THE LEADERSHIP

CODENOVEMBER 2017

Paul “Whitey” Kapsalis is a

sales representative in Indianapolis, IN,

where he has successfully built a loyal

customer base Recognized in the

Indianapolis Business Journal’s “Forty

Under 40” list for positive contributions, he

won the Indiana Youth Soccer Presidents

Award in 2010 and the Indiana Sports

Corporation Volunteer of the Year Award

Paul is also a youth minister and Eucharistic minister As a soccer coach he

inspires participants to reach for their goals every day

Ted Gregory is a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter at the Chicago

Tribune In addition to his newspaper work, Ted is co-author of Our Black

Year, a nonfiction account of an African-American family’s effort to

patronize black-owned businesses exclusively for one year He lives near

Chicago, IL, with his wife and children

The conventional perception of a leader is someone who

carries a certain status or holds a particular office: captain,

coach or manager of a sports team, or CEO Those positions

certainly place people in leadership roles, but anyone in any

position can be a leader The Leadership Code explores that

unconventional notion of personal leadership and blends it

with the conventional perception by telling the journey of Paul

“Whitey” Kapsalis, who grew into leadership roles in sports,

business, and other areas of his life from his own experiences

and through the observations of people he encountered on his

path He calls them exceptional everyday leaders

The authors’ approach starts with philotimo–a Greek word

that roughly translates to pride in doing the right thing, but

encompasses a much broader philosophy akin to servant

leadership Philotimo reflects pride and motivation based in

a humility that values others above oneself It also begins

with a commitment to yourself and a decision to be a leader

who cares more about those around you and overall results

than individual acclaim; a leader with heart

In this concise book, you’ll read about the different places in

life where leadership presents itself: in a family, in sports,

and in business In each of those instances, the authors

emphasize that it doesn’t matter what place you occupy

What matters is how you occupy that place That message is

communicated by sharing Paul’s story, the stories of others,

and the lessons they learned

TRAIN YOUR FASCIA, TONE YOUR BODY

OCTOBER 2017

Fasciae are a building network in our body that gives us

support, structure, and form Whether a thigh looks tightly

stretched or rather like jelly basically depends on the tone

of the fibrous connective tissue—the fascia—which

surrounds it Therefore, we must train fasciae in addition to

muscles Only then do we have a well-formed and firm

body shape, and training fasciae is the only consistent way

to get rid of cellulite, bat wings, and a flabby bottom Not

only does training your fasciae ensure a fit body, but it also

enables you to move with juvenile elasticity, easily and

painlessly In cooperation with Dr Robert Schleip, a

renowned researcher of fascia, Divo Müller has developed

new exercises for people who have rather weak connective

tissue Her new full-body program is presented in this

clearly illustrated guide for physiotherapists, movement

trainers, Pilates, yoga and fitness coaches

THE COACH'S GUIDE TO MIND MAPPING

OCTOBER 2017

The Coach's Guide to Mind Mapping is a tool that will help

you become an expert coach Although this particular

learning resource uses soccer examples, it is a technique

that can be universally applied within any sporting context

Because the current demands of modern-day (soccer)

coaching require coaches to know and deliver a greater deal

of knowledge to players, the mind mapping technique aims

to support the coaching process by helping you to identify

and develop your ability to recall technical and tactical

knowledge from memory Additionally, the resource can be

used to help facilitate the knowledge acquisition process as

the learner journeys through their coaching qualifications

while developing key learning skills

This book focuses on developing how you–the coach–can

remember, organize, and deliver the technical and tactical

information that your players need It contains guidelines

for developing, creating, and evaluating the impact of the

mind mapping technique Familiar soccer themes are used

to help you follow the mind mapping examples with ease

Simple worksheets help you to practice the mind mapping

technique, reflect on your development, and set personal

targets So go ahead–learn, coach, develop!

MORE THAN 90 MINUTES

Alejandro Pérez lives by and for soccer For more

than ten years he has followed the action of every

important league in Europe, match day by match day

Alejandro currently works as a journalist and commentator

for Telemundo in the United States, the company that owns

the rights of the Premier League and the World Cup

Previously he worked for ESPN

More Than 90 Minutes is an analysis of tactics, signings,

managers, players, and club directors’ decisions Based on

real examples taken from recent soccer history, the author

dissects these people’s mistakes, their successes, and how

their actions on and off the pitch impacted their play and

their trophy cabinets It is a critical account arising from a

weekly study made over the course of ten years of the top

European leagues and clubs such as Manchester United,

Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Barcelona, Real

Madrid, Atlético de Madrid, Inter Milan, Bayern Munich, and

Borussia Dortmund The author presents and compares the

processes followed by these teams–the ones that were

successful as well as those that failed–while analytically

assessing the most important aspects that make up the

game of soccer

The book selects specific situations in relevant clubs where

tactics, psychology, and the ability to manage a group of

players are combined Without claiming to find a nonexistent

magic formula, it helps the reader–whether they are simply a

fan, manager, player, or director–to understand the intricacies

of this complex sport and to put themselves on the road that

is certain to lead to success This book is one of a kind in the

history of soccer literature, and it is written in a readable,

emphatic, and reflexive style

RUNNING WITH LYDIARD

New Zealander Arthur Lydiard was the most successful trainer

of middle- and long-distance running in the world He coached runners

from different countries, such as Peter Snell (three times gold) and Lasse

Viren (four times gold) In the 50s and 60s Arthur Lydiard not only

revolutionized the middle- and long-distance training, but parallel to this

development he may be considered one of the founders of the jogging

movement

Garth Gilmour is a journalist and was Lydiard’s co-author since

1960 He has written biographies of famous athletes Murray Halberg,

Peter Snell, Sandra Barwick—world famous as an ultra-distance runner—

and paraplegic sportswoman Eve Rimmer

Since the outstanding success of his New Zealand athletes

Snell, Halberg, and Magee at the 1960 Rome Olympics,

Arthur Lydiard’s name has been synonymous with the best

training methods used by the world’s top middle- and long-

distance runners His training plans precipitated an athletic

revolution, stressing physiological conditioning as a

prerequisite to sporting effort and long-duration, even-pace

running at a strong speed as the means of achieving

success Arthur Lydiard instructed runners and coaches in

Finland, Mexico, Venezuela, Denmark, Japan, the United

States, and New Zealand for more than 50 years and had

continued to experiment and refine his methods

Running with Lydiard contains expanded information on

exercise physiology, diet, injury prevention and cure, discussion

of Lydiard’s methods, and revised training schedules
