Sermon Mary of Magdela—Witness to Resurrection Rev. Jamie Armstrong This month, we have been looking at the stories of women of faith – biblical stories from the Old and New Testaments, and stories of women of faith a little closer to our time. We looked at a poor widow, at the end of the line for herself and her son, who in spite of her poverty, steps out in faith and does a heroic thing caring for the prophet Elijah. We looked at the prophet Deborah and considered the role of strong women. And last week ,we looked at women connected to Paul’s ministry, particularly Priscilla, who along with her husband was a first century missionary and church planter. Today, in the last week of this series, we are going to look at women in the time of Jesus.

Jesus had a special interest in people that others seldom saw (particularly the religious leaders of his day). In the Middle Eastern culture of his day, women were rarely noticed. But there are a number of stories told about his encounters with women.

In John 4, the story is told of Jesus meeting a woman at a well in Samaria.

In John 8, Jesus sees a woman who has been caught in the act of adultery, about to be stoned to death.

In Luke 7, Jesus is having supper at the home of Simon the Pharisee, when a woman enters the room, not just any woman, but the town prostitute.

Of all the women Jesus encountered in his ministry, and there were a lot, there was a group of women who followed Jesus from town to town in the early days of his ministry. Three of them are mentioned by name, Mary of Magdala, who was set free from seven demons, Joanna, whose husband is a steward in Herod’s court, and Susanna. These are the same women Luke will tell us who knelt with Jesus’ mother at the foot of the cross, as Jesus hangs there, the life flowing from him. They follow Joseph of Arimathaea as he takes the body to an unused tomb and watch as the stone is set in front of the tomb.
