Did you know that Variety Village is a charity?

Variety Village provides endless opportunities for people with disabilities. Here they can reach milestones and exceed goals they couldn’t imagine accomplishing without the facility and staff at Variety Village. The effect of an inclusive environment can change the way they see themselves, and help shape their lives.

However, program fees and membership dues alone are not sufficient to cover the costs involved in keeping rates low, offering assistance to low-income children and families, and continually expanding and improving our facilities.

In a world of differences,we make a world of difference.

John Willson, CEO

Welcome to Variety Village – our fitness, recreation and sport programs and facilities are a very important part of enhancing the quality of life for our community.

It is with great pleasure that I introduce to you the programs, holiday camps, events and services available at Variety Village by way of the 2015/2016 Fall and Winter Program Guide. This guide will connect you to opportunities for physical activity and recreation.

Variety Village offers a wide range of fitness programs such as Parent & Tot Aquafit, Circuit Fitness, Cardio & Weights, Chair Fitness, Zumba® Toning, Zumba® Fitness, Tai Chi, Family Gym, Kids’ Zone and SPLASH-tastic to name a few. There are also opportunities in sport beginning at the grassroots level all the way up to provincial and national competitions. Our sports teams include track, weightlifting, wheelchair basketball, Taekwondo, power lifting, swimming, synchronized swim. This resource contains a listing of holiday camps.

Greetings from our CEO

I am especially looking forward to our 3rd Annual Open Water Swim, welcoming elite swimmers from across Ontario, our holiday camps and keeping kids active on PA days.

I encourage everyone to use this guide to help you connect with others and get involved in our vibrant community. Families joining Variety Village demonstrate their commitment to activity and the importance of exercise on a daily basis. Alongside programs available for parents, we offer recreational and aquatics programs for children that create new connections, foster fundamental movement skills and teach simple sport skills. Our goal is to promote physical activity in an environment that is inclusive.

IntrOduCIng PhysICAl lItErACy tO yOur InFAnt Or tOddlEr

Parent and child can register for a number of early morning/early afternoon programs in the fieldhouse or pool. The activities are designed to foster social play and connections for the child and friendships for the parents. Kids under three years are free.

Programs for children three to six years of age. In the fieldhouse and in the pool, we introduce children to fundamental movement in an environment that is fun, inclusive and interactive.

nOt surE WhICh sPOrt yOur ChIld Is IntErEstEd In PursuIng?

As children transition out of our Children in Motion classes and show an interest in sport, Variety Village offers multi-sport classes on land and Red Cross swim programs in water. These classes introduce, and help to foster, sport skills.

Throughout the 11-week program, coaches from our teams will guest teach, introducing simple sport specific skills. This gives children the opportunity to experience each of the sports we offer at Variety Village. For children five years and older.

IntrOduCtIOn tO sPOrt

This program suits children who have mastered basic fundamental movement skills through the Children in Motion and/or Multi-sport classes. If your child has an interest in participating in a specific sport on land or in water, Variety Village offers eight introduction to sport teams including, wheelchair basketball, weightlifting, track, swimming, synchronized swimming, Taekwondo, powerlifting and boccia.

Coaches facilitating the program follow a teaching model that focuses on age, stage and development under the Canadian Sport for Life Long Term Athlete Development Model (LTAD). At this level, children are introduced to the ABC’s of sport: agility, balance and coordination, in an environment that is athlete-centered, fun, safe and inclusive. For children five years or older.

vArIEty vIllAgE AthlEtIC CluBs

Youngsters who have excelled in the grassroots programs and are interested in competition will transition towards the Athletic Clubs, where the focus is on competition following the LTAD model. At this level youngsters are required to commit to year-long training schedules, competitions and camps within the region, province and country. Coaches are certified under the National Coaching Certification Program with years of expertise in their sport.

AQUATIC CENTRE IMPROVEMENTS AND CLOSURE

The aquatic facilities are scheduled for major improvements, including replacement of our main pool drain valves, digital flow meter, variable frequency motor, deep end wall tiles, water meter and backflow prevention, diesel fuel system upgrade, tile re-grouting, and annual electrical inspection, testing and preventative maintenance.

Whew! That’s a lot of work to be done to refresh our facilities. The most time-consuming project will be the tile re-grouting; the existing grout in the main pool will be replaced with an attractive, high-performance grout, which comes with a 25-year limited warranty. These changes will benefit our members by significantly reducing the amount of downtime and closures going forward.

CLOSURE FRIDAy, AUGUST 28 AT 1PM FOR 6 - 8 WEEkS In order to bring you these improvements and upgrades, we do need to close the aquatic facility starting Friday, August 28 at 1pm for 6 - 8 weeks while the necessary work is completed.

This closure will delay our Aquatics Fall Session program start dates, but Variety Village instructors will ensure that all Red Cross swimmers will have the necessary hours for their level.

We look forward to reopening the aquatics centre with these updates and improvements!
