FA L L A S H I O Nf
While I was in college my parents introduced a friend and me to a lovely outdoor venue hosting a little stage
where a theater troupe performed Shakespeare. Being an English major, a lover of all things green, and Shakespeare being a beloved bard, I considered this quite a treat.
It was a lovely summer night, with a few spirited stars pushing through the evening sky. Austin Gardens, I soon discovered, was the locale: a perfect backdrop for one of my favorite plays, A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
I remember looking up at the verdant setting from our picnic blanket and announcing that I was going to live in Oak Park someday.
Fast-forward to 2007. I’m finally moving in to a cozy studio in Oak Park. Friends and family come to visit and are forever declaring how charming this town is. So family-friendly, so many great restaurants, so many chic boutiques!
Now let’s skip ahead to the year 2010. I’ve graduated to a condo. I’ve also realized that Oak Park is a perfect fit in more ways than one: my love of style and fashion is thoroughly satiated by the local boutiques.
In the fall of 2010, I joined OakPark.com and Wednesday Journal as the Local Shopping and Fashion blogger and columnist. I was thrilled.
Think big, shop small
My purpose in each write-up and every article is to inform the community’s purchasing decisions. It was my hope to help consumers set their compass to local, independent shops so they would be supporting the entrepreneurs who have taken a leap of faith in opening their own stores — who work assiduously without vacations or holidays, who continue to weather the storm of a depressed economy, who truly are the heartbeat of America.
I like to use the word support. We can choose to support the merchants with our dollars, every time we make a purchase, if we elect to shop small before defaulting to the mall.
Why entrepreneurs?
Writing about entrepreneurs is a subject close to my heart. My grandfather invested his time, energy, and funds into realizing his own dream many years ago. He opened his own martial arts studio (a dojo) and a corresponding retail shop selling martial arts gear. I saw how his passion, drive, and endless hours of hard work put him on the path to success.
I know there were many obstacles my grandfather encountered. Eventually he became a Sixth Dan Shihan, a distinguished sensei in the peaceful martial art known as Aikido. All this and more he accomplished with the support of dedicated students and loyal shoppers.
He was an entrepreneur with a vision and the confidence to believe he could achieve anything he set his mind to.
Meeting of a great mind
Over the last year I’ve had the pleasure of sitting down to interview some of the entrepreneurs in the community: all incredibly talented and hardworking individuals.
I’m amazed at the level of commitment, the dedication and the sacrifices these proprietors have made — and continue to make — at their places of business.
They research the best products to bring to their shops, they provide us with well-edited lines of inspired
products (many made in the USA), they offer an array of eco-friendly and environmentally-conscious merchandise and they feature handmade goods by local artisans.
And let’s not forget: so many items are just plain fashion-forward: avant-garde apparel, fresh footwear and stunning accessories that easily compete with the neighboring boutiques
in Chicago.Can you find
items like these somewhere else? Not all big box shops have put in the time and thought to bring you products that are not only good, but good for you and good for the environment: fair-trade merchandise, upcycled products and handcrafted goods.
You’ll get high-quality products at local boutiques, you’ll receive unparalleled customer service and you won’t lose your shopping partner in the sea of racks at large department stores. You also don’t
have to circle endlessly to find a parking spot (but don’t forget to feed the meter!).
Fall fashion 2011
For the first time in 20 years, Wednesday Journal punctuates the autumn season with our very own guide to Fall Fashion.
This style guide showcases the magnificent fashion apparel offered at local independent retailers, while focusing on trends seen in the larger fashion community.
Our community offers a vibrant and eclectic collection of boutiques, and we want to generate excitement about what goes on in the shops by unveiling styles and designs that consumers crave and the looks they want.
A thrilling exploration of all that local merchants have to offer, this guide is an exhilarating examination of peerless selections. Consider this your road map to incredible apparel and accessories — we’ll take the mystery out of looking great.
From precisely-constructed cosmopolitan designs to artistic, comfort-conscious clothing, it can all be found right here at a neighborhood merchant.
We’re delighted to draw your attention to the fact that fashion and retail are a hugely important and enjoyable part of our community’s economy.
A midsummer night’s premonition

The York Furrier 80th Anniversary Celebration
Perfectly blending trend and tradition, the York Furrier 80th Anniversary Collection features Chicagoland’s most extensive selection of gorgeous furs, stylish shearlings, chic cashmeres, and lightweight rainsilks that reverse to sheared mink. The plethora of plush pelts is accompanied by an array of practical accessories – hats, gloves, scarves, handbags, and, a first for York Furrier, a collection of made for winter wear boots.
Designer Creations
For fashionistas, in both York Furrier locations – the Elmhurst City Centre and the Deer Park Town Center – innovative Designer Creations are prominently displayed. To name drop just a few of the bold design visionaries found in-store, York clients wrap-up in styles by America’s favorite designer, Michael Kors, Hollywood’s red carpet darling, Zac Posen, while globe trotters prefer pieces from Dominic Bellissimo, trend setters delight in the playful pieces of husband and wife design team, Bisang, and girly girls go for the oh so pretty feminine frills provided by Zandra Rhodes.
Fall FUR Something New
To celebrate the 80th Anniversary, York Furrier debuts two new premier collections. Entering the fine outerwear category for the first time, the iconic duo, Mark Badgley and James Mischka, creators of the elegant Badgley Mischka fashion lines, have designed their very first couture line of shearling lamb garments. Each shearling offers classic styling infused with signature glam details. With a flair for dramatic, Badgley Mischka also produced another superb line of handbags and evening clutches featuring strong silhouettes and unique closures. From the land down under, EMU Australia travels to the States with casual chic styles in the finest shearling lamb, comfy knit sweaters, spring season leather jackets, and great accessories, earmuffs to boots, for seasonal style.
Signature Styles & Exceptional Exclusives
Complementing the designer pieces, York Furrier works with their own manufacturers to develop Signature Styles in an array of fur types – mink, sheared mink or beaver, shearlings, even down jackets. These versatile fashions easily pair with casual jeans or go glam over evening wear. For clients who prefer to be one-of-a-kind, the York Furrier craftsmen will transform the client’s vision of the perfect garment from a mere thought into a custom-made Exceptional Exclusive. Between conception and completion, the knowledgeable staff at York Furrier will guide the client through material selection, pattern making, and fittings before monogramming this personalized fashion statement.
Personalized Service
To care for new and older fur and fine outerwear garments, York Furrier offers professional, on-premise services. Using state-of-the-art equipment and technology combined with old world craftsmanship, services include: cleaning, storage in climate controlled vaults, essential repairs, and complete restyling of older garments by York’s talented craftsmen (and women too!). Go green by transforming grandma’s old mink stole or refurbish the vintage treasure found at the neighbor’s garage sale. If properly cared for, a decades old fur may be restyled into a modern silhouette; making fur the ultimate recyclable!

Historic and unexpected Oak Park and Forest Park locales create fascinating backdrops. Yes, Austin Gardens was employed as a neighborhood locale for a photo shoot. How could I resist? Thank you to the Park District of Oak Park for permission to use this location and the historic Cheney Mansion. We are also grateful for permission to use Classic Cinemas Lake Theater, Hemmingway’s Bistro, Oak Park Public Library and Louie’s Grill.
Local talent was sourced to style and fit the models, including wardrobe editors, Danielle Donates and Lauren Metz, hair and makeup artists Frank and Alisa Paganis and Michael Onsouvahn of Pagani Hair Salon. David Kindler brought his lighting expertise to the fashion shoots and Photographer J. Geil, Editorial Design Manager Rebecca Lomax and Content Manager Evan O’Brien of Wednesday Journal all lent their experience and skill on the day of the shoots.

ast spring, Shannon Seeger’s self-designed nature-inspired frocks were voted by Wednes-day Journal and OakPark.com readers as the best in an
online Fashion Contest showcasing the work of Dominican’s senior class. Now, the Wednesday Journal catches up with Shannon as she speaks of future plans and offers advice to fledging fashion design-ers.
Shannon is currently working as a Missionary Intern with Catholic Youth Expeditions. “I took time post-graduation to evaluate where I am being called for my next step in life, whether that is pursuing a ca-reer within the field of fashion or something in a helping profession which incorporates my psychology major,” she explains. “I’m explor-ing where my heart is being lead while serving others. I am excited to see where I might end up after the internship.”
Shannon’s time in nature and with God proved beneficial in help-ing her decom-press after the hectic school
year and time spent working on garments for her senior fashion collection.
The talented designer describes her fashion aesthetic as simple yet detailed, whimsical, and natural. “I am really inspired by the authen-
ticity of an object. I ask myself: What is an object in its truest form? What is that object truly
meant to be? I really enjoy when something just seems so natural, so right the way it is. This is what I want to achieve when I create a garment. I want the fabric to speak for itself because it is being used in a way that exemplifies its natural qualities.”
Patterns and problem solving
She enjoys the work and labor of sewing in general, but more specifically, she enjoys sewing when it involves the whole construction of a new garment, from pattern making and problem solv-ing, to the small details that can be incorporated into a garment that might not be noticed in and of it-self, but somehow make the garment as a whole better.
Discovering interesting lines and ways of constructing a garment and hiding detail within, this is what Shannon relishes most about sewing.
She loves to push and challenge herself. “I want not so much for me to tell the materials what they are and how they should be, but rather allow the materials to give me direction as to how they could best be used. For this reason I don’t often see the need for extensive embellishment but rather gener-ally prefer details which simply enhance the essence of the garment as a whole. By all this I do not mean then that there is only one correct way to use that certain medium, but rather a great number of different ways could be discovered though the familiarization of oneself with the fabric or material. I seem to gravitate toward natural objects, I’m inspired by their truth.”
Recently, Shannon entered a number of her garments in an international competition with the International Textile and Apparel Association. One of her garments was selected for the competition, which had only a 39 percent ac-ceptance rate. Shannon expounds, “I was thrilled! This November, this dress will be in a show in Philadel-phia as well as be published by the organization.”
Understanding garments
Many would-be designers wonder what it takes to make it in the world of fashion. Shannon offers sage advice, “If someone is interested in design, I really believe it is important to understand the
ins and outs of constructing a garment and how clothing works. This deeper understanding of why something is the way it is allows for the ability to create in new ways while still meeting lofty goals, but maybe doing it by bending the rules or norms in a new way. I think if there is an understanding of the body and the garment, and their relationship to one another, this will allow for a solid foundation to build on. Having this can allow for more than simply creating a piece that looks nice, but one that also functions well, and really works with the body.”
Shannon insists that having an understanding of garments on a level beyond aesthetic could poten-tially allow for greater creativity in the construction of a garment. Really knowing and caring about every aspect of the clothing — what fibers are being used and for what purpose, what type of closure would work and be unique for a garment — can give an advantage.
“By taking this deeper approach, one can achieve a fuller under-standing, leading to a better result. So I would suggest, start by under-standing apparel and fashion, apply what you have discovered, and see where that takes you.”
