Signs You Need More Insulation

Insulation serves dual purposes in a home. In the winter, insulation prevents heat loss and keeps homes comfortably warm, while in the summer it buffers a home from the heat

and prevent cold air from escaping.Insulation also is one of the most cost-effective ways to make a home more energy-efficient.

Homeowners may recognize the importance of insulation, but be unaware of how to recognize when insulation needs to be replaced or even if they have adequate insulation in their homes. Ac-cording to the United States Department of En-ergy, a qualified home energy auditor can check a homes insulation as part of a whole-house energy assessment. An energy assessment, also known as a home energy audit, also helps to identify areas of the home that are in need of air sealing.Homeowners also can do their own visual as-sessments to determine if their homes need more insulation. The following are a handful of signs that indicate you may have an insulation deficit in your home. If the snow melts on your roof but not on your

neighbors, this may be a sign that you need more insulation in the attic. Melting snow means heat is escaping from the attic or under the eaves.

Bare spots in the attic and insulation that does not extend to the edge of the roof may indicate a need for more.

Check the level of insulation in the attic. If it is level with or falls below the ceiling joists, an extra layer should be installed.

If energy bills are higher than normal for the time of year, that may be due to a lack of in-sulation. Notice whether the HVAC system is running more than usual.

An unusually warm second story during hot weather also may be indicative of an insula-tion deficiency. Such a situation suggests hot air is infiltrating the home through the roof.

When adding insulation, choose the right R-val-ue for your home. R-value measures how well certain materials, such as insulation, resist heat. The higher the R-value, the greater the insula-tion. Therefore, insulation with a higher R-value will perform better than insulation with a lower rating. Colder climates may require a higher R-value than warmer ones.

Cleaning windows wont necessarily be easy, but the following eight-step process can make the task less dif-ficult and time-consuming.

1. Choose a day when it is overcast so you will not be blinded by the sun while cleaning. This also helps prevent streaking. Here are the basic supplies you will need: cleaning solution cloth, newspaper or squeegee towel spray bottle extension pole to reach high windows vacuum ladder or step stool garden hose2. Take down and clean drapery or blinds when clean-ing the windows.3. Start with the interior side of the windows, as they are easier to access. Place a towel on the sill to catch any drops so the sill or the floor will stay dry.

4. Spray a lint-free cloth or the window directly with the cleaning solution. The edges and corners of the window tend to accumulate the most grime, so begin by cleaning those areas first. Once they are clean and you will not exchange dirt to the center of the window, work on the middle. Wipe the windows in a horizontal direction to help alleviate dripping.5. To create a streak-free surface, some people prefer to use a squeegee to drag out any pockets of moisture for more even drying. Buff out any other streaks with newspaper.6. Vacuum the window sill and frame afterward to catch any dust and debris.7. Move outdoors and start off by spraying the win-dow with a garden hose to loosen any of the accumu-lated grime. Use your cleaning solution to dissolve the rest of the dirt.

8. If exterior second-floor windows are hard to reach, consider using a ladder and extension pole to extend your reach. Upper windows will not be scrutinized as closely as lower windows, so you may have a greater margin for error. If the windows are simply too high up, rely on a professional window cleaner to get the job done rather than risk falls or other injuries.

Energy savings

Consider appliances that reduce energy usage. Energy Star appliances are pro-duced in adherence to international standards for energy efficiency. The program was started more than 20 years ago by the EPA and the Department of Energy. Since then, other countries have adopted the program. Appliances that feature the Energy Star logo use 20 to 30 percent less energy than required by typical federal stan-dards. Homeowners who purchase qualifying appliances may be eligible for tax breaks and other incentives.Consider your lifestyleIt is easy to be overwhelmed and awestruck by the number of appliances available. You may desire the biggest and best there is, but if you are not a superstar in the kitchen, you may not need the commercial stove.
