<ul><li><p>Support notes for teachers </p><p>Reception: Clothes from around the world 1 </p><p>Samsung Digital Discovery Centre EYFS/Reception Clothes from around the world The final page of these notes can be copied and given to adult helpers. </p><p>About this session </p><p>This session takes place in the Samsung Digital Discovery Centre, in the Clore </p><p>Education Centre. Students use a mixture of digital technology (including laptops </p><p>and digital cameras), object handling, sorting skills, dressing up and question and </p><p>answer in order to look closely at clothes from a number of cultures around the </p><p>world. </p><p>In this session, students will investigate how and why people from past cultures </p><p>and in the present dress themselves differently depending on the purpose and </p><p>climate. </p><p>Session lasts 90 minutes and includes a gallery visit. </p><p>The Museum would very much appreciate it if students attending could wash and </p><p>dry their hands before the session to help conserve the handling objects. We also </p><p>recommend that students wash their hands after the session, particularly if they go </p><p>straight into their lunch break. </p><p>Session outline </p><p> The session begins with a circle time introduction, discussing what the students </p><p>are themselves wearing. They then handle and sort some different clothes, firstly </p><p>familiar then from other cultures. </p><p> They then go on to use an interactive world map on the whiteboard to locate </p><p>where some of these clothes come from, and to see pictures of people wearing the </p><p>clothes. </p><p> Next, the children go out into the galleries with digital cameras and take </p><p>photographs of clothes from other parts of the world. </p><p> In the afternoon, they dress up in some clothes from different cultures, and are </p><p>photographed in front of a green screen. A background is later superimposed upon </p><p>the picture, and the finished images are posted out to your school. </p><p> Also in the afternoon, students have a free choice of digital and non-digital </p><p>activities, linked to the session topic. These may include games and activities on </p><p>the laptops or on paper, art activities, looking at books, or exploring the Museums </p><p>collection using the interactive whiteboard. </p></li><li><p>Support notes for teachers </p><p>Reception: Clothes from around the world 2 </p><p>Key themes of the session are clothes for different purposes, weather around the </p><p>world, similarities and differences of clothing in different cultures. </p><p>Key vocabulary includes different, same, hot, cold, wet, dry, head, body, arms, </p><p>legs, hands, feet, hat, coat, gloves, shoes, boots, dress, tunic, top, shirt, trousers </p><p>Preparing for your session </p><p> Ask the children to discuss what they are wearing that day. How is it different </p><p>from what they wear at the weekend? What do their parents wear to work and at </p><p>the weekend?
