Page 2: Facial Recognition

Facial recognition system - Traditional

1 Some facial recognition algorithms identify facial features by extracting

landmarks, or features, from an image of the subject's face. For

example, an algorithm may analyze the relative position, size, and/or

shape of the eyes, nose, cheekbones, and jaw. These features are then

used to search for other images with matching features.

Facial recognition system - 3-dimensional recognition

1 Three-dimensional data points from a face vastly improve the precision of facial

recognition

1 to treat expressions as isometries A company called Vision Access

created a firm solution for 3D facial recognition. The company was later

acquired by the biometric access company Bioscrypt Inc. which

developed a version known as 3D FastPass.

Facial recognition system - Notable users and deployments

1 The London Borough of Newham, in the United Kingdom|UK, previously trialled a facial recognition system

built into their borough-wide Closed-circuit television|CCTV system.

Facial recognition system - Notable users and deployments

1 The German Federal Police use a facial recognition system to allow voluntary

subscribers to pass fully automated border controls at Frankfurt Rhein-Main international

airport. Subscribers need to be European Union or Switzerland|Swiss citizens. Since

2005 the Federal Criminal Police Office (Germany)|German Federal Criminal Police

Office offers centralized facial recognition on mugshot images for all German police

agencies.

Facial recognition system - Notable users and deployments

1 The Australian Customs Service has an automated border processing

system called SmartGate that uses facial recognition. The system

compares the face of the individual with the image in the Biometric passport|e-passport microchip, certifying that the holder of the passport is the rightful owner.

Facial recognition system - Notable users and deployments

1 The Tocumen International Airport in Panama operates an airport-wide

surveillance system using hundreds of live Facial Recognition cameras to identify wanted individuals passing

through the airport.

Facial recognition system - Additional uses

1 In addition to being used for security systems, authorities have found a number of other applications for facial recognition systems. While

earlier post September 11 attacks|9/11 deployments were well publicized trials, more recent

deployments are rarely written about due to their covert nature.

Facial recognition system - Additional uses

1 At Super Bowl XXXV in January 2001, police in Tampa Bay, Florida used

Viisage facial recognition software to search for potential criminals and

terrorists in attendance at the event. 19 people with minor criminal

records were potentially identified.

Facial recognition system - Additional uses

1 In the 2000 presidential election, the Mexican government employed facial recognition software to prevent voter

fraud

Facial recognition system - Additional uses

1 There are also a number of potential uses for facial recognition that are currently being

developed

Facial recognition system - Additional uses

1 Facial recognition technology is already implemented in the iPhoto application for

Macintosh.

Facial recognition system - Additional uses

1 Because of certain limitations of fingerprint recognition systems,

nowadays facial recognition systems are finding market penetration as

Attendance monitoring alternatives.

Facial recognition system - Embedded Face Recognition Systems

1 With the recent days advancement in Embedded technology, many embedded Facial recognition

products are available which though have limitation of number of users it

can handle (because of memory limitation) gives performance almost

similar to desktop counterparts.

Facial recognition system - Comparative study

1 However, questions have been raised on the effectiveness of facial

recognition software in cases of railway and airport security.

Facial recognition system - Weaknesses

1 On January 18th Japanese researchers created a privacy visor

that uses nearly infrared light to make the face underneath it

unrecognizable to facial recognition software.

Facial recognition system - Effectiveness

1 Not once, as far as the police know, has Newham's automatic facial

recognition system spotted a live target

Facial recognition system - Privacy Issues

1 This fundamentally changes the dynamic of day-to-day privacy by

enabling any marketer, government agency, or random stranger to

secretly collect the identities and associated personal information of

any individual captured by the facial recognition system.

Facial recognition system - Early development

1 Facial recognition software used to have to rely on a 2D image with the

person almost directly facing the camera. Now, with FaceIt, a 3D image can be compared to a 2D

image by choosing 3 specific points off of the 3D image and converting it

into a 2D image using a special algorithm that can be scanned through almost all databases.

Face detection - Facial recognition

1 Face detection is used in biometrics, often as a part of (or together with) a

facial recognition system. It is also used in video surveillance, human

computer interface and image database management.

Paper wasp - Facial recognition

1 Recent research has discovered paper wasps have facial recognition abilities

comparable to humans.M. J. Sheehan E. A. Tibbetts (2011). Specialized Face Learning Is Associated with Individual Recognition in Paper Wasps. Science. 334:1272-1275. One recent study conducted at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor showed paper wasps have the same facial recognition abilities

common to humans or chimps.
