Executive Director’s Letter

DearFriends

in this land of opportunity, are families sleeping in their

cars or on the streets, working two jobs and still finding

that they cannot make ends meet? As affordable housing

units dwindle in our community, our families are left with

nowhere to turn. Thankfully, you and Family Promise of Greater Orlando are

here to help. Working together, we rescue primarily first-time homeless families

from the streets and provide emergency shelter and basic needs in programs

designed to assist their return to self-sufficiency.

Although we have helped over 117 families in 2018, I know we still

have much work to do. The Orlando Metro area has the dubious

distinction of having the least amount of affordable housing for

extremely low-income households in the country. Too many

families in our community are spending 50% or more of their

income on housing, putting them at risk for homelessness.

Job loss, illness or any other unexpected expense can throw a family

into crisis. Through our Partners in Housing program, we continue to

explore opportunities to provide affordable housing. We recently submitted

a proposal to take ownership of two single family homes in the City of

Orlando which will be used for low income housing.

I know we can do even more, and with your help we can continue to impact

the community in a deep and meaningful way. We could not do it without you,

our loyal donors. You are the life blood of this organization and I and the Board

of Directors are grateful for your support. Thank you for trusting our vision

and mission of ending family homelessness in Central Florida. And, thank you,

as always, for your support.

CHILDREN NOT HAVING THEIR OWN HOME TO SLEEP IS INCONCEIVABLE.

SPOTLIGHT - FAMILY SERVICES MANAGER, LEOTA YOUNGIn her native country, Trinidad & Tobago, Leota Young began caring for family and friends at an early age. As a young woman, she recalls providing overnight shelter and comfort to a neighbor who suffered from repeateddomestic violence at the hands of her abusive husband. Leota not only offered a safehouse, but the guidance and encouragement that her friend needed to escape her situation and abusive husband. Leota believes that it was this experience, among others that helped pave her way into the social services industry.

After almost ten years of working with victims of domestic violence at Harbor House of Central Florida, Leotajoined Family Promise of Greater Orlando in November 2018 as the Family Services Program Manager. Shemanages both the Shelter and Rapid Rehousing programs, as well as the oversight of the Case Managementteam. She brings with her a wealth of experience, impressive credentials, and a fervent desire to help find a solution to overcome the crisis of homelessness in our community.

SPOTLIGHT - BOARD MEMBER, KRISTEN SKINNER In an effort to seek out an opportunity in servant leadership, Kristen Skinner was referred to Family Promise ofGreater Orlando through a community leader and friend. And, after spending just one impactful evening with severalinspiring Shelter program clients, and hearing their personal stories including instances of poverty, trauma and homelessness, Kristen was forever changed and motivated to help advocate for the end to family homelessness.

Over the past two years, Kristen has been an active board member and resilient voice in Central Florida, educatingboth business and community leaders alike about the Family Promise mission and its Housing First model. Shealso spearheaded an initiative to better inform those looking to become involved with Family Promise. For the firsttime ever, a “How to Get Involved” brochure was created and is now used to better direct those people who havebeen inspired and driven to volunteer. It is a small, but mighty tool that was greatly needed and has now been putto wonderful use throughout our community. Kristen looks forward to continuing in her role as Board Secretaryand is dedicated to the continued education and advocation for Family Promise of Greater Orlando.

SPOTLIGHT - VOLUNTEER, ALISON WHITNEY Alison Whitney has been a volunteer for Family Promise of Greater Orlando for nearly 20 years. She fondly remembers a first encounter with one of the program’s Shelter program clients while they were being housed ather congregation, Conway United Methodist Church. It was Halloween night and she was surprised to learn thatthe young children in this particular family had never been trick-or-treating. Alison immediately invited the childreninto the church’s thrift shop to pick out costumes, got them suited up (super-hero style!) and personally accompaniedthe family out for their very first Halloween adventure. She loved sharing in this special moment with the family.

As a retired school teacher, Alison is a natural leader, educator and overall caregiver. She believes that through herrole, she has been given the opportunity to give back, and complete mission work right in her very own backyard. She cherishes her time with the Family Promise clients, even including her own daughter and grandchildren in volunteer opportunities whenever possible. She is hopeful that her volunteerism will inspire future generations to continue to give back and make an impact within their respective communities.

THE EVENT THAT CONTINUES TO FUEL OUR GROWTH!The No Place Like Home annual breakfast fundraiser has become the corner-stone to nondiscretionary funding for Family Promise of Greater Orlando.Over 300 guests attended this event in 2018 and listened to the inspiring storyof our client speaker, Teaonnda, and her journey to find a home of her own.We continue to be thankful to those who realized the importance of our work.Because of our generous supporters and donors, we raised $216,000 in gifts

and pledges.

BURT PARTY FUNDRAISERBoard Member, Kathy Burt, and her husband, Jeff hosted the Chipping Awayat Homeless Families Event in conjunction with the Bay Hill Golf Tournament.Attendees enjoyed food, drinks, a silent auction and a live band. Because of the kindness of the Burts opening their beautiful home, Family Promise

received over $30,000 from the event’s proceeds.

FAMILY HOLIDAY PARTYOver 30 individuals attended our annual family holiday party. Volunteers pro-vided food, fun and festivities. Guests enjoyed an evening with their familieswhile playing games, face painting and a warm meal. In addition, each childreceived a $50 gift card which empowered the parents to shop for

their own children for the holidays.

TEAONNDA entered the Family Promise program feeling

lonely and desperate. She had recently given birth to herfifth child and the chaos in her life just continued to permeate. As part of the Rapid Rehousing Program, Teaonnda and her familywere immediately placed into a home in Winter Garden. They receiveddonated furniture from our loyal supporters. The storm that had oncebeen homelessness, dissipated. They began to settle in. She registeredtheir children for school and found Day Care for the baby. Now the real work would begin...the case management. As part of the program,Teaonnda worked closely with her case manager to learn the vital skillsto help keep her on the road to success. The case manager spoke to herabout budgeting, interviewing skills and how to dress for a job interview.Until this moment, she never realized that this is how people live and operate. She did not come from a home where these topics were discussed nor modeled.

As time progressed, Teaonnda began to envision a life with a plan. She knew how much she needed to save, she understood how to properly prepare for a job interview and she even knew how to dress appropriately to secure employment.

Case management is the glue that holds everything together at FamilyPromise. The case management team works alongside our guests working toward mutually established goals which often times includeshousing, employment and stability. The case management provides thefamilies in our program with the necessary skills to be successful in thecommunity and most of all, gives hope to those who need it the most.
