A Few More Thoughts from Ron

Recently I was reading from the end of a few of Paul’s letters, and in many places he somewhat sums up his ideas and life’s work in a few words. I thought that might be a good theme to this ‘next to the last’ newsletter article. I was thrilled with the vote to elect Dr. Taylor and pleased at the responses we have received from those unable to attend the meeting and from around the country. I am leaving you in good hands, and the future you will build together will be a good one. Your leaders have planned well and wisely! Here are my few words you might consider—these are things our time together has taught me.

Commitment Matters Attending worship and making a financial commitment that is meaningful to you are key for our congregation’s future. We are strong because a significant number of people understand that message.

Caring Matters Together with our amazing Stephen Ministers, Dawson, Beverly and I spend a great deal of time caring for people in times of illness and crisis or just listening. Doing that and continuing to do that makes this the beautiful congregation that it is.

Mission Matters Driven by volunteer efforts at the Bargain Box and our commitment to denominational giving, NUCC is a leader in making a difference in the community and around the world. The time and talent we share with others makes us who we are, and when we are not involved powerfully and fully in mission, we loose our core and reason for existence. Don’t forget: if we get the mission part right, the rest falls into place!

Music Matters That we have an excellent program goes without saying. This factor of our life at NUCC is also at the core of who we are as a congregation. While musical tastes will evolve over time—and I’ve witnessed a good bit of this during my years of ministry, excellence matters most.

Endowment Matters The idea of leaving behind more than an empty pew or planting trees whose shade I will not live to enjoy, just makes sense to me. Investing in an institution, through planned giving, to continue the support and the dreams I have had for that institution is right at the center of my faith commitment. In these last couple of months together, I would love to share why I think that’s important. Just give me a call!

Be kind to the staff and to one another because we’re all God’s children. Be patient with yourself and with others, because no one’s perfect. Keep talking—because the church is one of the only places in our current society where people can agree to disagree without being disagreeable. That one fact, that so characterizes NUCC, will make our congregation more and more important in the days that are ahead! Being inclusive and open hearted is the center of the message of Jesus, and people are looking for that. It is the key to our future growth and vitality!

Thank you and as always, I welcome your questions or comments or just a simple conversation. My cell phone number is still 239-253-1512. Give me a call if you would like a visit!

With love,

Ron

Senior Minister-Elect

German mystic Meister Eckhart once wrote: “If the only prayer you ever say in your entire life is thank you, it will be enough.” And yet, somehow, it does not feel enough. I am deeply humbled, grateful, and immensely excited to serve as your next Senior Minister. I want to publicly thank the Senior Minister Search Committee for their diligent work and their support and care for me during this process. I was surprised by a visit on candidacy weekend by my parents, my aunt, and a dear friend from Dallas, for which I will be eternally grateful. I will also remain grateful to our committed lay and staff leadership who have

worked diligently for a long time to ensure a smooth and healthy transition. Their vision and guidance is the kind that makes good churches great, and we are indeed a great church with an exciting future ahead of us. Lastly, while we still have time, I would be remiss if I did not thank my colleague, friend, and mentor, Ron, for his careful listening, gentle guidance, and encouragement, both in my role as Associate Minister, and also during this process. When he announced his retirement, we made two commitments to each other: (1) That we would always treat each other with respect and sensitivity, understanding that a lot of emotions surface during times like this; and (2) That we would do everything in our power, no matter the outcome of the search, to ensure that a healthy and smooth transition would occur both for him and for the church, with as little anxiety as possible. By God’s grace, I believe we are keeping to those commitments. Now, for some brief answers to the logistical questions that have arisen:

(1) I will assume the office of Senior Minister during worship on Sunday, February 21. I hope that you will be at one of the two worship services to celebrate this exciting time in the life of the congregation. Until then, Ron remains Senior Minister. We are also fortunate that Ron will remain on our staff until April 3.(2) I will be formally installed during a worship service in January of 2017. I made this decision for a few reasons. I want to allow the Sanctuary remodeling to be complete. I also want to allow for as many members to be present as possible. And I simply did not feel that we could add one more special event to our spring schedule.(3) Lastly, yes, we are searching for our next Associate Minister. Again, the leadership in their wisdom did not want to be understaffed for an extended period of time. So, Joan Byerhof has accepted the request to chair the search. Joan served on the Senior Minister Search Committee, so she has the wisdom and logistics of that search to bring. She also has a deep love of this congregation and many connections across the church. I am grateful that committee has already met once and will be using a job description that was created and approved by the Church Council. My colleague, Rev. Beverly Duncan, has once again agreed to serve as Interim Associate Minister during the transition time. Her change in role becomes effective April 1, 2016. She is a great gift to us and I am grateful for her willingness to serve.

Thank you. My heart is overflowing with hope, anticipation, and gratitude. I hope that you can find someone to thank this week for making a difference in your life.

Grace and Peace,

Rev. Dr. Dawson B. TaylorSenior Minister-Elect

What Is the Future of Solar Energy in Florida?

While solar energy has been expanding nationally, Florida the “Sunshine State” has not been a solar leader. It ranks third in solar capacity but 13th in installations, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association. Solar represents less than 1 percent of Florida’s energy generation, and the state projects only a tiny fraction of percentage growth over the next decade.

One reason for this lack of growth is that Florida is one of only four states that prohibit its citizens from buying electricity from anyone other than a utility company. The prohibition limits customer choice and blocks the growth of this abundant, clean, homegrown energy source.

A grass-roots citizen group, which is leading a campaign to amend the Florida Constitution to end this restriction, is rais-ing the issue. The group believes that the choice to harness solar power should be available to everyone. The League of Women Voters’ Fact Sheet on the proposed amendment explains that by allowing the purchase of electricity generated by solar energy from providers other than utility companies, Floridians would have more alternatives in powering their homes and businesses. They would also have choices in who provides that energy to them. With no changes in the law, those wanting to go solar will continue to pay the cost of equipment and installation, which is usually tens of thousands of dollars for an average residential system. The amendment would allow Florida consumers to pay only for the energy that they use from their own system without the upfront costs.

As the third-ranking state in population and still growing, Florida faces the challenge of ever increasing energy demands. What role will solar energy play in meeting that challenge?

Our Turtle Concert Has Arrived!Naples United Church of Christ

5200 Crayton Rd. Naples, FL 34103(239) 261-5469

February 7, 2016

FREE to the Public

Sunday, February 7 ~ 2:00pmThe Sanctuary Choir and a chamber orchestra under the direction of Dr. Becky Weese (Director of Music at NUCC) will perform a 35-minute work entitled, “Song of Wisdom from Old Turtle.” The work is based on a children’s book, “Old Turtle,” by Douglas Wood. The composition was commissioned and first performed by The Turtle Creek Chorale of Dallas, TX, in 2000 and was narrated by Marlo Thomas. Our narrator, Carol Fox, is a member of Naples United Church of Christ. She has appeared in numerous productions with the Naples Players at Sugden Theater.

In addition to the major work, you will hear the children’s choir sing a lovely song entitled, “The Turtle and the Flamingo.” It is tale of an unusual love story.

Special guests, the Whizpops, from atop the rocky slopes of the hippest town in Montana will also make an appearance.

Sunday Morning ~ 9:00amThe Whizpops will perform in the church’s newly-renovated McSpadden Hall. The show is open to all children in the community! No admission charge!

They will travel deep into the “Sea Blue Sea”, their new collection of original educational songs. They are a Parents’ Choice and Child Award-winning band featuring two elementary school teachers.

“Thank You” to the congregation of Naples United Church of Christ in helping save tabs for the Shriners Children’s Hospitals. On behalf of Jim Wood, Potentate of Araba Shrine Center in Fort Myers, Florida and all the Shriners in North America, we want to thank you for taking the little bit of extra time to save the tabs from soup, soda, pet food, and beverage cans. The Shriners operate twenty-two hospitals in North America that help thousands and thousands of children each year, through burns care, orthopedic care, spinal cord injury rehabilitation, and cleft lip and palate. The Shriners help improve the lives of these children by providing pediatric specialty care, as well as the implementation of innovative research in these areas. Always remember that the Shriners Hospitals for Children provide these services without charge to the patients and their families.

By saving the aluminum tabs and passing them on for recycling, you help the Shriners provide some of the expensive diagnostic and operation room equipment, as well as books and other educational materials for the patients. It takes about 1,680 tabs to make a pound.

Our basket is in the narthex of the church where you can drop off your tabs. I check the basket regularly and deliver the tabs to Araba Shrine Center in Fort Myers for recycling. You can drop off your tabs at the church or call me at 947-9340, and I will be more than happy to pick up your tabs if you wish.

Thank you for your caring support.

Youth Christian EducationHere A Turtle, There A Turtle…

The start of 2016 has been a whirlwind of excitement and new beginnings. What a great time to be a child growing up in the embrace of the large and loving family that is NUCC.

So far this brand new year, a big part of our children’s ministry has centered around Carretta Carretta, our very own sea turtle created by Susan Pratt. We have had so many exciting turtle related activities! Dr. Becky is teaching us a special turtle song and Jeanne Snedeker is teaching us movements to go with it. Derek DeWitt, a sea turtle expert, came to teach the children about sea turtles and answer their questions. And Susan Pratt gave a children’s sermon about sea turtles.

Our children are becoming sea turtle experts, but what do you know about sea turtles? How do sea turtle hatchlings compare to our “hatchlings” that you see sitting up front for the children’s sermon each week?

Did you know…?1. Sea turtle hatchlings sometimes mistake garbage for healthy things to ingest.2. Sea turtles are supposed to follow the natural light on the horizon but sometimes artificial lights attract their attention and draw them towards danger, away from the best path.3. Sea turtles are supposed to follow the natural slope of the sand so they can find God’s ocean, but sometimes there are obstacles that keep them from reaching their true destination.

The trials of baby sea turtles sound like metaphors for the obstacles that children face; there have always been trials for children and parents. This hasn’t changed much over the years.

But our households and communities have changed. Many children come from single-parent homes. Most children don’t live in the same household as their grandparents, aunts, and uncles: most don’t even live in the same town as their relatives.

This is where you can make all the difference. Although you are not a blood relative of our NUCC “hatchlings,” you are their church family.

With your smiles and love, our NUCC hatchlings will find the right path. The path that leads them to the light. The path that enables them to let their light shine.

Wishing You Peace,

Jane CoinéAssistant CE Director – Children & Youth

Short Stories by Jesus: The Enigmatic Parables of a Controversial Rabbi Rev. Dr. Kathleen Kircher, Retired Episcopal Priest

Description: In her new book, Amy-Jill Levine, renowned biblical scholar, interweaves history and spiritual analysis to explore Jesus’ most popular teaching parables, exposing their misinterpretations and making them lively and relevant for

modern readers. Life in first-century Galilee and Judea was very different from our world today, and many traditional interpretations of Jesus’ stories ignore this disparity. Date: Monday (Feb. 1) 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Final class. Incarnate: The Body of Christ in an Age of Disengagement by Michael FrostRev. Dr. Kathleen Kircher, retired Episcopal Priest Description: Michael Frost believes that the story of Christianity is a story of incarnation—God taking on flesh and dwelling among the people God created. And yet so much of contemporary Christian culture is rooted not in incarnation but in escape—escape from the earth to heaven, escape from the suffer-ing of this world, escape even from one another. If Jesus was God incarnate, the church is in danger of being excarnate. Michael Frost expertly and prophetically exposes the gap between the faith we profess and the faith we practice. Date: Mondays (Feb. 8, 22, 29 & Mar. 7) 9:30 – 11:00 a.m.Cost: $12.00 per book (limited copies are available in the church office or you can order the book or the e-book).Registration: Not required, all are welcome.

David Brooks is a nationally syndicated columnist and a regular on NPR and “Meet the Press.”Dates: Wednesday (Feb. 3) 6:30 - 8:00pm. Final class. OR Thursday (Feb. 4) 2:00 - 3:30pm. Final class. (Identical evening and afternoon class)Cost: $20.00 per book (limited copies are available in the church office or you can order the book or the e-book yourself)Registration: Not required, all are welcome.

Searching for Sunday: Loving, Leaving, and Finding the ChurchRev. Dr. Dawson Taylor, Associate Minister Description: From the New York Times bestselling author Ra-chel Held Evans comes a book that is both a heartfelt ode to the past and hopeful gaze into the future of what it means to be a part of the church. Like millions of her millennial peers, Rachel Held Evans didn’t want to go to church anymore. Centered around seven sacraments, Evans’ quest takes readers through a liturgi-cal year with stories that are funny, heartbreaking, and sharply honest. Searching for Sunday is about overcoming cynicism to find hope and, somewhere in between, Church. Join Rev. Dr. Dawson B. Taylor as we continue the discussion about the “church of the future” and what it may or may not look like, as well as what younger generations desire from the church today. Dates: Mondays (Feb. 1, 8, 22) 1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Jesus, Judaism, and Jewish-Christian RelationsSpecial guest lecturer and preacherDr. Amy-Jill Levine Description: Dr. Amy-Jill Levine, Professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies at Vanderbilt University explores Jesus, Judaism, and Jewish-Christian Relations. Judaism and Christianity share common roots but have different branches. Recognizing both roots and branches allows Jews and Christians better both to understand our histories and to celebrate our differences. A self-described “Yankee Jewish feminist who teaches in a predominantly Christian divinity school in the buckle of the Bible Belt,” Professor Levine combines historical-critical rigor, literary-critical sensitivity, and a frequent dash of humor with a commitment to eliminating anti-Jewish, sexist, and homophobic theologies. On Friday, February 26, at 7:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m., Dr. Levine’s first lecture on The Common Misconceptions Jews and Christians Have of Each Other will be part of Shabbat services held at Temple Shalom, 4630 Pine Ridge Rd, Naples, FL 34119. The lecture will be followed by a recep-tion hosted by Temple Shalom and we ask that you register so that our hosts can prepare accordingly. There is no charge for this lecture. Donations are welcome.

On Saturday, February 27, at 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., Dr. Levine will share her expertise on Hearing the Parables through Jewish Ears: of Pearls and Prodigals and

Misunderstanding Judaism means Misunderstanding Jesus. Saturday’s program will be held at NUCC. Registration is requested and the cost of $60.00 through February 13. Lunch is included. After February 14, the cost for Saturday’s lecture and lunch will be $75.00.

FEBRUARY IS VOLUNTEER MONTH!I recently read this quote from Mother Teresa: “Love is not patronizing and charity isn’t pity - it is about love. Charity and love are the same - with charity you give love. So don’t just give money, but reach out your hand instead.”

Our church, Precious Cargo, and the Bargain Box all function because of volunteers! From the person greeting at the door on Sunday, to the person serving on a board or committee, to the person singing in the choir, or sharing with our youth, or putting labels on a mailing, or preparing Communion, or sorting clothes, or delivering soup or donated food...each is a volunteer! With each volunteer, service to others is increased in ways not fully realized! We have over 500 volunteers pres-ently helping out...can YOU help, too?

Please complete an “Opportunities for Involvement” brochure form found in the pew rack. There is certainly a place for you to be doing something you really enjoy - while helping others in some way!

On Sunday, February 7, you will also have the opportunity to meet and talk to representatives of several of our mission partners - sharing their need for volunteers! Please stop and talk with them in the Gathering Place that day! Volunteering for them can really make a difference! They need YOU!

Make February the month YOU do more than YOU have to - because YOU want to!

Board of Mission and OutreachA Letter from Guadalupe CenterDear Naples United Church of Christ,

We have exciting news to share. Due to your generosity, all of our educational programs continue to thrive with record numbers of students enrolled in our Early Childhood Education, After-School, and Tutor Corps Programs. Thanks to you, the Guadalupe Center has more than 120 students in college, blazing their trail to a brighter future, not only for themselves, but for their families as well. You have helped students like Israel. He grew up in Immokalee where he attended a number of elementary schools and struggled with English. From an early age he was fascinated with flight. “Throughout Kindergarten, my assignments came back with a sad face drawn in red on the top,” he remembers. “At a parent conference, the translator told my parents that I was failing and my chances of advancing to the next grade were slim. But I made a pinkie-promise to my teacher that I would someday become a second grader.” Because of Israel’s love for learning, the generosity of people like you, and the Guadalupe Center, Israel became part of the Guadalupe’s college-prep Tutor Corps Program in high school. He is now attending Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University studying to be the rocket scientist he has always dreamed of becoming.

The educational opportunities offered by the Guadalupe Center are only available through your generosity. Your investment in the futures of other children like Israel will enable us to continue our mission to “break the cycle of poverty through education.” We have served over 1,100 students.

THANK YOU

Oh, is it cold or what? For a while, we thought winter was going to skip us this year. Hey look on the bright side: all of our customers and, equally as important, our volunteers are back!! The cold weather drove them down here; no snow for us in Naples, Florida.

The cold rainy days make us quite busy, which is fun. If it’s too cold for the beach, no problem, come on down to the Bargain Box where it’s nice and warm and shop all day. Well almost all day, 10-4 we are open.

Now that the holidays are over, we can get back into the normal routine again. Our volunteers are doing a great job and working hard. Keep up the great work. We appreciate it. It’s been a great start to season. So far, donations have been coming in daily; but we could always use more. The merchandise leaves the building as soon as it is priced and put on display. Or as we always like to say, “That item sold before it could collect any dust.”

We would like to give a little suggestion to all the gentleman out there: Valentine’s day is around the corner and our jewelry selection is packed with goodies.

AGING WELL SEMINARS:DEMYSTIFYING IMPORTANT LIFE ISSUES

A group of four church members formed a committee and have been working for a year to bring information to our congregation on critical life issues that we, and/or our family and/or our friends are likely to encounter. If we fail to understand these issues ahead of time, it may result in reducing or even foregoing important options that might have been available.

Based on input from our congregation and other professionals in our community, we have selected four topics for our inaugural event. We have spent a good deal of time researching and finding the best speakers available on each of these subjects. Seminars will last 90 minutes and be presented every Wednesday morning in February from 10-11:30 in our newly renovated McSpadden Hall.

The topics are as follows:

1.Dr. Allen Weiss, CEO of Naples Community Hospital will speak on the latest advances in medicine and their im-pact upon our quality of life. Dr. Weiss will also discuss the Blue Zone Project which is currently being introduced into our Naples Community. (February 3, 2016)

2.Bruce Rosenblatt, Founder and Owner of Senior Housing Solutions will speak about understanding the pros and cons of a Retirement Community versus Staying at Home. Bruce has spent 30 years in the senior housing business and has overseen over 75 retirement communities including three in Naples. For those seniors who decide to live at home, Bruce’s company also helps with home health care. (February 10, 2016)

3.Pamela Oliveira and Dr. Paul Mitchell will speak on understanding the importance of and difference between Hos-pice and Palliative Care. Pamela has been involved in chaplaincy at NCH, AVOW Hospice and AVOW Palliative Medicine Service. Dr. Mitchell is the Chief Medical Officer of AVOW. (February 17, 2016)

4.Catherine Cruikshank, Director of Education of the Florida Gulf Coast Alzheimer’s Association, will speak on understanding the latest thinking about Dementia and its treatment (including Alzheimer’s Disease). (February 24, 2016)

For more detail about all these programs and the specific content of each program, please refer to the NUCC Adult Enrichment 2015-2016 Program Brochure that was mailed to all members and can also be picked up at the church.

These seminars are free of charge and are part of the Adult Education outreach of our church. There has been great interest expressed, and we anticipate they will be well attended as the topics are important and the speakers are outstanding. We look forward to your input, as we have several other topics identified for seminars in future years. This year these seminars are being offered only to our congregation and friends of our congregation. In future years we might open them to the public based upon your feedback.

Book Recommendations~ Recommended by Don Snyder

Not in God’s Name by Jonathan Sacks In this century we have witnessed a surge of religious extremism and violence in the name of God. In this book, the author ex-plores the acts of violence and its relationship to religion focusing on the historic tensions between Judaism, Christianity and Islam. In the author’s own words, ”This book is a rebuke to all those who kill in the name of the God of life, wage war in the name of the God of peace, hate in the name of the God of love, and practice cruelty in the name of the God of compassion.”

In God’s Holy Light: Wisdom from the Desert Monastics by Joan Chittister One of the most interesting things of the book is that the Desert Monastics were dealing in their time with the same issues we are facing - things like not getting caught up in materialism and selfishness. Their advice is about how to simplify our lives and seek true spirituality. There are 35 short chapters with good advice for modern Christians.

Why Faith Matters by David Wolpe This book is an articulate defense of religion in America. The author acknowledges that “ religion begins in wonder, flourishes in relationship and is realized through living with an awareness of holiness.” He says, “Only faith that understands human frailty and human nobility, that believes holiness is not separate from compassion offers the possibility of a path out of our wilderness.”
