SAYIN’I’m just

I’m just sayin’,

I used to be fashionable. Well. Maybe that’s a bit ofa stretch. What I should say is I used to try to befashionable.

I’ve never been a trendsetter. I don’t think Icould have ever done one of our MyStyle’sbecause I didn’t focus that much on creatinga personal style. But I did pay attention tothe trends. Spend more time than I shouldhave wandering through department stores andboutiques. Treat visits to the Von Maur shoe saleroom like a field trip.

Ah. Those were the days.

Now I buy my clothes at places that have shoppingcarts, so my toddler daughter can be contained.I throw T-shirts and slacks into the cart withdiapers, yogurt and frozen pizza. Dressing rooms? What’s that? Much easier to try it on at home, crossmy fingers that it fits and if it doesn’t return it on mynext trip to the superstore.

It’s not that I don’t care. I still pay attention to thetrends. I just don’t implement them. I still like to look.

Which is why I’m loving this fashion issue. It’s perfectfor us busy moms who work our clothes shopping

into our grocery shopping. See a look you like in thesepages? Toss it in the cart.

For those of us with more time to leisurely meanderthrough the stores and boutiques, check out the lookshere and take the time to put your own spin on them.Use our looks for inspiration.

I hope you love the looks and the photos as much as Ido. I know that we gave credit where credit was due tothe models, makeup artists, photographers andstylists. And believe me, they deserve it.

Looking pretty for a photo is not as easy as it looks. Those divas on “America’s Next Top Model” aren’t justbig whiners. Everyone involved put in hours upon hoursof time for each photo shoot, and for that, I want tosay thanks.

Two names you won’t see anywhere, but who deservejust as much thanks, are the creative director and artdirector for this project.Michael Zydzik and SethSmith. This was their baby. They gave a lot of theirpassion to this project and it shows.

Thanks guys. And get ready. The Holiday ShoppingGuide is just around the corner.

PintsandPigskins Are you ready for some football?{

Whew, what an opening week forthe NFL! A thrilling Thursday nightovertime game and the doubleheaderon Monday night. Frankly, I’m a bitwinded. I know, I know. I should havedone my own preseason training— going out for a beer for the firstquarter, then ramping up until I gotinto game shape. Either way, I’m atrooper and I’ll power through.

Week Two of the Monday NightFootball bar tour brings us to PrimeTime, 4001 Center Point Rd., in CedarRapids for the game between theIndianapolis Colts and the MiamiDolphins. The place is very spacious, filled with plenty of high-top tablesand a bar nested in the rear. Thetheme to the place is sports andlots of it. The place was pretty busyand filled with sports fans, so itwas a great atmosphere to catch agame. Even though it was busy, wewere still able to push three tablestogether in front of the biggest TVin the bar, a 61-inch model in thecorner. Another nice touch is theoutdoor patio in the front of the bar.

Prime Time has an extensive foodmenu. Burgers, chicken sandwiches, pizza, wraps and plenty of friedappetizers are on the menu, as wellas two unique items: baby cakes andbroasted chicken. I need a separateparagraph to discuss the broastedchicken, so I’ll touch on baby cakesfirst. Baby cakes are small hashbrown patties, and they are prettyawesome. My only regret is that Iwasn’t able to enjoy the baby cakeswith maple syrup and some bacon.

Since Prime Time’s sign says“featuring broasted chicken,” Iexpect big things. Does anyone reallyknow what “broasted” is? I haveseen the past five seasons of TopChef and not once have I ever seensomeone “broast” something. From

what I can tell, broasted chicken is acombination of roasting and frying, except without the heavy coating orbatter. The outside is crispy and theinside is moist and tender.

Prime Time has a full bar, withplenty of beers on tap, as well as anice variety of tall boys. They evenhave the seasonal Samuel AdamOctoberfest on tap. Prime time isalso running some Monday NightFootball specials, including $2.25 tallboys and a discount on nachos andone or two topping pizzas. Great job,Prime Time.

This bar was a great spot to watch agame: good food, great atmosphereand plenty of space for you anda bunch of friends. Put it on yourlist for your next Monday NightFootball outing. Many thanks for barsuggestions readers. They have beenworked into my tour rotation, so lookfor a review in the coming weeks. Please keep them coming.

Being the type of person that likesto change my bag with every outfit,I needed a place to get cute purseswithout the designer price tag. Ifigured that if I was struggling, theremust be other women out therewith the same dilemma and I wasdetermined to find the solution. ThePurse-N-ality concept was dreamt upin August of 2005 with the opening ofmy first store in Cedar Falls, Iowa. TheMarion location followed, opening inthe fall of 2007.At any given time, our stores haveseveral thousand bags on the shelves.A wide selection is very importantto me, but I also strive to provideuniqueness. For these reasons, newshipments with fresh styles arriveweekly. Most of the handbag styles in mystores are inspired by designers. For example, if you visit your localdepartment store and find a Coach©

style that retails for $400, you couldmost likely find something similar atPurse-N-ality for $45. We carry bags

that are inspired by many designers, such as Chanel©, Dooney & Bourke©,Prada©, Jimmy Choo©, Brighton©,and Kate Spade© to name a few.We also offer a great rewards

program. It’s absolutely free, and youreceive a $10 gift card for every $100you spend. We simply record all ofyour purchases over time, and issueyou a complimentary gift card everytime you reach $100. Essentially, it’san additional 10% savings over time!!A lot of my customers stop by severaltimes a week to check out the newitems, and it’s been a lot of fun gettingto know my fellow purse freaks in theCedar Rapids area!

KELSEY SHEEHY IS A FULL-TIME JOURNALISM/SPANISH STUDENT AT THEUNIVERSITY OF IOWA, GRADUATING IN DECEMBER, WITH NO IDEA WHAT I ’D LIKETO BE WHEN I GROW UP. I JUST HOPE IT INVOLVES A BOTTLE OF WINE, DOVE

DARK CHOCOLATE AND A LITTLE ADVENTURE.

The first time I went canoeing wasa disaster. My scrawny preteen armsrefused to paddle in the straight linerequired to get me to shore, and I wasleft stranded in the middle of a tinypond until someone rowed out andtowed me back to shore.

While I have bulked up considerablysince middle school, I was still a littleapprehensive to make another soloventure onto any body of water largerthan a swimming pool. So I enlisted afew friends to help me celebrate thepassing of summer on the waters ofLake Macbride. Happily, the secondattempt went off without a hitch.

Our party of four rented a pair oftwo-person canoes, bound themtogether with the straps of our lifejackets (I’m not sure this technique isrecommended by the park service), andpaddled out to explore the 940 acrelake. The row was pleasant, until myleft bicep and shoulder started to burn— tying our canoes together restrictedmy paddling to one side of the boat.Fortunately, my companions at thehelm of our fleet were easily distractedby conversation and it was not longbefore we were floating, paddles in ourlaps, taking in the beauty of the lake.

In order to make it back to shorebefore our rental period expired— $8.95 bought us an hour for eachtwo-person canoe — we unstrappedour vessels and it was each boat foritself as we raced back to shore. It wasan easy victory for my canoe, thanksin no small part to the strength of mypaddling companion, and we returnedour life vests to the rental counterwith only a few minutes to spare.

Our canoe trip caught the end of therental season at Lake Macbride, butyou still can get your canoeing fixat McDonough Canoe rental (www.mcdonoughcanoerental.com) inMonticello until mid-October.

Plan for a full day at McDonough’s.Its canoe trips take you down eightmiles of the Maquoketa River, endingat Pictured Rocks Park. The trip takesthree hours at a floating pace, butcan last longer if you stop at sandbarsalong the way; $30 secures you acanoe, paddles, life jackets and ashuttle back to your starting point.Just be sure to get to Pictured Rocksbefore 6:30 p.m., or you’ll have a longwalk back to your car.

EcoCentric { Greening your life. One step at a time.

Information technology (aka that swirling cloudof information called the World Wide Web and allthe technologies we use to access it) may seemsort of green. Or at least, that it’s notnot green. But take a look at these stats and you’llunderstand the factors driving greener informationtechnology practices and products.

● Energy availability — 1.5 billion people arenow online worldwide; 80 percent of the world’spopulation however is not. In some areas, newpower feeds using traditional methods are difficultor impossible to obtain.

● Energy and equipment costs — InformationTechnology demand is growing 12 times fasterthan the overall demand for energy. Governmentsworldwide are moving to enact legislation thatwill track and limit carbon emissions.

● Equipment costs and life cycle — InformationTechnology equipment — like computers, monitors, printers — is replaced every three to five years,so by 2010 there’s the potential for one billioncomputers worth of e-waste. According to theUnited Nations Environment Programme, wediscard 20 to 50 metric tons of computer relatedequipment worldwide each year. This figurerepresents 5 percent of all municipal solid waste.

●Data center costs — Data centers consumedabout 180 billion kilowatts in 2007, a figure that isexpected to double by 2010. Escalating equipmentand energy costs within the data center combinedwith rising carbon emissions is helping create theperfect storm.

●People, profit and planet — InformationTechnology practices are subject to the sametriple bottom line success factors as businesses.Practices that positively impact people, profit andthe planet is the new way to measure success.

Owner @ JiamenInnovative Asian Cuisine

Help me out. How do youpronounce the name of therestaurant?Zha-men. In Chinese, it means family.I say all of the people who come to myrestaurant are like a part of my family.

How did you get into therestaurant business?I came to the United States (fromChina) when I was 17. I first started ina restaurant in Manhattan. I saved alot of money to open a restaurant inHarrisburg, Penn. I was 24. I came herein 2003 to open Osaka. I like CedarRapids. People are nice. We get verygood business, and I have two kids. Idon’t want to move again.

Compare Osaka and Jiamen? It’s totally different cuisine. At Osaka,

we serve Japanese food. Here it isinnovative Asian cuisine. It is the newstyle. People think Chinese food, theythink egg roll, chicken broccoli. Westill have some traditional dishes, butwe want to let people try what’s newright now.

What’s your favorite dish onthe menu?A lot of things! The Oven BakedChilean Sea Bass (fresh Chilean seabass marinated in a light soy saucewith melted butter, Fuji apples, carrots, and rose petals, then baked) is verygood.

Tell me about your teas. Thetea menu is two pages long!I just want to share my experience toall of the people here: Drinking tea ishealthy for you. All the teas on themenu — green, white, flower, pu-erh,black, oolong — are good for differentbenefits. Help you to lower cholesterol,or good for your liver, or to relax.

BOOKTALK { Natalie Ditmars and Caitlin Slessor give you theCliffs Notes. What they are reading right now andwhich books they can’t wait to crack open.

I’ve mentioned that “THEGIRL WITH A DRAGONTATTOO” is a good read ifyou’re looking for a twistedinternational thriller. Theauthor Stieg Larsson sadlydied in 2004 after writingthree books in the series(though his Web site speaksof rumors of a partiallyfinished fourth novel). All werepublished posthumously in hisnative Swedish. The trickle tothe United States has beenbehind by about three years, but fans can now read bookNo. 2, “THE GIRL WHOPLAYED WITH FIRE.” TheGirl, Lisbeth Salander, is back

and more mysterious thanever. This time, her past is thecentral mystery.

After police discover herfingerprints on a murder

weapon, Salander becomesthe primary suspect in themurder of a couple who wasinvolved in an investigationof the sex trade in Sweden. The Millennium magazine,

where her maybe-friendMichael Blomquist works asan investigative journalist, wasjust about to publish one ofthe victim’s articles that wouldexpose high level Swedishofficials in a scandal.

Thus begins the investigationinto Salander’s life. From“Tattoo,” we already know thatshe was determined mentallyincompetent as a child. Thereason is veiled almost untilthe end of Fire. Blomquistchallenges the police toa race for the truth. Theofficial investigation focusesexclusively on Lisbeth as acrazed mentally incompetent

killer, while Blomquist looksfor an alternate explanation.Racy and dark, this bookdoesn’t feel as long as its 569pages.

I’m not going to lie, the endingis a true cliffhanger thatrequires readers to pick upthe third book in the series,“THE GIRL WHO KICKEDTHE HORNET’S NEST.”Frustratingly, we’ll have towait until next year for that tobe published in English. Readslowly.

READ SLOWLY, BOOK THREE MAY BE AWHILE

Nothings RealMix rock ‘n‘ roll rhythms withpsychedelic sounds, add fourCedar Rapidians and combinewith a trip to the Battle of theIowa Bands finals and you getNothings Real.

Formed by Eric Lewis and AaronDenny in high school in 1999,the band’s lineup has fluctuatedover the years. But since MattStoner and Robby Cooper joinedfour years ago, Nothings Realhas been ripping up the CedarRapids music scene.

With a name inspired by theBeatles, the band says the rushof playing for a responsivecrowd is as good as it gets.

They like to draw theirinfluences from the specificstyles of favorite musicians, including Tony Kanal, MarkHoppus, Buddy Holly and TravisBarker.

The guys say they write theirsongs collaboratively. Onemember will bring in a riff oranother will bring in some lyrics

and they bounce ideas off eachother from there. The diversityof their songs helps them standout from other bands in thearea, they say.

“No song really sounds likeanother, they each have theirown unique flavor,” Robby says.

In 2007, they released their firstalbum, “Silent TransmissionsEP,” and are hoping to do somemore recording later this year.

After discovering the S & S

Entertainment Battle of theIowa Bands contest online,Nothings Real went on to winthe preliminary round in CedarRapids. It didn’t snag the grandprize — a spot at the RockGone Wild show in Algona lastmonth. But, the concert gotcanceled so, maybe the guys areright. Nothings Real.

GETOUT Take in a show{

While Hancher’s fate iswaiting in the wings, itsshows are going on andgoing out.

A raging Iowa Riverengulfed the venerableperforming arts centerlast summer, leavingUniversity of Iowaofficials looking forhigher ground on whichto relocate and rebuild.Last season, area schools, churches and stagesopened their doors toHancher’s concerts andevents. This season,Hancher is branching outto 11 locations, from DesMoines and Cedar Rapidsto Riverside and Chicago.

Of the 13 eventscanceled in the wake of

the flood, three are backon the 2009-10 roster:Broadway’s “AvenueQ,” the Luna NegraDance Theater and UIalumnus Rinde Eckert’s“Eye Piece,” a theatricalwork exploring visionloss, commissioned byHancher and created incollaboration with theUI Hospitals and ClinicsCenter for MacularDegeneration.

“Avenue Q” is takingHancher down adifferent avenue, to theU.S. Cellular Center inCedar Rapids from March26 to 28.

Charles Swanson,Hancher’s executivedirector, is excited

to have dance backon the programming, beginning earlier thismonth with Hancherbenefit performancesby the Joffrey Balletin Chicago and at theCivic Center of GreaterDes Moines. The danceseason continues withtap tribute “Thank You,Gregory” at City HighSchool on Jan. 23 andthe Luna Negra DanceTheater at the EnglertTheatre on April 16.

The journey onwardhas been eased bycooperation from thealternate sites. “In everysingle one of the venueswe’ve worked with, thestaff at those venues hasbent over backward,”

says Swanson.

He expects two holidayshows to crank upthe heat next winter, when fiddler NatalieMacMaster blazesthrough the RiversideCasino Event Center onDec. 5 and Straight NoChaser brings its hota cappella harmonies tothe Iowa Memorial UnionMain Lounge on Dec. 8.

Audiences looking foran evening of elegancewill find that when theCity Lights Orchestrafrom Chicago plays for adinner and dance Oct. 2in the Riverside CasinoEvent Center.
