My name is Jorge Uribe and I will be acting as the new High Rho for the chapter this semester. Granted, communications with the chapter and alumni have been… well, nonexistent. But it is my goal to keep up with all of you not just with an email here and there but with this newsletter, which is scheduled to come out twice a month! The purpose of these newsletters is to inform you with what is going on in the chapter with some insight of what some of the brothers and associates are thinking. With every issue you will meet a new officer, brother or associate and a little something extra provided by Brother Joey Olivarez in a section called, “Alright guys.” This semester we are more organized and better prepared to approach this semester with ferocity and a renewed spirit of brotherhood. I have one more semester to go, including this one, but I hope with these newsletters our communication grows and fosters into an everlasting relationship. We are all here looking forward to an awesome semester, and a better understanding of what this bond means to us and for future Lambda Chi’s.

High  Alpha              2    A  brief  look  into  the  High  Alpha  and  his  plans  for  his  last  semester  here  at  the  University  of  Texas  at  El  Paso.

Things  to  come  3                3    Some  of  the  officers  plans  for  the  semester…

Events                                4    Valentoga,  Greek  Week,  Founders  Day  BBQ,  Crawfish  Broil  and  much  more…

Greetings  from  the  new  High  Rho!

New  Year,  New  Semester,  New  Beginnings

The  sub  heading  says  it  all.  It’s  a  new  year,  semester  and  a  time  for  new  beginnings.  First  of  all  I  would  I  like  to  introduce  myself.  My  name  is  Jorge  Uribe  and  I  will  be  acting  as  the  new  High  Rho  for  the  chapter  this  semester.

Granted,  communications  with  the  chapter  and  alumni  have  been…  well,  non-‐existent.

With  every  issue  you  will  meet  a  new  officer,  brother  or  associate  and  a  little  something  extra  provided  by  Brother  Joey  Olivarez  in  a  section  called,  “Alright  guys.”

This  semester  we  are  more  organized  and  better  prepared  to  approach  this  semester  with  ferocity  and  a  renewed

spirit  of  brotherhood.

Lambda  Chi  Alpha  –  Zeta  Epsilon     Issue  #1  February  3,  2010

2

Throughout  his  time  here  with  Lambda  Chi  Alpha,  Alexandro  has  attributed  many  of  his  abilities  to  Lambda  Chi.

Going  on  his  last  semester  here,  he  will  be  leaving  with  a  degree  in  Criminal  Justice  and  a  minor  in  Political  Science.

He  plans  to  move  back  to  Chicago  where  he  intends  to  become  a  social  worker  as  he  works  his  way  through  law  school,  with  plans  to  become  a  Civil  Rights  Lawyer  and  possibly  run  for  a  political  office.

Alexandro  has  held  many  offices,  which  include  High  Sigma,  High  Phi,  High  Gamma,  and  his  current  office  High  Alpha.  In  addition  to  all  of  this,  he  also  serves  as  the  Collegiate  Senator  for  Liberal  Arts  in  the  Student  Government  Association  and  is  part  of  the  Criminal  Justice  Student  Society.

Growing  our  image  here  at  Zeta  Epsilon  has  been  one  of  the  main  goals  he  has  this  semester  and  to  restore  the  luster  that  has  evaded  us  for  the  past  two  years.

Q:  What  are  you  planning  this  year  that  will  change  the  face  of  Lambda  Chi  Alpha  here  at  UTEP?

A:  Developing  a  semester  full  of  events  not  only  to  mix  with  sororities,  but  also  having  mixers  with  the  athletic  women.  These  mixers  are  sure  to  help  increase  our  reputation  as  being  of  the  finest  caliber  of  chivalry  amongst  all  the  Fraternities  on  campus.

Many  things  are  in  the  works  including  more  community  service  and  further  involvement  in  UTEP  affairs.

In  furtherance  of  community  service  this  past  year  we  were  able  to  achieve  the  100K  mark  and  gathered  102,000  lbs  of  food  for  the  Rescue  Mission  of  El  Paso.  This  brought  national  attention  and  we  are  racked  fourth  in  the  nation!

“A  huge  importance  should  be  given  to  the  collaboration  within  the  Greek  Community  in  order  to  grow  together.”  says  Alexandro.

New  strives  have  been  taken  with  the  chapter  in  order  to  achieve  scholastic  excellence,  installment  of  mandatory  chapter  study  hours.  “We  would  like  this  chapter  to  be  known  as  a  Fraternity  that  can  have  fun  but  also  be  serious  and  buckle  down  to  get  work  done.”

His  last  semester  might  be  one  to  remember  with  Founders  Day,  Greek  Week  and  many  more  events  schedules  for  this  semester.  His  intentions  and  vision  will  push  this  chapter  to  a  new  level  to  which  we  can  continue  to  grow  and  build  upon  the  foundations  and  programs  set  this  semester.

Alexandro  Diaz  High  Alpha    With  his  last  semester  here  at  UTEP,  Alexandro  has  shown  his  ability  as  a  leader  in  the  tough  times  as  well  in  the  great  times.  Currently  seeking  graduate  schools  back  home  in  Chicago  he  plans  to    push  this  chapter  to  its  fullest  potential.  Alexando  (Patches)  Diaz  is  a  true  asset  to  Lambda  Chi  Alpha

Next  Issue  Brother  Joey  Olivarez.  Last  semester  and  his  thoughts.  Including  some  of  his  favorite  memories.

With  official  rush  over,  it’s  time  to  see  what  these  guys  are  made  of.

As  of  last  week  official  rush  ended  here  at  UTEP.  Now  it’s  time  to  focus  and  see  what  the  prospects  have  to  offer  our  fraternity.

All  of  the  officers  have  many  things  planned…

Our  High  Alpha  is  keeping  up  will  all  of  his  officers  and  keeping  them  on  their  toes.

High  Beta,  Neyri  Acuña,  is  planning  Brotherhood  retreat.  As  you  can  see  from  last  years  picture  which  is  on  the  cover.  A  high  portion  of  the  chapter  attended.  Many  things  were  brought  up  to  the  attention  of  the  chapter  at  retreat  which  are  being  dealt  with  as  this  semester  goes  on.

High  Theta,  Roman  Sandoval  is  getting  together  with  Zeta  Tau  Alpha,  the  women’s  fraternity  on  campus  who  are  organizing  their  annual  Race  for  the  Cure  to  be  held  this  month  on  the  21st.  Every  year  we  help  out  with  whatever  we  can.  If  you  plan  on  going  for  the  race  or  walk  let  us  know  so  we  can  meet  up  with  you  at  the  finish  line!

Our  Iota,  Manny  Del  Castillo  is  working  hard  to  keep  lowering  our  insurance.  Currently  with  about  5  speakers  coming  in,  he  is

lowering  our  insurance  for  the  brothers  and  keeping  us  safe  at  the  same  time.  If  you  would  like  to  set  something  up  with  him  don’t  hesitate  to  contact  him  ([email protected]).

Brother  High  Kappa  Ricardo  Espino  is  very  excited  to  meet  his  new  class,  which  will  be  associated  soon!  Date  of  association  is  on  February  12th  at  Jackson’s  restaurant  on  Mesa  by  Castellano.

Our  High  Delta,  Lorenzo  Villa,  made  new  recruits  possible  this  year  with  his  organizational  skills  that  have  been  able  to  bring  gentlemen  of  character  to  the  attention  of  Lambda  Chi  Alpha.

A  dinner  is  in  the  works  in  order  to  get  to  know  the  new  guys  better  and  with  great  pleasure  alumni  are  always  welcome.  These  dates  are  yet  to  be  determined  but  will  be  sent  out  soon.

High  Sigma,  Edward  O’Hara  is  pushing  the  chapter  to  new  heights  with  implementation  of  mandatory  study  hours  and  making  sure  we  have  up  to  date  résumés  for  when  we  are  ready  go  to  the  working  world  and  apply  the  skills  we  have  learned.

(Continued)

Events  being  planned  by  our  High  Epsilon  Orlando  Sandoval  seem  to  be  never  ending.

This  Sunday  is  our  Super  Bowl  Mixer  with  the  Sigma  Psi  Eta  ladies.  These  women  have  gone  above  and  beyond  when  it  comes  to  our  North  American  Food  Drive  philanthropy  every  year.  This  past  year  they  helped  us  raise  more  the  half  our  final  count  of  102,000  lbs!!!

Coming  up  February  10th  is  our  karaoke  mixer  with  Alpha  Xi  Delta.  These  ladies  helped  us  out  quite  a  bit  during  NAFD  as  well  and  are  nice  women  to  hang  around  with.  Our  continuing  friendships  with  these  ladies  have  attributed  to  our  success  here  on  campus.

February  13  we  decided  to  mix  a  typical  social  event  with  our  national  day  of  love  and  call  it  Valentoga.  Cupids  will  be  all  over  this  event  providing  that  extra  push  for  some  fun.

Cookouts  are  in  the  works  as  well,  not  just  with  sororities  but  also  with  our  fellow  fraternities  here  on  campus.  Greek  relations  are  part  of  that  core  that  makes  this  system  unique.  Good  friendships  are  essential  for  Greek  growth  and  of  course  amazing  networking.

The  Men  of  Service  auction  had  to  be  post-‐poned  from  last  semester  to  this  semester.  Yet  the  date  is  not  finalized  but  will  probably  be  at  the  end  of  this  month  or  early  March.

More  events  are  in  the  works  such  as  Watermelon  bash.  Last  year  we  held  our  first  one  in  quite  some  time  and  was  a  complete  success.  We  also  started  pumpkin  bash  which  was  actually  our  precursor  to  our  watermelon  bash  and  all  the  sororities  now  look  forward  to  it  every  year.

As  far  as  events  geared  towards  you,  the  High  Rho  (yours  truly),  I  am  thinking  about  having  a  barbeque  on  March  28th,  which  is  a  Sunday,  and  also  Wrestle  Mania.  The  date  is  still  tentative  but  I  am  open  for  suggestions,  but  I  do  believe  that  this  would  be  a  great  way  to  meet  the  chapter!

Many  suggestions  have  been  proposed  for  ideas  of  events  which  Include:

-‐ Golf

-‐ Tennis

-‐ Soccer

-‐ Flag  Football

-‐ Volleyball

-‐ Softball

-‐ Casino  night

-‐ Bowling

These  are  just  a  few  suggestions  for  events  to  have  with  alumni.  If  you  have  any  suggestion  or  will  like  to  have  one  of  these  events  planned  feel  free  to  send  me  an  email  and  I  will  get  working  on  it  very  soon.  I  just  need  to  know  which  idea  is  to  your  liking.

These  are  some  of  the  events  going  on  and  preparations  for  Greek  Week  are  underway  as  well.

Although  we  have  many  events  going  on  this  semester  many  brothers  have  attributed  Lambda  Chi  Alpha  with  their  successes  and  are  looking  forward  to  a  bright  future.  The  following  statements  are  from  the  current  brothers  stating  what  they  are  doing  and  plan  to  do….

Brother  Kevin  Arellano,  “Although  I  am  a  JI  (just  initiated),  I  already  have  the  desire

to  be Kappa  as  well  as  Phi  in  this  chapter.  Lambda  Chi  has  helped  me  already,  in  such  a  short  amount  of  time  to  turn  my  life  around  to  a  certain  extent,  and  I  can  only  look  at  the  future  with  excitement  and  hope  that  my  life  will  continue  to  be  lead  on  the  right  path  with  the  help  of  all  my  brothers.  I  love  every  thing  that  Lambda  Chi  Alpha  has  offered  me  so  far,  from  the  feeling  of  belonging  to  the  passion  that  has  been  instilled  in  my  heart.  For  this  reason  I  have  brought  my  older  brother  into  the  world  of  Lambda  Chi  and  he  will  be  rushing  with  us  this  semester.  Which  is  the  start  of  a  long  line  of  Arellanos  that  will  hopefully  cross  to  the  other  side  and  that  I  will  have  the  honor  of  calling  my  brothers  in  ZAX.”

Brother  Edward  O’Hara,  “After  graduating  from  UTEP  I  plan  on  returning  to  school  for  my  MBA.    I  am  currently  the  Scholastic  Chair  of  Lambda  Chi.  My  goal  is  to  raise  the  overall  chapters  GPA  by  setting  standards  and  monitoring  classroom  performance.  I  can  honestly  say  that  joining  Lambda  Chi  Alpha  was  the  best  decision  I  ever  made.”

Brother  Alex  Muñoz,  “I  am  a  senior  with  a  4.0  GPA  at  UTEP  and  I  have  been  involved  in  several  student  organizations,  and  have  held  diverse  leadership  positions.    I  currently  serve  as  President  of  the  Student  Government  Association  and  have  been  a  brother  of  Lambda  Chi  Alpha  since  May  2009.

What  do  I  plan  to  do:  I  will  be  moving  to  New  York  City  upon  graduation  as  I  have  accepted  a  job  offer.    In  the  meantime,  I  plan  to  be  more  involved  in  Lambda  Chi  ALphaas  my  term  as  SGA  President  will  end  this  following  May.    I  plan  on  taking  an  officer  position  in  our  chapter  and  continue  the  great  work  and  traditions  of  the  brothers  of  Zeta  Epsilon.

Brother  Lorenzo  Villa,  “I  have  been

Lambda  Chi  Alpha  –  Zeta  Epsilon

(Continued)

deployed  to  Iraq  once  and  Afghanistan  twice.  My  job  was  infantry  or  military  police.  I  was  honorable  discharge  from  the  military  in  December  2008  with  60%  disability  from  injuries  I  obtained  in  combat.  I  returned  to  El  Paso  to  attend  UTEP  to  pursue  a  B.A.  in  Political  Science  and  I  hope  to  return  and  work  for  the  federal  government  as  an  ATF  agent.  During  my  second  semester  at  UTEP  I  was  introduced  to  members  of  Lambda  Chi  Alpha  and  was  really  impressed  on  how  close  of  a  brotherhood  they  had,  something  I  had  missed  from  the  military.  I  am  happy  that  I  rushed  Lambda  Chi  Alpha  and  now  that  I  am  on  the  other  side  I  want  to  be  part  of  this  chapter’s  growth.  I  am  currently  the  new  High  Delta  and  hope  I  can  rush  more  good  men  of  character  into  the  fraternity.”

As  you  can  see  we  have  a  plethora  of  brothers  with  many  amazing  goals,  and  more  introductions  in  future  newsletters  are  in  the  works.  If  you  have  any  suggestion  for  our  brothers  on  their  ventures  for  the  working  force,  let  me  know  and  I’ll  be  sure  to  put  it  in  the  next  newsletter.

In  other  news  I  am  also  working  on  getting  the  Zeta  Epsilon  Zeta  Chapter  Alumni  Association  started!  Plans  to  have  it  up  and  running  by  June  1st  would  be  incredible,  but  there  are  a  few  steps  I  need  to  take  that  include  alumni.  That  being  said  if  you  would  like  to  take  part  in  the  process  let  us  know  so  we  can  get  this  started.

My  goal  is  to  have  an  amazing  Alumni  Association  set  for  future  generations  to  have  an  eclectic  network  system  to  aid  associates,  brothers  and  a  better  outreaching  with  you!

Now  just  as  a  reminder  we  have  meeting  on  Monday’s  in  the  Student  Union  East  in  the  University  Suite  on  the  third  floor.  Your  attendance  is  greatly  encouraged  if  you  would  like  to  see  for  yourself  how  the  fraternity  is  doing.

A  new  tradition  started  here  at  the  Zeta  Epsilon  is  the  unofficial  installment  of  “real  announcements.”  This  was  started  in  order  for  us  to  just  have  a  good  laugh  after  an  official  meeting  to  end  on  a  good  note.  So  my  goal  is  to  bring  you  closer  to  our  jib  jabs  to  each  other  by  gathering  the  best  one  and  relating  them  to  you.  This  past  week  the  real  announcement  was  on  our  Brother  Adam  Setra:  “Why  is  Adam  Setra  dress  like  Mr.  Rogers…?  Won’t  you  be  my  neighbor”

Of  course  since  most  of  these  are  visual  announcements  I  will  always  try  to  include  a  picture  so  that  you  can  relate  it.

I  would  also  like  to  use  this  newsletter  to  inform  alumni  about  what  other  alumni  are  up  to.  If  you  have  any  announcements  you  would  like  other  brothers  to  know,  shoot  me  an  email  and  I  will  post  it  in  the  next  issue.

With  that  Alumni  Brother  Ricky  Nichols  is  having  his  monthly  bash  downtown  at  1914.

For  further  information  contact  him  at  915.727.2924,  email:  [email protected]  or  on  facebook:  http://www.facebook.com/richols

This  section  is  reserved  for  Brother  Joey  Olivarez  with  rants  about  whatever:  life,  our  chapter  or  whatever  comes  to  mind.

Okay… Real Quick.... I don't know about you guys but some things in college annoy the hell out of me. Picture it, you’re sitting in class trying to pay attention to the professor and right when he is about to explain something very important, some idiot asks the dumbest question you have ever heard. You know whom I’m talking about. They are that guy or girl who thinks they need to be the teacher's pet like sucking up to them is going to get a better grade. Great job trying to get noticed in a class of 300, dumbass. Sometimes it isn't to suck up, they just really are wondering the answer to the question. It makes you think they just let anybody into college these days.

I don't hate these people. I don't dislike these people. They are just a part of everyday life. And with that, these are just some words to live by... so Lambda Chi’s, please, please, please, DONT BE THAT GUY!!!

Alright  Guys  …  Real  Quick

Many  things  are  happening  here  at  Zeta  Epsilon.  With  out  amazing  brothers  like  you  that  helped  endure  the  hardships  and  many  accomplishments  that  this  chapter  has  gone  through.  We  would  not  be  here  today.

This  being  the  first  newsletter  I  hope  this  has  highlighted  the

things  that  would  like  to  know.  If  you  have  any  suggestion  about  what  you  would  like  to  see  in  the  next  issue,  shoot  me  an  email  and  your  questions,  comments  or  concerns  will  be  answered.

Last  semester  we  reached  the  100k  mark!
