The event organizers have compiled a very exciting list of events for the coming year and I would really urge each member of our club to make an effort to attend as many of these events as possible. One event in particular that you must try to attend is our “Grondpad bakkie toer”. In order to accommodate more of our junior members, the rule on the age of the vehicles participating has been relaxed a bit in order to allow newer than 1975 bakkies to also participate. Happy motoring! Danie Schmidt

A word from the Editor

Phillip Rosser

The 2017 George Old Car Show has come and gone. All that were involved were tired at the end of the weekend, but we can proudly say that this was the biggest and best show ever! Baie geluk, Philip. I am making a desperate plea for contributions for the Spanner. It is impossible for me to write everything and report on all activities. So please get your pens out and start writing. It will be good to get the feedback on events from our members. The first event for 2017 was a great New Year’s Breakfast Run to a brand new venue at Peter Boshoff’s farm in Waboomskraal. What a great venue. We will visiting Peter there more often!

Our Club Patron, Oom Charles van Zyl was the Editor of the Spanner for many years before. When visiting him recently he gave me a few submissions for the Spanner which I will place in the next few issues. The first one in this issue deals with the heartache of restoration. Keep the wheels turning

The Leather Run

By Ria Shear

(A group of motorcycle enthusiasts rode from Port Elizabeth the George Old Car Show on Friday 10th February - Editor) With today’s hectic lifestyle, the memories of the bike run we undertook four years ago kept resurfacing. The freedom, wind in our faces and the beauty of the Garden Route road inspired a group of friends to once again take to the open road leaving from Port Elizabeth culminating at The George Old Car Show.

Page 10: February 2017 Newsletter - scocc.co.za Feb 2017.pdf · 3 Suid-Kaap Oumotorklub Southern Cape Old Car Club Website: P.O. Box 1749, George, 6530 2017 COMMITTEE: Club Patron Charles

Thursday arrived, the day we were leaving for Port Elizabeth, and our planned departure time of 12pm from George was delayed by Pete’s wheel not yet ready to be collected from the engineers. By now the bikes were loaded on the trailer and we were packed and ready to go. Eventually around 3.30pm the wheel was ready and we finally left George. The only thought now was to make it to PE before dark so that the wheel could be put on the sidecar of the Harley. This was finally achieved with the help of torches, lamps and willing hands! The beer later at Willems’ house was more than welcome and definitely enjoyed by all. Friday dawned a beautiful day and we were all ready to get to the fuel station by 6.30am after a cup of strong, home brewed coffee. Michael Webber and Mike Alexander left on Harleys, Pete took his Jap and Ria followed with the Isuzu and bike trailer. On the ride to the fuel station, the early morning commuters were full of open stares and interest in these rare motorbikes that were on the road and so began the scurry of photos and selfies from petrol attendants and passersby. After filling up we met a very organised Willem du Toit on the N2 who thankfully produced a spare battery to replace the flat one in Mikes’ Harley….. and so began the first leg of the journey to Jeffreys Bay. It was great to once again experience the engine noises, along with of backfires synonymous with Harleys, the smell of the open road and the laughter and camaraderie of friends.Pete had said that he would be happy to just make it to Jeffreys on the Jap and he almost made it. The trip itself was uneventful until he got to the Jeffreys Bay off ramp where the bike started to lose power and eventually stopped about 50m from the top of the intersection. He ended up pushing the Jap into the fuel station where it took its place of honor amongst the other bikes in front of the building. The Jap was eventually loaded onto the trailer and remained there for the rest of the trip. How wonderful it was in Jeffreys to see so many vintage cars parked on the forecourt! The vibe was festive and happy with old friends reuniting, oohs and aaahs over the vehicles from people filling up with fuel and many cameras out taking

Page 11: February 2017 Newsletter - scocc.co.za Feb 2017.pdf · 3 Suid-Kaap Oumotorklub Southern Cape Old Car Club Website: P.O. Box 1749, George, 6530 2017 COMMITTEE: Club Patron Charles

photographs and those inevitable selfies. Even the forlorn Jap standing sentry on the trailer had some pictures taken! The next leg of the journey was the most important one……breakfast (finally!!!) at Storms River. Breakfast also heralded Sep Serfontein who had driven all the way up from the Wilderness on his BMW to join us for the rest of the run. Breakfast was quite a leisurely affair with lots of reminiscing from the same trip four years ago. Outside the parking area had filled up with vintage and classic cars being driven and being towed on trailers and the public seemed fascinated once again with many pictures being taken of all the vehicles. Next stop – Tsitsikamma and the first posed group photo!! By now the sun was out in full force and by the time we got near The Crags another stop was definitely in order to quench our thirst and stretch legs again. I think by now we were getting used to the stares and constant pictures being taken of the bikes. A gorgeous day for the trip and our penultimate leg was from The Crags with a push through to Sedgefield for the last refuel before George. Communication got a bit twisted here due to flat cell phone batteries (how on earth did we manage before cell phones???) with Mike and Willem filling at one station, Pete filling at another one and Sep going right past us all! We finally made it to George 24 hours after we left and headed straight to the grounds to park the bikes for the show. All in all, a fantastic trip, ending in a braai with great smells, great noise, a beverage or two and of course, great friends! This trip will be repeated……hopefully with more bikes, more friends and possibly from a new location!

2017 George Old Car Show

The 2017 George Old Car Show was the 21st old car show hosted by our club. After the humble beginnings of the first show held in 1997 on the farm Blackwood of the late Paul Fick we can be proud of this year’s show where 1070 cars, tractors, motorcycles and stationary engines were on display.

Page 15: February 2017 Newsletter - scocc.co.za Feb 2017.pdf · 3 Suid-Kaap Oumotorklub Southern Cape Old Car Club Website: P.O. Box 1749, George, 6530 2017 COMMITTEE: Club Patron Charles

15

Soon the sun popped out and produced a beautiful day. People arrived by the hoards and the public parking space started taking strain. It was a beautiful sight to see so many people wandering around amongst the exhibits. The smell of food from the stalls lured many people to fill their empty stomachs and the interesting items for sale at the other stalls also had a constant stream of people passing through. On Sunday the disappointment was huge when the weather did not want to clear. Even though it rained for most of the morning, many people still visited the show, albeit significantly less than the 2016 Sunday attendance figure. The huge prizes of the lucky draw did however encourage exhibitors to remain at the show for longer. Unfortunately the club’s 1962 Bedford Fire Truck was unable to join in the Thembalethu Drive Thru a week before the show. The purpose of the trip is to make the local communities of Thembalethu and Pacaltsdorp aware of the show and give them a glimpse of some of the vehicles that will be on display. The 2017 George Old Car Show broke all previous records with a total attendance figure of over 12800 people. This successful show could however not be possible without the commitment of the team that supported me this year. Each member spent many, many hours

of their valuable time to attend meetings, phone exhibitors, follow up queries and help with the physical tasks. Wish to extend a BIG thank you to each and every one. In addition, the sponsors must also be thanked for their continued support. Without these sponsorships, especially the Premier sponsor, Oakhurst Insurance and Gold sponsors, Protea Hotel by Marriott King George, the George Municipality, SAB and R&S Communications we will not be able to host the show. The thank you is also extended to the numerous smaller sponsors. Lastly, I must also extend a BIG thank you to each exhibitor, some travelling several thousands of kilometres to bring their cars to the show. Without the commitment of these enthusiasts, we simply will not have a show. We will shortly select a few local deserving charities to whom donations will be made. See you all at the next George Old Car Show on 10 & 11 February 2018. Phillip Rosser Chairman: 2017 Organising committee

SAVVA Technical Tip 116

Getting that shine back

I pulled a car out of the garage after giving it six months rest and was very aware that over the 30 years of it’s existence the original white paint had taken on a “yellowish” glow. I was also very aware that no amount of polishing would bring it back to life regardless of what the directions or claim to fame the packaging on the polish tins say. The only way was to strip the top gunk off and re-polish it with a good wax – as the body shops and used car dealers do. This can be a D.I.Y. task and done by hand but a far more civilized method is to use a fine burnishing compound (often called tooth paste by the trade) and a slow speed buff fitted with a foam pad. This is a messy operation so it’s best to park in the middle of the lawn and either wear old cloths or go naked. Modus operandi: Wash the car to remove dust particles that can scratch the paint surface, then, spread some burnishing compound on the panel you are about to attack, wet the foam pad by dipping it into a bucket of water and keep it wet by occasionally dipping it in the bucket, go over the surface one panel at a time at a slow speed. Once all the panels have been compounded the car can be washed and a final coat of good quality polish applied. Try to use good wax rather than the liquid “quick fix” stuff. The above has always been a problem for us DIY types as multi speed electric buffing machines are very expensive, however, some manufactures have recently introduced smaller lighter variable speed DIY versions at a much lower price. The professionals would obviously prefer the fancy heavy models but being an amateur I prefer the lighter DIY unit as they are easier to use.

18

A Ryobi variable speed buffing machine was purchased for just under R1000.00 and a tube of “tooth paste” at around R100.00 . The pads don’t last long so buy a couple of replacements also at around R100 each Shield polishes which we used come highly recommended

Page 19: February 2017 Newsletter - scocc.co.za Feb 2017.pdf · 3 Suid-Kaap Oumotorklub Southern Cape Old Car Club Website: P.O. Box 1749, George, 6530 2017 COMMITTEE: Club Patron Charles

19

Hy het my ‘n 1941 Amerikaanse motor

By voltooiing sal die eienaar waarskynlik R100 000.00 moet opdok. Walter P Chrysler skryf oor sy produk: "The Chrysler Six carries the undeniable mark of quality that elusive, indefinite, but unmistakable impress which characterizes any object of inbuilt worth".

Jy kry hom moeilik in rat.
