams like Ahly” said head coach Karimo Bernaoui while proudly carrying the cup.

“I want to thank my players very much be-cause they maintained their rhythm and motivation from the start of the competi-tion until the end” he added.

“Frier”Award.

Beal was inducted into the Volleyball Hall of Fame in 1989 and was USA Volleyball’s first recipient of the All-Time Great Coach Award in 1995. He was named a finalist for the Federation Internationale de Vol-leyball (FIVB) Greatest Coach of the Cen-tury.

“It is really overwhelming to be awarded the Frier Award” Beal said. “When I stop and think about whom the award is named for and his impact on the sport of volleyball, it is truly an honor to receive this award.”

Beal is a legend within the international community as an innovator of the game that produced a new style of play around the world. He guided Team USA to a gold medal at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, and it marked the first time the U.S. had medaled in the Olympics. He lat-

er coached the U.S. Men’s National Team at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney and the 2004 Olympics in Athens to become the second coach in USA Volleyball history to lead three teams to the Olympics. At the 2004 Olympics, Beal guided his squad to a 4-4 record and to a fourth-place finish overall-the team’s best Olympic finish in 12 years.

Since joining the organization as its CEO, Beal has made a reputation as a leader worldwide. He was elected to the FIVB Board of Admin-istration at the recent 30th FIVB World Congress held Oct. 23-25 in Tokyo. Beal now sits on a commit-tee that is respon-sible for the overall management of the FIVB, oversee-ing the work of the National Federa-tions, Confedera-tions, commissions and councils.

“If I have a single objective – it is very simply – to

grow the game” Beal said. “That is what we’re about and I think that is what we ought to be about.”

Youth volleyball, both indoor and beach, has been a priority under Beal’s watchful eye of the organization. In 2007, the U.S. will send all four of its high performance pipeline teams to FIVB World Champion-ships for the first time in history. The U.S. Women’s Junior National Team and the U.S. Girls’ Youth National Team won gold medals at their respective 2006 NORCE-CA Championships, while the U.S. Boys’ Youth National Team and the U.S. Men’s Junior National Team each won silver medals.

World League test for new substitution system

FIVb gamE rulES

The FIVB will test a«quick substitutionsystem» during thisyear’s World League. The procedure willcomeintoeffectwhena team wants to re-place a player while

theballisoutofplayandbeforethereferee’swhistleforservice.The“re-quest”forsubstitutionistheentranceofthesubstitut(s)intothesubstitutionzone,nearthescorer’stable,withthenumbered paddle corresponding totheplayer(s)toleavethecourt.

No further action by the coach or the game captain, such as making a signal or using the buzzer/signalling device, is re-quired. The request is acknowledged by the scorer’s buzzer or by the second ref-eree’s whistle, accompanied by the match official’s use of the official hand signal.

The substituting player goes immediately to the sideline close to the net post within the substitution zone to make the paddle-exchange with the player on court. This exchange, and hence the completion of the act of substitution,is authorised only by a hand signal from the second referee. Once a player enters the substitution zone and the buzzer/whistle is sounded, a sub-stitution must be completed, otherwise the team will be charged with a delay sanction.

The FIVB hopes that the new system will reduce the potential conflict between team and referee and potential spectator confu-sion, as well as keeping the rhythm of the game. Referees, coaches and players will be asked for their views on the new pro-cedure during the World League, and to highlight problems and unforeseen situa-tions.
