Soil Erosion- It is the process wherein the soil is brought down from high to low land by agents like water and wind.

Page 11: Factors affecting soil formation

Soil Erosion-It occurs often in steeper land areas, much soil is eroded when heavy rains and strong winds occur.

Soil Pollution

- Is the destruction of Earth’s healthy and productive soil by the addition of undesirablematerials.

Page 13: Factors affecting soil formation

Causes of Soil Pollution--People cut down , burn trees in the mountains (loggers and kaingineros)-Loggers go to mountains to cut down trees. Most of them do not replace the trees that they cut, so mountains become denuded.

Page 14: Factors affecting soil formation

Causes of Soil Pollution-- When mountain is denuded , there are no more roots to absorb rainwater or to hold the soil. During heavy rains, water rushes down and causes floods in lowlands. The soil in the mountain is also carried down or eroded to the low lands and deposited in rivers, streams , and oceans.-- Too much erosion can carry away soil that we need.

Page 15: Factors affecting soil formation

Causes of Soil Pollution1. Chemicals and wastes from factories,

hospitals, farms are dumped into the soil.

-These chemicals and wastes make soil poisonous for plants, animals and people.

Page 16: Factors affecting soil formation

Causes of Soil Pollution2.Garbage or solid

wastes from homes and wet market , which are not disposed of properly

Page 17: Factors affecting soil formation

Causes of Soil Pollution3.Excessive use of fertilizers

and insecticides in farming:

- to increase their harvest

- To get rid of pest

- These chemicals destroy organisms that help renew the soil. The soil becomes barren or unproductive

Page 18: Factors affecting soil formation

Causes of Soil Pollution4.Wastes from mines

-metals are processed so they can be used to make jewelry, wires , coins , and other metallic objects

-metal processing produces wastes water that flows into the land and rivers . Soil becomes damaged and plant cannot grow in it.

Effects of Soil Pollution

1.Effects of pollution on plantsa. young seedlings decay even before they appear above the soil surface.

Page 20: Factors affecting soil formation

Effects of Soil Pollution

b. roots decay or wither . This interferes with the supply of water in the stems and leaves so the plants eventually die.

Page 21: Factors affecting soil formation

Effects of Soil Pollutionc. plants will wither and die since polluted soil interferes with the supply of nutrients needed for plants growth and development.

Page 22: Factors affecting soil formation

Effects of Soil Pollution2. Effects on humans and

other animals- human depend and other animals depend on plants for food. If plants are affected by pollution, people and other animals can also get sick and may eventually die.- it can cause famine

Page 24: Factors affecting soil formation

If we want to continue enjoying abundant food , lumber , and other plant products, we need to take care of our soil.

Without soil , there will be no trees and plants.

Page 25: Factors affecting soil formation

There is a need for soil conservation.

Soil conservation is caring for and using soil wisely to prevent soil erosion and to maintain the quality of the soil.

Page 26: Factors affecting soil formation

Soil Conservation1. Plant trees

- planting trees especially along the slopes , to reduce soil erosion. The roots grow deep into the soil; thus , the soil particles become firmer and stronger.

Page 27: Factors affecting soil formation

Soil Conservation2.Dispose garbage proeprly

-segregate a.biodegradable(discarded food,fruits and vegetables)

b.non-biodegradable –garbage that may be re-used or recycled(plastic ,bottle, and cans

Page 28: Factors affecting soil formation

Soil Conservation3.Use alternative planting strategies

a. plant in alternating rows(strip cropping)

- it gives soil natural covering

Page 29: Factors affecting soil formation

Soil Conservationb. it gives the soil time to rest

-farmers do not plant continuously

- skip one planting season before planting the next crop

Page 30: Factors affecting soil formation

Soil Conservationc. avoid planting the same crop every year

- to restore the minerals lost in the soil

Page 31: Factors affecting soil formation

Soil Conservation4. Help minimize chemical pollutants

in soil

- join clubs of environmentalists

- inform factory owners about the ills of polluting soil

-give away leaflets urging the factory owners to stop polluting the soil

Page 32: Factors affecting soil formation

Soil Conservation5.Avoid excessive use of chemical

fertilizers

- make the soil extremely acidic or salty

- condition is harmful to plant life

Write one proposed way on how to take care or conserve the soil.
