Surrey Waste Partnership (Surrey County Council working with the 11 district and borough councils in the county) is running Surrey’s own Love Food Hate Waste campaign, which aims to raise awareness of the need to reduce food waste.

The campaign aims to show Surrey families how they could save up to £50 a month on their food shopping bill, by encouraging families to stop and think about the food they buy or cook that ends up in the bin.

Food waste is a significant issue in the county and it’s vital that the amount being generated is reduced. The energy, water and packaging resources used in food production, transportation and storage all go to waste when perfectly good food is thrown away.

Why do we throw away food?• Too much food has been cooked or prepared

(happens with pasta and rice all the time).• Food hasn’t been used in time (fruit and veg

are a typical example because they’ve gone off in the fruit bowl or in the fridge).

• Food hasn’t been eaten before it goes past its use-by date.

Why does food not get eaten in time?• Plans change.• We forget what food we have in the cupboards.• Food is not stored properly. • We don’t know how best to use our leftovers.

Shopping, cooking and eating habits are hard to change, but the good news is that by doing some easy everyday things in the home you can waste less food, which is a benefit to your pocket and the environment too.

Shop smart• Before you do your next big shop, check what

you have left, be creative and try inventing something new with the food you already have.

• Make a shopping list to plan ahead.• Buy your food loose where possible to avoid

buying more than you need.

Store it, don’t waste it • Keep an eye on the ‘best before’ and ‘use by’

dates.• Keep your fridge, freezer and cupboard

stocked with basic food staples so you can use them with leftover vegetables, salad or meat.

• Store food properly – preserve and your food will live extra days, weeks and even months

• Keep the fridge at a cool 1 - 5 degrees and chilled food will stay fresh for longer.

• Freeze food that won’t get eaten in time.

Did you know?• The optimum freezer temperature for preserving

food quality is -18°C.• Fresh food can be frozen at any point up to the use-

by date and remain safe.• There is no time limit to how long food can be safely

frozen for - as long as it is kept at -18°C and remains properly frozen, it will not become unsafe.

Cook less• Weighing and measuring food helps with

achieving perfect portions, removing the guesswork.

• There are many cooking utensils that can help – spaghetti measure, tablespoon, measuring spoon, weighing scales.

• If you do make too much, use leftovers for lunch the next day or freeze and work it into next week’s meals.

Save up to £50 a month£12 billion worth of food and drink goes to waste in the UK every year

New party bag jewelleryNew party bag jewelleryShalford mum Zöe Stannett has been hand-making jewellery for the last few years to fit in with family life. Previously a Registered Nurse she first turned her hand to making jewellery after completing a number of training sessions at Aluisa Beads in Guildford. Zöe began selling a wide range of her jewellery at various fund-raising events and then a local mum asked her to produce a number of small pieces of jewellery for the

party bags for her daughter’s birthday party. The jewellery and the party bags were a huge success and Zöe immediately spotted a gap in the market for on-trend girls jewellery that was good quality, affordable and unique. MiniZ Jewellery was born! MiniZ jewellery is aimed at girls aged 5 and up with some pieces in the little ladies range that are suitable for Mumz too! Prices start at £6 for an individual piece and go up to around £16. MiniZ can be booked for your

local school fair or function and you can find out more by calling Zoe on (01483) 306 806 or by emailing [email protected]. Little smiles make MiniZ happy!

The flashing light lasts for one minute, giving the child the right amount of time to brush either their upper or lower teeth. Then, they simply move the brush and press the light again, to complete their brushing routine. News and ViewsNew Children’s Dance Academy launches in GuildfordPPA kids is an exciting and dynamic new Children’s Dance Academy based in the heart of Guildford. PPA kids runs alongside the very successful full time musical theatre college PPA (Performance Preparation Academy) based at GSA/Surrey University which trains students aged 16 plus for a professional career in the Musical Theatre and Acting industry. Rachel Crouch, director of PPA says “PPA kids is a children’s dance school with a difference as the main focus will always be to provide fun, energetic and professional dance classes which will keep children excited about their dance classes. We get

so many calls from parents saying their children are bored of ballet’’.

PPA kids will be run by a professional and friendly team of young and vibrant tutors who not only have extensive experience in teaching children but also work at the full time college. Children from ages 3 to 16 can spend a Saturday taking classes in ballet, tap, modern and street jazz. The timetable is designed so children can take classes back to back, stopping parents having to wait around all day. All classes will have a teaching assistant and class sizes are strictly 18 per class.

Based at the newly refurbished PPA Bellerby Theatre in the heart of Guildford town centre, there is

a car park next to the studios which are a stones throw from the shops and cafes. All studios have

professional dance flooring, barres, mirrors and high tech stereo systems.

All children will be involved in a large, full scale, dance production at one of Guildford’s top theatres and they will also appear in West End Galas as part of the PPA dance troupe. For more information call 01483 684 067 or visit www.ppacademy.co.uk.

Family Friendly Holidays in Cyprus Mother of one, Tracy Broadhurst, decided to leave her high pressured sales job to set up Aztec Villas after buying a villa in Cyprus herself. She realised there was a gap in the market for a company that provided family friendly stylishly designed holiday accommodation.

Tracy says “here at Aztec Villas, we want to make your holiday as calm and hassle free as possible. At present, we specialise in the Eastern area of Cyprus (just South of Famagusta). Every villa and apartment we add to our portfolio has been personally visited and vetted by us. We feel this is crucial so that we can be sure it satisfies our extremely high standards and is equipped with all the family friendly “must haves” such as high chairs, stair gates, cot beds, pool/beach toys, Play Stations, DVDs, together with bed linen, bath/hand and pool/beach towels (to save you space in your luggage!), fully equipped kitchens and stylish furnishings. If the properties do not meet these minimum standards, we will not add them to our portfolio.”

“We will only be offering a small selection of properties so that we can continue to give our customers a very personalised and professional service” continues Tracy. “We really want to take the stress away from organising a family holiday, so if you haven’t got time to organise flights, airport transfers, excursions etc. we can do that for you. Whatever you need or want, we can arrange it. For example, we recently sourced appropriate formula milk for a child who had an allergy to cow’s milk.”

Tracy’s motto is “if the kids are happy, we’re happy” and the families who use Aztec Villas are certainly happy. Each Villa on their website has a list of testimonials from guests who have recently stayed in them and as Tracy says “I’d love people to read what families say who have just stayed in one of our properties – it’s much better than hearing it from me!” Visit www.aztecvillas.co.uk

Support for Dads“It’s been a life changing experience,” says Wayne Rooney on becoming a dad, a sentiment felt by most new, and very proud dads. But after the initial excitement of finding out their partner is pregnant, many dads feel they don’t receive as much help and support as mums-to-be, and when the baby arrives and the lack of sleep and new responsibilities sets in, they often feel unprepared and left behind. To help make life easier for dads, the NCT is launching a new set of resources including online booklets and a DVD to help them adjust to their role and handle the major changes that fatherhood throws up. So if you’re a dad and would like to find out more or to join NCT’s online support group go to www.nct.org.uk/dads. The ‘Daddy Cool’ DVD at £4.99 can be ordered from the NCT shop by calling 0845 8100100 or www.nctshop.co.uk.

Samantha Hannay who runs the “Let’s Talk About...” series of workshops in Hindhead for new parents, says ‘fathers often need as much support as new mums. Although the reality for men when they become parents may be different from their partners, the impact on their lives is just as significant and life-changing’ so Sam has introduced a new workshop “Let’s talk about...Becoming a Father”. It will cover the practical and emotional aspects of fatherhood – being a confident father, managing new family life with work life, changing relationships and support and baby development – enjoying one-to-one time”. For more information or to book a place, contact Sam on 01428 606866 or email [email protected].

Some children love reading, others need encouragement and some positively dislike it – but all will learn to read in the end. The most important thing is to develop a love of reading with your child. Just keep encouraging and try to keep it enjoyable!

Read as often as you can with your child. Whilst children read 1. throughout their school day (e.g. from the whiteboard, during a game, from a big shared book), there may not be much individual reading that takes place. This is left more and more to parents.

Be positive! If your child makes mistakes when reading, don’t 2. just say ‘that’s wrong’ – say something like ‘shall we check that together?’ Use praise whenever you can.

Don’t push your child up reading levels too quickly just to keep up 3. with peers. Children will gain confidence and are more likely to enjoy reading when they don’t have to struggle on too many words.

Don’t force your child to read a book page by page if they don’t 4. like it or if it is too difficult. Help them out by sharing the reading. Don’t be afraid to put a book aside completely and let them choose another.

Children learn to read in many different ways, such as helping with 5. internet grocery shopping, reading menus, sorting out DVDs back into their boxes, reading and sending emails. It is not just a race to get through a basket of books at school so they can move to the next one.

Get into a good routine. If your child isn’t the type to pick up a book 6. regularly because they want to – then it is important to set a routine of reading. A few minutes each day will make a huge difference. Bed time is not necessarily the best time for this as your child will be tired.

Liz Walker runs ReadingChest.co.uk - a book rental service specialising in reading scheme books - perfect for children aged 4 to 9. It offers parents the convenience of books matched to your child’s ability delivered to your door. It works along similar lines to DVD rental. Simply read it and return it! Visit readingchest.co.uk to find out more.

Does it affect our children’s intelligence?I had an interesting conversation with a friendly Grandfather last week, he told me he thought we over indulged our children not only with material possessions, but with praise to the point that it is meaningless to them. He divulged that his children had only been praised when it had been well earned and this was infrequently, so they lapped it up whenever given and were always striving for more.

Shortly afterwards I read a newspaper article about a new book ‘Nature Shock’ which opened with the statement: “Don’t praise them, argue with them, and never tell them to say thank you”. The article went on to quote the work of Carol Dwek, a Stanford professor, who has looked to prove that telling a child they are bright causes the opposite result – it doesn’t prevent underperforming, but can actually cause it. The article warned of the dire consequences of praising our children:

“In one study on 400 nine-year-olds in New York, telling them the six words “you are so smart at this” before a test reduced their scores by 20 per cent. This after just a single sentence, let alone the barrage of praise that pummels a typical Western child at school and beyond”.

I might at this point have made a conscious decision to stop praising my children, and modeled my behaviour on the well-meaning grandfather’s thrifty hard earned offerings had I not done a course with The Parent Practice. During the ten-week course we learnt and experienced how descriptive praise can motivate and improve our children’s self esteem and confidence and discovered the influence it can have on our children is far reaching in many ways, including their academic success.

During the course we were made aware of Carol Dwek’s studies – which whilst showing that praising children in the conventional way “You did well in your test, you’re clever” may have adverse affects, praising the effort they put into the process in a constructive descriptive way can improve their academic ability and success.

A social psychologist, Dwek recognised that children have two perceptions about their intelligence, the belief that it is a fixed trait that cannot be changed versus the idea that intelligence is a malleable quality, a potential that can be developed. These beliefs affect tasks that children take on, the effort they are willing to exert, their ability to cope with setbacks and ultimately their academic performance.

Dwek carried out a number of studies in schools that showed a child who is regularly told they are bright, clever, intelligent, smart, or brilliant tends to believe that intelligence is a fixed trait. They are more susceptible to worry about how bright they are, think they are stupid when they fail, tend to dislike and avoid effort, and are more likely to give up in the face of academic difficulty. However, those that were descriptively praised for their effort developed a growth mindset,

believing intelligence is something that can be cultivated, making children want to do just that. They are more likely to value learning over looking clever, enjoy effort and challenges and thrive in the face of difficulty. There are a number of fascinating interviews with Carol Dwek on YouTube about her studies and their results.

As parents we are largely responsible, the messages we give our children can mould which of the two beliefs they will adopt. If our child does well in a test and we praise them with a direct message - “Well done you’re clever”, it may give them the fixed view about intelligence with all its vulnerabilities. However, if we praise in detail, the effort that went into preparing for and completing the test, they are more likely to foster the malleable view with all its hardiness and resilience.

Having adopted the skills and strategies I learned during The Parent Practice course I watch with wonder how the language I use with my children affects their self-perception and view of the world. Thankfully, not only is their confidence blossoming, but so is my mine with regard to how I am doing as a parent. I now also feel better equipped to assess and make educated judgments about the wise words of grandfathers and scaremongering media hype.

The Parent Practice run courses, workshops and consultations for families. Please visit www.theparentpractice.com for more information.

Maths is the school subject that worries parents the most. Sometimes the parent is anxious about their own maths ability. Just as often, it’s discovering that the methods we learned at school look completely different from the ones being taught in primary today.

Here are our top tips for parents:

Make maths part of your everyday interactions with your child. Ask 1. your child to help you to work out the change at the shop, to check how many minutes until the train is due, weigh ingredients etc. Pose mathematical questions out loud to yourself (“let’s see, how much change will I need?”) and pause so that your child can ‘come to the rescue’.

Learn about the new methods being taught, particularly the grid 2. method for multiplication and chunking for division. These are more connected to the methods you learned than you might think.

Play board games involving dice and money with your child. Car 3. games such as pub cricket are great for maths interaction, too.

Learn some mathematical magic tricks (you’ll find plenty in our 4. book). Children love magic and will happily do maths if it is part of performing the trick.

When helping with homework, be patient. Children rarely ‘get it’ 5. immediately. And if things are getting fraught, take a break. Often the best way to tackle a problem is to sleep on it.

Don’t say “I was always hopeless at maths”. It’s 6. usually not true, and it can make your child think maths isn’t worth the effort.

Rob Eastaway is the co-author of “Maths for Mums and Dads” - a new book designed to help parents when children ask for help with their maths homework. Even if you loved maths at school things are sometimes taught differently these days and this book will help bring you up to speed. It is available from Amazon and all good book stores (£10.99 published by Square Peg).

Manor House SchoolManor House in Bookham is a small school for girls, that goes through from age 2-16. Every year Manor House School celebrates Theme Week where the girls observe and learn about different cultures and everyday life for people around the world. This year’s theme was Australia and Oceania.

Florence in Year 6 wrote about this year’s Theme Week: “Every day there is a different activity. My favourite was the Hawaiian workshop where we got to play on traditional Hawaiian drums that had been hollowed out by termites. We each had a prop like a Hawaiian skirt or floral headdress and did hula dancing. After that we watched a slide show of pictures of Hawaii; it was very colourful and lush. Sadly, the workshop came to an end but this was only one of the interesting things we did during that week. We also had a taste of the different foods – it really tingled your taste buds. It’s such a fun week, everyone loves it!”

The next open morning is on Saturday 16th October. Manor House School, Manor House Lane, Little Bookham KT23 4EN 01372 457077 www.manorhouseschool.org

Longacre SchoolHere at Longacre we continue to live by the ethos of our founder that ‘a happy heart goes a long way’. We firmly believe that children will only achieve their potential if they are content and fulfilled. Known for our outstanding pastoral care, Longacre is a school which prides itself upon the development of the individual child and ensures inclusion. Our ethos gets results; we achieve high academic results with consistent level 5 SATs results,

a variety of scholarships and 99% of our children achieving their first choice in senior schooling. With no obligation to feed our own senior school, we focus upon the right school for the individual child.

As Alexia Bracewell, Headmistress, says “Our children are respected and cherished for their individual traits, we love what they are and we have no wish to change them into anything other than who they are”. Come and see for yourself what makes Longacre special; to arrange a visit please call Reception on 01483 893225. Longacre School, Shamley Green, Guildford.

Aldro SchoolAldro is a small, family run day and boarding school for 220 boys aged 7-13. It is set in 35 acres of stunning, secluded Surrey countryside. How many other schools offer a lake with an island which can only be reached by rowing boat or an Indiana Jones style rope bridge?

“Bringing out the best in boys” is our forte. We offer an outstanding education which combines academic excellence with a breadth of opportunities outside the classroom. Our scholarship boards speak for themselves – boys go onto all the top senior schools. However equally valued are the boys’ achievements in other areas such as sport, music, chess, art and drama. Aldro boys have the chance to do all the activities that boys really enjoy but which, sadly, so few have the chance to partake in these days: den-making, shooting, fishing, rowing, cubs, scouts, gardening and model railway.Aldro School, Lombard Street,Shackleford, Godalming 01483 810266.www.aldro.org

New Head for St Teresa’s Nursery and Prep SchoolSt Teresa’s Nursery and Prep School in Effingham welcomes new Headmistress, Mary Arnal, in September. Mary brings with her a wealth of experience having taught girls and boys of all ages in Ireland, Spain and South America as well as in the UK.

Mary’s specialist subjects are English and Psychology which she studied at Manchester University and she also has a Postgraduate Certificate in Education and a Masters degree in Applied Linguistics from the University of Edinburgh. She is married to Antonio, a mathematician and has two sons.

Mary says, “I am thrilled to be taking over the Headship of St Teresa’s Nursery and Prep in September. The newly built Prep school has a great feel – very warm and friendly – and the girls are delightful! I am looking forward enormously to working with Headmistress, Mrs Falconer and all the staff, parents and girls and to taking the school forward whilst ensuring that it retains its outstanding legacy”.

Barrow Hills - Common Entrance SuccessHuge congratulations to the children in Year 8 at Barrow Hills School who all passed their Common Entrance exams with flying colours. Not only did they pass, but they passed with excellent grades, ensuring they will also be serious contenders for places in the top sets. They all gained places at their first choice of Senior Schools including Charterhouse, Cranleigh, Tormead, Sherborne, Bradfield, Frensham, KES, Worth, Seaford and St George’s College Weybridge.

Headmaster Matthew Unsworth said, “I am truly delighted for our pupils and for their well deserved success. The children were confident and ambitious in their choices of Senior Schools -

it is a testament to the continuing development of the education we provide that our tradition of 100% success rate at 13+ Common Entrance has been maintained. Over the last four years a continuing programme of standardised assessment has been introduced, along with cutting edge Literacy and Maths teaching programmes. Our new ‘Making Maths Make Sense’ scheme, as spotlighted in a recent Channel 4 documentary, is transforming the way maths is taught and the results are really now bearing fruit.” Barrow Hills School, Roke Lane, Witley, Godalming 01428 683 639

The Duke of Kent School is going placesThe Duke of Kent School has now extended its age range to include GCSEs and this marks a very exciting phase in the School’s development. Children from the age of 3 are able to take advantage of the excellent educational opportunities at the School, which broaden and develop their activities and interests, with small class sizes and good access to the teaching staff. The generous 48-acre site also offers the freedom to develop outward-bound skills appropriate to an older age-range and sport already features strongly in the timetable for all pupils. The new age-range initiative was largely parent driven, as many families wanted to stay on at the School. With day places supplemented by a limited number of weekly boarding opportunities and fees set at an affordable level, the School is able to provide an excellent all-round education. Please contact the Registrar for further details of our next Open Morning on Saturday 16th October or to arrange a tour of the School.

St Ives SchoolThe strength of St Ives is the breadth and range of opportunities and experience it offers to pupils.
