Where has our summer gone? I normally welcome Fall with open arms. Although, this year, it feels like there just wasn’t enough summer! I am certainly looking forward to sweaters
and fi replaces, but I am still craving one last lakefront weekend with my family. Just one more jump off the dock into the lake!
Nevertheless, Fall is here and it marks the two year anniversary of Family Matters in Milton. In this issue, I celebrate my own family as I introduce them to you. I invite you to read our cover story as we share with you our family values.
As always, I want to send out a huge, heartfelt thank you to all of our advertisers. Thank you for your support and for trusting me to promote your business in our beloved Milton!

You are the caregivers, the caretakers, the mothers, daughters, sisters, friends and colleagues who we all count on to keep
this crazy busy world spinning. FALL FIT WOMENS WEEKEND allows women the perfect place to do all this good work, spend time with friends, and make new ones all the while paying yourself and your soul back for all of the good work that you do! Too often as women, we give so much “OF” ourselves and not “TO” ourselves. I recognized this in my own life as a wife, and working mom to three amazing and very busy children. I realized that other women may have this same need and the fi rst Fall Fit Womens Weekend was born in 2011. I had seen as a coach at Reebok Crossfi t Firepower, that as women got healthy and gave themselves the space to get stronger, other changes started to occur. They started making REAL changes in their life. Positive changes. Changes that really mattered in life. Pretty cool stuff, I thought. I was inspired to give as many women as possible the
opportunity to see they all have the stuff it takes to get what they want out of life.
For 2014, Fall Fit welcomed the incredible Lori Ann McLeod of Oxygen Pilates on our team as Event Co-Director as the event has grown and will welcome over 220 Milton and local women to camp this Sep 19-21, 2014!!!!
At this special event, women get to enjoy a non intimidating, all inclusive fi tness/wellness weekend at a beautiful lakeside camp in Haliburton Ontario full of sweat, laughter, and inspiration. Each year, Fall Fit welcomes experts in over 12 program options including Pilates, Bootcamp, Yoga, Hiking, Art, Crossfi t, Kayaking, Stand Up Paddleboarding, Kettlebell class, High Ropes, Amazing Race, Kickboxing, Nutrition, Cocktails, Meditation, Life Coaching and more! Women get to choose their own adventures, stick to what they love or try something new! Every year, we send these women home with a
As the founder of Fall Fit Womens Weekend, my dream was to allow women the space to get outside their comfort zone, to get back to who they really are, and what they really want out of life. At Fall Fit, we are passionate about preserving one of our most precious resources, all of you women out there!!! All of you!! Yes, even you!!! Because really, Who are you NOT to deserve everything you want out of life?

As the founder of Fall Fit Womens Weekend, my dream was to allow women the

refreshed positive attitude and a desire to get what they want out of life!!
A Fall Fit favorite is the Friday night welcome party complete with a wine and chili bar, raffles, a silent auction, and an incredible keynote speaker that immediately transports us all to the perfect Fall Fit mindset. And the best part? The next generation of women get to benefit from all of this!! 100% of the proceeds from the auction/raffles at all Fall Fit events to to a local charity co-founded by the amazing Liz Coulson of Milton. The Strength Within Girls Group (SWIGG) swiggtalk.com encourages young girls to channel their inner superhero and to share, learn and lead. We have been able to donate thousands of dollars to SWIGG to help SWIGG do this good work. Hence, the motto of Fall Fit Womens Weekend, “strong women ensuring the next generation of strong women.”
And then, a natural progression occurred: as Lori Ann’s daughter and my own daughter grew, we wondered, “How can we instill this Fall Fit feeling
of strength, courage, freedom of expression and desire for a healthy, active lifestyle in our younger girls?” and so...
FALL FIT MIGHTY GIRLS CAMP DAY was born.
The pressure to be perfect, to be something you are not is too huge for this generation. And then we read the statistics: OH MY!
• Only 11% of girls globally would describe themselves as beautiful
• 72% of girls report the pressure to be beautiful is too high
• 60% of girls drop out of all sports/activities by 8th grade
This camp day is specifically designed for girls grade 5-9 and encourages them to stay strong, confident, active, to dream big and to love the body they are in. It is held at a beautiful local camp on Appleby Line and has grown

beyond expectations. There is such a need for this and Lori Ann and I make it our mission to fi ll this need. Just watching the girls last year listen intently to our female Olympians, our inspirational speakers, express themselves creatively, and sweat it out in some incredible fi tness/wellness programs brought tears to our eyes. We realized, “they don’t really know how incredible they are!!! They need to know!!” Camp always includes an Amazing Race where they are challenged individually and as a team.
Fall Fit wants you to know that holding the events at camps in an authentic sleepover camp atmosphere is a deliberate choice. Camp offers that extra bit of magic for this kind of empowerment. Everyone is cool at camp.
Everyone is enough at camp. Everyone has the room to just “BE”, and therefore everyone has the room to grow.
Whether you are 13 or 39, we all deserve the opportunity to grow, so sign up and celebrate at one of this years Fall Fit Events!! www.fallfi twomensweekend.com

Start with a budget. They say that you should spend money yearly maintaining your home. But does that amount change
when you are living in a new construction home vs a 30 yr old property or even a century-old fi xer upper? Logically, yes!
For years, my own personal preference has been towards buying newer homes: home warranties, modern amenities, energy star ratings. Some might say these are cookie cutter homes. But, being a young family this was a very practical choice for us : no roof to replace, no leaking windows or insulation to worry about. Maintenance-free living without the condo fee! But when it came time to sell those homes and move up the property ladder (from townhome to semi, to small detached to larger detached ...) we often discussed what our current home needed to sell it for best profi t.
If we had put hardwood fl oors, stairs and granite countertops in our fi rst starter townhouse, it would have been a waste of our money, at the time. But times are changing; standards have evolved. As prices have gone up, buyers can often afford less in terms of square footage, and so are often more picky when buying that starter home, in terms of fi nishes. They want landscaping, hardwood fl oors, painted walls, even potlights and upgraded kitchens /bathrooms. So, what for us was a $500-take-this-townhouse-and-sell-it budget, would now be estimated at closer to $5000 - and no, I’m not referring to 50 years ago! A lot has changed in the GTA housing market over the past decade.
In fact, you CAN take a medium sized 4 bedroom, 2 car garage house and sell it with builders basic paint, carpet on your fl oors and laminate countertops... You just probably won’t get top
Can you overdo it ... To the point of turning off buyers? Can updates put off potential sales?
Simply put, yes! You need to take stock of the home you have, be realistic & listen to your professional team.

dollar. So, can a little savvy shopping and proper spruce-ups improve your ROI? YES! Approximately 3 to 6 months before you think of your next real estate transaction, talk to a real estate agent. Discuss your plans and fi nd out what’s going on in the market.
If houses are fl ying off the shelves because of low supply and only require some elbow grease to de-clutter and clean, great! But if the market turns and the buyers are now in the power seat, it may be time to roll up your sleeves, do a
backsplash, repaint a hallway or even upgrade to hardwood fl oors or granite counters. But your return on carefully-chosen fi nishes, could be well worth your time and money.
However, if you are advised by a trusted professional not to put in $’s into that reno, because the resale market will NOT pay you back for those granite ceilings – then my advice is: listen! A professional realtor working full time will often see hundreds of homes a month, trust their opinion!

The good news is the skills you need can be learned and practiced in any marriage to keep it strong and happy. Here are some
tips essential for a great relationship.
1. Release the past and not let it defi ne your current relationshipWe have all been in relationships that ended. It is very important to relealize they don’t have to defi ne you or your present relationship. Move on from the past and stay conscious of the fact that your current partner is not the same as your ex. Treat current confl icts fairly and remain in the present.
2. Understand the balance of give and takeEvery solid relationship has a balance of give
and take. We all have a tendency to be a giver or a receiver. It is important to recognize your pattern and make an effort to create a balance.
3. Give each other some spaceIt is vital to have things that you do together as a couple that you both enjoy but it is also important to do things on your own. You both need a break from togetherness. It is ok for you to do something on your own and recharge your batteries.
4. Learn to communicate authenticallyThis is a skill that most of us need to practice especially if we were not given the opportunity to express our needs and feelings as children. To
DO YOU EVER LOOK AT COUPLES AND WONDER
What’s their secret to being so happy? There’s always that couple at a wedding, the grocery store or at the local restaurant that just looks “happier” than the rest of us. They seem to be enjoying each other, laughing a little harder or smiling a little longer. Sometimes you want to ask them “what’s your secret?”

have authentic communication you need to create a safe and loving environment within your relationship. It can be diffi cult to say what you are feeling but it is much better for the relationship than bottling it up.
5. Learn your partner’s love language and use it regularlyTake some time to read the book The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman. Learn and understand your own and your partener’s love language. Use this information to make sure you are both getting your needs met.
6. Five to oneFor every negative moment in your marriage you need to have 5 positive ones. Research shows that stable marriages have fi ve times more positive interactions than negative ones. As that number drops, the marriage is at high risk for divorce. So for every snide comment or negative outburst you need fi ve positive moments to keep the marriage strong and happy.
7. Expect good thingsYou know they say you attract into your life what you expect. If you expect your relationship to fail, then chances are it will. When we believe something over a long period of time, we start to act in ways to prove it. Therefore, always expect the best to happen.
8. Show respect by paying attentionListen to your spouse when he or she talks to you. Mutual respect is vital for a happy marriage. When you give your undivided attention it shows that you respect them and value what they have to say.
9. Maintain a healthy physical relationshipPhysical intimacy needs may
be different for each partner. You should be mindful of each other’s needs and reach compromises that fulfill these needs. Especially after children, it becomes more difficult for a couple to maintain the same level of physical intimacy but you need to make time to keep your physical relationship a priority.
10. Love your partner, your self and othersYou need to love yourself, your partner and others in your life. Spend time together building your relationship, doing things you enjoy together. Also invest in yourself, doing the things you enjoy alone. Spend time with family and friends. Be around others that model stable marriages. Create a support system that you can go to if needed. Surround yourself with love.

20% of Canadians are struggling with mental health diffi culties, for a total of 1.5 million children and 4.5 million adults. 13% of Canadians (3.8 million) are struggling with physical disabilities, and among those over the age of 75 the rate is 43%
The role of caregiver, whether it is of an aging parent, a family member with a physical disability or a child with mental health diffi culties, can at times
be overwhelming. The time, energy and fi nances required to care for a loved one, and the emotions associated with being a caregiver, sometimes lead to caregiver burnout, a state of physical, mental and emotional exhaustion. Exhausted caregivers describe feeling stressed, anxious and depressed, and they report symptoms similar to those seen with depression. For example, they report irritability, loss of interest in activities they used to enjoy, social withdrawal, poor appetite, sleep diffi culties, and feelings of hopelessness. In a state of burnout, a previously positive and loving caregiver may become negative and uncaring. Caregivers also often experience guilt, anger and self-doubt. Strategies to address the feelings associated with caregiver burnout are detailed below.
GUILTWe all want the best for our loved ones, and this can result in caregivers setting high standards for the care of their family members. In setting high standards for the care of their loved one, caregivers may set unrealistic expectations of themselves and may assume exclusive responsibility for the care of their loved one. When caregivers do not meet the high standards they set for themselves, it is not surprising that they then become self-critical. For example, a parent of a suicidal teen might tell herself “I should have checked on my
Caregiver Burnout:
Caring for a Family Member WITH PHYSICAL OR MENTAL HEALTH DIFFICULTIES
daughter more often throughout the night”. A child of an ailing parent might tell himself “I cannot put my mom in a nursing home, I should be able to make it work at home”. Not being able to live up to self-imposed unrealistic expectations, and the resulting belief that they are not doing a good enough job of caregiving, results in feelings of guilt and shame.
In order to reduce feelings of guilt it is important to set realist goals for yourself, accept your own limitations, and allow others to assume some responsibility for the care of your loved one. When you start to feel guilty, ask yourself whether you are being realistic or idealistic.
ANGERMany caregivers become frustrated by a lack of money, resources, and skills to effectively plan, manage, and organize their loved one’s care. They also can become angry that their loved one is suffering. Anger can be directed at their loved one, themselves, other family members, healthcare professionals, and/or a higher power. It is important to understand that anger is a normal human emotion that we experience in response to feeling a lack of control with our situation.
In order to reduce feelings of anger it is important to accept what you cannot change about the current situation, and use the energy associated with anger to change the things you can. Remember that even when you do not have control over the situation or outcomes, you are in control of your own behavior and can choose how you will cope.

SELF-DOUBT Caregivers commonly question whether they are doing the right thing for their loved one, and they may become confused when they are given differing opinions from a variety of sources. Self-doubt can become exacerbated when caregivers judge their caregiving approach based on the response of their loved one, whose symptoms may vary or progressively worsen.
In order to reduce self-doubt, it is important for caregivers to educate themselves about their loved one’s illness and the treatments or care available. Remember that your loved one’s response to your care is based on a multitude of factors, including the illness your loved one is struggling with. Be realistic about your loved ones illness, their symptoms are not a reflection of your caregiving.
SELF-CARE STRATEGIESThe primary strategy to prevent or treat caregiver burnout is self-care. Finding the time for self-care is often a challenge, and even when time is taken, caregivers often feel guilty for not using that time to help their loved one. However, it is important to remember that self-care is necessary to be the best caregiver you are capable of being. Self-care requires making time for breaks, and using that time for fun, socializing and rest. This may require another family
member, caregiver or organization providing you with some respite (e.g. in home care, short stays in nursing homes or group homes). Self-care includes eating well, exercising, getting adequate sleep, and taking care of one’s own medical needs. Seeking support from others is also necessary for self-care. Sharing your feelings with those within your support network (e.g. friends, family, religious community), a counsellor, or another caregiver in a similar situation (e.g. support group) can be a great way to release stress and get helpful advice.

Wires: The wires used have evolved, newer wires are more fl exible and have better memory allowing them to bounce back to their original shape. This results in more predictable tooth movements and wires that can do their job over longer time periods, resulting in fewer appointment visits. No longer is it necessary visit the Orthodontist every month for a tightening, now appointments can be spaced 6-10 weeks apart with the majority of visits every two months.
Brackets: Braces continue to change too. Self-ligating braces have metal doors or clips that retain the wire in its place instead
of traditional elastics aka “colours”. These self-ligating
braces have been proven to reduce plaque levels in the mouth by eliminating the elastic ligatures which trap more debris around the tooth. Better hygiene means less likely to get white spot scarring on the teeth. Metal clips reduce friction on wires allowing faster tooth movement and allow the wire to work for a longer time resulting in less frequent appointment visits too. Braces have become smaller diminishing their discomfort. Esthetically conscience patients can also choose from Porcelain braces which are transparent in addition to white coloured wires, essentially making the braces unperceivable.
Invisalign: Invisalign uses computer generated simulated incremental tooth movements planned by an Orthodontist. Once a plan has been designed a series of proprietary plastic trays are manufactured using the latest technology in CAD/CAM technology. Patients wear each tray for approximately two weeks until the series is complete and a wonderful smile is created. These clear plastic trays are 1 mm thick and once placed in the mouth are practically invisible! In-offi ce laser scanners take virtual impressions of teeth and send data to Invisalign over the internet for virtual planning of cases. This stream lining of information allows same day planning and processing to make trays extremely quickly.
Acceledent: The latest gadget in an Orthodontists “toolbox” is Acceledent. It is a battery operated
device that is connected to a silicone wafer similar to a sports mouth guard. It is held between the teeth hands-free for 20 minutes daily while gentle micropulses are transmitted to the teeth and bone resulting
in accelerated tooth movement. Treatment time can be reduced by 40% and patients
experience less discomfort when using this device.
There are many more advances including 3-D x-rays, robotic assisted pre-bent wires, custom made braces…So, don’t hesitate to speak to a an Orthodontist to see what technological advances can be used to effi ciently create your new beautiful smile!

I cannot even count the amount of times I have been asked when my family is going to be featured on the cover of Family Matters in
Milton. My answer has always been the same, “It’s not about us, it is about the community”. This time around, though, the timing just felt right. This Fall issue marks the two year anniversary of the publication, and this September, my husband Dan and I celebrate our 20 year wedding anniversary. I thought now would be a perfect time to introduce my family to the readers. There was a dilemma though: since my eldest daughter, Jenia is the publication’s photographer, who would photograph all of us together for the cover shot? She quickly made the executive decision and insisted Laurie

Goodman of Laurie Goodman Photography take the shot, as,she has been admiring her work for months now. Jenia follows her on Facebook and is always fascinated by her talent. I have recently fallen in love with Laurie’s Life Messages* movement and was easily convinced that she was the only person who should take the shot!
So, we decided to pile up into the bed of my husband’s pick up truck, with a blanket that was a gift from my late maternal grandmother, and just be our silly selves (at least as silly as we could muster up for this 8am photo shoot!). Along with the great photos, Laurie gave us a blank

piece of paper and asked us for our family’s Life Message. We were a little dumbfounded at fi rst; we looked at each other with a look that said, “we don’t have a message do we”? The only thing my three kids could come up with was, “be good, or else!” I thought, “really? That’s all we have taught them?” Then Laurie asked, “of everything you have taught your children, what would you want them to remember the most?” I wanted to think we had a powerful and profound message that binds our family together, and that our children would live by. I wanted to say, “love yourself” or “respect yourself and love one another unconditionally”. Then Danny Jr., who is my quiet one, shouted “work hard, nap hard!” We all laughed and agreed, “Yeah, that’s it!”
Dan and I both are small business owners. Dan runs a landscape and snow removal company. Our kids have always known him to be up at 5:30 am for work. They are used to him working long hours and coming home only when the job is done. They have been part of too many conversations about coming through with promises that were made to
our clients, and how we were going to work hard to keep those promises. They understand that things don’t come easy and everything has a price. More importantly, when Dad does fi nally come home, and needs rest, he has earned it. Work hard, nap hard! Dad doesn’t spend all of his days working hard, though; he is always making time for fi shing and spending time with us.
I can’t believe it has been 20 years. We have had many trying times that we never thought we would get through, and yet, we have always thrived. Marriage, parenting, running a business together, trying to live a clean and healthy lifestyle, it’s all hard work. Our family is likely no different than
most. We work hard everyday to keep a work/life balance while trying to teach our kids practical and valuable lessons along the way. We work hard at our marriage and try to remember that one day our precious babies will be gone and living lives of their own. We keep in mind that once that happens, once we are left in our empty nest, it will be a little easier if we are still connected and still like each other!
The idea of an empty nest doesn’t seem as far-fetched as it used to seem. As Jenia heads off to her second year of College, and is living away from us for a greater part of the year, it is slowly becoming a reality. Jenia is an aspiring photographer who is working diligently at gaining exposure in our community. She is studying Business Marketing in the hopes that it will lend the skills she will need to market herself as a photographer, and help her hone in on the area of photography she would eventually like to focus on. When she is off school, she works in the landscape business with Dan. She has a love/hate relationship with the work, but it certainly helps her understand that
nothing comes easy. She is a strong willed and confi dent young lady, who is not easily swayed by her peers and she knows who she is and is fi ne with it. We could not be more proud of her!
Jenia’s views on Family: At the end of the day, when nobody else will have your back, they will.
Danny Jr. is going into his fi nal year of high school and he will tell you himself, it feels like he started high school only yesterday. He says he can still remember what the fi rst day of grade 9 smelled like. He is certainly our driven and goal oriented kid. As a 5 year old, he already had a vision for himself; It was so cute to hear him say that when he grows up he wants to be a dog. As a teenager, he has much more realistic goals for his future. He too works in the family business and has an uncanny understanding of how the business

should be run. Who knows, maybe one day, he will be running it, but it is still too early to know! With every spare moment he has, you will fi nd him playing competitive soccer or just playing it with his buddies for fun. Sometimes we think he was born with a soccer ball attached to his feet. If you ask him what his biggest dream is, he might say, “to watch the Leafs win the Stanley Cup!”
Danny’s views on family: They are people who know you really well and they still like you.
Mia, my youngest, is our free spirited ‘hippie chick’, yet she still works hard every day at staying focused and on task. She has her own idea of how her days should go and they usually consist of endless hours of singing and dancing to anyone who will watch. She is a social butterfl y who loves people and thrives on human contact, a little like
her mother! It is too soon to even wonder what she will end up doing for a living, but something tells me it will involve making people smile.
Mia’s views on Family: Stick together and be committed!
These are the people for whom I wake up every day. They are the reason that this publication even exists; they are the ones I strive to make happy and keep healthy. It is for them that I try to stay balanced. This publication is about the importance of family, no matter what your family unit looks like. It’s about the things and the people that matter. I hope you enjoy every issue and I look forward to meeting your families. If you would like to have your family featured and share your family values, I would love to hear from you!
