The UCAS Process
Applications for all Nursing, Midwifery or Operating Department Practice Courses offered by Universities in the United Kingdom are normally submitted online at UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) at www.ucas.ac.uk.
The deadline for “on time” applications is 15th January 2010.
Late applications may not be processed.
No Direct Applications and/or Curriculum Vitae’s will be accepted.

Personal Statement

Personal Details
This section asks you to provide your:
Name
Date of Birth
Address
Disabilities
School, College or University Education
Course Choice
Qualifications Completed or Pending
This section asks you to provide your:
Qualifications Completed (i.e. GCSEs, A-Levels, Access etc)
The Date the Qualification was completed.
The Grade Awarded
Qualifications Pending (i.e. GCSEs, A-Levels, Access etc)
The Date the Qualification is due to be completed.
Personal Statement
The Personal Statement should consider your core qualities and skills including:
Your interest in people and their health
Awareness of the role (Nurse, Midwife, ODP)
Awareness of the course requirements
Your motivation to become a Nurse, Midwife or ODP
Academic ability: Literacy and Numeracy skills
Commitment
Mature attitude

The final section of the application asks for a reference to be provided. Suitable referees include:
Current or Previous Employer
Current or Previous Educational Institution
Current or Previous Voluntary Work
Friends, Family Members or Neighbours are not acceptable.
Applications Dos and Donts
Do’s
Give a complete record of your past academic and/or employment history.
Provide an appropriate referee, whom must be able to comment on your work and/or academic capacity [attendance, commitment and general health and so on]
Take your time composing your personal statement which should summarise your understanding of the role and information relevant to the course you are applying for including personal attributes.
Declare any disabilities.

Leave ‘gaps’ in your employment history.
Forget to include any pending qualifications being used to gain access to the course within the appropriate section and/or personal statement.

Typical Interview
If your application is successful at shortlisting, then you will be invited to attend an Interview Day. This day will vary according to the course but may include:

Tour of School
Group Problem Solving Activity
Individual Interview
Individual Interviews will consist of a member of academic staff from the course you have applied as well as a member of clinical staff from a local NHS Trust.
Dispelling the Myths

That places are only offered after a successful interview.
That you will be required to complete a satisfactory Police and Health Check if offered a place.
That applications will not be processed unless evidence of recent academic study completed within the last 5 years is indicated in your application.
That applications will not be processed unless you have met or are likely to meet the minimum academic entry requirements.
That as a student you will complete clinical placements which involves travel across the whole region.
