Fairy Tale Cookbook

1.5.3.B: Develop content appropriate for the topic. Gather and organize information, incorporating

details relevant to the topic. Write a series of related sentences or paragraphs

of a fictional text as a whole. 1.9.3.A: Use media and technology resources for

directed and independent learning activities.

Prerequisites

Students are aware of fairy tales, such as one through popular television shows and movies

Example “Shrek” Students will know how to use the smart

board and smart technology Students will know how to use kidspiration

Instructional Objective

The main objective of this lesson plan is for students to learn about constructing a well-planned story, with all the key essential elements that every story needs. I as the teacher will teach them about what are the key essential parts to every story, and how should they properly be used to create the best story possible.

Instructional Procedures

(Before) Before telling the students what they are going to do for the day we will do a fun full classroom activity. Using the smart board I will put a blank open book on display.

I will ask the class what they think are the key essential elements of creating a fairy tale. I will give each student five minutes to brainstorm and jot down some notes. Then going around the room I will let each student go up to the smart board and write in our “ fairy tale book” what they think a fairy tale is made up of.

Before Continued At the end of the brainstorm, I will create a new blank

display on the smart board except for a picture of a crock-pot.

I will then introduce the 5 key terms that I want them to know about a fairy tale; each term will have its own picture to visually stimulate students. I will add each term/ picture (rising action, falling action, climax, plot, and setting) to the crock-pot, telling the students that this is the proper ingredients for a great fairy tale.

I will then pass out a sheet with all the definitions of each key element, which they will use as a reference to what each of there stories will need when they start to create their own.

During

I will show the class a video of one of their favorite movies “ Shrek” which is considered a modern day fairy tale.

Using the program Jing I will identify each of the 5 key elements and show them clips of each element so they can grasp a better understanding of rising action, falling action, plot, setting, and climax.

After showing them each clip I will pass out a worksheet with five new movie titles at the top.

Students will break up into groups based off of what worksheet they receive. The five movies are Cinderella, Snow White, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and The Little Mermaid.

Working in their groups for the next half an hour students will have to identify the 5 key elements of their specific fairy tale.

During Continued When each group has completed their worksheet and has

gotten it approved by the teacher, students will individually move to their designated computers to start working on creating an outline for their own unique fairy tale using the software Kidspiration.

Using Kidspiration each student should create a detailed “how to cook a story outline” of what his or her fairy tale should be made up of.

Each student will have to finish their outline and get it teacher approved, by me, before they can move onto writing up their own fairy tale. This part of the lesson should take up the remainder of the day.

After

This is a full day activity for the students, with a lot of writing and creativity.

To end the lesson, and the day I will have each student, if they want to, go to the front of the class and read their story out loud.

This lesson should be a lot of fun for every student, and it teaches him or her about the fundamental make-up of all stories.

 

Materials and Equipment

Smart Board, Kidspiration, Jing, group movie worksheet, paper, pencils, crayons, and creativity

Assesment/ Evaluation

I will determine if students have gained an understanding of what they have to do by the various activities I have set up for them.

A student will not be allowed to go onto the next phase of creating his or her story, with out completing the group movie fairy tale worksheet and the “how to cook a story recipe outline”

With each assessment of the worksheet and outline I will gain an understanding of where each student stands and his or her grasp of the subject matter.

Differentiation

Students with IEPS will be given individual attention, and will be granted extra time to finish the assignment if necessary.

Technology

Students will need to know how to use Smart Tech and Smartboard technology as well as the computer software Kidspiration.

The teacher will use the computer software Jing to show the class popular clips of their favorite movies, and give them a better understanding of the 5 key elements of a fairy tale (rising action, falling action, climax, plot, and setting).

 

Self Assesment

To self assess my self I will ask a colleague of mine to stand in the classroom while I teach, having him or her write down any positive or negative things that I am doing, and after the lesson discuss what I can improve on.
