It will cover the following topics: • An introduction to Formula 1; • A look at why aerodynamics is so important to modern-day F1 cars; • Discussion of the design requirements for a current F1 car, including a basic introduction to car aerodynamics, how the relative performance of designs are assessed, and contrasts with aerospace; • A brief look at the tools used to design and assess the cars, together with some detailed examples from current F1 cars. Over time he progressed up through the organisation to the role of “Capability Leader for Military Airframe R&D”, in which he led the UK MOD’s main research programme on aerodynamics, as well as providing consultancy to Airbus, Boeing and Northrop-Grumman. After 15 years of working for the UK MOD, Steve moved to the Renault F1 Team in 2009. He currently holds the role of “Head of Full-Size Car CFD” within the Lotus F1 Team, in which he has responsibility for the design and assessment of all non-standard aero development items. In 1999, Steve won the RAeS “Design and Development” prize, and is currently a Chartered Engineer, a Member of the RAeS and a Senior Member of the AIAA.
