Our research led to synthetic human insulin, now used worldwide by millions of people with diabetes, and to the lifesaving cancer drugs Rituxan, Avastin and Herceptin. Our researchers are pioneers in the study of cancer genetics and of cancer survivorship, and our groundbreaking work in bone marrow transplantation has given rise to one

of the largest, most successful programs of its kind.

Yet City of Hope transforms not just treatments, but also patient care. We treat the whole person, not just the illness, by giving each patient and their loved ones the spiritual and emotional support they need. Our compassionate, patient-centered model has been adopted by hospitals nationwide. And our caregivers now train other caregivers around the world.

Were one of the few institutions recognized by the National Cancer Institute as a comprehensive cancer center. City of Hope is also a founding member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, an alliance of 26 top institutions guiding national standards for cancer care. In other words? for more than a century, we have been driven by compassion to save lives and have transformed the practice of medicine in the process. Today, City of Hope stands at a pivotal moment in our history. While we are proud of our accomplishments, we are still not satisfied. We know we must do more, and we are confident that even greater scientific breakthroughs lie just ahead.

City of Hope will continue to shape medical care in profound ways. Our hematology researchers are searching for therapies that harness the bodys own immune system, our solid tumors experts are improving treatment options for patients of all ages, and our diabetes researchers are exploring ways to fundamentally change the face of the disease. Our expertise in nursing and social support is widely respected as well, setting the standard for how patients and their families should be treated and shaping care around the world.

Our current research activities speak to that accelerating progress. These include the worlds first clinical trial using neural stem cells to attack the most aggressive forms of brain cancer. We have identified genetic mutations linked to chemotherapy-related heart disease risk among childhood cancer survivors a discovery that could change treatment and improve the quality of life for young patients. We also are studying unique approaches to fighting HIV, using a combination of gene therapy and hematopoietic cell transplantation to blunt the virus and defeat AIDS-related lymphoma at the same time.

Our scientific excellence is matched by our commitment to the highest quality patient care, and this year, U.S. News & World Report once again recognized City of Hope as one of the nations top hospitals in cancer. Were expanding our ability to change the way cancer care is delivered within the community. By providing care at 14 sites across California, in addition to our Duarte campus, were increasing access to our clinical expertise and uniquely

patient-focused care to a much broader geographical area. At the same time, were working to ensure that our translational research has even greater impact so that we can rapidly deliver more breakthrough treatments to the patients who need them.

But our accomplishments come with a responsibility. That responsibility is to broaden access to the unique model that weve created and, in doing so, change the future for more patients and more families. Fiscal constraints are limiting some institutions ability to break new scientific ground, and increasing cancer rates are creating a growing need for the humanitarian

services that we provide.

We have much to be proud of here at City of Hope. Our physicians, nurses and social workers consistently deliver the best in compassionate, patient-centered care, even as our translational researchers push the boundaries of science in their quest for better treatments. The Spirit of Life Award is presented to individuals who exemplify the ideals and values that have guided City of Hope for nearly a century, and whose professional and humanitarian accomplishments are worthy of celebration.

Recipients of this prestigious award include a broad range of leaders from the world of business, entertainment, science and philanthropy. What connects them is a shared commitment to elevating the human condition and a profound belief in the power of each individual to effect change.

The Spirit of Life, by its very name, represents the intangible qualities that make an individuals lifeworthy of admiration: their generosity, their ability to inspire and their desire to make a difference in the world.

The award is modeled after the original bronze statue that sits atop the fountain at the entrance to City of Hope. Crafted by artist Robert Russin, the statue celebrates the concept of family and reflects the institutions long-standing commitment to holistic care for those affected by cancer and other life-threatening diseases.

City of Hope extends its heartfelt congratulations and gratitude to its Spirit of Life honorees past and present.

Steve Maiman and Tony Litman have been partners for 20 years, manufacturing and distributing womens and

girls sportswear and dresses to major stores. Each have been honored by Cedars-Sinai, as well as donating to

many charities every year. It is their pleasure and privilege to be able to spearhead a fundraising campaign for

City of Hope. Many thanks go out to their families, friends and business associates who plan to support this event and

make it successful. Helping to fund the research in finding a cure for the many different kinds of cancers, as well as
