Step 1. Learn about skills, knowledge and experience that you need

Knowledge

If you are applying to be registered in the class of Commercial Builder (limited to steel erection work) and you have successfully completed one of the following qualifications:

· Certificate III in Rigging (CPC30711), including the following units of competency:

· Arrange building applications and approvals (CPCCBC4026A)

· Identify construction work hazards and select risk control strategies (CPCCWHS3001)

· Produce labour and material schedules for ordering (CPCCBC4005A)

· Read and interpret plans and specifications (CPCCBC4012B)

· Select and prepare a construction contract (CPCCBC4003A)

then you will satisfy some of the technical knowledge requirements for registration.

These qualifications do not include units of competency relating to applying for a building permit, or managing occupational health and safety, contracts or project budgets.

Experience

To assist in our assessment of whether you have the required experience for registration in this class of building practitioner, you must provide a portfolio of evidence (tables 1 and 2) that demonstrates your experience.

This portfolio should demonstrate your capacity to undertake all the activities associated with the class of Commercial Builder (limited to steel erection work) – in a competent manner and to a professional standard.

Your portfolio should include evidence of:

· your experience in the areas that you tick in table 1

· details for three different commercial construction projects that together demonstrate your involvement in all stages of steel erection work, from project start to completion (table 2).

Finally, table 3 provides examples of the types of documentary evidence of your experience that you could provide.

STEP 3. Use table 3 to create your evidence portfolio.

Create a table that summarises all your experience in commercial steel erection work.

• plans, drawings or specifications from which you worked

• initial cost estimates that you prepared during the pre-contract phase

• documentation demonstrating your capacity to prepare cost schedules (‘take-offs’) for project material quantities and costs (for example, estimating worksheets)

• documentation demonstrating your capacity to prepare a schedule of specialist contract work require (trade breakdown)

Prepare a construction time and trade sequencing program for the building works

Evidence of a project program that you developed or contributed to, such as:

• Gantt or similar progressive charts

• critical path events

• trade sequencing

• commencement and completion dates

Establish, monitor and manage financial plans and budgets for the project

Evidence of work you undertook during pre-construction, such as:

• cash flow statements for each project or a component of each project

• a profit and loss statement for each project or a component of each project

• project financial monitoring documentation

• examples of project insurances you administered, including:

- public liability

- building works

- structural defects

- contracted works

Assist in the selection and administration of contracts for the building work

• Documentation demonstrating your capacity to select and administer commercial building contracts appropriate to the project, including:

- type of contract (simple, major works etc.)

- general conditions

- legal obligations

- allowable schedules

- prime costs/variations

- other.

• Examples of documented processes that you implemented relating to the management and resolution of disputes

• Examples of methods for managing variations in contracts that you administered

• Labour hire agreements that you entered or contributed to for the carrying out of commercial building work

• Examples of progress claims submitted showing progressive claims for payments as sections of the work are completed, including individual trade progress breakdowns

• Policies or processes that you developed or contributed to that support compliance with contractual responsibilities, including dispute management and quality assurance processes

Develop, monitor and manage occupational health and safety for construction sites and surrounds

Evidence should include:

• three examples of Safe Work Method Statements (SWMSs) for each construction site

• job safety analyses for at least three different work tasks

• health and safety coordination plans for each construction site (if relevant)

• traffic management plans

• documentation related to site inductions, including induction program, checklists and records management for each construction site.

Evidence may include:

• policies or procedures that you contributed to or implemented to manage health and safety

• completion of relevant OH&S certificates.

Select and manage subcontractors and licensed trades

Evidence should include:

• procedures for the recruitment of staff and contractors at required stages of each project

• contract documents or agreements used to engage staff or subcontractors

• procedures for ensuring staff and contractors hold appropriate licenses/tickets, accreditation, training

• evidence that onsite training and induction was provided to staff and recorded.

Plan, coordinate and manage building work in line with architectural, designer and engineering specifications

Develop and manage project schedules for the work

• Drawings and specifications for each construction project

• Documentation related to your day-to-day coordination of the program of work

• Documentation demonstrating your application of National Construction Code requirements, Australian Standards, and state or local statutory requirements, including the use and application of compliant building materials appropriate to the building Class and type of construction

• Risk management policies or procedures that you developed or contributed to or administered

• Copies of quality assurance documents and processes to ensure compliance of work and defect- free building, before handover (e.g. trade compliance certificates)

• Copies of handover documentation, including ‘as built’ plan updates, operations manuals etc.
