Good AdVice By Jerry Langton, Vice Commodore

By the time your read this, the Commo-dore’s Ball will be entered into the log as a Kilt Extravaganza! It gave us a chance to “air out” our differences, and for the guys to look into their inner selves, and that’s where it stops.

I would like to thank last years Social Chairs, Carolyn Currier and Terri Sherk for ending 2007 with such a gala event. The deco-rating was time consuming as those that helped will attest, it gave those of us that attended the New Years Eve Party, a feeling of being at a very high-end event. The arrangement and qual-ity of the appetizers kept everyone in a munch-ing mood. Special thanks to Carole Stonich, and her staff, who kept the tables full of delight-ful morsels. The KHYC Staff kept the spirits flowing, and gave a personal touch of class to help ring in the New Year.

The 2008 Racing season is underway. On January 5th the first Race of the Berger series, starting at Marina del Rey to Malibu and back, was off to a slow start and finish. Huckleberry II owned and skippered by Jim Murrell, won First in the New Mum 30 one design (9 boats) and second in Sport Boat A Class. Crewmembers Dennis Fabriola and Ralph Maggio kept the boat moving in sometimes windless conditions. Midnight Run, skippered by John Dean and crew Ski Tarnosky, Don Souther, and Byron Porter, kept the boat moving to finish just before dark to get fifth in his class. A job well done by KHYC Yachts.

Winter Madness was a success sponsored by the Cal 20 Fleet, Sabot Fleet and the Youth Foundation. Fourteen teams competed in the Sabots and Cal 20’s. It looks like the new gen-eration of sailors have the same names as the ones that won those events 20+ years ago: McMartin and Folkman.

Remember what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, but first you have to get there! Let’s put out an effort for the new membership drive. This could start with bringing a guest to the Club and let them experience the friendly atmosphere and great view that we have enjoyed for years.

The Super Bowl will soon also be a mem-ory, but hopefully your team, or pool number, will be a winner. This is just a start for the many social events that will be happening at the Club this year.

Keep your calendars open for Sunday, May 18; it’s a day of activities at the Club called Boat-ing Safety/Sea Fair. It will consist of Fleet Activi-ties and Coast Guard involvements. Something for everyone to enjoy.

Remember to get a “Guess Who I Am” card from Dinah, so you can provide a description of a secret from your past to see if other Club members can guess your identity.

A View From The Rear By Norie Martin, Rear Commodore This month’s article concerns compliance with the Officer of the Deck policy. When you were interviewed by the membership commit-tee, one of the responsibilities discussed, was to serve as OD when scheduled. This year’s OD chair is Jerry Vellutini and I want to reiter-ate your responsibilities. Each member will be called upon once every 2-3 years to serve one day of a week-end. Jerry will give you plenty of notice and if you are unable to serve, the policy states that “any member unable to serve on the desig-nated date shall arrange for a substitute or negotiate with another member to trade as-signed dates. In no event is the obligation to be simply excused or to be postponed indefinitely. Failure of a member to serve a designated date as Officer of the Deck or make alternate arrangements is viewed as a serious breach of KHYC policy. Such member will be assessed a fine of $100 which will be used to offset the cost of a substitute OD. Refusal to pay such assessment would precipitate a hearing before the Board of Directors.” Serving as Officer of the Deck is a great way to meet new members and welcome guests to our facility. If you have not served in this capacity in the past, Jerry will be happy to give you an orientation and there are guide-lines for responsibilities available to you at the Club. Hospitality starts at the front desk with the OD available to members and guests. I know you will have a wonderful experience as OD and meet your membership obligation when called upon to serve. By the way, lunch is provided. Feel free to contact me if you have questions or comments. S/C Mac McClellan has graciously volun-teered to be the 2008 Cove Captain. He and his wife Joan will continue to work on projects to improve the facility for members and their guests. Thanks to this dynamic duo for their generous donation of time, effort and energy.

It is with profound sadness that the King Harbor Yacht Club announces

the passing of Staff Commodore (1988) and former member,

Terry Ward.

In addition to serving as Commodore, Terry

was a founding member of the KHYC Fishing Fleet and was its first Grand Grouper.

Terry passed away on January 18. He is

survived by his wife Nancy, and their children,

David, Teri, and Pam.

Cal 20 Fleet Racing By Brad Knox, Fleet Captain

On January 12, the Cal 20 Fleet hosted its annual Winter Madness Regatta. Twenty-four sailors sailed a total of 40 races on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the Winter Madness Regatta, it’s a little differ-ent than a typical regatta. Competitors race in both Cal 20s and Sabots. Everyone is grouped into teams of two for the event. Each sailor and his/her partner start out with a "Le Mans" style start from the KHYC guest dock. After a good shove from impartial observers, each team sails its Cal 20 at blazing speeds down the channel, around a mark of the course, and back to the guest dock. Once they’ve safely tied the Cal 20 to the dock (this part is very important, since some of them were sailing my

boat) they each jump in a sabot and team race around the same course. The team with the best total score for both competitors wins the race. Based on the team racing scoring tie-break rules if you finish 1st in the Sabot but your teammate finishes 4th, the other team wins. So part of the challenge of the second leg is doing what you can (permissible by the Racing Rules of Sailing, of course) to help your teammate beat the other team as well! This regatta tests sailors’ skills at handling a high-performance sportboat (okay, fine, it's a Cal 20) as well as an ultra-fast dinghy (so maybe not all that ultra-fast, but fun nonethe-less) in both match racing and team racing formats. Each team participates in three of these races with randomly chosen opponents. At the

end of three rounds, the teams with the best record sail in a tournament format to determine the overall regatta winner. After 36 races, only two teams had perfect records: Brandon & Mark Folkman, and Cailin & Kelly McMartin. These two teams would sail a final to determine the overall winner of the regatta, but not before the four teams with two wins sailed a semifinal and final to fight for third

place. The battle to reach the third place finals was tight, but in the end the lighter winds

gave the juniors an advantage in the Sabots that couldn’t be overcome. The third place final was even closer as Adam Aguirre and Casper Poiesz slipped across the finish line just ahead of Cameron Lindquist and Nick Odegard. In the highly-anticipated final, Team McMartin took an early lead over Team Folkman in the Cal 20s. By the time they rounded the mark Team Folkman had pulled even. After sailing as close to the breakwater as any of us closely watching boat owners could stand, Team Folkman stole the lead and then extended it. As they docked the Cal 20s and ran to the Sabots the event certainly lived up to its name. In the end the Sabot prowess of Team McMar-tin proved the difference and Cailin & Kelly McMartin won the 2008 Winter Madness Re-gatta.

Thanks to Brian Lindquist and Bob White for their boats and help pushing them off the dock and catching them as they came flying back in. Also, a hearty thank you to Dyan Bevin and Jim Aurit for providing re-freshments during and hot dogs award-winning chili afterwards. Thanks to Jena Knox and Jim Aurit for providing race committee

duties for the day. And finally thanks to Ron Schmid and Mark Folkman for helping pro-vide Sabots for the day.

Winter Madness was a great way to start off the 2008 sailing season. We hope to see even more of you out for next year’s event.

Sabot Fleet Racing By Nancy Doyle, Fleet Captain

The Winter Madness regatta was held on January 12. The Cal 20 and Sabot fleets host this match racing event with its unique format. Teams of two are formed. Two teams go head-to-head and push off from the guest dock in Cal 20s, race around the mid-channel buoy and back to the dock. After tying up the Cal 20s, each team member then jumps into a waiting sabot and races around another mark and back to the dock. The team with the last place sabot loses that match, so tactics to help your fellow team member avoid that fate were important.

While the wind was very light, ten teams battled it out. The final winners were: Kelly & Cailin McMartin, followed by Mark & Bran-don Folkman. Casper Poiesz and Adam Aguirre took third, followed by Nick Odegard and Cameron Lindquist.

Much appreciation to the Cal 20 fleet and to the King Harbor Youth Foundation for pro-viding their boats.

The next event for the Sabot Fleet is the Frostbite Regatta on February 10. Please be rigged before the Skippers' Meeting at 12:00. Noon. If you need a boat, please arrive a little early and the Youth Foundation will have some available. Bundle-up and come racing!

THANK YOU AND HAVE A GREAT RACING SEASON!

From the Racing Corner By Rudy van Kreuningen, Race Chair Emeritus

Everybody at the Club knows we have racing marks. But why aren’t they named A, B, C, D, E, etc.? In stead they are named T, S, C, A, F, Y, K, H, X, and P, with T-S-C-A-F in line and X-K-P-H in line at a bearing of approxi-mately 233 degrees while Y is just about in line between H and T. The 233 bearing is because our prevailing wind is most of the time out of that general direction thus providing for good weather marks.

Originally, C mark was set in the area of the Hermosa Beach pier, roughly half way between S and A marks, to provide a reaching mark, or a weather mark when the wind was northwest.

When the Cal 20 Fleet joined Twilight Racing, C mark was moved in line with S and A to create a shorter weather leg. In the late 80s, a mirror image of the T-S-C-A-F setup was created with P being the reaching mark of Palos Verdes. This mark was later moved to be in line with K and H , also for the Cal 20 Fleet.

All this does not explain the naming of the marks. Well, there is a good reason. The marks K, H, C, and Y stand for KHYC while their relative location forms a giant Y.

T-S-A-F seen from F mark form the word FAST. So basically the marks spell “KHYC FAST“ and the letters also spell YACHTS.

P mark was originally named so because of Palos Verdes, and X was the long, long time ago a starting mark, where X marked the spot.

I suggest we rename X and P to M and W. Then the marks would spell: “KHYC FAST YACHTS MEN /WOMEN “ and appropriately so. We have some of the best men and women sailors in our Club. Well , so much for a little trivia . Have fun out there,

Congratulations To MARK FOLKMAN

KHYC’s 2007 Yachtsman of the Year!

One Regatta To Live By Kelly McMartin, Results Chair

This comes to you from the newly appointed Results Chairman/Person. How did I get this job you ask? Basically, I bitched that members of our Club that race all over the planet do not get the kudos they should for representing us (KHYC) at these Regattas.

My first results of the year are for the Malibu and Return Race out of Del Rey Yacht Club.. Jim Merrill’s new Mumm/Farr 30 was second in class, BUT was the first Mumm 30 to finish. John Dean’s Midnight Run placed fifth in class. He must have been in cruise mode.

We are also very excited about the high school sailing on the same weekend with the Redondo Seahawks placing First in Silver Fleet with Wes Byrne (skipper) and Brandon Folk-man (crew) and Brian McMartin (skipper) with Hiedi Von (crew). Also, the Mira Costa Mustangs placed Second in the Silver Fleet with Kelsey Rupp and Scott Doyle skippering for them.

When you read this, we will have raced the funniest regatta of the year, the Winter Madness Regatta hosted by the Cal 20 and Sabot Fleets. It was Madness with four Cal 20’s and eight Sa-bots racing the same course in teams of two, switching boats from Cal 20’s to Sabots. Did you know it’s a lot easier to get in a Sabot than out? My knees are killing me.

The results are as follows: Fourth Place, Nick Odegard and Cameron Lundquist; Third Place, Casper Poiesz and Adam Aguirre (rookies on the race team); Second Place, Brandon & Mark Folkman (not happy); and First Place, Cailin & Kelly McMartin (it was all Cailin).

Please send all your results to [email protected] or call me at home.

First Mates By Lyla Knudsen, Fleet Scribe

The first mates installation lunch was held on January 9 organized by Carol Stonich and her committee and catered by Liza’s Bon Ap-petite. The food was amazing, especially the English truffle dessert!

Commodore Jeannine Thompson opened the event by recognizing the impor-tance of First Mates to the Club and introduc-ing “First Husband” Glen. Skipper Nancy Taugner recognized her executive committee and coordinators with yellow roses and also made a donation in their name to the King

Harbor Youth Foundation. A gift was pre-sented to Dinah to thank her for her help through the year.

Gail Barrette gave a detailed treasurers report for 2007. The first mates have donated $2,288 toward cancer research, the defibulator, KHYF, holiday decorations, employee bonuses and new dock cart for the Club. Congratula-tions and thank you for your generosity!

Rear Commodore Norie Martin pre-sented the 2007 GAL award to Fay “Fanzie” Owen for her outstanding initiative and support over the years. Norie also recognized past GAL recipients.

Nancy introduced 2008 Skipper Toni Perpall who was presented with recycled

(dead) flowers by her husband, Bob, because she is a recycled skipper, she served 10 years ago. Everyone got a good laugh out of the joke as he produced a beautiful bouquet to congratulate her.

Toni’s theme for 2008 will be “sustainability” which according to Webster means sustain life. She hopes everyone will eat well, exercise and laugh a lot.

Bumpy Smith presented Nancy with a gift and First Mates flag, thanking her for her contribution in 2007. The 50/50 drawing was won by Ann Lee.

The First Mates meet for lunch the first Wednesday of each month. Hope to see you on February 6.

Fishing Fleet By Smitty, Fleet Scribe Joe Farlo of KHYC is now one of the elite who have successfully speared a tuna while free diving. Check out the photo (below) of Joe holding his 102 pound Yellow Fin. In early December, Joe took a trip to Puerto Vallarta then out to El Banco 25 miles

out from Punta Mita and 50 from PV. Joe tells stories of many dives in the open deep blue to 60 feet holding his breath and waiting for the high speed fish to go by. From my experience you may make hundreds of these dives over days and days on the tuna grounds and never see one. Joe’s patience and stamina paid off big time on December 6 when he made the shot. The fish towed him around for 30 minutes adding to the excitement before he put it on the boat. Congrats Joe, now it’s time to join the Fishing Fleet and teach some of the old dogs some new tricks! The San Quintin trip coming up March 6-9 promises to be tons of fun. Usually we run into bad weather, floods, road hazards and numerous difficulties. This year we have all of that to worry about and also possible bandits that have been hammering the tour ists travel ing in Northern Baja. People have had there vehicles taken at gun point numerous times in the last 6 months. Caravans down the peninsula will give us the most protec-tion. So if you want to catch limits of fish and help us stock up for the fish tacos on Opening Day make your reservations early. My mind is swim-ming in memories of Baja… tequila, ice cold cerveza, fish tacos, hot sauce strong enough to kill scorpions, fishing rods all bent over the rail and jack pot winnings for the biggest yellowtail of the day! Can’t wait. Better make reservations now. The 2nd Annual King Harbor Yacht Club Fishing Fleet “All Species Tournament” is un-derway. Connie Unmacht was the big winner last year with her 50 pound Dodo. You must measure, weigh and photograph your catch to

qualify. Remember catch and release if you don’t eat it. Plan to submit a winner for the Tour-nament while in San Quintin! Yeah baby. More dates to remember: The Luau is back and scheduled for June 14. Dinah will have tickets well in advance. July 20 is the Legend Tuna Trip $680 each; see Jack Beck for de-tails. August 20-25 is the Intrepid Tuna Trip $2,000; see Barry Andersen for details. Our next meeting is on February 4. Come early -Skeeter is cooking. Tight lines.

Cruising Fleet By Lorraine Coller, Fleet Scribe The Cruising Fleet is off to a great start. We held our first meeting January 26. We have a lot of activities planned for 2008. In the interest of boating safety, we will be coordinating with other fleets to have a water safety day. We plan to conduct man-overboard drills and other emergency or unexpected sce-narios where a swift and accurate response is critical. In addition to boating safety, we are plan-ning several cruising excursions. We want to anchor at Little Harbor again. In addition we are planning on a Cruising Fleet Weekend in Au-gust. When we were there last August, it was the first weekend the Island was completely filled that year. In the Fall, we will coordinate another Channel Islands Cruise. In addition, we would like to do another Marina Del Rey Brunch Cruise. We’re thinking of trying Cal Yacht Club

this year—hopefully no weddings the day we pick. At our January meeting we started circulating sing up sheets to gauge the interest and deter-mine the best dates for the above activities. Please sign up soon or contact our Skipper Lee Coller if you are interested in joining us for

these events. On a more personal note, I am proud to report that our Skippers boat, Pascal’s Wager, took “Best Sail Over 35’” in the 2007 Christmas Boat Parade. We were tickled. We had an adorable theme—Goldilocks and the Bears Celebrate Christmas. Plus, two of the cutest little girls braved the cold to wave at spectators from our bow. By the way, if you have any pictures of our boat, #34, we’d love to see them.

We are looking forward to 2008. We meet the 4th Friday of the month. We love to have fun on, and off, the water, and we more than welcome new members. To be added to the Cruising Fleet Mailing list to receive Meeting Agenda, Minutes, and other news send an email to: khyc_cruising_fleet-subscribe@ ya-hoogroups.com.

Remember, as we begin a new year now is the time to designate your primary fleet. We hope you choose us.

Nightwatch Fleet By Dyan Bevan, Fleet Scribe

If you have questions or just want to hook up

with friends give CJ a call at (310) 545-7049. February 5: Pot luck dinner and meeting. February 9: Whale Watch. March 4: Dinner, meeting, and “Radio Etiquette.” CJ and Lynn have arranged a short class on using the radio, espe-cially in emergencies. Please bring a hand-held radio if you have access to one. Power Boat Fleet By Joe Manfredo, Fleet Scribe The first dinner-meeting of 2008 featured an Italian Night pot luck. We were reminded to get those fleet membership dues in to Treasurer John Tootle. For one tenth of a C-note you are rewarded with a year of food, frolic and a chance to fend off s/c Dick Farrell at the bar every month. Your feedback indicates that you enjoyed learning a bit more about the background of your Power Boat Fleet officers. You’ve seen brief bios of your current Fleet Captain and Treasurer but not of our new Secretary, Dick Norris. With your indulgence, we will remedy that now. Besides, it is a slow news month. Dick joined KHYC at the behest of your fleet scrivener in 2001. He and his mate of 46 years, Christine, are seen at most club activities and have a long history of sailing experience. He is a recently retired engineer. Christine is a nurse for special needs children. She has an extraordinary gift as an “intuitive advisor,” according to those close to her. Ask her what that means. They have two sons, Jon, who played football for the New England Patriots and Chicago Bears and is cur-rently Head Football Coach in Louisiana, and Greg, who worked for the Red Sox baseball team and now does sports marketing in Boston. Dick’s birth site (marginally similar to Lincoln’s log cabin) was in a small Welsh village pub owned by his American grandmother, which explains his life long interest in pubs and beer, both consuming and producing it himself. In his college days, in Wales, he founded the now famous Taff-Tiki River Race winning it using advanced raft engineering and sailing tech-nology. There are now over 100 colleges participating in this event an-nually. This was followed by extensive Sunfish racing and power boat cruising on Long Island Sound. His most infamous sail was during a large Sunfish race on the fourth of July when he claims that he in “inadvertently mooned” the whole Isle of Manhattan while flying the Union Jack! He explains “It takes two hands to race and two hands to pull up wet pants! I made the right choice.” Dick did early research and development for the supersonic Con-corde, the Huey helicopter (the one that makes that familiar “wop-wop” beat of the Vietnam War), and the US Coast Guard Dolphin helicopter (the orange copter you see patrolling our bay). As an “icing specialist,” he became well know for his expertise throughout Europe and parts of Asia. In Paris, he was known as Monsieur “slush” –a rather long story you should have him tell you. He was a technical adviser for helicopters and the Abrams tank during the Persian Gulf War and, in 1995 joined Allied Signal (now Honeywell) working on aircraft and space projects until retirement. A former Rugby and current soccer player Dick founded a soccer social club in Connecticut which continues today after 40 years. He still plays in an “old Guys” soccer league, twice a week, loves jogging, bik-ing and ocean swimming. As he says,” Here in California, life’s a beach.” Join the fleet for the next dinner-meeting, February 26, upper deck cocktails at 1830 hours, pot luck cuisine on the lower deck at 1900 hours and 50/50 drawing shortly thereafter. See you there!

Catalina Fleet By Wendy Doeh , Fleet Scribe

The Catalina Fleet enjoyed a large attendance of over 50 people in January. Steve & Becky Reilly planned the Installation dinner and executed the whole evening. It was a big job, but they had the help of their family, and that made it special. Thanks for the good Mexican food, and the beautiful centerpieces. All who played the "pass-around" game had a chance to win the flowers. As Frank Coll was initiated as the Skipper for 2008, his board was recognized. Paralee Hanson will be the secretary, with Wendy Doeh as her assistant. Dick Reinhardt agreed to be the treasurer. Glass art was presented to Steve & Becky Reilly to thank them for all their hard work for the last two years. Frank talked about the plans for the coming year, including lots of on-the-water activities.
