GETTING THE RIGHT

ANGLEINTERIOR STYLE IS ALL ABOUT SHAPE

THIS SEASON, AS GEOMETRIC PATTERNS ARE TRULY COMING INTO THEIR OWN.

GABRIELLE FAGAN EXPLORES THE LATEST TRENDS ON OFFER AND HEARS FROM THE EXPERTS ABOUT HOW YOU COULD GIVE YOUR HOME THAT ‘WOW’ FACTOR WITH BEAUTIFUL EDGES AND

STUNNING STRAIGHT LINES

Even if you hated maths at school, it could be time to brush up on

your geometry, as decor focuses on shapes and angles. Lines,

triangles, hexagons, chevrons and circles are proliferating in

pattern and are a must-have, not just for this season, but beyond.

“Geometrics are a popular choice for bringing pattern into the

home, with sharp, angular designs such as zigzags and graphic prints

currently leading the way as favourites,” says Kate Tansley, Creative

Director at Multiyork. “Softer on the eye, circular geometric-style

prints are also making an impact and are a great way to introduce

the trend into a space and give it a stylish uplift. Geometric patterns

lend themselves perfectly to fabric and can easily turn functional

furniture, like a sofa or chair, into a striking statement piece.”

Of course, geometry isn’t solely represented in print; natural

geometry is all around us and it can be found in furniture design

and architecture, so there’s no need to completely redesign

your home to add a touch of the trend.

Our love of shape and angle goes back through history;

the ancient Greeks and Moroccans both used its principles

in their interior design. Today, many leading designers use

strong geometric shapes, combined with symmetry, to

bring a coveted feeling of elegance, order and tranquillity

to spaces.

“Art Deco-inspired interiors, with their characteristic

geometric lines and patterns, are enjoying a renaissance,”

agrees Karen Anderson, Editor at online interiors

company, Alison At Home. “The 2013 Great Gatsby film

had a big influence as fashion’s embraced pattern and

shapes as well. Perhaps more significantly, we’re living

through cash-poor times and the fact that this trend

so effortlessly creates a sense of opulence makes

it very desirable. If you really want a ‘wow’ factor,

introduce geometrics in monochrome or gold.”

So, forget Pythagoras’ theorem and all that

baffles – the correct answer is to sum up your

style with glamorous geometric shapes.

INTERIOR DESIGN

MONO MAGICDevotees of neutrals have known all along that colour may be cool for the moment, but clean, sharp monochrome or fashionable smoky grey schemes have timeless appeal and suit any interior.

“People often think these patterns can only work in bold, bright colours, but that’s a misconception because they work equally well in monochrome or grey palettes,” says Katie Watson, interior designer at furniture specialists, Fishpools. “The combination of strong design in monochrome shades creates a clean-cut, classic look that’s easy on the eye and can easily be enlivened, if necessary, with ‘pops’ of colour.”

TIP: When it comes to shapes, the look you create will depend on the lines and angles you pick. Curved lines give geometrics a retro twist, whereas sharper angles look more contemporary.

DO YOUR SUMS: Work the room with patterned walls or fl ooring. A monochrome pattern of squares on the Mardi Gras 599 Sagres vinyl fl ooring, from CarpetRight, could enhance a feeling of space in a room and is a snip at £12.99 per square metre.

Fired Earth’s Graphix porcelain tiles, suitable for both walls and fl oors, come in a pale neutral ‘Chip’ or a darker ‘Grid’ and have an interesting 3D effect. They are £124.76 per square metre or £5.50 per tile.

Just one piece can make a statement and a Lucien easy chair can be upholstered in Tessalate Raven fabric with a triangle pattern, from £1,162, Parker Knoll.

Experiment with the look before you commit by adding a few accessories, such as a Conran modern pop colour rug, from £129, Marks and Spencer, or an op art espresso cup set, £9.95, ZiggiZiggi. For metallic magic, a metal tray table, £195, Alison At Home, could fi t the bill.

NATURAL PATTERNSoft green and yellow shades paired with pattern are a subtle choice and in tune with our desire to feature the colours of nature and showcase natural materials like wood and stone.

“Pattern and colour can be daunting to use at fi rst, so play around with samples of fabric to make sure you’re picking up on a similar colourway or design, as this will ensure cohesion in a scheme,” says Kate Tansley at Multiyork. “‘Less is more’ is a good rule to follow, even if you’re passionate about these patterns. Too many ‘busy’ or varied prints can make a room feel chaotic, so limit your choice to two or three and ensure there are enough neutral accents to balance them out.”

TIP: To make a furniture piece the centre of attention, opt for a large, oversized geometric print in a vibrant colour palette.

DO YOUR SUMS: Next is never slow to pick up on a trend and there’s a retro feel to its Scattered Geo wallpaper, £15 a roll, and its reversible Retro Stem two-pack bed set, from £32. Grey and yellow oblongs have visual impact in the Geometric Yellow wallpaper panel, £40, Digetex Home.

Look no further for a statement piece than the Labyrinth chair in green, by Moooi, which has a green and white maze-like pattern, £2,340, available to order from Viaduct. If that would break the bank, simply cover an existing sofa or chair in a neutral coloured throw and add an Athens cushion or two, which feature a similar fabric and cost £75 each, In-Spaces.

Opt for ‘50s nostalgia – an era of abstract patterns and colour – with a Tray for Ruth, £34, Jasmine Way, decorated in yellow, black and green triangles.

OUT OF THE BLUEBlue still reigns supreme in interiors, and whether you choose its palest hues or deep indigos, pair it with pattern and it will surely pack a punch and speak volumes about your decor credentials.

“Create your own take on the Scandi-look by introducing bold, geometric prints in a neutral backdrop, to give your home a clean, modern feel,” says Philip Watkin, designer at sofa specialists, DFS. “Choose soft, cool colours to refl ect as much light as possible and open up small spaces to make them feel bigger, then experiment with bold patterns. Small or large doses of geometric pattern will help create a lively, interesting scheme.”

TIP: Choose a framed print with a geometric design in a dominant colour on a bright background. Place it in a focal point in your room and keep the wall a pale colour. The eye will focus on the pattern while the wall will appear to fade away, expanding the space.

DO YOUR SUMS: A focal point in a room, a chimney breast wall or alcoves, could be transformed with a geometric pattern wallpaper. Scion’s Dhurrie wallpaper in a rich turquoise, £34 a roll, is bold and beautiful.

Treat the toes and a room to the Raritan wool rug, £510, Calligaris, with its block pattern in grey and blue. Pick up on the trend with a Barton footstool in a triangular blue pattern, at a special price, £378, DFS. Alternatively, key into the look with a purse-friendly Ferm Living Little Geometry cushion in blue, £22.50, Naken

contrasting work surfaces all included

in the price, each Bovis Homes kitchen

can be selected (subject to stage of

ADDED EXTRAS AS STANDARDA Bovis Home will often include superb

extra features in your contemporary new

kitchen too – a stainless steel cooker and

hob, integrated fridge freezer, dishwasher

and maybe even a washer-dryer could help

will depend on the space available and

individual development, so please check

with your sales advisor.

ENVIABLE EN-SUITESMost of their homes feature an en-suite

shower or bathroom to the master

bedroom, while the larger family homes

often include more than one additional en-

suite. Long queues for the bathroom will

be a thing of the past!

AMPLE STORAGE SPACEAdequate storage can sometimes be

a problem, but with built-in wardrobes

provided to most master bedrooms and

often to further bedrooms in a number

of larger properties, there should be no

excuse for accumulating clutter in a new

Bovis Home!

contemporary, quality new homes for their

customers. You can take a first-hand look

at the quality of design and build by going

A HELPING HAND

HELP TO BUY EQUITYWhether you’re a fi rst-time buyer looking to get on the property ladder or an existing homeowner ready to move, the Government-backed Help to Buy scheme could make that dream home a more affordable reality

WHAT IS IT?The Help to Buy scheme was announced in the 2013 Spring Budget

and includes a shared equity package aimed at getting fi rst-time

buyers and existing homeowners on and up the property ladder.

Available to purchasers of new-build properties to the value of

£600,000, the buyer only needs a 5% deposit, and receives an

equity loan from the Government of up to 20%. There is no cap on

your earnings to qualify.

HOW DOES IT WORK?Ideal for those struggling to raise large deposits for a new home,

the 5% deposit requirement and the 20% equity loan of Help to

Buy mean you have access to 75% loan-to-value mortgages and

therefore more competitive interest rates. The Government loan

is interest-free for the fi rst fi ve years and can be repaid once your

mortgage is paid off or upon the sale of your home.

WHAT DO I DO NEXT?If you are interested in the Help to Buy scheme, which is available now,

you will need to get in contact with a participating housebuilder, such as

Bovis Homes, or your local HomeBuy agent, who will be your fi rst point

of contact.

THE SMALL PRINTThe equity loan must be repaid after 25 years or earlier if you sell your

home. You must repay the same percentage of the proceeds of the sale to

the Government as the initial equity loan (e.g if you received a 20% loan,

you will need to pay back 20% of the proceeds of the sale).

The loan is interest-free for the fi rst fi ve years. However, if the loan is not

paid back within this time, the interest will rise to 1.75% and continue to

rise annually by Retail Price Index (RPI) infl ation plus 1%.

HELP TO BUY GUARANTEEWith the assistance of this Government-backed incentive, securing your dream home has never been easier

WHAT IS IT?With the support of Help to Buy Guarantee, a mortgage works in

exactly the same way as any other, except that the Government

offers lenders the option to purchase a guarantee on mortgage loans.

Lenders taking part are therefore able to offer homebuyers more high-

loan-to-value mortgages (80 to 95%), which makes this a low-deposit

home buying solution. There is no equity loan element to this scheme.

HOW DOES IT WORK?The scheme is offered by mortgage lenders across the UK on existing

or new-build homes priced up to £600,000. You can apply for a

mortgage through participating high street lenders or through a

mortgage broker, who will then check that you can afford the mortgage

and that you don’t have a history of payment diffi culties. You will still

be fully responsible for your mortgage repayments, so if you have a 5%

deposit, you will need to take out and pay back a 95% mortgage.

WHAT DO I DO NEXT?Your fi rst step is to fi nd your home and talk to your lender (look out

for the Help to Buy logo). Head to www.helptobuy.org.uk for further

information and some helpful FAQs about the scheme. You can also

get advice from the Money Advice Service by visiting

www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk.

THE SMALL PRINTTo qualify for a mortgage supported by this scheme:

• You mustn’t own any other property anywhere in the

world at the time you buy your home

• Your mortgage must be a repayment one, not interest-only.

Offset and guarantor mortgages are also excluded

• You can’t let out the property to somebody else

• Your mortgage can be taken out by an individual or individuals,

but not by a company

• You can’t use the mortgage guarantee scheme with any other

Government incentive, such as Help to Buy Equity Loan or

Shared Ownership. Your deposit for the property can’t come

from a Government scheme either

• You don’t have to pay any additional fee to the Government to

get a Help to Buy supported mortgage

• The scheme will run until December 31 2016

YOUR HOME MAY BE REPOSSESSED IF YOU DO NOT KEEP UP THE REPAYMENTS ON YOUR MORTGAGE OR ANY OTHER DEBT SECURED ON IT.

Terms and conditions apply to all these schemes. Find out more at www.bovishomes.co.uk

Buying or selling a home can prove

SCHEMES

“Simply select a new Bovis Home, register with the Smooth Move service and they will do the rest”

WHAT IS IT?Smooth Move helps you to sell

your current property if you are

looking to buy a Bovis Home.

The idea is to get you moved

into your new place as soon as

possible and makes the process

so much easier. All estate agent

fees are paid for by Bovis Homes

when you move in so you can

save up to 2% of your property

value.

HOW DOES IT WORK?Using the service couldn’t be

easier. At least two local estate

agents will value your current

property and Bovis Homes will

suggest a selling price. Bovis

Homes will deal directly with

the agents for the duration of

the process to save you the

hassle. Once a buyer is found

the company will recommend a

solicitor, should you require one,

to help carry out the legal side

of the sale.

WHAT DO I DO?Simply select a new Bovis Home,

register with the Smooth Move

service and they will do the rest.

A £500 deposit is required when

you sign up to the scheme, which

will be refundable against the

reservation and purchase price

of your new home.

THE SMALL PRINTThe Smooth Move scheme is only

available on certain plots and

may not be used alongside any

other promotions.

Terms and conditions apply,

asks sales advisors for more

information.

HOME EXCHANGEIf you’ve fallen in love with a new home and can’t wait to move up the property ladder, why spend time buying and selling when you can simply exchange?

WHAT IS IT?Home Exchange is a stress-

busting scheme from Bovis

Homes that makes moving house

easier than it has ever been before.

Not only could you save time, you

could also save money. There are

no buyers that might drop out and

no one can snap up the house you

have set your heart on. The best

part is that you are not dealing

with an estate agent, meaning

you save fees of up to 2% of your

current property value plus VAT.

HOW DOES IT WORK?First of all, you choose your

dream Bovis Home. Next, two

or more estate agents will visit

your current home and agree on

a reasonable price that reflects

current market value. If the

property is suitable then Bovis

Homes will buy your house at

the agreed price and you can

move into your new Bovis Home

as soon as it is ready.

WHAT DO I DO?Have a look on the Bovis Homes

website and find a house that

you like. Then get in touch to find

out if the property is eligible for

Home Exchange. Usually it takes

two weeks for Bovis Homes to

make an offer on your current

property after you have chosen

a new home. Once you have

agreed the offer a full survey is

carried out on your property.

THE SMALL PRINTThe property you are selling

should be worth no more than

75% of the value of the new Bovis

Home you wish to purchase. A

deposit of £500 (of which £250

is non-refundable) will be taken

upon reservation, and will be

included in the price of your new

property. Another £250 will be

required for legal completion of

the transaction and is returned

after 14 days provided that the

property you are selling is in

adequate condition.

SMOOTH MOVEBuying and selling a property need not be time-consuming and stressful. And with Smooth Move you can save thousands of pounds too.

For police community support

officer Michelle Buckley, a visit

to a new Dawlish development

to introduce herself to the

Bovis Homes team there

proved to be a life-changing

experience. The 24-year-old

wanted to find out if the staff

at Nickleby Place had any

issues or concerns to report

– and a few months later she

and partner Aaron Paltridge

(22) found themselves moving

into one of the brand new

homes there thanks to the

Government-backed Help to

Buy scheme.

The property the first-time

buyers secured is a three-

bedroom Beardsley house

type with a large, spacious

sitting room, modern dining

area and fully fitted kitchen

with patio doors leading to the

rear garden.

“We wanted a three-

bedroom home because

we want to have a family,”

Michelle explains. “It also

has a really nice garden,

two parking spaces and a

downstairs toilet, as well as a

cut-off between the kitchen

and the lounge, which is ideal

because we didn’t want to

have an open plan.

“People have said to us

that, rather than just getting

on the property ladder, we’ve

taken two steps up! First-time

buyers normally start with

something simple, like a one

or two-bedroom property.

In terms of location, it’s also

perfect as it’s near to where

we both work and our families

live close by too.”

With the Help to Buy

scheme, the purchaser

receives a Government equity

loan of up to 20% of the cost

of the property, leaving a 5%

deposit and 75% mortgage

required by the buyers.

“I would say it was easy

to use and we were given

lots of information about

the scheme before making

the commitment,” says

Michelle. “We also received

further information about the

breakdown of the scheme and

repayments. I didn’t have to

do anything to set up Help

to Buy, so it was a stress-free

process. I was simply sent the

paperwork and then had to

sign where indicated.”

CUSTOMER STORIESFrom first-time buyers to existing homeowners, Bovis Homes are renowned for helping people secure

their dream property. It would seem their customers agree, as we reveal some inspiring stories from

buyers who have made that all-important step up the property ladder

When first-time buyers Amy

and Daniel Hutton began

searching for their new home,

they never expected to find it

while taking their dog Reggie

for a walk.

Amy (22), who works in

internal sales for a construction

company, and Daniel (25),

a web developer, bought a

four-bedroom detached house

at Rose Acres in St Neots,

Cambridgeshire soon after

taking a detour through the

Bovis Homes development

while out on a stroll with their

pooch. They originally moved

to the picturesque town

three years ago for better job

opportunities and were keen to

settle in the area.

“We hadn’t been looking

for long,” says Amy. “We used to

live near this development and

saw the house when out

walking our dog, so we enquired

about it. Everything happened

really quickly from there.”

While buying a property is

often the biggest investment

you can make, the couple

weren’t daunted by the

experience and used Help to

Buy Equity to purchase the

home.

“The whole buying process

and experience was excellent

because of the first-class

service we received from the

Bovis Homes sales team,” says

Amy. “Everything was very

straightforward and we were

given lots of help. We bought

the house when it was little

more than a shell, but we could

see how it was going to turn

out, and by looking at the show

home, we felt confident that the

end result would be a beautiful

new home.

“We chose this property

because we wanted a house

that we could live in for a

long time and grow into. We

both work in the town, so the

location is ideal for us.”

A combination of the Help to

Buy scheme, support from

Bovis Homes and a touch of

good old fashioned fate saw

the Stevenson family move into

a brand new three-bedroom

family home at Byron’s Wood

in Hucknall.

Nick, who works in the home

improvement industry, and Jo,

a hairdresser, along with their

three children, had been renting

in the area while trying and

failing to get on the property

ladder in their hometown.

“We used to rent a Bovis

Homes property on this

development for about two

and a half years, but then

more houses began being built

and the Help to Buy scheme

became available,” explains Jo.

“We had tried years ago to buy

a property, but couldn’t get a

deposit, so we were

really excited about this

assistance scheme. We both

work and have family in the

area, so we really wanted to

live here. Buying this property

felt like fate and that it was

meant to be.

“We found the buying

experience very relaxed as

we were never pressured

into anything,” says Nick.

“The sales team were very

helpful and friendly and the

assistance we received from

the recommended mortgage

advisor was second to none.

“What attracted us to the

property was the layout and

size, which we felt would suit

us as a family and it was always

our plan to buy a new build, as

it would be a blank canvas for

us to make our own.”

A Cheshire couple are

celebrating having more

room for manoeuvre after

part exchanging their three-

bedroom apartment for

a stunning five-bedroom

detached Bovis Home.

Dr Thari Ratladi and his

wife Diane were second-

time buyers when they

moved into their brand

new home in Wychwood

Village, Weston, using the

housebuilder’s own Home

Exchange scheme.

And the couple couldn’t

be happier after making

the decision to move,

because their old apartment

had become unsuitable for

their needs, particularly

those of their three-year-old

son, Theo.

“We were looking to stay

in the area as it’s perfect for

my husband’s work and we

really like the local school

too,” says Diane. “But we

wanted more of a family

home, with a garden, which

was really important for

our son. Thanks to Bovis’

Home Exchange scheme,

we were able to move out of

the apartment that we had

outgrown and into a five-

bedroom detached house

with a nice big garden.”

Diane and Thari said that

they received excellent

customer service from Bovis

Homes and in particular

thanked Sales Advisor

Jenny for her hard work and

dedication.

“The whole process was

so smooth,” continues Diane.

“We sat down with Jenny

and she said, ‘Just hand it

all over to me and I’ll do all

the work’. She took on the

bulk of the work and it all

ran like clockwork. It was

a big weight off our minds

– we could just enjoy the

experience.”

For some homebuyers,

landing that dream

property can take years.

Not so for supply chain

administrator Natashia

Ralphs (28) and site

engineer Fraser Newton

(29), who knew that the

three-bedroom, semi-

detached house at Carlett

Glade in Eastham was

for them, making the

dream a reality by using

Help to Buy Equity.

The couple had seen

this development being

built from the start, but

were worried that the new

homes would be out of

their budget. However,

when they saw the prices

of the first properties

being released and looked

into the Government-

backed scheme, with its

20% equity loan and 5%

deposit requirement, they

realised the possibilities.

“When we found out

about Help to Buy, we

thought it would be a

fantastic opportunity that

we had to grab with both

hands,” says Natashia.

“We went down to the

show home and fell in

love with the house

straight away. We loved

the layout and it was the

perfect size for us.”

A DREAM COME TRUE“We thought it would be a fantastic

opportunity that we just had to grab with both hands”

An international sportsman

with a hectic schedule of

competing around the

world, James Bevis, has

somewhere to call home at

last thanks to Bovis Homes.

Rifle shooter James won

a bronze medal in the 2012

London Paralympics and

was bang on target again

when he and partner Sarah

Graham, a nurse, along

with her children, 18-year-

old Tom and 16-year-old

Alice, found their dream

three-bedroom, semi-

detached home at Nickleby

Place in Dawlish.

“I travel all over the

UK and abroad for my

sport, but we wanted

somewhere that we could

call home,” he explains.

“Sarah is originally from

Teignmouth and her family

is in the area, so we really

wanted to live close by.”

“The service from Bovis

Homes was brilliant; we

can’t fault them,” adds

Sarah. “The sales team kept

us informed at every stage

and they were easy to

contact if we ever needed

anything. It was a really

smooth process.”

THE BENEFITS OF BUYING NEWOFFERING GREATER AFFORDABILITY AND PROTECTION, NEW-BUILD HOMES

ARE AN INCREASINGLY POPULAR OPTION FOR BOTH ASPIRING AND EXISTING HOMEOWNERS. WE HEAR FROM THE EXPERTS AT THE NATIONAL HOUSE

BUILDING COUNCIL (NHBC), WHO OFFER SOME KEY REASONS WHY A BRAND NEW HOME COULD BE THE RIGHT MOVE FOR YOU

Buying a house is one of the biggest

investments you’re likely to make in

your life. So, whether you’re a first-

time buyer or are looking to move up the

property ladder, there’s no doubt that you

will face a number of choices and decisions.

Before you start the hunt for the house

of your dreams, it’s a good idea to have

a long, hard think about exactly what

you want and need from a property. Is

it location? Running costs? Space? At

NHBC, the leading standard-setting body

and warranty provider of new homes, we

recently carried out a survey with over

1,000 new homeowners. They told us that

design was the thing they loved most about

their new-build home, followed by location,

size and space.

So, with more new homes being built than

before the end of the recession, now is as

good a time as any to consider buying a

new-build home. Here are just a few reasons

why you should:

A BLANK CANVASNew-build homes have neutral interiors, free

from any decorating disasters of previous

owners. They also come with a similar fresh

start in the garden, allowing buyers to

design and plant to their preferred taste.

SHORTER PROPERTY CHAINLong chains can be extremely stressful; with

a new home this is minimised because there

is no threat of the seller accepting offers

elsewhere or the vendor changing their

mind about moving. You will be at the end

of the selling chain and can concentrate your

efforts on packing up and moving out.

LOWER RUNNING COSTSNew homes are built with higher levels of

insulation and have more efficient heating

systems than ever before; some may even

come with renewable technologies that

improve efficiency even more. Better energy

efficiency should mean a reduction in carbon

emissions and lower heating bills.

10-YEAR WARRANTYAround 80% of new homes are covered by

NHBC’s leading 10-year Buildmark warranty

and insurance, which currently protects

1.6million homes across the UK. Check that

the builder is registered with NHBC before

you visit at www.nhbc.co.uk and ask for

a copy of the policy document when you

reserve your home.

ADDED CONSUMER PROTECTIONWorking with the industry, NHBC has

developed the Consumer Code for

Home Builders. The Code protects new

homebuyers by ensuring that they are

treated fairly, that they are fully informed

about their purchase and their consumer

rights before and after they move in, and

that they are provided with a suitable

redress scheme to deal with complaints.

More information can be found at

www.consumercodeforhomebuilders.com

INCENTIVE SCHEMESAs well as the Government-backed

Help to Buy scheme, some housebuilders

operate their own buyer incentives such as

part exchange on an old house, payment

of stamp duty, help with removal costs and

part-funded deposits. Many developers

also offer properties off-plan, meaning

homeowners reserving before

the house is built can choose their desired

plot and personalise the house to their

individual needs.

of new-build homes visit our website at

IN SEASON

exquisitenewhomes.co.uk36

Breakfast in bed might sound like a

distant dream for many parents, but

for celebrity chef Marcus Wareing,

it's a regular treat.

"My eldest son Jake got up on Saturday

morning recently, came to us and said,

'Would you like a bacon and egg sandwich?'"

Wareing explains. ‘Breakfast in bed - what

more could you want in life?’

His 11-year-old lad's ‘mean bacon sandwich’

is just one of the dishes Wareing's taught him

over the past year.

There was also a tasty risotto, which father

and son rustled up together, and countless

cakes that the family devours after dinner.

Jake's not the only junior Wareing to show

an interest in food. His brother Archie, eight,

and five-year-old sister Jessie have also

served up scones and tea for Wareing

and his wife Jane.

While chuffed with his children's

enthusiasm for cooking, Wareing's also well

aware that not all families are as passionate

about food.

But the chef, whose sophisticated dishes

over the years have earned Michelin stars,

is a firm believer in the benefits of cooking

with kids.

Not only does it encourage them to

be interested in what they're eating, it's a

wonderful passion the whole family can share,

and makes mealtimes more rewarding.

To inspire families to get their kids into the

kitchen, recipe website

www.greatbritishchefs.com is launching a new

app in association with Tesco Real Food, and

Marcus Wareing is one of many celebrity chefs who’ve teamed up to encourage children into the

kitchen. He tells Keeley Bolger why he’s so passionate about the project and the delicious delights

his own kids rustle up

FOOD

l Providing your children aren’t hungry,

take them to the supermarket and

involve them in the planning of meals

and buying the food. If possible, take

them to food markets and show

them different ingredients when

you’re away from home

l Buy your child a simple cookbook,

apron or whisk for their birthday or

Christmas

l Put your child’s bakes in their

lunchbox as a surprise so they can

show their friends at school.

l If you have a camera, let your child

take a picture of what they’ve made

Why not start a scrapbook of all the

things they’ve created?

l Set up a chart in the kitchen and give

your child a star whenever they make

something with you. This will boost

their confidence and keep them keen

If you fancy having a go, here’s one

of Wareing’s recipes (see next

page) from the app to start you off...

WAREING’S TOP TIPS FOR GETTING KIDS INTO COOKING

it's packed full of easy-to-follow recipes.

Wareing is one of a number of top chefs

who have contributed after hearing about

the website's Cooking With Kids initiative.

He's keen to pass on his skills - but

remains realistic about the pressures parents

face at mealtimes.

"It's not easy when you're sitting and

eating and the kids don't want to try things.

But it only takes one child to start leading

[and the others will follow]," he says.

Time is another constraint that

Wareing, who previously worked with

Gordon Ramsay, is all too familiar with.

Nevertheless, he thinks now is a perfect time

to start cooking with your children.

"I know everyone's busy, but even if

you're just cooking one or two meals a

week together, it's so worthwhile in the long

term," he says. "It's showing your children

that you're making an effort.

"It's too easy to stick something from the

freezer into the oven, gorge it down in front

of the TV and have no conversation."

The TV is off in the Wareing household,

but there's no danger of mealtimes being

boring - the family keeps a score sheet

marking each family member's recent bakes

out of 10, and Jake is currently ahead ‘by a

country mile’.

This all sounds delightful - but what

happens after the food's been scoffed and

the mounds of used pots and pans are

calling?

"The best place to start a kid in a kitchen?

Washing pots," says Wareing, laughing. "Get

them washing pots, putting things away,

getting things out for you."

Clean pans are a bonus, but the real

reward for Wareing is seeing his children

enjoying food and learning how to make it

for themselves.

"We're not master chefs at the weekend

with our children," he says. "But we make a

point of sitting around the kitchen table as a

family, eating and talking and I think that is

important. That's what food does - it brings

the family together."

“It’s too easy to stick something from the freezer

into the oven, gorge it down in front of the TV

and have no conversation”

FOOD

INGREDIENTS (serves 10)

Bacon filling:

8 bacon rashers

1 medium onion, finely chopped

100g soft cheese

100g cheddar, grated

1/2 bunch flat-leaf parsley, chopped

1 garlic clove, crushed

Pastry:

250g plain flour

3tsp baking powder

75g unsalted butter, diced and cold

225ml milk

1/2 tsp salt

20g butter, melted

BACONROLY POLIES

1. Heat your oven to 180°C/gas mark 4

and line a baking tray with parchment

paper

2. Place the flour, baking powder and

salt into a large bowl. Ask your little

helper to crumb the butter into the

dry mixture, then add the milk until

combined

3. Place the dough onto a floured

surface, then your little helper can roll

it out into a rectangle, approximately

1cm thick

4. Brush the dough with some of the

melted butter

5. Top with the bacon, covering all of

the pastry aside from a 2cm edge on

one of the long sides of the rectangle

6. Mix together the parsley, onion,

cheeses and garlic, then spread this on

top of the bacon

7. Brush the 2cm gap at the edge of

the dough with water

8. Now for the fun part: starting with

the side without the 2cm gap, start

rolling the dough until one big roll is

formed. Seal by pressing the water-

brushed gap onto the body of the roll

9. Wrap in cling film and place in the

fridge for 20 minutes

10. Remove and slice into 1.5cm-thick

slices

11. Place spiral side up onto the baking

tray and bake for around 15 minutes or

until golden-brown. Serve warm

design? And you can pair your cabinets

with the perfect worktop – with a wide

THERE’S HELP AT HAND IF YOU NEED ITMoores and Symphony kitchen designers

Spotlight on...

Hundreds of Devonian house buyers

have been discovering the benefi ts of

choosing a brand new property at Bovis

Homes’ locations across the county.

Following a few years away from the

south west peninsula, Bovis are relishing

being back and building in Devon, with

ten active developments currently taking

reservations, including Avocet Meadow

at Cranbrook, Nickleby Place at Dawlish,

Elberry Gardens at Paignton and Tors

Reach at Chudleigh.

“We’re back and bringing much-needed

new housing stock to the county’s market,”

says South West Sales Director, Wayne

Bennett. “It’s great news for Devon house

buyers, who can benefi t from the major

advantages there are to choosing new over

old. It should make sense for your budget,

your lifestyle – and even the environment.

“You can move into a bright new home,

untouched by previous owners, where you

can really make your mark! You’ll avoid

those DIY and repair jobs you inevitably

need in an older property, and if you

choose a Bovis Home, our all-inclusive

specifi cation means you’ll get even

more time and money to spend on the

family. That’s because a new kitchen with

integrated appliances is already in place

and many of our homes feature en-suite

bathrooms and built-in wardrobes.”

Featuring the latest materials and

technologies, new homes are also greener

and, with their overall improved heat

insulation, could save you hundreds on

energy bills. Housebuilders like Bovis are

working with the Government and lenders

on affordability, so there are now a number

of purchase assistance schemes available

that could prove life-changing.

The most publicised of these, Help to

Buy Equity, is a unique shared equity

scheme for fi rst-time buyers and current

homeowners, where the customer pays a

5% deposit and the Government supplies

a 20% equity loan – leaving just a 75%

mortgage required.

“It’s a great time for Devon buyers who

may have thought that a new home was

out of reach to take another look and

see just what is out there,” says Wayne.

“You should fi nd something that fi ts your

circumstances. For instance, if you’re

struggling to sell a property, we could

buy it with our Home Exchange package,

allowing you to move into your brand

new Bovis Home and avoid the stress and

expense associated with chains and estate

agent fees.”

TURN YOUR GARDEN INTO

Many of us moving into a new home are faced with the challenge of creating an outdoor area that is either

practical for a young family with somewhere safe for children to play, or is a stylish area for entertaining with a place to grow herbs and vegetables. A garden can also be somewhere to relax and be quiet, a much needed refuge from our busy work schedules. Whatever the requirement - enjoying the sunshine, listening to the birds and bees or enjoying a glass of wine with friends, making your garden a sacred

The most exciting part of buying a new home is that you have a blank canvas on which to create your perfect space - and we’re not just talking about interiors. The outside area is just as important, which is why we’re taking a look at exterior fl ooring

space is today more important than ever. This is exactly what the designers at

Organicstone have tried to create with their Stoneislands fl oor sculptures. The challenge was to design hardscape materials that were creative, individual stand-alone features that work as part of an overall design. Vicky Jones of Organicstone says: “Our Stoneislands range features sensual, curved forms available in a variety of simply explained sizes: Mini, Midi and Maxi, making it easy to work out what you can achieve on your new plot.”

LANDSCAPING

The Stoneislands collection of Midi fl oor sculptures are made up of nine organic and nature inspired shapes: Leaf, Paisley, Bean, Squash, Egg, Raindrop, Peanut, Delta and Heart. They all vary in colour and texture, allowing you to create an individual design on your own or work with a designer/ contractor to make your garden something that will really stand out from your neighbours.

The Maxi size is perfect for a dining area, with the Midi size making a statement feature. Some designs like the Delta, Bean and Egg have a hole in the fl oor sculpture, so that you can plant your favourite fl ower or herb.

The Mini size gives you a stepping stone that can make exciting pathways to draw you through your garden space, but with attention to design and individuality.

One of the unique features of Organicstone’s design process is their 1:10 scale miniatures, making it easy to see how they would work on a larger scale. Originally aimed at garden designers to show clients colour and texture, the small kits are available to purchase when you are planning your design, giving a fun and tactile tool to create your perfect garden in miniature - they also make great coasters.

Organicstone have worked with the award-winning Hillier Nurseries and

Garden Centres for eight consecutive years on their RHS Chelsea Flower Show entries, using the Stoneislands fl oor scupltures in the exhibits. The Bean Maxi has been showcased in three Gold medal-winning gardens.

With over 68 Gold medals at this prestigious show, Hillier Nurseries is the most successful exhibitor in the show’s 100-year history.

The core belief behind Organicstone’s handmade fl ooring is to create products to evoke a sacred space, where you can escape the stresses of modern life and enjoy both personal and family time, whatever size garden you have.

There’s also the added benefi t that Organicstone source sustainable materials close to home and keep traditional hand-crafted methods alive, which means you can feel good about the origins of the product.

As you embark on your new life in your beautiful new home, your outdoor space needs to look good from the start, while allowing you to have room to develop and continue to improve the space over the years. It must also take into account our changing seasons, when our summers can start late but last well into autumn, all of which makes Stoneislands ideal.

KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR THESE LOCATIONSBovis Homes are building more superb show homes in some prime locations in 2015. Here’s a taster of three great locations that will be opening their doors soon – and which are already taking reservations off plan

MEADOWS VIEW, EASTBOURNEThere will be a great selection of coach houses and three-bedroom homes at Meadows View. Eastbourne’s famous seafront is close by and the lively town centre is within easy reach, so these promise to be much sought-after properties.

However, there will only be 77 homes available at this luxury East Sussex location, so buyers will need to be quick to register their interest and get the pick of the plots. With great transport links to London, Brighton and Gatwick Airport and top shops, theatres and award-winning beaches closer to home, Meadows View will be well worth a look!

01323 344 145Eastbourne, East Sussex BN21 2BP

MERIDIAN END, PEACEHAVENThe time has come to add a further phase of homes to the popular Meridian End location, and this exclusive selection of 40 new properties is likely to attract lots of interest.

The properties available will range from ideal two-bedroom starter homes to four-bedroom family houses, and the team there are already taking reservations off plan.

With a thriving town centre and great transport links, Peacehaven is becoming a real property hotspot on the south coast and an area where Bovis Homes is proud to be building.

The design of this new phase reflects the style and quality of the rest of the development and new residents should quickly settle into this thriving East Sussex community.

01273 610 150 Peacehaven, East Sussex BN10 8RL

VICTORY SQUARE, COLCHESTERLocated in the historic town of Colchester, Victory Square has been one of Bovis Homes’ most popular developments in the region, and the announcement that a much-anticipated new phase is now selling off-plan is exciting news for the Essex housing market.

There’ll be just 49 properties in this attractive new part of the community – a mix of coach houses and three-bedroom town houses – which promise to be ideal for first-time buyers and families alike.

Located just opposite the barracks, the area is steeped in military history that goes back to Roman times. But as well as the ancient, there’s plenty of modern; with a wide variety of restaurants and entertainment venues, there’s always plenty to see and do in Colchester.

For those who enjoy walking and cycling, there’s the High Woods Country Park and Wivenhoe Trail, which runs alongside the River Colne, and in terms of transport there are great road links, while London Liverpool Street is just 50 minutes away by train and Stansted Airport is not far away.

MOVING GUIDE

PACKINGOrganisation is key to any successful pack. First,

make a list of all your possessions so that you

can keep everything in check. Next, get your

boxes way in advance from local shops and

supermarkets and keep any used newspapers

for wrapping valuables for extra protection.

Labelling each box clearly will help things

run smoothly on the big day, while packing

unessential items early and gradually will

alleviate any last-minute panic or stress.

DE-CLUTTERMoving house is the perfect excuse to have a

good clear-out. Sort through your possessions

and decide what needs to go and what needs

to stay – charity shops, friends and family and

online selling are all great ways of getting rid of

unwanted knickknacks. You’ll need to be fairly

ruthless and strict; remember, a new house is a

clean start and the last thing you want is to take

all your clutter with you.

INSURANCEThis should defi nitely be high on your list. It’s

worth getting your packing done professionally,

as there’s a chance insurance won’t cover

anything you’ve packed yourself if something

breaks – it’s cheaper than you might think and

will save a lot of time, money and frustration.

If you move with a fi rm, check they have

insurance so that you’re absolutely covered and

get cancellation protection in case the date is

changed at the last minute.

PLAN AHEADYou can never start planning your move too early.

If you’re using a moving company, get in touch

up to one month in advance; they should tell you

what they offer and what to start thinking about.

Likewise, let the necessary parties know when

you’re off – banks, insurance companies, loan

providers, employers, doctors and schools will all

need to know about your change of address, as

well as phone, utility and internet providers.

TRANSPORT AND TIMINGFor DIY moves, make sure your van’s the right

size – one that’s too small could lead to multiple

trips and one that’s too big can often result

in tricky parking. Be aware that some moving

days are busier than others, such as Fridays and

Bank Holidays, while it’s generally cheaper to

hire vans on weekdays if possible, although you

can sometimes take advantage of a two-day

hire deal over a weekend.

SHOP AROUNDIf you’re getting the professionals in on moving

day, make sure you’ve done your research

and found out as much as possible about

your chosen company, such as references and

background. Get at least three written quotes

from established removal fi rms, ideally using

personal recommendations. Ensure they are

members of either the British Association

of Removers (BAR) or the National Guild of

Removers and Storers (NGRS), both of which

can also recommend fi rms.

COMMUNICATE CLEARLYLet the moving company know how much

you’re taking, so it can choose the right sized

truck, plan the number of journeys needed

and estimate how long it will take. They’ll need

to know the exact time you want the team

to arrive, with clear directions to your new

property. Arrange a parking space for the

removal van and tell the fi rm well in advance

about furniture that won’t go through the door.

ON THE DAY Get someone to look after your children

and pets, round up all the keys to your old

home from neighbours, friends and relatives.

Make sure the removal fi rm has the colour-

coded layout of your new property and

arrange for vans to be able to park outside

if necessary. Also, introduce yourself to

neighbours, who should be able to give

you advice about the area.

Moving house is an exciting time, although it can often be a stressful experience. With so much to organise, it might get a bit overwhelming, but with a little planning, you’ll be well on your way to staying on top of things. Here are some helpful hints to ensure the big day goes off without a hitch

IN SEASON

exquisitenewhomes.co.uk74

The time is right for families to jump on

or step up the property ladder in Greater

Manchester, with some fantastic assistance

schemes out there to help get them moving

into a newly-built home. And the well-

publicised Help to Buy Equity loan scheme

is paving the way for people to move into

The Avenues at Newton Heath and Smithills

Glade in Bolton, two superb developments

in the area from Bovis Homes.

Recent figures released by the

Government showed that Mancunians

were among the keenest buyers in

the country to take up Help to Buy,

where a 20% Government equity loan

means the buyer only needs a 5% deposit

and 75% mortgage. But there are other

assistance packages available at Bovis

that could be just right for growing families,

including a Home Exchange scheme and

another Government-backed low deposit

scheme, Help to Buy Guarantee.

“Help to Buy Equity has quite rightly

received a lot of attention because of the

opportunity it provides to buyers who

may have previously been frozen out of

the Greater Manchester market due to

lenders requiring higher deposits,” says

Bovis Homes Northern Regional Marketing

Manager, Carina Wilde.

“But it’s not the only show in town; we’ve

seen that some families prefer to use Help

to Buy Guarantee, which also requires a 5%

deposit, but doesn’t include an equity loan,

and many who already own and are looking

to upsize use our Home Exchange scheme.

This can save on time and money, which

could be better spent on the family, as we

could buy their old property to get them

moving into a brand new Bovis Home.”

For families looking for more space,

three-bedroom homes at The Avenues

currently start at £161,995. As with all Bovis

properties, it includes a new kitchen with

integrated appliances and many

other features in the price – with Help to

Buy Equity it could be snapped up, using

an initial Government equity loan of

£32,400, meaning the buyer needs a

deposit of £8,100.

The homes in this area are also ideally

placed for your work/life balance, with

great locations allowing you to commute

to Manchester during the week and set off

for superb rural days out on the doorstep

at the weekend.

“It’s our goal to build quality new homes

in great locations and that’s just what we’re

offering at The Avenues and Smithills Glade

at the moment,” adds Northern Sales and

Marketing Director, Lynton Dudgeon. “As

well as the great access to Manchester,

we’re spoiled by the nearby countryside

and historic towns and cities.”

Bovis Homes’ Southern region teamed up with consortium partners to give a major boost to two Hampshire hospices.

Together with Taylor Wimpey and Bellway (the housebuilder’s partners at the Abbotswood development in Romsey), Bovis have donated £10,000 to Naomi House and Jacksplace hospices. The former cares for children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions up to the age of 16, while the latter is the hospice’s purpose-built unit for those aged 16 to 25.

“It’s just fantastic to have received a £10,000 cheque, which is such a substantial donation and will make a huge difference to us,” says Michelle Wheeler, Major Gifts and Marketing Manager for Naomi House.www.naomihouse.org.uk

View to a changeEmployees at Bovis Homes have raised enough money to make a life-changing difference to five families living in poverty across the world. In handing over £6,650 to international development

charity, Habitat for Humanity, the business has donated enough for five new homes to be built in areas of the world hit by poor living standards and homelessness.

The cash was raised by all staff members who completed an in-house

employee survey; for every entry sent in, Bovis agreed to donate a sum of money, reaching a final grand total that was hailed by the charity as ‘a fantastic sum’ that ‘will make a huge difference’.www.habitatforhumanity.org.uk

Not content with tackling tough terra firma tasks, Bovis employees Helen Bullen and Theresa McPhilimey took their fundraising challenges more than 10,000 feet into the air by skydiving for charity.

Eastern Assistant Civil Engineer Helen leapt out over Kent, while South West Sales Advisor Theresa took a trip to Devon with a difference for her sponsorship efforts. With the support of colleagues, they raised almost £1,500 between them for the Devon Air Ambulance Trust and Heart of Kent Hospice charities.

“What a fantastic experience it was!” says Helen. “I would urge everyone to give it a go – it’s the most scary, insane and wonderful feeling!”www.daat.org | www.hokh.org

The successful completion of a 10-year project to replace 330 post-war prefab properties in Bristol with over 1,000 Bovis homes has been hailed by the city’s mayor as ‘a brilliant scheme’.

The award-winning project saw the housebuilder working with the council to construct new homes to replace the prefabs, originally built with a 10-year life expectancy, across 15 sites throughout the city and provide a further 1,050 new homes, including 152 affordable rentals for local residents.

Decade of delivery The Northern region of Bovis Homes

was there to lend a hand when Woolley Grange Park held a special community fete recently.

With a real local spirit having developed at the site, the regional team was only too happy to help out when the residents’ association needed some assistance with organisation and the provision of facilities.

Attractions included a Woolley Grange Bake Off, photograph competition, craft stalls, bouncy castles, circus shows, face painting, raffles and much more.

Grand day out

Ecological and archaeological investigations have taken place at Stanton Cross in Wellingborough to prepare for the first construction phase of the 3,200-home site.

The work will ensure the Northamptonshire development won’t interfere with any protected species or disturb unrecorded archaeological sites.

Works included looking for evidence of suitable habitats for badgers, reptiles, otters, water voles and bats, as well as thorough investigations of ponds within 500m of the proposed infrastructure area, to assess the suitability for great crested newts.

Volkswagen lifted the lid on

the E-Bugster concept car at

the Beijing Motor Show in April

2014. The E-Bugster had made its debut

as a coupé at the Detroit Auto Show in

January, but the electric concept’s hard-

top was later removed, giving the best

hint yet of the look of the future Beetle

Cabriolet, and also showing the potential

for Volkswagen’s future all-electric

drivetrains.

An electric motor provides the

E-Bugster with 85 kWh (115 PS) of

power, which can propel it from 0 to

60mph in 10.9 seconds, and yet offers

a range of at least 110 miles from the

28.3 kWh lithium-ion batteries. If the

E-Bugster needs a top-up, a fast-

charging function allows complete

recharging in just 35 minutes from a

specialist DC source, or slower charging

from an AC source such as a 230-volt

domestic outlet.

The E-Bugster also charges itself

as soon as the driver’s foot leaves the

accelerator pedal, when kinetic energy

is transformed into electricity and stored

in the battery. Applying the brakes

increases the intensity of regeneration,

a function that is indicated to the

driver in the instrument panel. Other

instruments include driving range and

battery state indicators and a meter that

shows how much energy the driver is

requesting via the accelerator pedal.

The E-Bugster’s speedster look

is created partly by a 90mm lower

windscreen, and also by the distinctive

shape of the panel that covers the

lithium-ion batteries behind the seats.

Both front and rear bumpers have been

substantially modified from those of

the production Beetle. At the front, LED

daytime running lights at the outer edges

of the central air intake form a C-shape on

the left that is mirrored on the right –

a signature of Volkswagen’s electric

vehicle concepts. At the back, reflectors

take the place of LEDs.

At 4,278mm long and 1,838mm

wide, the E-Bugster is the same length

as a standard Beetle, but 30mm wider.

Beneath the flared wheel arches sit

20-inch alloy wheels with 235/35 tyres.

With its latest Beetle model, the German manufacturer has introduced an environmentally conscientious machine that delivers e-lectrifying performance. We investigate some of the key features on offer and find out why the E-Bugster continues a sporty theme

A garden is a space to relax,

entertain and be creative, but

it’s also great for attracting

wildlife. Whether you consider

yourself to be ‘green-fi ngered’

or fi nd it diffi cult to distinguish

your peonies from your

petunias, we’ve put together

a guide on how to create an

outside space fi t for nature

exquisitenewhomes.co.uk36

A HOME IN YOUR GARDEN

A t Bovis Homes, ecology plays

an important role in their

developments. Green open spaces,

landscaped areas and extensive planting

of shrubs and trees encourage wildlife and

provide attractive, relaxing environments.

Helping Our Prickly Friends

For instance at the housebuilder’s

Church Meadows development in

Bromsgrove, they’ve put the focus on one

of Britain’s most popular wild animals.

By introducing wildlife corridors, they’ve

enhanced the natural ecology of the area,

allowing hedgehogs to roam around from

garden to garden without being forced onto

roads. They’ve even incorporated hedgehog

homes into the gardens to provide them

with a safe, cosy habitat.

You can do your bit for everyone’s

favourite prickly mammal too.

The numbers of hedgehogs in

the UK have been in decline

in recent times, which means

it’s more important than ever

to ensure they have a suitable

habitat and can wander around safely

when searching for food.

While they often make their homes in

compost heaps, piles of logs, leaves and

other garden debris, you could create or buy

your own hedgehog home for your garden.

It couldn’t be simpler – all you need is a

wooden crate, which you should turn upside

down and then make an entrance so that

they can get in and out. It’s also a good idea

to cover the crate in debris and position it

away from wind and sunlight. In fact, the BBC

has created a step-by-step guide showing

you how to make a hedgehog home from

scratch which can be found on their website.

And remember – hedgehogs can help with

pest control because they eat insects and

slugs, so by providing a safe haven for them,

you’re helping to protect your garden.

To fi nd out more about how you can help

nature on its way, the Royal Society for the

Protection of Birds (RSPB) has created a

free ‘Give Nature a Home’ starter guide, or

you can buy one of their exclusive hedgehog

homes which would jazz up any garden, all

for a good cause.

GARDENS

The two foods sought by bees are

nectar (providing sugar and a source of

energy) and pollen (providing various

nutrients and protein); it’s essential

to choose plants that offer these in

abundance. Below is a list of some of

those most loved by bees – remember,

they prefer a variety of native fl owers:

FLOWERS FIT FOR A BEE

The Year for Bees

Another declining species causing much

concern of late is the bee. According to

Garden Media Group’s Garden Trends

Report, 2015 will be the year of the bee,

which means that now is the time to plant

pollen-rich fl owers!

There are many contributing factors that

have been linked to the plight of bees and

other pollinators; these include agricultural

changes, the widespread use of pesticides,

various diseases, parasites and climate

change. However, the good news is that

there are certain nectar and pollen-rich

plants that will enable you to turn your

garden into a banquet for bees.

Bees are responsible for pollinating 75%

of the world’s crops and without them food

would have to be pollinated by other means

– costing billions and potentially resulting

in a food crisis. They’re at their most active

during the summer, however you should

ensure that you have plants fl owering

at different times of the year, which can

provide sustenance to various species of bee.

As a general rule, bees love fl owers that

are rich in colours like purple, blue, white

and yellow, which is fantastic news for your

garden, and you should also plant

fl owers in clusters, such as large

fl owerbeds, as this will be more

attractive to bees. Pesticides

should be avoided and keep

in mind that certain shapes

of fl owers can be extremely

diffi cult for bees to feed from. To fi nd out which fl owers you

should plant in your own garden,

use a handy tool from the

Bumblebee Conservation Trust,

which is available at www.beekind.

bumblebeeconservation.org/fi nder

The British Beekeepers Association

(BBKA) has also put together a list of

pollen and nectar-rich plants based on

season and type at www.bbka.org.uk

Just like hedgehogs and other wildlife,

you can also create a home for bees

using a few materials, and the charity

Friends of the Earth has created a

useful guide on how to create a bee

hotel at www.foe.co.uk
