When your child starts school, September becomes the ‘new’New Year. January may be all about diets and denial, but September is about new challenges and new beginnings.

Isobel has moved to a new school, so has new classmates anda new routine. Eliza is now in Reception, under the care of the verysame wonderful teacher who taught Isobel. You’d have thoughtshe’d have learnt to avoid the Butters name second time round! And I’m left feeling just a little less useful.

It’s made me think about what skills I would take back intothe ‘real’ world after nearly seven years as a full time mum. I canconfidently say I’m the master of multi-skilling. Show me a manwho can bottle feed a baby, while potty training a toddler, or cookAnnabel Karmel’s Spaghetti Bolognaise with 37 organic vegetableswhile removing felt tip stains from the new sofa.

I’ve also developed my skills as a manager, co-ordinating a teamof unskilled and broadly unhelpful workers in manual labouraround the house. I can motivate and I’m not afraid to punish.Think how efficient offices across Leeds would be if people weredenied TV and chocolate when deadlines weren’t met!

And if the UN ever needs a first class negotiator – I’m yourwoman. “Five minutes and we’re going.”

“Why not ten minutes Mummy?”pipes up Isobel.“You’ve got seven – that’s my final offer.” If I can get my girls

to leave the playground at Harewood on a sunny afternoon thateasily, imagine what I’d achieve in the boardrooms of Britain?

If returning to work is on your mind, take a look at our featureon page 6. We’ve also got some tips on how to help your childcope with starting school, some advice on how to manage thehomework battle and our regular September look at the very bestClubs and Classes in Leeds. All this and a great competitionto win a season pass to the wonderful Stockeld Park (page 17).

Enjoy your new challenge this September. I’m offto brush up on my taxi driving skills!

SUSAN CUNNINGHAM isone of many mums jugglingmotherhood and a return to

work. Today she’s in a classroom atBrownhill Primary School in Leeds, supporting children with their studies. Susan has been placed hereby Celsian, an agency which providesstaff from nursery environments tofurther education establishments.

“It’s difficult to get a permanentpost because, as a mum I wouldhave to say yes, I want the job, but Ionly want to work on a Mondayand Wednesday,”says Susan. “WithCelsian, it’s really flexible – it fits in.”

At Celsian’s Leeds office, there’s ateam of seven consultants working torecruit staff to schools and nurseries. They’ve forged close links with schoolsand communities and are providing flexible work for both qualified teachers looking to return tothe classroom, and women looking for a new career.

“Education is a female dominated industry, so we work witha lot of mums,”says James March from Celsian. “Becoming amum can often spark a desire to change career. The hours you canwork in education are great if you’re a mum with a young family.”

You don’t need any formal teaching qualifications to signup for Celsian’s help in finding work. However, you will needto go through a CRB check and be able to provide appropriate references. James and his team say more important than qualifications is a passion about working with children.

“We look for people who can engage and inspire children. We want people with a ‘can do’ attitude. Very often, you’ll gointo an environment where you’re filling a gap in their rota andyou need to hit the ground running.”

Susan has that passion and takes it into schools across Leedstwo days a week. While she loves being a mum to her 16 monthold daughter Jaeda, she also loves the difference she’s making inthe classroom as a teaching assistant. With Celsian, she’s able toenjoy doing both.

“I really enjoy working with children who are struggling toget the basics,” says Susan. “It’s great to see their eyes sparklewhen it’s clicked and they start to believe in themselves. Everyday is different. Every day I learn too!”

To find out if Celsian can help you return to workcall James March on 0113 244 0140.www.celsianeducation.co.uk

Getting back TO WORK…Your child has just started school and you’re looking to return tothe working world. But where do you start? We talk to the educationalrecruitment company Celsian about why they wantto hear from you.

Families Leeds meets mum of two Nicola Lawlor from MusicBugs.

NICOLA and her MusicBugs are dancing to Nelly the Elephant and it’s hard totell who is enjoying it more. As the group march around the dance studio at KidsClubhouse in Horsforth, Nicola leads the way before waving goodbye to the circus

that is her Friday class. It’s a job she clearly loves and a far cry from herprevious career as a project manager at British Telecom.

Since launching last April, Nicola has built up a great reputation asan enthusiastic class leader. From September there’ll be seven venuesacross West Yorkshire, offering MusicBugs to pre-school children.Nicola’s success is all the more impressive when you discover she’sbuilt her business while juggling pregnancy and motherhood.

“Harry was born last November,”says Nicola who also has adaughter Sophia. “I remember arriving home from hospital with himand I had to get registers over to one of my teachers because I’d goneinto labour a week early. It was a nightmare! I look back and wonderhow I did it.”

Nicola’s determination to succeed has paid off. MusicBugsclasses are thriving and the families who come along clearly enjoy her approach. The sessions are packed with props from pom poms to rideon ponies.

“The emphasis at MusicBugs is on fun,”says Nicola.“A child doesn’t want to just sit for 40 minutes, so here they can walk around, keep hold of their instruments. As long as they’re enjoying it, it’s fine!”

However, Nicola has a warning. Running your own business ishard and when the music stops, there’s lots of work to be done. After hours admin means while she gets to spend part of the daywith her young children, she spends the evenings at her desk.

“I know I’ll always be able to collect my children from theirpre-school or pick up from my child minder at a reasonable hour,”says Nicola,“but there’s so much to do outside of class and I wasn’tprepared for that.”

With the new term comes the challenge of a new class inAlwoodley and weekly sessions in nurseries across Leeds. It’s a greatway for children in full time childcare to enjoy music and Nicola hopesto encourage many more nurseries to catch the MusicBug. Looking atthe smiles in this Horsforth class, it’s a bug that’s certainly contagious.

MusicBugs is available in Horsforth, Baildon, Yeadon,Guiseley, Roundhay, Farsley and NEW for September –Alwoodley. For more information on days and venues goto www.musicbugs.co.uk. Birthday parties also available!

TO LOOK AT ISOBEL HARDY, it’s hard to believethat just two weeks ago this bright little three yearold was in hospital. She was admitted to the Leeds

Dental Institute for treatment. A fortnight on and Isobel’son the road to recovery, but her mum Rosie still can’tforget the day she discovered the extent of her daughter’s tooth decay.

“I went to the Leeds Dental Institute expecting tobe turned away as another paranoid mother,”saysRosie. Instead she was told that Isobel’s decay hadprogressed too far and the only solution was theremoval of six of her baby teeth.

Isobel (left) is one of the ten new pre-schoolpatients seen every week by the renowned LeedsDental Institute. In the Paediatric Unit, they dealwith the worst cases of decay in Yorkshire. Four inevery ten children here in Leeds have tooth decay soit’s no surprise that family dentists are referring morethan 200 new patients every month to specialists at the Dental Institute.

Mr Stephen Fayle is a Consultant in Paediatric Dentistryhere. He says there are a number of reasons for these alarmingstatistics, but the problem can begin even before a child hastheir first tooth.

“Things go wrong at weaning,”says Mr Fayle.“Somefamilies add extra sugar to food to make it more palettablefor children. However, all this does is make the child usedto having sweet things.”

For some children, like Isobel, decay is unavoidable. Duringher treatment she was diagnosed with weak enamel and so noamount of dietary constraints would have prevented the loss ofher teeth. However for most children decay can be avoided bycontrol of diet and eating patterns.

“Children who eat and drink more frequently – especiallyfruit juices and sugary drinks – are more likely to get decay,”saysMr Fayle.“Try to get your child to eat only at mealtimes. Thatgives the mouth time to rest and recover. In between, the onlysafe drinks are milk and water.”

Many of the pre-school children seeking treatment for advanced decay have been allowed to take bottles of fruit juiceto bed with them at night. The key message from experts herein Leeds is, get your child off a bottle which allows them to‘graze’ and onto a feeder cup . If children need the comfortof a bottle, fill it only with water.

Adding fluoride to the local water supply makes a significantdifference to decay, but in Leeds that doesn’t happen. A childin Yorkshire has twice the decay of a child in the West Midlands, where fluoride is added to water. So it’s up to parents to intro-duce it. The most effective way is to brush all the family’s teethwith adult strength toothpaste.

“All children over three should be using adult strength toothpaste,”says Mr Fayle.“You can use it from six months.Start with a smear, then a pea size blob once the child is three.A child should spit out but NOT rinse. That way they leave somefluoride protection on their teeth.”

Healthy Teeth, Happy Children

Four out of every ten children in Leeds have suffered from tooth decay. Families Leeds

looks at the best way to protect your childʼs teeth with some help from experts in Yorkshire.

At the Hardy house, not only is everyone brushing with adult toothpaste twice a day,but there’s not a fruit juice to be found. Rosie is angry her local dentist didn’t refer her tothe Dental Institute earlier – that way some of Isobel’s six teeth may have been saved. But with Isobel’s healthy smile now back, it’s about making sure the decay doesn’t return.“I went through the ‘this is my fault, what have I done wrong, I’m a useless parent’

phase,”says Rosie. “I’ve been through every emotion butI’ve come to the conclusion that this happened

because of a combination of factors. But we’ve changed our approach

as a family and it won’thappen again.”

TOP TIPS

for Healthy Teeth… DON’T add sugar to weaning food.

DON’T give fruit based drinks at night,

and try to get children off a bottle as soon as

possible. Getting five portions of fruit into

your child is important, but make sure juices

are kept to mealtimes.

Give your child a toothpaste with fluoride.

For under 3s, a good quality children’s

toothpaste is fine, but over 3s should be

using adult toothpaste.

Encourage eating only at mealtimes to give

the mouth time to repair.

Take regular trips to the dentist. You have a

right to NHS dental care so if you can’t find

a place, contact NHS Direct on 0856 4647.

School Bows!

The great Homework debate…Are your after school hoursfilled with arguments?Do you spend familyweekends at war overworksheets? Families Leedsasks if homework is puttingtoo much pressure on familylife with the help of somelocal experts.Jasmine Lee loves her homework. With thehelp of her mum Karen, she enjoys theweekly reading assignments and spellingtests sent home from Rawdon St Peter’s Primary School. However, now Jasmineis moving into Year One, Karen is prepared for change.

“It seems to be commonthat the transition fromReception to Year One isa big step up in terms ofhomework,”says Karen.“I hope not, because Ithink Jasmine learns justas much from playingwith friends.”

When the leadingchildren’s authorEleanor Updalerecently suggestedthat toomuch

homework is polluting our family life,it led to a debate at school gates and instaff rooms across the country. In a national newspaper article, Dr Updale said too muchhomework may be the reason for our children turning into ‘coach potatoes’.

“What drives children out of the garden, away from the kitchen table and in front ofscreens? What gives them the excuse to cutthemselves off? It’s homework.”

Dr Updale is not the first to question thevalue of homework, especially in primaryschools. Cecily Hanlon is a retired teacherfrom Leeds. She received overwhelming support at last year’s Association of Teachersand Lecturers conference, for her motionthat “Homework in our primary schools is awaste of children’s, teacher’s and parent’s

time.” It’s a view she continues tohold today.

“Home should be ahaven,”says Cecily. “If achild has been strugglingwith something at school allday, do they really need tostruggle with it when theyget home? Surely whenchildren are at home it

should be a time forbuilding solid, secure

relationships.”Parents are

divided overthe issue

Page 19: Families Leeds Sept Oct 2010

of homework. While some see their children enjoying the afterschool stimulation, others see it as a battle. One parent told Families Leeds she was unable to see the point of learningspellings which her daughter could not remember a week on.

“My daughter loves going to Rainbows on a Wednesday. But that’s the night we should be drilling our spellings,”said onemum of a six year old. “I struggle to see how learning to spell ‘discussion’ or ‘neighbour’ is more beneficial to my daughter’s development, than making friends and enjoying being a child. Especially when she can’t remember the spellings the day afterthe test!”

Guidelines for schools say a five year old should do one hourof homework a week, consisting of reading and spelling along-side literacy and numeracy work. By Year Three the workloadshould rise to an hour and a half each week. However critics sayany homework puts pressure on the most disadvantaged childrenin our schools who don’t have the parental support at home.A more useful approach, says Cecily Hanlon, is to encourage families to spend time together.

“Get your child to help you write a shopping list, or estimatehow many potatoes are needed for supper. Play a board gamewith them or go for a walk. Just participate in family life.”

And many parents agree. Victoria Iball is keen to support herson Finlo’s education, but she’s equally keen to protect his afterschool time.

“If a sunny evening of play is underway, we feel the valueof that more strongly,” says Victoria. “His teachers have been understanding and his progress unaffected. When other countriesstart formal schooling later than in our system, added homeworkat this stage seems crazy.”

Jane Disley is Headteacher at RichmondHouse School in Far Headingley. She givesFamilies Leeds her views on homework.

Are our children getting too much homework?I think there is too much emphasis – especially for little children –on homework. I’m not sure how effective it is when a child hasbeen working hard all day in the classroom, expecting them towork in the evening.

What do you think is an appropriate amountof homework? At Richmond House, we do set homework. At Year 1, it goeshome three times a week. I’d expect some practice of spellingsand timetables. There can be an activity that can be done easilywith a parent. This would take ten minutes maximum – but NOTanything that requires a child to be taught. I think a big problemcomes with maths because many parents didn’t learn maths inthe way it’s taught today. That can create conflict.

What input should parents have?I’d expect a parent to take some time to explain things to a child, not to actually teach them. A parent’s role is to be a parent, tolook after the child, to love a child. It’s not a parent’s role to be ateacher in a home environment. Children need to go home andenjoy family life, enjoy playing and being young children.

We try to keep homework flexible. There’s no point in ateacher giving out homework if there is an after school birthdayparty. Homework is for a child to do with a parent NOT a parentpushing a child to do it. I always say to parents, at the pointit becomes a tussle with the child, or the child isn’t learning, you need to stop completely.

If a child is in a school where there’s an expectation on behaviour, however much fun we make it, there is a lot of timewhen they need to concentrate. Children can only do that forso long. We can’t expect them to do it again in the evening.

Providing your child with a nutritious lunch will give themenergy, help them concentrate and focus their behaviour. However, finding truly healthy choices is tough. Did youknow that children eating a packed lunch consume morefat, sugar and salt, on average than their school dinnercounterparts? So what’s the recipe for the perfect pack up?

A healthy lunchboxshould include…COMPLEX CARBOHYDRATEChoose from brown bread, brown rice, wholemeal pitta, wholemeal wrap, oatcakes. This provides slow release energy andkeeps blood sugar stable.

FRESH FRUIT AND VEGETABLESTry and ‘eat a rainbow’ every day. Five portions should be a conservative goal!

GOOD QUALITY PROTEINChoose from chicken, meat (preferably not processed), fish, eggs, cheese. This will help your child grow and develop.

DAIRYGive your child the calcium they need with yoghurt, milk or cheese.

DRINKSWater is definitely best for hydration. Milk (kept cold), smoothiesand diluted fresh fruit juice (½ & ½) are all good choices. Drinkssweetened with sugar provide unnecessary calories, whilst ‘noadded sugar’ usually means nasty chemical sweeteners.

Most of the lunchboxes we are packing for our children are unhealthy. That’saccording to a recent report by the University of Leeds. We’ve asked NutritionalTherapist Jenny Thewlis to help you pack up the perfect lunchbox.

Jenny’sPerfectPackedLunch… Use Wholemeal Pitta – they tend to go less soggy over the course of the morning. Ditch the sandwich and opt for a cold pasta dish, or hummus and raw vegetables. Eat a rainbow! Try cherry tomatoes, carrots, cucumber and yellow or orange peppers.

Keep tomatoes out of sandwiches. They’ll make them soggy! Choose natural yoghurt and add some fruit. Try and vary foods each day – think outside the sandwich box! For inspiration, look at www.schoolfoodtrust.org.uk/schools/projects/

packed-lunches/packed-lunch-ideas

Rose Court – Where Little Ones Can Blossom

Rose Court Nursery & Pre-Prep provides a nurturing beginning

for three to seven year olds. The nursery and pre-prep is

based in light, airy buildings in Headingley and form part of

The Grammar School at Leeds. Classrooms are an attractive

blend of purpose built and specially refurbished, while outdoor

areas include spacious gardens and a playing field.

Rose Court prides itself on being a safe and welcoming

environment for boys and girls where each teacher and

teaching assistant knows every one of the pupils by name.

Head of Rose Court, Anne Pickering, says: “Experience tells

us that play is the key to successful early learning. We use

organised play to help pupils to become confident learners

with good social skills.”

Children are taught numeracy and literacy, moving on to learn

about science and the environment. History and geography

include visits and provide insights to other cultures. Children

also have lots of opportunity for activity outside the classroom,

including a gymnastics and games programme, plus arts,

crafts, music, drama and dance. Around 22 extra-curricular

STARTING SCHOOL is a huge event in the life of a family.None of us wants to be the parent dropping off the clingy, tearful child so we offer some tried and tested tips to make

those first days as stress-free and enjoyable as possible.

Work with the school to prepare your child for their newschool. You will be invited to visit, usually in the term before, and have the chance to meet the teachers and the otherpupils. This helps ease the children into the life of the classroom and gives them the chance to make a fewfriends before they start.

It may seem obvious, but make sure that your child getsa good night’s sleep and is up in time to have a relaxed breakfast before heading to school. In this way they willadjust and look forward to the day ahead. You don’t wanta tired and grumpy child who has been rushed out of thehouse at the last minute.

Having a set routine when you arrive at school. Try to arrivea few minutes early. This will give you time to help yourchild to hang up their coat and put their belongings away. Some schools will allow you to stay for a few minutes and encourage the children to start to play. Others will want allthe children to go and sit together for the register, or line upoutside and come in as a class. Stick to your school’s system.

If you sense your child feels uneasy at drop off, focus on thepositive. Ask to see a project or other activity which he or shehas been working on. When it is time to say goodbye, do itpositively. Don’t sneak off! Leave them with a few reassuringwords about how much fun they are going to have and thatyou will be back to collect them later.

When you pick your child up at the end of the school day, praise them for something that they did well that morninglike finding their coat peg, or changing out of their shoeswithout help. Focus on the positive, notthat they cried a little.

Most children settle into the routineof school within the first fewweeks, but if your child continuesto have trouble adjusting, set up a meeting with theteacher to discuss how youcan work together. Followthe guidance offered. Yourchild’s teacher has the samepriority as you – a happy, settled pupil who is readyto find out how much funlearning can be!

Starting SCHOOL…A child’s first day at school should be a day of happy memories as your little one skipsconfidently into the classroom with a wave. But the reality might be a little different.

HALLOWEEN at STOCKELD PARK22nd – 31st October

A great week of half term fun to kick start the new season at this award winning attraction. Meet the Enchanted Forest’s new arrivals on a spooky treasure hunt, join apottery painting session and prepare to be scared on Fright Night (29th – 31st October). The Halloween production by Atmosfear Entertainment is a great alternative to ‘trick ortreating’, but be warned. It’s only for the brave!

“We’re encouraging families to come dressed up in spooky clothes and visitour haunted woods,”says Amy Thornton from Stockeld Park. “As night falls in the Enchanted Forest, it will be like walking through a live ghost train!”

For a gentler woodland walk, there’s the hugely popular Theatre in the Woodson Thursday 28th October. This dusk time production is great for pre-school children and

a chance to see theatre, and the woods come to life.As well as being Chief Christmas Elf, Amy has also turned pumpkin farmer this year. Out in Stockeld’s grounds she’s

lovingly nurtured a field of pumpkins which will be ripe and ready for half term visitors to pick and carve. Meanwhile behind the scenes, she’s incharge of a team of elves busily wrapping the 5,000 presents needed in Santa’s Grotto come November. It’s hard work but lots offun and this year, Stockeld is passing some of that Christmas spirit back to you, the customer.

“We’ve listened to our visitors and realised how many visit Stockeld Park time and again over the season,”says Amy. “So to givethem something back we’ve launched a Season Card.”
