II. Sentence by Sentence

• Read a sentence to your child or have the child read the sentence to you.

• Use structure words to create a picture of the meaning of the sentence.

• Continue creating pictures with subsequent sentences (without structure words).

• Have the child summarize and tell you the main idea (or title) of the passage.

• Encourage your child to give a Picture Summary for each sentence.

A Picture Summary is a retelling of each image that the child has pictured in his/her mind.

Sentence by Sentence: Step 4

• Encourage your child to give a Word Summary then state

the Main Idea. Pretend your friends just walked in the room. Tell them what the story is about.

The Word Summary is a detailed summary of the passage.

The Main Idea is a single sentence explaining what the passage is mostly about.

III. Multi-sentence by Multi-sentence

• Read 2-3 sentences (or have the child read) at once.

• Have the child describe the picture he/she visualizes in his/her mind for the meaning of those sentences.

• Question the child briefly to add details if needed.

• Have the child summarize and tell you the main idea (or title) of the passage.

• Read a complete paragraph (or have the child read the paragraph) out loud.

• Have the child tell you the main idea of the entire passage.
