I sat down to compile Current's 2012 Summer Camp Guide brimming with my own fond camp memories. My parents sent me to a rather eclectic selection: Respect for Law Camp, where we learned about law enforcement and did push-ups; church camp, where I learned to rock climb and did push-ups; LEGO Robotics camp, where we constructd elaborate animatronic scenes of legos and laughed at all the push-ups the other campers around us were doing.

After several hours, and depleting all nearby sources of caffeine, I realized that, despite the size of my own selection of camps as a kid, today's prospective camp-ers' options have bloomed exponentially.

And so, what you have in your hands is an appetizer, of sorts – a taste of what's available, and a guide of where to look for more. Each listing will be followed by a site offering more information and a plethora of other camps to choose from. Our complete listing of camps will also be available online at www.youarecurrent.com and through each of our community newspapers' Web sites. If you don't see your camp listed here, let us know and we'll add you to our list. And, as always, thanks for reading.

Science & Nature

By Robert HerringtonFrom a first year Scout fresh from Webelos

to an 18-year-old Eagle Scout, when I was younger, summers revolved around Boy Scout Camp. I can remember the jitters of being a first time camper – getting lost on trails, living off the candy at the trading post since the camp food was inedible and the eventual bout of home sickness. But as I matured and grew older, so did my confidence. That’s the great thing about camp experiences – meeting new people, learning new skills and gaining new experiences. What I remember most is my growth. I might have been shy that first year, but I soon opened up and met a lot of good people. I went from asking older Scouts

for help to dispensing advice. Success was transformed from the number of merit badges I earned to watching younger Scouts achieve theirs because of my assistance. Some skills I learned will stay with me forever; others prob-ably didn’t last longer than the stay at camp (like basket weaving). But I’ll always remember the camp bonfires, friendships, silly songs and of course, the s’mores.

Summer Art CampsWe Teach Everyone To Draw

Summers spent in 'wild' OntarioCOMMENTARY By Steve Greenberg

As a youth, my parents gave me the opportunity, really a gift, to go to “away camp.” Ultimately, I spent parts of nine summers in the “wilds” of central Ontario, Canada, where I was a camper and later leader of the water ski instructional staff.

First on Maple Lake, near Parry Sound, and later on Fox Lake, near Huntsville, Camp Winnebagoe was my home away from home. It was, at first, a semi-daunting new frontier for a fresh-faced kid from Columbus, Ohio. That lasted until the second morning, when we trudged to the dining hall and learned – YES! – the day was declared a “waterfront day.” That meant the temperature was rising to a “wicked” and unseasonable (for mid-June) 85 F. There would be no horseback riding, no archery, no rifle-range action and no tennis, basketball, softball, volleyball, drama, arts and crafts or any of the other “landlubber” activities. This day was made for swimming, canoeing, sailing and water skiing. This was ME!

What did camp mean to me? First and foremost, lifelong friendships. It also meant fending for yourself on some fronts, becom-ing a leader on others and having more fun than any of us reasonably should have been

allowed. It truly was a struggle to have to pack up and return home after eight weeks – and my home life was terrific!

I could never begin to repay my parents for the wonderful memories, experiences and the maturation that came with such a gift. I learned to really trust myself – and others – especially on an eight-day sailing trip from Parry Sound into Georgian Bay, up around

Franklin Island and back down the bay. I was the skipper of a 14.6-foot Albacore, and I had two fellow campers and a load of gear with me.

Four boats followed the two counselors’ lead boat through swells and the wakes of tankers heading out for Lake Huron. We stopped at remote islands, pitched tents, cooked on fires and did what bears do in the woods. Primitive stuff for kids, yes, but worth its weight in gold.

I tried to send my daughters to away camp, but neither took the bait. I can’t imagine why, if there is an opportunity like this, any kid wouldn’t give it a try. It was THAT good for and to me. I recall it fondly, and very much miss it to this day.
