BASIC PLAN OF ATTACK

Some Basic ideas or general schools of thought vs. 33/351 GOOD SPLITS [ESPECIALLY BY OT]

(ATTACK “B” GAP)

2 QUICK HITTING PLAYS (BETWEEN OT)(MAYBE LEAVING A DL UNBLOCKED TO GET TO 2ND LEVEL STACK)

3 QUICK COUNTS (PREVENTS PRE-SNAP MOVEMENT)(MAY ALSO GET DEFENSE TO SHOW STUNT EARLY)

4 THEN COUNTER WITH A LONG COUNT (GET DEFENSE TO SHOW OR GIVE AWAY STUNTS)

5 DOUBLE TE FORMATIONS(FORCES A BALANCED FRONT PLUS THEY MUST DEFEND ALL 8 GAPS AT LOS)

6 BALANCED 1 or 3 RB FORMATIONS [double slot/flanker/wishbone etc…)(FORCES ENTIRE DEFENSE [fronts/secondary] TO BE BALANCED)

7 TRAP or BLOCK STUNTING LB’s BY DESIGN [or leave DL unblocked](TAKE ADVANTAGE OF LB AGGRESSION AND BREAK ONE)

8 INSIDE ZONE/PARTNER BLOCING SCHEMES(IF THIS IS YOUR NORMAL SCHEME)

9 BUBBLE SCREENS AND 3 STEP GAME(FORCES SS/OLB TO STAY WIDE, SHOW STUNTS OR FORCE MAN AND MATCHUP PROBLEMS)

10 MOTION [QUICK/LATE AS POSSIBLE] & UNBLANCED FORMATIONS(ADD EXTRA BLOCKER AT P.O.A.-OUT NUMBER IN SOME FORM & PREVENT ADJUSTMENTS)

11 SHIFT AND USE MOVEMENT(CONFUSE, ADJUST AND MAYBE KEEP THEM IN A BASE LOOK + PERSONNEL MATCHUPS)

12 SCREEN GAME & QUICK SCREENS/WR SCREENS/HB SWINGS(HELP TO OFFSET STUNTS—get ball into perimeter quickly & take SS/OLB out of front)

13 BUNCH LOOKS(TIGHTEN EVERYBODY AND USE SPACE FOR PERIMETER PASS GAME)

14 SPRINT OUT (MOVE THE POCKET PREVENTING EFFECTIVE INSIDE STUNTS)

15 UNBALANCED FORMATIONS(1 MORE BLOCKER—BETTER ANGLES, ADJUSTMENTS MAY ALTER TEAM CONCENTRATION)

16 RUN THE SPREAD [ONLY IF QB CAN BE A VIABLE RUNNER](IT SPREADS OUT THE SS/OLB AND ONLY HAVE 6 IN BOX)

17 BUILD IN AUDIBLE, PLAY CHANGERS or no huddle(FROM ONE SIDE TO THE OTHER/AWAY FROM BAD PLAY/BROTHER-SISTER PLAYS etc…)(PREVENT THEM FROM USING ALL STUNTS BY RUNNING OFFENSE QUICKLY)

18 NEED A FEW UNIVERSAL PLAYS THAT WILL WORK VS ANY SCHEME LOOK (safety blanket)(THIS WAY YOU CAN ADJUST OR HAVE SCHEMES TO HANDLE MOST LOOKS)

Page 3: fastandfuriousfootball.com Attacking the 3-3 stack defense

1. GOOD SPLITS [especially OT]

O S V S O V V V

SINCE THERE WILL VERY SELDOM BE AN DOUBLE TEAMS OR COMBO BLOCKS TIGHTSPLITS PROVIDE LITTLE OR NO ADVANTAGE IN ATTACKING THIS DEFENSE.

FORCE THE GAPS TO BE MORE DIFFICULT TO DEFFEND

GENERAL RULE OF THUMBOG—2’3’ SPLITSOT—4’ SPLITSTE—3’ SPLITS

ATTACK “B” GAP--ICES/TRAPS/WEDGES/DIVES etc…

ICE TRAP

WEDGE DIVE/GIVE

Page 4: fastandfuriousfootball.com Attacking the 3-3 stack defense

2. QUICK HITTING PLAYS--TRAPS/DIVES/WEDGES (again between OT-”B” gap)

COACHING POINT RE: OG blocking M/N and protecting “A” gap--”A” gap penetration must be handled before any scheme or playcan work. In order to do this the OG must take a quick/short 1st step inthe direction of the N in case he is slanting toward “A” gap. (this would usually mean the M is going opposite).--If M disappears then it becomes a combo block with OC --If M doesn’t disappear he jabs N with inside arm (help OC) and works up to M. Worst case scenario is double N and prevent the quickLoss!

M disappears (combo) M still there (work up)

3. QUICKCOUNTS [prevent stem/pre snap movement]

4. COUNTER WITH LONG COUNTS

5. DOUBLE TE FORMATIIONS [balance fronts]

V V VV V V V V

ALL 8 GAPS MUST BE DEFENDED SO THERE IS NO STRONG SIDE AND IF THE DECLARE A STRONG SIDE AND STUNT/SHADE THAT WAYTHEY COULD LEAVE A GAP OPEN!

LB MUST BE ABLE TO READ AND SLOW FLOW TO CUTBACK AS WELL

however they can still tilt the coverage & get an extra defender on the perimeter

6. BALANCED 1 or 3 RB FORMATIONSBY DOING THIS THE DEFENSIVE FRONT AND SECONDARY ARE FORCED TO REMAIN BALANCE

TRAP LB

LEAVE UNBLOCKED (use movement & aggression against him)

BLOCK LB (isolate)

8. Inside zone [partner scheme]THIS IS SOLID SCHEME BUT MUST BE PART OF YOUR REGULAR PACKAGE (DIFFICULT TO TEACH/PERFECT FOR 1 WEEK)

Everybody teaches their system a little different but the principle remains the same—partner schemes which can take care of the stacks

Page 9: fastandfuriousfootball.com Attacking the 3-3 stack defense

9. BUBBLE SCREENS & 3 STEP GAME--KEEP SS/OLB WIDE IF ZONE--FORCE MATCH UPS IF MAN--SHOW STUNT EARLIER

3 DEEP ZONE--SS/OLB must stay wider to stop OUTSIDE FLAT ROUTES

MAN—Get an SS/OLB on a quicker inside = possible mismatch

Quick 3 step may make the coverage and stunt scheme show earlier(makes it easier to read and block) THEY HAVE TO CHEAT TO GET THERE?

O

Page 10: fastandfuriousfootball.com Attacking the 3-3 stack defense

ROUTE EXAMPLES

O

C

OC

O

C

O

If he doesn’t keep width he will have a hard time covering flatAnd a long run to get there

--Lack of width prevents flat coverage--Too much gives the inside route to offense

DITTO: --Again lack of width prevents flat coverage--Too much gives the inside route to offense

WR Blocks most dangerous

Page 11: fastandfuriousfootball.com Attacking the 3-3 stack defense

10. MOTION (quick as possible) & UNBLANCEDPROVIDE AN EXTRA BLOCKER in some form (without an adjustment)

UNBALANCED –extra blocker helps widen corner and block stack lb

MOTION to 2nd RB give FB as extra blocker

MOTION gives FB a lead blocker

QUICK MOTION allows to get to perimeter and not have to block stack (could pull G)

11. SHIFT AND USE MOVEMENTTrying to confuse (who or where to stunt or hesitate), outflank and maybeeven force the defense to stay in their base look. Plus you may also be ableto increase personnel matchups (TE side vs. SE side/strong vs. weak etc…)

SHIFT RB/TE—change strength/possible personnel matchups

TRADE HB/WB (Wing T)—change wing flank on defense/strength

Page 13: fastandfuriousfootball.com Attacking the 3-3 stack defense

12. QUICK SCREENS/WR SCREENS/HB SWINGSVery quick release schemes that can offset stunt game and make big plays whether in man or zone (include the bubble concept as well)

Page 15: fastandfuriousfootball.com Attacking the 3-3 stack defense

14. SPRINT OUTThis allows you to move the pocket to get away from inside stunts and attack perimeter (run/pass) also allowing QB to outside stunts

V V V O O V V V

V V VO O V V V

P-OT-leaves EMOL alone for backs--OL don’t chase defender outsidesink and hinge backside (control gap)

RULES: DO NOT chase a player outside:

PT—step play side leave EMOL alone (unless stack)—hingePGOCBGBT

ALL step play side and hinge –no one crosses youlook backside}

2 RB—widest B must seal/hook EMOL—inside B prevents quick inside rushThen bounces outside for scrape

1 RB—MUST deal with EMOL all by himself

Page 16: fastandfuriousfootball.com Attacking the 3-3 stack defense

15. UNBALANCED FORMATIONSAdd another blocker, increase blocking angles, widen perimeter and makeThem mentally/physical adjust

16. SPREAD OFFENSEIf QB can run effectively you can spread out the defense to run the ball & if theytighten attack with a variety of the pass game (especially moving the pocket)

17. AUDIBLES, PLAY CHANGES or NO HUDDLEHave to be able to get out of a bad play by either changing the play or at least going to opposite side. The No Huddle may prevent them from being able to utilize all their schemes (vanilla down the package)

MAX SCHEME--both RB same side--TE stays--G/TE work backside

REGULAR SCHEME--BIG ON BIG--OG look middle to stack--RB look stack to OLB(G/RB must communicate)
