He was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on September 24th, 1896.

His dad, Edward was from Maryland and his mother, Mary was an Irish immigrant who became wealthy as a grocer. They were both Catholic.

Why is he important to us today?

• He is important to us today because we have a direct source as to what life was like in the 1920's in his point of view. " In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald describes the 1920’s as an era full of greed, moral corruption, and unending social activities." (Writinghood, par. 2).

• When he first met his wife, he told her that he was going to be a famous author, but she doubted him, so she refused his proposal, and had several other suitors, but finally accepted when his first book was published. (Encyclopedia of Alabama, 2007).

• In the late 1920's their marriage began to suffer after he took a passage from her diary and put it in one of his books (Encyclopedia of Alabama, 2007).

• Fitzgerald referred to the 20's as 'The Jazz Age'. This decade was also known as wild times. It saw many changes in lifestyle and technology that revolutionized American life forever.

How did he die?• he was an extremely heaving

drinker, and he had recurring tuberculosis. He also had a bleeding (esophageal varices), and was very depressed . When he died he was eating a chocolate bar and reading the newspaper as he was going on with his day he suffered from a severe heart attack due to excessive drinking the night before.
