This bookletprovides you with the nutritional information for the following fast foodrestaurants: Arby's®, Baja Fresh®, Baskin Robbins®, Burger King®, Carl's Jr.®,Dairy Queen®, Denny’s®, Domino's® Pizza, Dunkin Donuts®, Jack-In-The-Box®,Jamba Juice®, Kentucky Fried Chicken®, Krispy Kreme® Donuts, McDonald's®,Panda Express®, Pizza Hut®, Starbuck's®, Subway®, Taco Bell®, and Wendy's®.

The nutrition information was obtained from the individual restaurants.Menu items were analyzed by computer and not by chemical analysis ofthe product. Soft drinks are not listed in each of the fast food restaurants.Speciality drinks like milkshakes, smoothies, and coffees have beenincluded. For more detailed information you may visit the restaurant'sweb site found at the top of each page. A Registered Dietitian or Certified Diabetes Educator can teach you howto interpret this guide so that you can make food choices that best fitinto your meal plan.

Tips for Healthier Eating

• Know Your Meal Plan

Meal plans should be based on the eating habits of the person withdiabetes. It is generally recommended to include a balance ofcarbohydrate, lean protein, and healthy fat with meals. Include plenty ofhigh fiber foods like fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grain breads andcereals, nuts, and seeds. Since carbohydrate foods affect blood glucoselevels more than proteins or fats, they should be spaced out throughoutthe day. The best way to do this is to eat three meals per day with snacks.

For most adult women with diabetes, 2-4 carbohydrate servings (30-60g)per meal and 1-2 carbohydrate servings (15-30g) for snacks arereasonable amounts. For most adult men, 3-5 carbohydrate servings (45-75g) per meal and 1-2 carbohydrate servings (15-30g) for snacks areappropriate. Children, teenagers and athletes need more calories andmay need to eat more carbohydrate. Check with your diabetes educatorfor the proper amount of carbohydrate choices for meals and snacks.

• Be Calorie and Fat Aware

Maintaining a healthy weight is important for optimal health. Balancingwhat you eat with physical activity can help you reach or maintain yourweight goal. Use the chart below to estimate your calorie goal.

Page 3: Fast Food Guide - intranet.chsfl.orgintranet.chsfl.org/CHSI/media/-Media-HR-Benefits... · Introduction to Fast Food Guide Dining Out Eating at fast food restaurants can be challenging

• Fill Up On Fiber

Choose salads, veggies, legumes (beans) and whole grain breads. Bringfruit or raw vegetables from home to add to your meal.

• Reduce Fat, Calories, and Sodium

Limit fried foods, cheese, bacon, pickles, olives, mayonnaise, tartarsauces, sour cream, and “special sauces”. Order sauces, gravy, anddressings on the side and use a small amount. Choose a small order of French fries instead of a large one. A side salad or a serving ofvegetables is a better choice than French fries. Eat fresh vegetables, lightmayonnaise, and reduced calorie dressings whenever possible. A highfat meal may cause your blood glucose to rise 6 to 8 hours after eating.

• Choose Grilled or Baked Chicken or Fish Instead of Beef

Grilled chicken sandwiches or salads are usually the best fast foodchoices. When ordering beef, choose the smallest burger withoutspecial sauces and cheese. Ask for extra lettuce, tomatoes, and onions.

• Control Portions

Consider splitting a meal with a friend or take half home for anothermeal. Avoid super-sizing!

• Speak Up

Don’t be afraid to ask questions to make sure that you are gettingwhat you really want. Ask how a sandwich is prepared or if therestaurant offers a low fat salad dressing selection.

• Exercise More

To help burn additional calories, control blood glucose levels, andprevent weight gain increase physical activity. Try to include 30-60minutes of moderately intense exercise on most days of the week.

• Check Blood Glucose Levels

Checking glucose levels 2-3 hours after your meal can help you evaluate itseffect. Blood glucose targets for most people with diabetes are 90mg/dl-130mg/dl before meals and 180mg/dl or less, two hours after eating. Speakwith your diabetes educator if you are not meeting your glucose targets.

You can work fast food into your diet once in a while and still maintain goodhealth. The basis of a healthy diet is one that is made up of a variety of foodssuch as whole grains, fruits and vegetables, lean meats, low fat dairyproducts, and healthy fats. Choosing foods that are not processed foods andare high in fiber will improve the quality of your diet and keep sodium low.
