Assisted Living & Memory Care Communities

Offer help with non-medical aspects of daily activities in an atmosphere of separate, pri-

vate living units. In addition to providing meals, transportation for medical appoint-ments, activities and pleasure trips, assist-ed living may supply: linens and personal laundry service, assistance with dressing and bathing, reminder regarding medica-tion, and assistance with eating, transfer-ring to and from a wheelchair, toileting, etc. The best candidate for assisted living is someone who needs help with daily ac-tivities, but doesn’t need ‘round the clock’ skilled nursing care. The ideal facility pro-vides services and personal assistance in a group setting that helps its resident’s lead active, healthy lives. In many cases, as-sisted living communities offer extensive services for early stage Alzheimer’s disease patients. Private pay rates vary depending on care and services needed. A physician’s approval is required for admission.

Alzheimer’s and Memory Care Communi-ties Alzheimer’s is a progressive, degenera-tive disease that attacks the brain, result-ing in impaired memory, thinking and behavior. It is only one of several forms of dementia. Alzheimer’s care communi-ties are special units or free-standing com-munities designed to sensitively care for those with Alzheimer’s or memory related disorders. These communities offer safe and secure residential care for those who need 24-hour assistance. Other senior liv-ing environments may be appropriate for residents in early, or even mid stages of the disease. However, unless they have a spe-cialized dementia unit, transfer from an-other facility will be required as the disease progresses. A family’s private resources or long- term care insurance generally funds Alzheimer’s care communities.

Person - Centered Care

Person-Centered Care (PCC) is not new…but it is gathering a great amount of attention and momen-tum lately. It has become a dominant model in the direction of senior care…and it takes a total commitment from the community administrator and the entire line staff to make PCC work.

First, management must believe in the PCC model. Strong leadership is es-sential to effectively implementing the PCC model since operational changes typically generate resistance and effec-tive leadership addresses the fear of the unknown. PCC is a philosophy that truly places the resident in the center of the care process. Routines, sched-ules and tasks become secondary to the needs and desires of the resident.

Leadership requires that all residents and families are involved with design-ing, customizing and implementing PCC through active participation in one-on-one discussions, resident council meetings and family focus groups. Residents provide informa-tion concerning care issues such as when they wish to get up and what they wish to eat. Families provide details on likes and dislikes, to past careers and hobbies to create a more unique environment and experience. An adaptive and flexible organization versus a tightly managed system be-comes the major focus.

In addition, management may take caregivers and assign them to a specific part of the community to provide con-sistent assignments. The staff needs to be treated as a priority since the way an organization treats its staff reflects on how the staff will treat the residents. They may endorse natural waking and retiring, liberalized diets, spontaneous activities…just a few ideas that com-munities can introduce into the PC model.

Finally, a major component of Person-Centered Care is that the employees must feel person-centered care inter-nally...in their hearts. This is not an “end all to end all” but an ongoing process in which mistakes will happen and modifications are made in order to improve not only the quality of care…but the quality of being. These relationships that develop between residents and staff are not only the heart of senior care but they are what make the difference.

Health

Simple TipS for GeTTiNG fiT iN The New YeArby Laura Garrett, RD

(NAPS) - For many, controlling their weight starts with getting control of im-pulse eating. Often, in order to change behaviors, people must first acknowledge the patterns of behavior that lead them to eat impulsively. It Starts With a ListOne of the biggest culprits is going to the grocery store without a list. Supermar-kets set up their aisles for impulse buying and quick hunger fixes. Breaking the behavior chain that leads to bad decisions often starts with changing rou-tines. For example:• Eat a piece of fruit be-fore shopping.• Create a shopping list template—keep copies in the car and add additional items as needed.• Stick to the shopping list.• Use coupons only for items on the list.Learn How to LunchWorkday lunches can be another oppor-tunity for impulse eating to take hold. If you’re one of those workers who waits until 11:30 (after hunger has already set in) to decide where to go out for lunch or what to order in, you may find yourself often resorting to high-fat, high-calorie options like fast food. Here are some sug-gestions to make better choices:• Have fruit at 10 a.m. • Pack a brown-bag lunch the night be-fore. This will also save money.• Pack or purchase lunches on sliced bread. Rolls can have twice the calories of

sliced bread.• Salads are great, but measure the salad dressing or use vinegar.Make Mealtime MeaningfulSometimes, simple things can make a dif-ference at mealtime. For instance:• Choose carbohydrates that are low on the glycemic scale, such as fruits, veggies and whole grains.

• Take a supplement containing a white bean extract, Phase 2 Carb Controller, found in Na-trol’s Carb Intercept, be-fore eating a carb-rich meal.• Count to 10 before grabbing something to eat.• Make the slogan “The kitchen closes at 9 p.m.” a mind-set.

Today Is a Good Day to BeginMaking positive behavior changes to avoid impulse eating is an essential factor in health and weight management. Start today by becoming aware of those behav-iors that lead you astray from your weight management goals. For more information about health and wellness, visit www.livesowell.com.Ms. Garrett is an RD and a certified dia-betes educator.

Breaking the behavioral chain that leads to bad food decisions often starts with changing unconscious behaviors and habits.

Have you ever thought about seeing a chiropractor but decided not to because you had some doubts or concerns? Someone you know may have shared their experiences with seeing a doctor of chiro-practic. Or, maybe you have heard some stories about chiropractors. As a chiropractor, please al-low me to tell you a little about chiropractic care. First, let me as-sure you that chiroprac-tors are not here to replace your family physician or any other specialist that you may need. In fact, I will often confer with your other doctors on a regular basis to insure that you are getting the best care for your needs and that all of your doctors are kept “in the loop” regarding your treatment and condition. Chiropractors are experts at treating the spine and nervous system to ensure that the spine is free of any nerve pressure that can affect the body. Nerve pressure can cause pain, numbness, pins and needles, weakness in the arms and legs, and can also affect your overall health because the nervous system controls and coordinates all of the functions of your body. In my twenty- four years of prac-tice, many patients have told me that their irregular bowel movements have become regular since their lower back pain has gotten better. They also commonly report that the elimination of their neck or back

pain has resulted in increased strength in their arms and legs and that their head-aches have gone away. And, I frequently hear that patients can move their necks more freely, so they drive more safely and with less discomfort. Chiropractic care

will effectively treat whip-lash from car accidents and chronic pain, as well as other injuries. Arthritis and diabetic neuropathy (nerve pain re-sulting from diabetes) have also responded well to chi-ropractic care. This is not to say that chiropractic is a cure to either condition, but treatment of both of

these conditions in my practice has given patients tremendous relief. Chiropractors use many differ-ent treatment techniques which are cus-tomized to the individual patient’s needs and are really quite gentle. Sometimes a chiropractic adjustment, which involves a gentle movement of a specific vertebra of the spine, is all that is required to help a patient. Exercise and physical therapy modalities are used to help certain condi-tions as well. As a chiropractor, I want you to be in the best of health and free of pain. I am always here to help you with any ques-tions or concerns you may have. Please feel free to give me a call any time so I can help you personally, or with the needs of a loved one .

reNAl-frieNdlY recipeS + TipSCreated by Fresenius Medical Care North America (FMCNA)

and Chef Aaron McCargo, Jr.

fresenius medical care and chef mccargo suggest 5 tips for dialysis patients to make a healthy, flavorful diet part of their daily routine:1. Be creative and save a buck: look for recipes that you can turn into a whole new leftover meal (i.e., use left-over beef tacos to make a quesadilla, stew or a lettuce wrap).2. Mix it up: eat a wide variety of ap-proved foods to keep your diet excit-ing.3. Use spice, not salt: leave out salty ingredients, and add fresh or dried herbs and spices to build more bold flavors.4. Skip the gadgets: embrace one-pot cooking and limit your utensils to save time on cleaning dishes. 5. Ask an expert: work with a dietitian to develop a meal plan that’s right for you and your diet – complete with healthy foods you enjoy.

Health

(NAPS) - Anytime of year can be the right time to make sure you are getting enough of the “sunshine vitamin”—vitamin D. Vitamin D not only helps maintain strong bones and calcium levels in the blood, but there is growing evi-dence linking this important nutrient to overall good health. In fact, if you are among the 77 percent of American adults who are vitamin D deficient, research shows you may be at an in-creased risk for rickets, osteoporosis, cardiovascular dis-ease, autoimmune disease and certain types of cancer. To help, here are four tips to help you achieve and maintain healthy vitamin D levels:1. Know your number. A simple blood test ordered by your physician can assess your vitamin D sufficiency level compared to federally recom-mended guidelines. Some tests even help doctors obtain a more accurate, reliable measurement of your total vi-tamin D level, which looks at the two most important forms of vitamin D to humans: D2, which is found in plants, and D3, which is produced in human skin when it’s exposed to sunlight. By knowing your total vitamin D number, you and your physician can develop a plan to help you maintain healthy vitamin D levels.2. Get some sun. Sun exposure plays a crucial role in the daily pro-

duction of vitamin D. However, too much unprotected exposure increases the risk of skin cancer. Research finds that as little as 10 minutes of direct sunlight a day in certain populations can help to prevent deficiencies. 3. Eat right. Regularly eat-ing foods rich in vitamin D such as salmon, canned tuna fish in oil, white mushrooms, carrots, dark leafy greens and fortified brands of milk, juices, and cereal products helps maintain adequate levels.

4. C o n s i d e r supplements. Taking daily vitamin D sup-plements is another way to help maintain adequate amounts. Your doctor can help you determine which supplement type and

amount is right for you.As always, check with your doctor be-fore making any significant changes to your lifestyle or diet. For more information on vita min D, vitamin D deficiency and the impor-tance of measuring total vitamin D levels, visit www. siemens.com/Vita-minD.

Vitamin D not only helps maintain strong bones and calcium levels in the blood, but there is growing evidence linking this nutrient to overall good health.

voluNTeerS: A KeY To curiNGAlzheimer’S diSeASe

(NAPS) - Although more than 5 million people age 65 and older in the U.S. are currently living with Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and while that number is expected to jump to 13.5 million by 2050, there is reason to hope. That’s good news for the almost 15 million more Americans—family members, friends, neighbors and volunteers—currently caring for their loved ones with AD without any real options to help them get better.Alzheimer’s is the only disease in the top 10 causes of death without a way to prevent, cure or even slow the pro-gression of the disease. In fact, between 2000 and 2008, deaths from AD in creased by 66 percent, while deaths from HIV, stroke, heart disease and prostate cancer all declined significantly.Scientists have learned a great deal about potential underlying causes of AD, and advancements in treatments have been ac-complished in recent years. To spur more breakthroughs and speed discoveries, scientists are focusing on early detection through neuroimaging of the brain. “We have to understand Alz heimer’s from its earliest signs in order to treat it effectively,” said Michael Weiner, M.D., principal investigator of the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI). “If we can get a fuller picture of the brain and identify signs of the disease before someone gets ill, we can develop better treatment options, which could slow the progression and one day even prevent or

cure Alzheimer’s.”ADNI, the largest Alzheimer’s study of its kind, is now in its second phase (ADNI 2). Scientists are looking for volunteers ages 55–90 to participate in the study to allow them to continue their research at the pace needed to be successful against the disease. They are seeking healthy in-

dividuals, those with some memory con-cerns and people with diagnosed AD. Participants will not only be contributing to the search for treat-ments and a cure for AD, they will also have the benefit of access to leading medical ex-

perts in the field. In many communities, it is difficult to find someone who knows specifically about Alz heimer’s disease, so clinical trials can be a great way to work with specialists.“We cannot cure what we do not under-stand,” said Dr. Weiner. “But with the help of volunteers across the nation, we’re on the right path and making great strides to end the Alzheimer’s epidemic.” To volunteer or learn more about the study, contact the National Institute on Aging’s Alzheimer’s Disease Education and Referral (ADEAR) Center at (800) 438-4380 or visit www.adni-info.org.

Changing the face of AD is possible, but we can’t find the answers we need without volunteers. Consider being part of the his-toric ADNI study.
