Dear Parishioners and Friends of Ascension,

I’m very grateful to all the members of the Finance

Committee for all of the work they do, particularly all the

work that was done preparing for last weekend’s

presentation. We should feel particularly blessed that our

parish (and school) remains open. (A few additional

closings will be announced this weekend.) It must be said

again that parishes that are to remain open are expected to

be financially self-sustaining. While the presentation of the

Finance Committee was not planned to coincide with the

announcement about additional parish closures and

mergers, their presentation couldn’t have been more timely.

I’m hoping that everyone will be responsive to their appeal

so that Ascension parish will continue as a diverse and

inviting parish well into the future.

Last week, we celebrated Catholic Schools week. Today, I

would like to call your attention to a Catholic elementary

school fair that will take place next Sunday, February 12,

2017 from 1:00p.m. to 2:30p.m. This event will take place

at Cristo Rey High School which is located at 112 E. 106th

street between Lexington and Park Avenue. The purpose is

to invite families of prospective Pre-K through eighth grade

students to learn more about the benefits of a values-based

Catholic education. At this fair, families will have an

opportunity to visit with principals and school

representatives. They will receive a step-by-step Guide to

the admissions and financial assistance process. They will

also get help with completing and submitting their online

applications right at the fair. Ascension school will be

represented at this elementary school fair along with the

schools of Our Lady Queen of Martyrs, Saint Elizabeth,

Incarnation, Saint Rose of Lima, Our Lady of Lourdes,

Saint Charles Borromeo, Corpus Christi, St. Paul, and Saint

Ann. Admissions are now open for the 2017-18 academic

year.

PASTOR’S LETTER NOTAS DEL PASTOR

Queridos Feligreses y Amigos de la Ascensión,

Les estoy muy agradecido a todos los miembros del Comité

de Finanzas por todo el trabajo que se hizo en preparación

para la presentación del fin de semana pasado. Nos

debemos sentir particularmente bendecidos que nuestra

parroquia (y escuela) permanece abierta. (Unos cuantos

otros cierres serán anunciados este fin de semana.) Debe

ser dicho de nuevo que se espera que parroquias que vayan

a permanecer abiertas sean auto-suficientes. Mientras que

la presentación del Comité de Finanzas no estuvo planeada

para coincidir con el anuncio acerca de adicionales cierres y

consolidación de parroquias, no pudo ser más a tiempo.

Espero que todos respondan a su llamado para que la

parroquia de la Ascensión continúe siendo una parroquia

diversa y de bienvenida más allá en el futuro.

La semana pasada celebramos la Semana de Escuelas

Católicas. Hoy, me gustaría llamarles la atención a una

feria de escuelas primarias católicas que tendrá lugar el

próximo domingo, 12 de febrero del 2017, desde la 1 de la

tarde hasta las 2:30. Este evento tendrá lugar en la Escuela

Secundaria de Cristo Rey que está ubicada en el 112 E.

106, entre las avenidas Lexington y Park. El propósito es

invitar a familias de futuros estudiantes de Pre-K hasta el

octavo grado para que aprendan más sobre los beneficios de

una educación basada en valores católicos. En esta feria,

los padres de familia tendrán la oportunidad de conocer a

los principales y representantes de las escuelas. Recibirán

una guía del proceso de matrícula y ayuda financiera.

También recibirán ayuda completando y sometiendo sus

solicitudes en línea en la misma feria. La Escuela de la

Ascensión será representada en esta feria de escuelas

primarias junto con las escuelas de N. S. de los Mártires,

Santa Isabel, Encarnación, Santa Rosa de Lima, N.S. de

Lourdes, San Carlos Borromeo, Corpus Christi, San Pablo

y Santa Ana. El proceso de admisión está ahora vigente

para el año académico de 2017-18.

2017 Mission to the Dominican Republic

This summer our parish will be returning to Dominican Republic for a fifth year of Mission. The mission will take place from Sunday, July 2nd until Sunday, July 9th. The purpose of the mission is two-fold;

the Parish Mission is both spiritual and medical. Lincoln Piano Recital At Ascension

In honor of President’s Day and

African American History Month, a

one hour program called “Abe Lincoln”

will take place on Sunday, February 12th

at 3:30 p.m. at Ascension Church. This is a program of

folk-based vocal music by Edward Lipton and related

classical piano compositions performed by Gila Ducat-

Lipton. The song “Abe Lincoln” will be heard in a

recording sung by Ed Lipton with guitarist Daniel Louis

Bloch.
