What Really Matters...11

Dear Friend, My grandfather on my mother's side lived to nearly 100. In my early 20s, when Grandpa was in his late 80s, I remember barely being able to keep up with him as he speed-walked the neighborhood. Grandpa was a puritan and always espoused, "Everything white is evil: flour, sugar, milk..." And perhaps he was right. He lived healthily as a near-centenarian through exercise, practic-ing his faith, being part of a community and eating well. It appears Grandpa was onto something. The Okina-wan Centenarian Study found that inhabitants of Okina-wa, Japan, not only have the longest life expectancy in

the world, they have the lowest frequency of the leading killers in the West: coronary heart disease, stroke and cancer. They not only live longer, they have quality of life for more years. What are we missing in the West that the Okinawans have found? From The Oki-nawa Program, based on Doctors Bradley and Craig Willcox and Makoto Suzukis' 25-year landmark study, "In Okinawa, the occurrence of heart disease is only one fifth that of American levels. The rate of breast, ovarian, and prostate cancers is less than a quarter of American levels. And the number of centenarians per hundred thousand is six times that of the United States. Most important, Okinawans have the world's longest disability-free life expectancy." The study found that a strong spiritual practice, low-calorie diet, continued physi-cal exercise and ongoing cognitive practices all lead to longevity. It's the culmination of practices that creates the tendency to live long and well. My grandpa somehow knew this innately. He was vibrant and active his whole life. Sandwiched between generations, I have one beloved and active parent plus daughters and grandchildren. I try to teach my daughters the importance of eating real, whole foods and avoiding processed foods or anything with a shelf life. I hope they will revere life, have faith, be physically active, part of a community and live vibrant, healthy lives...just like Grandpa.

Love in the Land of Dementia

Finding Hope in the Caregiver’s Journey

By Deborah Shouse

Caregiver Shouse celebrates spiritual lessons learned on her journey with her mother through

Alzheimers disease. When Alzheimer’s disease began to claim Deborah Shouse’s mother, it threatened the fabric of her parents’ long and loving marriage, and sowed the seeds of misery, frustration and discord that strained relationships with family and friends. But over time, the love her parents shared proved it could-n’t be broken, not even when memory and identity were all but gone. This book provides compelling evi-dence that love is the greatest healing force on earth. Shouse shows us how she and her father learned to walk her mother home, with light and love, with hope and dignity. This book will uplift you and leave you feeling like you spent time with a loving friend. “I have read hundreds of true stories about families dealing with Alzheimer’s disease. None was written more won-derfully or truthfully about grief, guilt, and yes, grace of caring for someone with this disease.”—LeAnn Thiemann, coauthor of Chicken Soup for the Care-giver’s Soul

Deborah Shouse’s writing has ap-peared in the Washington Post, the Christian Science Monitor, Reader’s Digest, Newsweek, Woman’s Day, Hemispheres, Family Circle, Spirituali-ty and Health, Chicago Tribune, and MS. She writes a weekly column on love stories for the Kansas City Star, coau-thored Working Women’s Communica-tions Guide, which is now in it’s 5th printing, and Antiquing for Dummies. She lives in Kansas City Missouri.

“You must do the things you think you cannot do.” —Eleanor Roosevelt

A nd what, you may ask, is one of the things I think I cannot

do? Moving the physical body in different patterns for an extend-ed length of time, better known as exer-cise, has been my lifetime nemesis. Reading an article entitled “Sitting is the New Smoking,” really made me think again about my sedentary lifestyle. Our bodies are designed to move. When we sit for extended periods of time our bod-ies shut down at the metabolic level. When legs are immobile, circulation slows. We use less blood sugar and burn less fat. A number of studies tell us we are at higher risk for diabetes, heart disease, different kinds of cancer and depression. I have been pretty faithful to my 30 minute walk each day; but, this now appears to be not nearly enough. One study reported that people spent an av-erage of 64 hours a week sitting, 28 hours standing and 11 hours milling about (nonexercise walking). Even those who exercise tend to undo the benefits of exercising by being more sedentary on the days they exercise. This scares me. I pride myself on my healthy lifestyle. My health is excellent for my age. I do most of the recommend-ed things: healthy nutrition, daily exer-cise, social interaction, daily spiritual practice, supplements and working with purpose at a job I love. It seems this is not enough to counteract the hours of sitting as I counsel people each day, sit at my computer and follow this all up with reading and TV watching. The remedy may be simpler than you think. Dr. Stuart McGill, director of the Spine Biomechanics Laboratory at the University of Waterloo tells us that in-terrupting our sedentary time as often as possible and making frequent posture changes is important. “Even breaks as short as one minute can improve your health.” Another alternative is to sit on a sta-bility ball. One of my colleagues has been doing this for some time. I need to follow her good example. Try an adjusta-ble desk that has heights for sitting and standing. You can also purchase an Er-gotron WorkFit that sits on top of the desk and enables you to adjust the

height of your computer. One man re-ported using a tread mill by his desk. A simpler way may be to use an under the desk stair-stepper, cycle or elliptical machine. Wonders never cease! I am trying to be open-minded as my seden-tary body and dreaming mind wanders from the topic. A friend and another colleague are sporting the FitBit bracelets and find them very helpful. In reading the re-views it would seem that the more re-cent FitBit Force is the most accurate and easy to use. It is a health tracker that measures your steps taken, floors climbed, time spent active and the quali-ty of your sleep. You can also enter when you are eating and water you are drink-ing. This seems like a good way to give you some feedback and help in goal-setting. There are other types of devices like this. I recommend checking out reviews before purchasing. Think about ways to walk more, stretch often, be more conscious of liv-ing in your body with awareness of how you move and be creative as you go about your daily life. I am again encour-aged by Eleanor Roosevelt, “In the long run, we shape our lives, and we shape ourselves. The process never ends until we die. And the choices we make are ultimately our own responsibility.” What can I say? I must do this thing I think I cannot do. What about you?

“Does he want to take yoga class?” I ask the mom who is doing every-thing possible to help her 14-year-old son out of depression. The power of choice must be in place. He came to class. I introduce an easy back

bend to reverse his sloping shoulders. He was protecting his heart from lots of loss-es. After class we visited a long while. It felt good to hear the young man open up. Intimacy is a private journey. Famous yogi (in KC April 4), Doug Keller, said it is not the event or people we remember, it is HOW WE FEEL in that moment. Intimacy takes many forms. One form of intimacy is cognitive or intellectual intimacy where two people exchange thoughts, share ideas and differences between their opinions. If they can do this in an open and comfortable way, it can be quite intimate. A second form of intimacy is experien-tial intimacy where people get together to actively involve themselves with each other in mutual activities, such as a yoga class. A third form of intimacy is emo-tional intimacy where two people share their feelings with each other. Or when one empathizes with the feelings of the other person to understand their emo-tional side. A fourth form of intimacy is sexual intimacy. This form of intimacy includes a broad range of feeling and sharing and is much more than sexual intercourse. Healthy intimacy is based on trust, vul-nerability, and pure intent without harm or manipulation. What works against it: using sex to manipulate someone; or vulgarity or improper code of conduct, including provocative clothing or lack of clothing.

To Deepen Intimacy

1. Be open to honest communication

and contact with one another even if the contact is not in person but is by phone or email

2. The company of one another is

sought even when you both have a wide selection of other individuals or friends to choose. There is no jealousy.

3. A sixth sense develops with which

you can communicate at a non-verbal level

4. A sense of humor or sense of play

and casualness develops in which you enjoy “give and take” and are relaxed in each other’s company. Secure the friendship by respecting pri-vacy. Never judge or be critical!

I adore a friend who lives half way across the country. We visit less than my friends here in KC. When we do visit via email or phone every word is precious. The love we feel for one another is inval-uable. No words explain this. You know. It’s the feeling.

S leep is one of the great mysteries of life. Like

gravity, we still don’t understand exactly why we sleep, although we are learning more

about it every day. Good sleep is one of the cornerstones of good health. How many hours do you need to sleep to be optimally well? If you are a giraffe, it is 2 hours in 24 hours, if you are a Koala bear, you need 22 hours in 24 hours. As a human being, experts tend to agree that you probably need 7 to 9 hours of sleep. Too much or too little can have adverse effects on your health. Sleep offers rebuilding of tissues and maintenance of a healthy me-tabolism; sleep deprivation im-pacts levels of the major hormones — insulin, adrenaline and cortisol. In April of 2006, the Institute of Medicine issued a report that con-firmed links between sleep depri-vation and increased risks for high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, memory loss, depression, heart attack, stroke and immune dys-function. The largest study of sleep dura-tion and mortality followed one million people for six years. Those who slept 7 hours had the highest survival rate, and those who slept less than 4.5 hours had the worst. Nine hours of sleep or more each night was also associated with a higher mortality risk. In general, a good night’s sleep seems to be as important to good health as a nu-tritious diet and regular exercise. Roughly 40 percent of Ameri-cans get fewer than seven hours of sleep on weekdays, and 71 percent get fewer than eight hours of sleep. The main causes for lack of sleep are: long work hours, long com-mutes to work, excessive television and computers.

If you are getting enough sleep, you will feel well-rested and able to wake up in the morning with no problem. But if you are fatigued in the morning, nodding off or yawn-ing throughout the day, and just want to go back to bed when your alarm clock goes off — your sleep schedule needs some tweaking. Suggestions to improve your sleep are as follows: sleep in com-plete darkness, no television right before bed, keep the temperature no higher than 70 degrees, eat a protein snack several hours before bed, move clocks away from your bed, reserve your bed for sleeping and establish a bed routine. Also helpful can be avoiding caffeine and alcohol, exercising regularly and meditating regularly. If you find no answer to your sleep issue, get checked out by a holistic physician for food sensitiv-ities, adrenal stress, female or male hormone imbalances and/or neu-rotransmitter excesses or deficien-cies. I have been able to help many patients with sleep disorders using these simple techniques or more complex testing. These tests are done through urine, saliva or blood. Let me know if you would like assistance on your journey to optimal wellness.

W hen winter gets frosty, it’s porridge time. Howev-

er, starting the day with a high carbohydrate meal is an invitation to carb crav-ings as blood sugar spikes and falls. Starting the day with a higher protein and good quality fat meal, such as these nut and seed based porridges, prevents this vicious cycle. Goji Pecan Porridge 2 cups pecans, soaked 2 hours 1/4 cup dried goji berries, soaked 2 hours in one cup water 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 2 tsp vanilla extract 1/4 tsp sea salt 1 TBSP flax seed, ground 1 TBSP hemp seed, ground 1 TBSP coconut oil Drain the pecans. Process the first five ingredients and the goji soaking water in an S-blade food proces-sor until chunky. To serve, gently warm 1/2 cup of pecan mixture and coconut oil over medium low heat. Remove from heat and stir in ground flax and hemp seed. Serve as is or with warm nut or seed milk. Nutty Granola 2 cups almonds, soaked 8 hours 1 cup raw pumpkin seeds, soaked 2 hours 1 cup sunflower seeds,

soaked 2 hours 2 granny smith apples, cored and cut into small chunks 1 TBSP ground cinnamon 1 tsp sea salt 1 TBSP flax seed, ground 1 TBSP hemp seed, ground 1 TBSP coconut oil Process almonds in an S-blade food processor until chunky and pour into a mixing bowl. Process pumpkin and sunflower seeds until chunky and combine with the almonds. Process the apples using the fine shredder blade and combine with the nut and seed mixture. Add cinna-mon and salt and mix well. Spread mixture on a dehy-drator tray with a Teflex sheet. Dehydrate at 145 degrees for 3 hours then reduce to 115 degrees for ten hours or until granola-like moisture level is achieved. Alternately, spread mixture onto a cookie sheet and bake on the warm or lowest oven setting for 3 to 6 hours un-til granola-like moisture level is obtained. Stores in a glass jar for 1 - 3 months. To serve, place ground flax and hemp seeds and coco-nut oil into a bowl. Add 1/2 cup granola. Top with warm nut or seed milk and stir.

EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING 10 February 2014

I ’ve thought so much about

the surprises inherent in

growing older. As I jour-

neyed with my mom

through her Alzheimer’s, I was

constantly amazed at how much I

still wanted her love and every so

often I discovered how much she

loved me. Perhaps you’ll identify

with this excerpt from my book,

Love in the Land of Dementia:

FindingHopeintheCaregiver’sJourney.

One afternoon, while my mother is walking down

the left hand side of the corridor in the Alzheimer’s unit,

tapping one hand on the handrail, and pressing the other

palm on her forehead, she sees a baby-doll lying on the

#loor. Mom’s adult diaper rustles as she bends down,

picks up the baby, smoothes its curly hair and carries it

with her to the dining room. There she settles in a chair

and rocks the baby, talking and singing to it.

“Your mom’s fallen in love with a baby-doll,” Leiticia,

the nurse aide, says when I come visit. “I’ve never seen

anything quite like it.”

Mom is sitting at the table in the small dining room,

her head bent over, as if she’s fallen asleep on a long jour-

ney. I touch her shoulder once, twice and on the third

time, she straightens, notices me and smiles.

I sit beside her and spread out some photographs I

have brought, pictures of people she used to know and

now, doesn’t. She is staring vacantly at a photo of her

granddaughters when Leiticia brings over the baby doll.

“Here you go Frances,” Leiticia says.

Mom lights up, holds out her arms and begins talk-

ing. “You’re cute. You’re so pretty. You’re a good girl.

You’re a good boy.”

I look on in amazement. I haven’t seen Mom so ani-

mated in weeks. Yet I feel a momentary pang—I had

yearned to be the one who jolted her into vivacity. I

watch her carefully. Was this what it was like when I was

little? Did Mom’s face grow bright and happy and did she

sit around and say sweet nonsense to me?

“Do you want to come into the rodum-godum?”

Mom asks the baby. She is talking in the high-pitched

singsong voice she used to reserve for little children. I

realize I have never seen my mother holding a baby doll.

“You are such a good baby. I love you — yes sir!”

Mom’s words spill out. Then she looks at me as if I’ve

suddenly come into the room.

“I like your out#it,” she says. “That’s a good out#it.”

Mom takes one of the photographs I brought and

shows it to the baby.

“Do you know who that is?” she asks, sounding much

like I did a year or so ago, when I believed that seeing her

family’s pictures over and over again would help restore

Mom’s memory.

I listen as Mom continues her conversation with the

baby.

Maybe the ease of being with someone who doesn’t

care if she completes a sentence, who doesn’t care if

words are missing – maybe that freedom lets her speech

#low. When Mom starts a sentence with me, I lean for-

ward, hopeful that I can understand her thought. Some-

times the sentence is normal as Sunday lunch and many

more times, the sentence gets stopped by the secret po-

lice, held up, searched, put in detention.

“I think Mom needs her own baby doll,” I mention to

Leiticia as I leave.

“That doll does get her juices going, that’s for sure,”

Leiticia says.

The last time I looked for dolls, my daughter, Sarah

was seven-years-old and in need of a Barbie. Buying my

mother a baby doll seems like a life moment.

At the toy store, the baby dolls are all full of activi-

ties. One laughs when you press her belly. One has a mu-

sical bottle. Another takes your picture with a camera or

sings to you in Spanish. One baby knows four cheers. Not

one of them is large enough, quiet enough, baby-like

enough.

I wonder if my mother had to search when she

bought me my favorite doll, a holiday present for my

sixth birthday. My friends all got dolls that talked or

moved. My doll Sally just listened. Sally had a calm pres-

ence that I adored all during my doll playing years. I nev-

er really took to any other dolls—even the talking doll

that appeared the next birthday. She was too glamorous,

too sophisticated for me.

I want to #ind a doll for my mother like she found for

me, so many years ago. A doll without skills or frills, who

#its into your arms and just listens.

I search the aisles for a quiet doll without too many

accomplishments. Finally I #ind a soft, rosy-cheeked baby,

a good size to cradle, who boasts only an open mouth for

a paci#ier or bottle.

“Some little girl is going to really enjoy this doll,” the

cashier says as I pay.

I smile as I envision that 87-year-old little girl who is

my mother.

Back in the car, I feel a #lutter of nervousness, like I

felt as a kid when I bought my mom presents. Will she

like it? Will her face light up -- or will she just ignore it?

Mom sits in a chair in the TV room, eating strawber-

ry ice cream out of a round cardboard container. I know

better than to compete with ice cream, so I wait until she

has eaten the last smidgen.

Then I sit beside Mom and put my hand on her

shoulder. She looks at me, her eyes vacant and lost.

“Hi Mom,” I say. She stares at me and then she sees

the baby doll.

“You’re here,” she says, her eyes widening. “My little

girl is here."

She holds out her arms and I hand her the baby.

“Bo bo bupie, tootle ootle, oopie. I have my little

girl,” she croons.

She smiles at me; she smiles at the doll. Does she

know I’m her real little girl or is she imagining this doll is

her child? At this moment, as I watch my mother come to

life and praise her baby, it simply doesn’t matter.

EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING 11 February 2014

T he natural processes of life

may not be easy or comforta-ble to navigate with loved

ones. As our parents age,

their independence, mental faculties

and physical mobility begin to shift or lessen; and, the ways of relating to

those we love begin to shift and

change as well. Our parents may

grieve the loss of their independence and the loved one’s caregiver may long

for the way it used to be.

"Nothing is secure, but life, transi-

tion, the energizing spirit." Ralph Wal-do Emerson. What really matters dur-

ing the natural aging process for both

those we love and our self, the one

who cares for them? On answering this question, our aging parents can be our

greatest teachers.

A friend of mine (I’ll call him Tom)

cared for his aging father until his fa-ther’s passing. In the early stages of his

father’s dementia, Tom would visit his

father in the assisted living facility and

his father would often say, “It’s time to go home.” Tom, with good intentions,

would reply and try to make his father

understand that he was already home and that there was nowhere to go. Of-

ten in this new way of relating to our

parent’s physical, mental and emotion-

al shifts, we might not know what to say or how we can best support them.

This response from Tom created frus-

tration and confusion for his father,

which led to frustration for Tom as well.

Eventually, Tom began to ask him-

self what really mattered and question

whether or not it was really necessary to correct his father. The aging process

can be an unsettling and uncertain time for both the caregiver and the

aging parent. The attempts to correct

our loved ones ,who may not be com-

prehending life as they used to, only ampli#ies the uncertainly and unset-

tledness.

Instead of resisting his father’s reso-

lution and crushing the idea of going home, Tom began to just go with it. He

connected with his father by meeting

him right where he was in that mo-

ment. Besides, Tom did not know if ‘home’ meant the house he used to live

in prior to his assisted living facility, or

an ethereal home. This shift in Tom

allowed him and his father to connect again and enjoy their time together

laughing and sharing stories. The con-

nection is what mattered to Tom.

What my friend learned from his aging father is that the words are not

what really matters, it’s connecting at

the level that’s now possible between

a caregiver and the aging parent. What really matters is the energy ex-

changed, the love and understanding.

It’s often been said – people won’t re-

member what you said, but they will remember how you made them feel.

Regardless of whether or not our ag-

ing parents’ have their full mental fac-

ulties, they can certainly feel our love, our presence and our care beyond the

words we say.

As Zen teacher and poet John Tar-

rant says, “Attention is the most basic form of love. Through it we bless and

are blessed.”

Anyone who has cared for an aging parent knows the emotional and phys-

ical toll it takes on the caregiver. It’s

vitally important as a caregiver to at-

tend and care for ourselves as well. As the caregiver, we attend to many (if

not all) of our parents’ needs. We give

our attention and love, handle hous-

ing, #inancial and legal matters, which can consume a great deal of time, as

well as drain our physical and emo-

tional energy. It’s crucial we give our-

selves the necessary time and atten-tion for self care and renewal. The air-

line industry has this one mastered. If

the oxygen masks drop down due to

low cabin pressure, we are asked to

put our mask on #irst, so we can better help those unable to help them self. It’s

a great message, not only for navi-

gating in the air — but for navigating

life. Our aging parents can be a real gift

in our life, teaching us to be fully pre-

sent and in the moment of Now, show-ing us how to let go of the old ways of

relating to and spending time with our

parents.

We can learn so much about living when we are with our aging loved

ones Embrace the gift, honor your

needs and love fully each precious

moment spent with those you love. They will love you for it!

EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING 12 February 2014

Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) Your body is extremely sensitive, and so it your psyche. Meditate on what you eat, drink, or otherwise ingest. Make a list of what interferes with your health and happiness. Commit to let go of one of these foods (or soda, alcohol, cigarettes). Journal about what it could be an emotional substitute for. Also medi-tate on negative patterns of thought that drag you down, or even people or activities. Have the courage to release these from your life to heal your mind and soul!

Aries (March 21 – April 19) I know you have a hard time with meditation, but Mercury is retro-grade and is calling you to go within. Spend time breathing . . . or maybe analyzing your dreams. Get creative with ways to connect with your soul and intuition. On the job front, breakthroughs can happen where you’re earning more money . . . or someone can come into your work life that you really click with. Com-bine inner guidance with work for even greater success!

Taurus (April 20 – May 20) Do you have friends on the spiritual path? If not, seek some out. Join a yoga studio, or a meditation group. Maybe shift your schedule so you’re not just doing the same old things with the same old people. (Taurus gets into a rut . . . but it ok to let go

of patterns and change!) For a clos-er sense of spiritual connection, meditate on gratitude. You might even experiment with laughter yo-ga . . . yes – it’s a real style!

Gemini (May 21 – June 20) Please meditate and release old re-sentments and fears regarding mon-ey! The Universe is trying to pave the way for new avenues of prosperi-ty, but you must clear out thought patterns and beliefs that limit your capacity to receive! On another level, also let go of negativity around trust, sex and intimacy. Create space in your consciousness to attract fulfill-ment with new partners, or to vastly improve current connections! What you believe is what you live out, so surrender your mind and let healing happen.

Cancer (June 21 – July 22) Relationships are entering a new phase of fulfillment. Deeper bonding is possible because of the work you’ve done to let go of old patterns. Good for you! Whether new or long-standing, try to incorporate a time to meditate together – or do spiritual reading, practice yoga, or something else that connects you on a higher level. Also, keep a notebook by your bed to record your dreams, as much guidance will be there this month!

Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) The more you love your body, the more emotionally centered you will

feel. Meditate on how you can make positive changes with eating, rest, stress reduction. Write a gratitude list to gain respect for your body temple. As you make the changes, you’ll see emotional wounds heal. You’ll even encounter more prosper-ity! Your body will become a conduit of spiritual energies that will benefit you in many ways!

Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) If your relationship isn’t going the way you want it to (or if single and want to be partnered), meditate on how you are being critical of your-self . . . or overly picky about part-ners. Make a list of what your ideal partnership would be like (how you and the other would be) – then talk about with your list with a trusted friend or mentor. Get a reality check and move in a healthier direction. You’ll be amazed at the changes that come quickly!

Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) Mercury is retrograde and wants you to examine your health habits. How do you soothe yourself when stressed? Do you overeat? Do you stay up too late watching dumb tv? Do you seek out emotionally un-healthy sexual relationships for tem-porary comfort? Meditate on better choices and implement those more loving actions. Take more baths. Practice yoga or deep breathing. Spend time with spiritually minded friends. Treat yourself like the awe-some soul that you are!

Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) Please open up about your feelings to those you love! Mercury retro-grade is urging you to look at the reasons you keep your emotions and passions so hidden. It is often a pro-tection against feeling vulnerable and looking weak. Take a risk and praise people more often. Express your truth clearly and watch rela-tionships go to a whole new level of fulfillment and joy! Also, if you have

a pet with a puzzling health issue, meditation could give insights about a simple remedy that corrects the problem!

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) Mercury retrograde is showing you the silly ways you hold yourself back! Imagination can tell you all sorts of negative things and feed your fears -- when your ego is in control of your mind. Through med-itation, your higher self will take control of your imagination – and show you divine possibilities! Evalu-ate each thought and see if it is root-ed in fear or worry – or rooted in intuition and spiritual poise. Also ponder how addictions to substanc-es (alcohol, nicotine, sugar, etc) play a role in limiting your life.

Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) You will have relationship break-throughs as Venus moves direct in your sign. You can start a new rela-tionship, or have huge improve-ments in current partnerships. Med-itation will also bring a more peace-ful relationship with yourself – espe-cially if you deal with body image issues. Support these changes with loving, gentle affirmations about yourself. Refuse negative, critical thinking and get off your own case! Aluna Michaels is a second-generation astrologer and Soul Evolutionist practi-tioner. She also holds a Masters in Spiritual Counsel-ing and has been teaching and con-sulting for more than two decades. Her book “Spiritual Gifts of the 12 Astrological Signs” is now on Ama-zon in Kindle version. Ms. Michaels is available for appointments in her home or by phone. Spiritual Horoscope—by Aluna Michaels

February 2014

Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) Happy birthday Aquarius! Mercury is retrograde, cre-ating healing in self-esteem. Meditate on seeing your strengths so you can accurately assess them, and feel an increase in your value – as a relationship partner, as a worker, and as a soul evolving in the Universe. Al-so ponder your weaknesses, and release them through forgiveness without self-criticism. You’ll open a huge flow of financial and emotional prosperity!
