Introduction ANSI/TIA-942 is a quality standard for data centres that represents worldwide consensus from industry leaders on data centre design and build. TIA (Telecommunications Industry Association) is the leading trade association representing the global information and communications technology (ICT) industry through standards development, policy initiatives, business opportunities, market intelligence and networking events. TIA is accredited by ANSI (American National Standards Institute) as a "Standards Developing Organisation” (SDO). The ANSI/TIA-942 Conformity Audit conducted by EPI provides an extensive and meticulous assessment for conformity to the requirements of the standard involving over 2,600 criteria encompassing Architectural, Electrical, Mechanical, Telecommunication, Security and Safety. The audit helps verify whether your mission critical infrastructure is aligned to your business requirements. Why ANSI/TIA-942? ANSI/TIA-942 is by far the most popular standard when it comes to data centre design. Independent research has shown that 78% of data centre operators/owners use the ANSI/TIA-942 standard as the basis for their data centre design. Designers, operators and owners of data centres stated, among others, a number of key reasons: ANSI/TIA-942 is the most popular standard because it is a real and comprehensive standard. ANSI/TIA-942 is an open standard available to all. It provides clear and detailed guidance for designers, and provides great transparency for data centre operators/owners on the requirements for their data centres depending on the rating level chosen. ANSI/TIA-942 is issued by a non-profit standards issuing body. ANSI/TIA-942 covers all aspects of the physical data centre including, but not limited to; site location planning, architecture, electrical, mechanical, telecommunications, fire suppression, security requirements, etc. ANSI/TIA-942 consulting and audits can be performed by a variety of independent organisations, there is no single-vendor lock-in. IntroductionANSI/TIA-942 is a quality standard for data centres that represents worldwide consensus from industry leaders on data centre design and build.

Why ANSI/TIA-942?ANSI/TIA-942 is by far the most popular standard when it comes to data centre design. Independent research has shown that 78% of data centre operators/owners use the ANSI/TIA-942 standard as the basis for their data centre design.

Designers, operators and owners of data centres stated, among others, a number of key reasons:

• ANSI/TIA-942 is the most popular standard because it is a real and comprehensive standard.

• ANSI/TIA-942 is an open standard available to all. It provides clear and detailed guidance for designers, and provides great transparency for data centre operators/owners on the requirements for their data centres depending on the rating level chosen.

• ANSI/TIA-942 is issued by a non-prot standards issuing body.

• ANSI/TIA-942 covers all aspects of the physical data centre including, but not limited to; site location planning, architecture, electrical, mechanical, telecommunications, re suppression, security requirements, etc.

• ANSI/TIA-942 consulting and audits can be performed by a variety of independent organisations, there is no single-vendor lock-in.

• ANSI/TIA-942 audits are one of the most cost eective quality assurance audits.

Audit ProcessThe EPI Certication Audit is based on ISO 19011 methodology. Below is an overview on some key activities of the audit process.

There are two distinct ‘technical phases’ in the audit process which are detailed below.

DCDV - Data Centre Design Validation The objective of the DCDV phase is to ensure that the proposed design drawings for new-build or ‘as-built’ drawings of existing data centres, are complete and that the design (on paper) meets the requirements of the standard. It is an in-depth verication of the design drawings, compared against the rating levels described in the ANSI/TIA-942. This phase is especially important for a data centre before the build to ensure conformity to the standard once the site has been built. The outcome is a comprehensive report indicating the non-conformities and high level suggestions for improvements. The scope is limited to an osite review of design plans and drawings.

The objective of the DCCC phase is to verify the data centre has been implemented in conformity to the validated designs in the DCDV phase and the requirements specied in the ANSI/TIA-942. This phase comprises of an on-site audit of the physical data centre facilities  against the rating levels described in the ANSI/TIA-942. The outcome is a comprehensive report indicating non-conformities (if any). Once all the non-conformities are addressed, a “Conformity Certicate” will be issued and the data centre will be listed on the ANSI/TIA-942 website (www.tia-942.org).

Certication Life CycleThe certication audit is based on ISO 19011 methodology and the validity of the certicate is three years. In order to upkeep the certication, the customer will need to undergo a yearly surveillance audit and a re-certication audit at the end of the third year.
