I. Picture Imaging

• Show a picture to Visualize and Verbalize.

• Use structure words to question the child.

• Have the child tell you the main idea (or title) of the picture.

• Student describes the picture.

• Check through the Structure Words for detailed imagery.

II. Sentence by Sentence

• Read a sentence to your child or have the child read the sentence to you.

• Use structure words to create a picture of the meaning of the sentence.

• Continue creating pictures with subsequent sentences (without structure words).

• Have the child summarize and tell you the main idea (or title) of the passage.

• Read a sentence to your child or have your child read a sentence to you.

Sentence by Sentence: Step 2

• Question your child to develop detailed imagery using the Structure Words.

I told you…

Did you tell me what, size, color, etc…?

Then check through the Structure Words.Continue describing other sentences but without the structure words to note what changes in the images.

Sentence by Sentence: Step 3

• Encourage your child to give a Picture Summary for each sentence.

Here I saw….

A Picture Summary is a retelling of each image that the child has pictured in his/her mind.

Sentence by Sentence: Step 4

• Encourage your child to give a Word Summary then state

the Main Idea. Pretend your friends just walked in the room. Tell them what the story is about.

The Word Summary is a detailed summary of the passage.

The Main Idea is a single sentence explaining what the passage is mostly about.

III. Multi-sentence by Multi-sentence

• Read 2-3 sentences (or have the child read) at once.

• Have the child describe the picture he/she visualizes in his/her mind for the meaning of those sentences.

• Question the child briefly to add details if needed.

• Have the child summarize and tell you the main idea (or title) of the passage.

IV. Paragraph by Paragraph

• Read a complete paragraph (or have the child read the paragraph) out loud.

• Have the child tell you what the paragraph is mostly about (summary).

• Do the same with each following paragraph.

• Have the child tell you the main idea of the entire passage.
