Discover the true value of a home-town cabinet dealer like Jon Dillard, owner of Hickory Street Cabinets in Troy, who provides residential and commercial cabinetry either from the client’s drawings or from the cabinet designer’s

own ideas that reflect the client’s needs. After measuring, photographing the area and interviewing the client, the designer creates a computerized proposal and design, complete with description and price quote.

“We at Hickory Street know that cabinetry is an investment to your home or business and that’s why we strive on delivering quality cabinets and service that goes beyond the customer’s expectations,” said Dillard. “It’s about having a specific product and getting what the customer needs for their home or business. It’s about getting cabinets that are tailored to the requirements of the customers home or business.”

“Of course, one of my main goals is to always make the customer happy,” he said. “It is very important that they feel comfortable with our company and that they are satisfied in the end.”

With the help of in-house designer, Bianca Andre, each job is designed to fit a customer's tastes and lifestyle of the home or business. The in-house cabinet designer will pay close attention to design details that make the difference to the customer's home or business.

“I always say why not make a statement that’s as unique as you are?” said Andre. There’s no need to settle for the ordinary when you can have the extraordinary. “And getting quality cabinets is more affordable than you might think.” Let a true professional help you define what cabinetry can offer with a kitchen design sure to become the focal point of your home. Let the in-house designer help you get beautiful, unique and functional cabinetry pieces that will have personal value to you and your home or business.

With approximately 44 percent of your utility bill attributed to heating and cooling, energy-efficient window treatments can translate into measurable year-round savings. Many energy experts recommend adding more efficient window coverings rather than going to the expense of replacing the windows. Use of window treatments to control drafts and heat loss dates back hundreds of years to those heavy velvet, puddled draperies found in the castles of Europe. Your local window treatment professional can introduce you to the most energy-efficient products available today. A product’s R-Value is a measurement of its ability to keep heat in and cold out. The higher the R-Value, the better that product is at retaining indoor warmth. A phenomenal product designed to increase R-Value is the Hunter Douglas Architella™ cellular shade. This product features an innovative twist that provides more depth of color at the window and an R-Value of 4 in addition to your current window system. Incredibly, this figure is more than nine times greater than the R-Value provided by a common 2-inch faux wood blind making it a better choice for long-term energy savings. Another elegant and time-tested solution for the reduction of heat loss at the window is the selection of classic shutter systems which offer an average R-Value of 2.5 and provide you with multiple levels of privacy and light control. A product’s Summer U-Value is a measurement of its ability to reflect heat. For example, a window treatment that reduces incoming heat by 70 percent has a summer U-Value of .30. The lower the U-Value, the more effective it is in reflecting heat away from your home. To reduce heat gain, select a low U-Value treatment with white or light colored backing and install it an inch or two from

the glass to create an air pocket. Non-reflected heat that builds up in the pocket during the day will dissipate through the glass at night when the temperature outside cools. Not surprisingly, you will find that shutters and cellular shades can provide the low U-Values you need to lower your electric bill. Put your window treatments to work saving you money by employing them in the business of ultra-violet control and asset protection. Ultraviolet light enter-ing your home as sunlight will quickly fade, weaken and destroy your furniture, flooring, upholstery and artwork. Sheers are multi-talented in that they can reduce this incoming ultra-violet light by 75% or more while reducing glare, preserving outdoor visibility, adding beauty, and providing you with daytime privacy. Hunter Douglas has revolutionized the use of sheers by integrating them into beautiful horizontal and vertical products such as the versatile cordless Duolite® shade and the popular Silhouette® and Luminette® shades designed to block 88% of incoming UV rays and provide for daytime privacy. If you would like to justify the expense of luxurious custom window treatments in your home, work with an experienced window treatment professional to select hard-working window treatments that can meet all of your design requirements. You shouldn’t be afraid to invest in window treatments that look magnificent in your home if they are designed to reduce your home maintenance costs. Jennaver Brown is the owner of Eye on Design, a full-service window treatment shoppe featuring a beautiful Hunter Douglas Gallery™ and a tremendous line of custom fabrics. Save now on Hunter Douglas window coverings with the Fall Rebate Sale. Located at 309 E. Main Street in Belleville; 618-257-9750; eod4u.com.

Renew your Home, Reduce your Energy BillsBeautiful Window Treatments can lead to Lower Energy CostsBy Jennaver Brown

You have wanted to put the final touch on your home’s décor and tie it all together with coor-dinating window treatments, but you aren’t sure that you can justify the expense. Consider then, that the properly designed window treatment can not only add beauty and style to your home but also work to significantly reduce your home maintenance costs over time. A well-engineered plan to dress your windows in the right shutters, silks, sheers or shades will increase your home’s energy efficiency throughout the year and protect your furniture and flooring investments from the permanent damage caused by direct sunlight.

If you are like most homeowners, the thought of taking on a kitchen or bath remodeling project can be overwhelming. You know that updating these two rooms bring the most

value to your home, but where do you start? A quick trip to a home improvement store creates more questions than answers. The expertise and service you were searching for falls short. After a visit to the “high-end” kitchen retailer, you realize that high-end could mean higher costs and possible inconvenience.

Fortunately, there is a better way. With the advances in technology, superior products are available that allow you to remodel your kitchen or bath without going through the mess and inconvenience of traditional tear out remodeling. A complete kitchen or bath makeover can provide new custom counters, backsplashes, shower walls and cabinet fronts in a few days. The update is completed without demolition saving your home from being filled with mess and dust. This is possible through companies that specialize in quality countertop, cabinet, and wall surface refacing – an innova-tive approach that cuts cost and saves time while providing cutting edge products.

Beginning in the kitchen, gorgeous new granite or recycled glass slabs can be installed directly over your existing coun-tertops. The slabs are ¼-inch thick and completely wrap and cover the old countertop. The new overlay granite and glass tops are heat, stain, scratch resistant and maintenance free (no sealing required). Unlike ordinary granite, these slabs have a lifetime warranty against chipping or cracking – quite simply the most durable high-end surface available. Next, a custom Italian glass mosaic backsplash can be installed. Your kitchen now has the updated look showcased on HGTV!

Tired cabinets? A fresh set of doors with matching trim can be installed to your existing cabinets. Change your color and style in just a few days, and at a fraction of the cost of traditional remodeling.

Turn your bathroom into the spa of your dreams. New vanity tops with coordinated shower walls and bathtub surrounds can be installed over existing tile. Custom Italian glass mosaic accents can be added providing the perfect touch to your new private oasis. Chipped or discolored bathtub or shower pan? A fresh, new acrylic liner can be installed directly over the old tub or pan providing an easy cleaning surface while avoiding tear out and expensive plumbing work. Pick out an updated vanity sink and faucet, and your project is complete.

In today’s economic climate, it is important to maximize and retain your home investment with a quality kitchen and bathroom remodel. Take advantage of the technically superior products available today. Only durable, fully war-ranteed granite and glass surfaces that do not require to be sealed provide the value that smart homeowners and savvy homebuyers require.

For more information on quality, no-demolition remodeling visit Granite Transformations website at www.granitetransformations.com/stlouis. Call to schedule a free in-home consultation with a qualified Design Consultant - 636.728.1100. Visit their showrooms located at 1750 Fenpark Drive in Fenton, MO or 17409 Chesterfield Airport Road in Chesterfield, MO.

Some people revel in reds: sun-kissed tomato, inky burgundy, velvet crimson, spicy cayenne and earthy brick.

And you? What's your favorite color?

Whether it's a primary hue like red or blue, or a single shade like butter yellow or lime green, chances are it pleases more than your eye.

"Color has an amazing effect on people, much of it subliminal," said Kay Kendall, interior designer and owner of Kay Kendall Interior Design. "Some people walk into a room and immediately have a sense of emotional attachment. And most of that is the result of as-sociations linked to childhood. Our homes should reflect who we are and how we like to feel. And color has an enormous effect on how we feel."

But what if red or tangerine or lavender - is out?

“Don't decorate because of a trend or use all soft, quiet colors because that's what you see in a magazine,” Kendall said. “Ultimately, you will be unhappy, because it's not who you are. Look at trends to see what's out there and to refresh what you have, to reflect your personality.”

The housing crisis, ongoing war and economic downturn have combined to shape Americans' color tastes. “We're searching for the color equivalent of mac and cheese: safe, traditional and comfort-ing,” she said. “But the pops of bright colors, from crimson to acid yellow, suggest that we're ultimately hopeful about the future.”

Neutrals are now, especially in larger purchases like cars, sofas or carpet. “For those big-ticket items, we'll make the safer choice such as neutrals, from rich gray to camel,” Kendall thinks. And, she continues, "We're using trendier colors, like acid green or amethyst, as accent pieces.”

Also, green continues to gain strength from its association with the growing shift toward eco-consciousness. It will show up in everything from fabrics to accessories to countertops.

Whatever your choice, using the help of a professional interior designer may save you plenty of time and headaches, and it’s much more affordable than you think. Want to just re-arrange? Kendall can come into your home and simply use what you already have for a fresh take on a room or your entire home. Call her today at (618) 567-6008 or email [email protected].

The first thing a person notices as they walk into your home is the floor covering whether it’s carpet or another surface adorned with an area rug or two. In fact, keeping carpets and rugs clean, and in good condition actually adds value to the home. If your carpet is dirty and stained, this will detract greatly from the rest of the home.

Because so much damaging dirt can accumulate in just a few months, carpet and rug manufacturers recommend their product be vacuumed on a regular basis and professionally cleaned every year.

In addition, when you spend the time to maintain your carpet, it will help protect and preserve its original sheen. Once you let your carpet become dirty, the original luster will be gone and it is very difficult to get it back.

Regularly cleaning your carpets and rugs is also a matter of good health as they are gathering places for all sorts of potentially harmful toxins and a dirty carpet can lead to allergies and asthma among other things.

Area Rugs Staging a Comeback With the current interior design trends as they are, wood and ceramic flooring are gaining in popular-ity. Made in all sizes, shapes, colors and materials, interior designers are recommending area rugs then as a focal point of a room’s style.

Of course – an area rug might just last a lifetime with proper care. Larry McQueen, owner of Carpet Care Plus, is pleased to offer Metro East residents a one-of-a-kind cleaning process plus pick up and delivery service. When Carpet Care Plus first views an area rug to clean, they inspect it for many things.

“First of all, every rug has a story,” McQueen said. “I have been attending many Rug Summits to have the knowledge of being able to identify exactly where a rug has originated right down to what village in the world it was made in. Handmade rugs can cost hundreds of dollars and if we can identify where it came from, it can actually be sent back to that place to be repaired perfectly if necessary.”

The staff will access the problem areas of the rug and then proceed with cleaning which includes dusting, cleaning and drying, and finishing. All of this does not take place in the home where they couldn’t possibly get to the underside and perform all of the thorough procedures they can do in their O’Fallon shop. There is free pickup and delivery within a certain distance.

Unique to the Metro East is the Wolverine Rug Duster – a powerful machine that is based on a 1930s system that literally beats the rug thus pushing out literally pounds of dirt before it is cleaned. This machine sets Carpet Care Plus apart from their competitors because of its sheer efficiency. In fact, they regularly clean the carpets of RVs, boats, busses, etc.

Following the Wolverine, the rug is then cleaned with CFR products of which Carpet Care Plus is a distributor, then hung up to dry, and finally finished with grooming, vacuuming and wrapping. McQueen pointed out that this is a nice service to use when moving. “Let us take care of your rugs and deliver to the new home fresh and ready for display.”

Did you know that your carpets, rugs and upholstery have a pH that must be balanced with the proper

chemicals to ensure the best cleaning? And don’t go trying to spot clean something without calling Carpet Care Plus first.

Certified in every service and product offered, Carpet Care Plus likes to quote prices that are published and stick to it - no bait and switch. In business since 2001, the company has admirable goals for new equipment to handle more quantity with the same quality.

Carpet Care Plus is located in O’Fallon at 121 Behrens Dr., Suite 1. Call (618) 632-0883 to schedule an appointment or your free estimate. In case of an emergency, call the 24-Hour Emergency Service at (618) 977-3380. Services offered are commercial, residential, upholstery, vehicles, area rugs, sales of spotting products, machine maintenance and emergency water removal.

Working for a carpenter through high school, Rick Boydte knew that was what

he wanted to do with his life. Born and raised in Belleville, his company – R&R Exteriors has been fixing up homes in St. Clair and Monroe counties for 25 years.

His services include any kind of exterior work such as roofing, siding, windows, decks, custom sun rooms, patio covers, concrete work and more. “My motto is I’ll do whatever it takes to make the customer happy,” he said. “If there’s a problem I keep going back until they’re happy.”

Having the highest rating a business can earn with the Better Business Bureau, Boydte has a few tips for those looking for a contractor:

1. Get a referral from someone you know.

2. Hire a contractor who specializes in the type of work you need done. Someone you hire to install wood flooring or to build a deck should be a carpentry contractor, while someone you hire to install recessed lighting in your kitchen should be an electrician.

3. Get at least three references for your contractor and call them. The contrac-tor will likely give you references who had positive experiences, so be sure to ask them specific questions about work-manship that are important to you.

4. Check with the Better Business Bureau to find out if complaints have ever been filed or are outstanding against the contractor.

5. Request a written estimate. Any contrac-tor who does not provide you with a writ-ten estimate should be crossed off your list immediately.

6. Sign a written contract. The contract should clearly spell out all the steps the contractor will take from beginning to end of your job, what supplies are included, the payment schedule and the time line for the project.

Boydte also offers free estimates, senior and military discounts plus customers in need of a roof can get a free upgrade on architecture shingles on jobs over $3,000. Need siding? Boydte gives customers free Tyvek wrap on all siding jobs.

Finally! Brenda Wagner, CEO of the Miracle League of Fairview Heights, got to use a shovel to dig up the first scoop of dirt to construct her five-year-long mission: a ballfield where the dreams of special needs kids will be brought to life through baseball, soccer, kickball and many other sports. “Every child deserves a chance to play ball,” she said.

Since 2005, The Fairview Heights Rotary Club – spearheaded by Wagner – has been striving to raise the funds necessary to build this complex that will have two ball fields and bleachers, concession stand, restrooms and parking lot. The community has fully supported this effort that will provide all kinds of activities for children with special needs. In fact, two very special donors – former Cardinals Mike Matheny and Kerry Robinson – have stepped up to the plate to bring this project to fruition.

Meanwhile, Wagner has secured other locations throughout the community for 75 kids to play bas-ketball and kickball, and go bowling until the field is actually constructed at Longacre Park. And they won’t be just any fields. The surfaces will be smooth and soft making it easy for children with walking devices or wheelchairs.

“The Miracle League has one rule and that is to have fun,” she said. “The league allows special needs kids ages 3 to 33 a chance to play sports regardless of their ability. These kids are told ‘no,’ so many times, but we will make it work for them.” Throughout the year, there are many opportunities to get involved with Miracle League of Fairview Heights. Please browse the web site at www.miracleleagueplaysball.com to learn more about The Miracle League.

Custom jeweler George Sharos loves his work because of the creativity he gets to expend every day. In fact, he is well-known not only for his specialized diamond and stone settings, but for utilizing other materials such as dinosaur bones, meteorites and petrified palm bark. Having found a passion for his craft at an early age, Sharos also likes to work with movement, as in diamonds that actually slide up and down in the setting.

Another specialty of Sharos’ is taking a client’s old jewelry, melt it down and start over. This is a terrific way to take those outdated earrings and bracelets at the bottom of the drawer and get something totally new and fresh. Creating such a jewel requires a close collaboration between the buyer and the jeweler to develop a striking design and translate it into a beautiful jewel. When helping a client create a custom piece, Sharos provides the expertise to assure that each of the following critical elements is achieved. First, he will work with you to develop a unique design that reflects the “wearer’s” taste and lifestyle as well as the buyer’s pocket book. From there he can locate and evaluate fine gemstones that will complement and enhance the design. “Sometimes the buyer might have their own gem or stone which I will be happy to work with,” he said. “Jewelry like this is always so special to the customer – it will carry a lifetime of sentiments to the customer.”

Olde World Jewelers offers high-quality diamonds and precious stones like sapphire and ruby, and amber, tourmaline crystal, bi-color quartz, tsavarite garnets, citrine and tanzanite. Or, you can let Sharos or his talented son Kyle “have fun” with sterling silver or gold, or other precious metal.

As the most popular time of the year for wedding proposals ap-proaches, Olde World will carry a wide range of weddings bands, engagements rings, pearls and more. Popular right now are the “new” vintage bridal collections and some of the more unusual wedding bands for gents. “If the bride or groom finds something they love in a magazine,” Sharos said, “they can bring in the picture and we will recreate it and possibly for a better price since we have our own equipment on site.”

Also, there is still time to have a one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry designed and hand crafted for the holidays – the perfect, one-of-a-kind gift. Body Blast!A Unique Approach to Weight Management

Utilizing HCG

Losing weight can be an overwhelming task for some and every person’s body is completely different. Thus, Ooh La La’s Weight Management and Wellness Programs – Body Blast! - are designed with each individual’s needs in mind when creating and monitoring their personal weight management program.

“There is a lot of information out there. We have made it easy by sorting through all of it and getting a plan together that works! One of the major differences with our programs is the use of prescription HCG. You don’t know what you’re getting when you buy HCG that is not a prescription, it might even be harmful,” said Dr. Kristen M. Jacobs, owner of Ooh La La Anti-Aging and Wellness Center. “As a physician, I specialize in preventive medicine and weight maintenance is a very important part of that.”

Fully supervised by Dr. Jacobs, Ooh La La’s HCG weight management program offers weekly appointments and staff support to ensure a smooth transition into a healthier lifestyle. Having to be accountable to someone else helps participants stay more motivated to achieve a significantly higher rate of completion and actually losing more weight.

“Several patients were asking me about HCG and I decided to at least look into it,” Dr. Jacobs said. “I wanted to know how 98% of participants were never hungry on this low calorie diet. I discovered the physiology was right on. We have over 200 patients on the weight loss program who have lost over 2,500 pounds since January! The success rate is unbelievable.”

In fact, Dr. Jacobs herself gave it a try and lost 8 pounds – though she already exercises regularly and eats a healthy diet – “I just wanted to know what it was like and I have to admit now that I am off of it, I felt better when I was on it.”

Interestingly, patients with other health issues discover their conditions are improved by taking HCG. Dr. Jacobs said patients will notice an improvement in sleep, skin and mood. Plus, they will have a stabilization of blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol, fewer arthritis symptoms, an improvement of psoriasis, peptic ulcers and hair loss.

“Of course, I can’t guarantee anything,” she said. “The success of a weight manage-ment program is really up to the individual, but my staff and I will do everything we can to guide them.”

Dr. Jacobs is a Board Certified Family Physician specializing in Aesthetic and Preventive Medicine, and Women's Health, and is accepting new patients. Ooh La La Anti-Aging and Wellness Center also of-fers a myriad of Aesthetic Services including Botox and Fillers, Physician Grade Skin Care, Laser Hair Removal, Laser Skin Resurfacing and Rejuvenation, and Chemical Peels as well as traditional Spa services such as Massage Therapy, Facials, Microdermabra-sion, and Dermaplaning. Ooh La La always offers complimentary consultations, schedule yours today to see what's right for you!

From STRUGGLING...1 out of 4 children struggle with reading and learning because of

undiagnosed vision problems.

Does Your Child...

...to SUCCESS!ELIMINATE DOUBT!

If your child has any of the above symptoms, he or she may have a 100% correctable vision-based learning problem. Children

who once struggled go from failure to success when these vision problems are treated. Call us today to schedule a Developmental Vision Evaluation.

Unger Eye Care

(618) 667-2020www.readingandvision.com

Whether your child works very hard but still gets a poor report card or

your child avoids reading and homework as much as possible, Unger Eye Care may be able to help.

When a child complains that he can’t see the board your immediate thought is to schedule an eye exam. But when your child brings home a poor report card, you should also consider that a sign that you need to schedule an eye exam.

Why an eye exam? When a child struggles with reading and nothing seems to help consistently it is a sign that a vi-sion problem is underlying your child’s difficulties. Does your child love being read to, but hates to read? Is he or she an “auditory learner”? These are signs of a vision problem.

The Learning Disabilities Association of America says that when you find a child who is struggling with learning that you should check for vision and hearing prob-lems. Unfortunately, most people incor-rectly assume there is nothing wrong with a child’s vision if he or she can see “20/20.” Dr. Tom Unger, optometrist with an office in Troy, said, “If you have a child who is struggling with reading and schoolwork it is vital that you understand that being able to see the letters on the eye chart is just one of over 20 visual skills critical to reading and learning.”

Children do not know how they are sup-posed to see so they rarely complain when they have difficulty seeing the words on the page. Therefore it becomes critical that you are aware of some of the

most obvious symptoms which indicate that a child could have a vision problem, including:

• Problems with tracking• Poor comprehension and

attention span• Loses place while reading• Points to words while reading• Avoids close work such as

reading• Reverses letters or words in

reading and writing• Homework takes FOREVER when

it shouldn’t

If your child has any of these issues, he or she may have an undiagnosed vision problem that is interfering with academic success. For more information visit: www.readingandvision.com or call 618-667-2020.

Since its inception a quarter century ago, NBCAM has been at the forefront of promoting awareness of breast cancer issues and has evolved along with the national dialogue on breast cancer. The third Friday in October each year is National Mammography Day. On this day, or throughout the month, women are encouraged to make a mammography appointment. There are very few restaurants in the whole St. Louis metro area that serve traditional and authentic German cuisine. Thus, those of us in the Metro East are so fortunate to have the beautifully appointed Oatman House Restaurant right here in Collinsville.

Featuring German and American cuisine in an historic landmark home, it is truly a unique destination restaurant. The home’s story is of Dr. Charles Oatman, a former drummer boy in the Civil War, who had this house built for his family in 1875. A classic example of Gothic Revival Architecture, the house - with its “gingerbread” trim - now stands in downtown Collinsville at the corner of East Main and Aurora.

With an emphasis on preserving the Victorian decor inside, the Oatman House offers visitors the opportunity to step back in time and enjoy the quaint atmosphere of an era gone by. And now, there is an inviting outdoor patio perfect for sunny fall days and cool evenings by the firepit.

The award-winning restaurant offers a dinner menu created each day by Chef Renee Kramer that includes authentic German sauerbraten, schweineschnitzel/yagerschnitzel, German sau-sage and sauerkraut, plus American favorites prime rib, ribeye steaks, grilled salmon, tilapia New Orleans and clam linguine. Lunch serves up bruschetta, quiche, salads and robust sandwiches. Kramer’s pastries are a must with every visit.

Celebrate with a true German beer like Paulaner lager, Warsteiner dunkel, Salvator doppelbock and Ayinger Oktober Fest-Marzen. There is also domestic beers, a nice wine list and a full bar.

“We also love to work with customers on special occasion parties,” said owner Sandy Rose. “Our restaurant seats up to 48 and of course the outdoor patio is a wonderful setting for any gathering.”The Oatman House invites you to experience Oktoberfest: 501 East Main Street in Collinsville (don’t worry about downtown road construction - it’s all complete); (618) 346-2326; www.oatmanhousetearoom.com. 10% Military Discount. 11AM-2PM, 4:30PM-8PM. Alton is recognized as one of the most haunted towns in Illinois. What is the most haunted place? Mineral Springs Mall. There are at least 6 ghosts that have been documented, researched and regular contacts made.

Many paranormal teams come to investigate the Alton area. The Mineral Springs research center interacts with other groups to compare experiences.

The Mineral Springs Paranormal Research team is also available to investigate private locations.

Walking Tours meet at Mineral Springs Mall at 301 E. Broadway in Alton and start with a lecture about the history of the building and Alton. We then go on an 8 block walk to 10-12 other haunted locations and actually go into a few. We always visit the slave tunnels under the old Enos Sanitarium. Upon returning to Mineral Springs, we tour the entire building, all ve levels, use investigative equipment (ghost hunting), do a seance, and end with a tarot card reading. This is a hands-on experience, we invite cameras and recorders. Tours last 3-1/2 to 4 hours.

Cemetery Tours are led by our hearse following a brief “wake” in the Crystal Room. After a tour and graveside history of the cemetery, a seance will be at the Lovejoy Monument. Upon returning to Mineral Springs Mall, there is a Tarot card reading and refreshments. Tour is about 3 to 3-1/2 hours. Call for group discounts.

Overnight stays - come “camp” in the haunted pool. Bring sleeping bags, air mattresses, reclining lawn chairs, folding cots blankets, pillows, whatever you feel comfortable with to sleep (if you can). Overnights include dinner and breakfast.

A spectacular surprise is waiting just a quick 45-minute drive east on Inter-state 70 from downtown St. Louis: the new Copper Dock Winery situated in a fantastic “Colorado-like” setting in rural Pocahontas, Ill.

Steven Dugan and his wife, Chris, have constructed their vision of the perfect spot to sip wine (over 100 different bottles) and enjoy the perfectly groomed landscape, lake and wooded grounds. So far the tranquil winery - featuring the trademark dock with a copper roof – restaurant and banquet facilities have been wildly successful.

Currently, there is outdoor seating for 325 (about 135-140 seats are right on the water) - “One minute there are 20 people and the next the chairs are filled!” Dugan said. In fact, they are already significantly expanding the kitchen, bar and indoor restaurant which should be completed by the time this issue is out. On top of that, they have wedding bookings up to next October already!

As a successful businessman and farmer, Dugan said he is always building something. “I like to keep myself busy,” he said, “and building is a creative outlet for me. I like the satisfaction of the end result.”

“Christine and I came out to this property and she loved it so much she was ready to move here,” he said. “Instead we decided on the winery – I will build it, she will run it.”

Of course, growing your own grapes and making your own wine takes years, so in the meantime they are offering an extensive wine list including those from around the US and the world. There is a wine for everyone at Copper Dock including some fun surprises like the Bin 36 Sauvignon Blanc from Chicago, the No. 99 Wayne Gretzky Cabernet Sauvignon from Canada and the “Wines that Rock” series includ-ing blends referencing The Police, Pink Floyd and The Rolling Stones! “When the time comes to have our own wine, we want it to be perfect, but until then we just want everyone to enjoy what we have created.” Dugan said.

In addition to wine, there is a full bar, wine tasting room, deli, and live music every weekend. The menu is highlighted by a wide range of appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches, pizzas and desserts.

The wedding/banquet facility has been carefully thought out with everything in place for an amazing event including audio/video equipment for presentations, buffet set up, dance floor, head table area, dressing tables for the bride and bridesmaids, etc. There will also be a romantic outdoor pavilion surrounded by fabulous landscaping and facing the 7-1/2 acre lake filled with white and black ducks. Speaking of the ducks, don’t be afraid to bring the kids – there is a kids’ menu and plenty of duck and fish food to keep them entertained on the dock.

Copper Dock is off Interstate 70 at Pocahontas (exit #36). Head north for ¼ mile until you see the giant copper grape sculpture. Call (618) 669-CORk or visit www.copperdockwinery.com. Open year round.
