Rain/Wind

Powertex fabric is highly breathable, wind-and-waterproof, water repellent and durable; it is also light, soft and has a comfortable feel for the wearer, and with all these features, offers an excellent price/quality ratio. During aerobic activities, the Powertex membrane draws away from the body the moisture that is generated and evacuates it, distributing it on the fabric surface, reducing internal condensation and making the speed of the evaporation a lot faster; at the same time it prevents outside water to penetrate, therefore keeping the wearer warm, dry and comfortable. Powertex fabrics are available in two, two and a half, and three layers

Water Resistance How it Affects Warmth in Wet Conditions• PrimaLoft® fibers have a proprietary treatment that are permanently cured onto the

fibers.• The treatment dramatically reduces the amount of moisture the fibers can adsorb,

while at the same time changing the characteristics of the fibers so they physically repel water molecules.

• The microscopic fiber size of PrimaLoft® insulation cre ates a very tight surface ten-sion that causes water molecules to bead up on the surface of the insulation.

• PrimaLoft® fibers adsorb approximately 100–250% weight in water while typical polyester insulations gain from 400–1,000% their weight in water.

• When fibers adsorb moisture, they conduct heat away from the body much faster than dry fibers. Because PrimaLoft® fibers adsorb very little moisture, PrimaLoft® insulation maintains the highest percentage of warmth when wet over competitive insulations.

Why Was PrimaLoft® Developed?- In the 1980’s, the US Army commissioned Albany International Corp. to develop a water

resistant synthetic alternative to down. Today, PrimaLoft® is the premier supplier of insulation to the U.S. military, providing them with a tactical advantage under extreme wet and cold conditions.

- PrimaLoft® is now recognized globally as the benchmark in performance insulation.

Engineered for Superior PerformanceFour key features that differentiate PrimaLoft® from all other synthetic insulations:WARMER Proprietary blend of small diameter fibers trap more air to insulateDRIER Special finishes and small diameter fibers make PrimaLoft® insulation water resistantSOFTER Finer diameter fibers and proprietary finish make PrimaLoft® insulation ultra softMORE COMPRESSIBLE Smaller diameter fibers allow PrimaLoft® insulation to compress into a smaller space

Thermal performance describes how well insulation traps and retains warmth.- Thermal performance is measured in CLO- One Clo represents the amount of insulation required to keep a resting person warm in an indoor room at 70°F (21.1°C).

DOWN – natural, light and snugly warm

Down is an underlayer of fine feathers found in water birds such as geese and ducks. A purely natural product, down has some amazing characteristics. Light as a snowflake, down protects from the cold, yet at the same time is extremely compressible. No other material achieves a comparable level of insulation at such a low weight. On top of that, down products can be folded up very small because of their great elasticity. A thorough shaking quickly restores the original shape. Top quality down thus has a decisive edge over synthetic solutions, and is unbeatable when it comes to tough demands. Here at SALEWA, goose down is essential for a large part of our mountain sports collection – both in the apparel and equipment ranges.

In recent years environmentalists and animal welfare activists have uncovered new practices that contravene proper treatment and welfare of animals. Many animal welfare organisations criticise above all what is called live-plucking, a practice where the animal’s feathers are plucked before moulting begins.

SALEWA is committed to the fair and proper handling of all the natural resources which we use. We take pains to ensure that our down jackets and down sleeping bags are filled solely with top quality down which has been obtained by fair methods. To ensure that our down complies with the high requirements of quality and sustainability, we have defined strict guidelines in our “Down and feather sourcing and production assurance standard” (DFS). These quality requirements are part of our Conditions of Purchase contracts that every supplier must sign before we work with them. Our quality management team checks adherence to the guidelines on an ongoing basis. We thus bar the use of down obtained from ‘live-plucking’ or from geese used in foie gras production. We use exclusively white down, because grey geese are being increasingly used for fattening to produce foie gras.

DURASTRETCH fabrics are a classic in mountaineering apparel; though extremely comfortable and lightweight, they are very resistant to abrasion and rips, and are truly made to be durable. Most of the DURASTRETCH fabrics in this collection are recommended for the hole year, since their inner structure quickly wicks away sweat.

Fibres with one channel Fibres with four channels

The POLARLITE brand is the symbol of Salewa’s long experience and enthusiasm for fleece. The POLARLITE range includes products of various weights and characteristics (stretch, microfiber, body-mapping, printed shirt fabrics) to meet all the demands of high-altitude outdoor activities.

Polarlite flannel: the new mountaineering shirt

Our shirts are very light and warm. The material feels comfortable against the skin, is easy to care for and fast-drying. Polarlite flannel gets its characteristics from the hollow fibres used in its manufacture.

Polyester hollow fibre is a synthetic fibre which is manufactured with microscopic air channels running through the filaments. This gives it great insulating properties.

Through the process of evolution, the polar bear has adapted to life in icy conditions. Its white fur lets sunlight penetrate to the black skin underneath. At the same time, the micron-fine air ducts through the interior of each hair capture and retain the warmth. Air has great insulating properties, and so the bear’s body is protected from the cold. The idea of hollow fibres was developed by imitating the hairs in a polar bear’s fur. In the course of production, synthetic fibres such as polyester are pressed through a mould before they solidify. The more air that is enclosed, the better the insulating properties. The fibres are mostly between 15 and 20 microns thick, with several ducts running through. The highest insulating properties are however achieved with hollow fibres that feature one single large duct.

What are the benefits of Polygiene®?• Polygiene® inhibits the growth of microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi that cause odor.• Your garments stay Fresh – Polygiene® inhibits the growth of odor-causing bacteria. Odor develops when bacteria settles into the fabric, mixes with sweat and multiplies.• Hygienic – Less bacteria and fungi in footwear, wetsuits and gear helps reduce tinea infections, such as athlete’s foot.• Environmentally friendly - Polygiene®-treated clothing can be worn for longer periods of time before laundering is required. Therefore less energy, less water and less detergent are used.

When traveling or hiking, you can pack less clothing and travel light with less luggage.• Longer lifetime – Prolongs garment, footwear and gear lifetime by eliminating the bacteria that break down synthetic fibers.• Polygiene® treatment is guaranteed to last the lifetime of the garment, footwear or gear.

What is Polygiene® and how does it work?• Polygiene® is based on natural silver salt made from recycled silver• Silver salt is naturally present both in water (drinking water as well as sea water) and in the soil.• Polygiene® particles have a large amount of silver ions per surface area. Due to the structure of the particles, very small amounts of silver are required. Treating 5,000 garments or approxi-

mately 1,000 kilos of fabric requires the same amount of silver as one or two silver rings.• Polygiene® is applied to the fabric during the finishing stage at the same time as other treatments. This helps minimize impact on the environment because additional energy or water is not

required.

Safe next to your skin• Polygiene® is active only on the fabric surface and does not interfere with the ski’s natural bacterial flora.• Polygiene® particles are more than 100 times larger than nanosilver particles and therefore are too large to pass through the skin. According to scientific research, nanosilver particles can

penetrate the skin barrier and interfere with the skin’s natural bacterial flora.• Polygiene® has its heritage in the healthcare sector, and Polygiene® technology is approved for use on open wounds. It is therefore safe for use next to the skin, even for people with eczema

and foot blisters.

• HHL Technology Vital Protection is a unique, long lasting fabric finish that has been designed to provide essential protection against mosquitoes, midges and other nasty, biting insects.• This innovative technology works by repelling insects to prevent nasty, itchy bites – assisting in the avoidance of tropical diseases such as Malaria, West Nile Virus and other vector transmitted

diseases whilst remaining kind on the skin and fabric. • It is independently proven to be both non-sensitising and non-irritant.• Vital Protection is independently proven to significantly reduce bites from annoying insects by up to 90% and is 90% effective at repelling blood feeding insects. It reduces mosquito landings

by up to 45%.• Independent testing has demonstrated some level of protection for areas around the treated garment – uncovered parts should however always be protected.• HHL Technology is synergistic, the unique selling feature of our technology being that the efficacy of low doses of active ingredients are accelerated, ensuring real functionality and durability

to our customers whilst using minimal amounts of product.• This highly effective, long lasting, dual action technology also inhibits odours and common bacteria – ensuring fresher fabrics and more hygienic and durable garments. • New clothing is protected from staining, discolouration and degradation caused by microbes – helping keep purchases looking newer and cleaner for longer, wash after wash. The effects

of Vital Protection are extremely durable and long lasting.• Vital Protection is flexible and versatile and can be applied to any fabric type. It is environmentally friendly, biodegradable, safe to use and actually improves fabric handling. It is not Nano

technology and there is no risk of volatile compounds.• Vital Protection can help you remain safe, healthy and hygienic, no matter where your travels take you!• www.hhltechnology.org/vital-protection

DRY’TON is easy-care, durable and resistant, and has the feel of natural fabrics. It is extremely functional, as it makes moisture move quickly along the length of its fibers and evaporate more efficiently, and it eliminates body moisture very rapidly. Therefore it protects the body from overheating during physical activity and from chilling after the action has ceased.

Bamboo:

Bamboo fabric has a natural sheen and softness that feels and drapes like silk but is less expensive and more durable.

Bamboo clothing is easy to launder in a clothes washer and dryer.

Because of the smooth and round structure of its fibers, bamboo clothing is soft and non-irritating, even to sensitive skin. Some people with chemical sensitivities can not tolerate bamboo clo-thing. We are not sure if this intolerance is due to the intrinsic nature of bamboo but it more likely because of other chemicals added or used during the manufacturing and finishing processes of the clothing.

Bamboo is naturally anti-bacterial and anti-fungal supposedly because of a bacteriostatis agent unique to bamboo plants called “bamboo kun” which also helps bamboo resist harboring odors. “Kun” is also sometimes spelled “kunh”. The bamboo kun in bamboo fabric stops odor-producing bacteria from growing and spreading in the bamboo cloth allowing bamboo clothing to be more hygienic and to remain fresher smelling.

Bamboo clothing is hypoallergenic.

Bamboo is highly absorbent and wicks water away from the body 3 to 4 times faster than cotton. In warm, humid and sweaty weather, bamboo clothing helps keep the wearer drier, cooler and more comfortable and doesn’t stick to the skin.

The structure of bamboo fibers make bamboo fabrics more breathable and thermal regulating than cotton, hemp, wool or synthetic fabrics.

Bamboo clothing is naturally more wrinkle-resistant than cotton, and while it might still require ironing after washing, bamboo fabric can be ironed at a lower temperature than cotton. Shrinkage during washing and drying is minimal at warm temperatures.

Bamboo fibers and fabrics absorb dyes faster and more thoroughly than cotton, modal and viscose with better color clarity. Bamboo fabrics do not need to be mercerized to improve their luster and dye-ability like cotton requires.

Bamboo the plant and also bamboo the fabric can rate high as an environmentally friendly and renewable resource:

Bamboo grows rapidly and naturally without any pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers.

Bamboo clothing (both mechanically and chemically manufactured) is 100% biodegradable and can be completely decomposed in the soil by micro-organisms and sunlight without decompo-sing into any pollutants such as methane gas which is commonly produced as a by-product of decomposition in landfills and dumps.

Growing bamboo improves soil quality and helps rebuild eroded soil. The extensive root system of bamboo holds soil together, prevents soil erosion, and retains water in the watershed.

Bamboo grows naturally without the need for agricultural tending and large diesel exhaust-spewing tractors to plant seeds and cultivate the soil.

Bamboo plantations are large factories for photosynthesis which reduces greenhouse gases. Bamboo plants absorb about 5 times the amount of carbon dioxide (a primary greenhouse gas) and produces about 35% more oxygen than an equivalent stand of trees.

Bamboo fabrics and clothing can be manufactured and produced without any chemical additives although eco-certification such as Oeko-Tex is necessary to insure that the manufacturing and finishing processes are healthy.

Currently, there are no known genetically modified organisms (GMO) variants of bamboo. Let’s hope it stays that way.

SALEWA USES ZIPPERS FROM:

-100% Polypropylene worsted spun yarn- Excellent moisture transport- Low thermal conductivity- Highly abrasion resistant- dirt and stain resistant- odor-resistant

- excellent thermo-insulating capacity- excellent moisture transport to support a healthy

microclimate on the skin, both for summer and winter seasons

- extremely lightweight, colourfast and durable- a naturally “bacteriostatic” fibre, it reduces the risk

of irritation, allergies and rashes, as well as redu-cing odours

- Pittards Oiltac: grip-enhanced, treated leather- limits water uptake into the fibre structure, thus

guaranteeing excellent tactile sensitivity under the most adverse conditions

- treated to prevent the absorption of moisture, in-cluding sweat into the glove

Dri-Release Cotton:- 85% polyester / 15% cotton:- function with comfortable cotton touch- Removes perspiration fast- Dries 4x faster than cotton- FreshGuard prevents odor

Dri-Release Wool:- 88% polyester / 12% wool- Warmer than 100% wool- No iritation on skin- Reduces clammy feeling against the skin- FreshGuard prevents odor
