Friday 3rd May

Steers to £1335 Heifers to £1240

Another busy day in the pens with both the third spring sale of continental cattle and a special sale of Beef Shorthorn,

supported by Morrisons supermarket. A packed sale ring saw plenty of competition for all classes and a top price of £1335

well deserved for a 2yo Limousin steer, the pick of an excellent run from Charles & Ann Down of Abbotskerswell, with

others at £1285 (x4) & £1270. Farmer Luxton from Okehampton saw his shapely pair of 22mo Limousin hit £1320 apiece

with others at £1200 whilst his grand 18/19mo Angus’s reached £1235, £1215 (x2) & £1200 (x3). Peter Hooper of Bovey

Tracey consigned his usual high quality suckler bred animals, topping at £1270 for three smart Limousin steers with

another pair reaching £1260 and other at £1200. A well farmed run of 22/24mo British Blues from John & Jenny Squire

from South Tawton saw the best pen hit £1225 (x4) with others at £1195 (x4). Alan Ridgeway of Newton Abbot sold a

pair of 23mo South Devon Steers a £1200 apiece. An equally well farmed run from Steve Slade & Family of Aylesbere saw

22mo South Devon x steers (x5) reach £1190 whilst a tremendous run of young British Blue & Angus cattle from J

Burrough & Co of Seaton saw a super Angus race away to £1165 with similar aged Blues to £1145 and yearling Blues up

to £820 (x7). Top call in the heifer section went to Simon Booty of Newton Abbot for a 2yo Angus at £1240. Peter

Hooper saw his 24mo Limousin heifers reach £1050 (x2), £1045 (x3) & £1025 (x3) whilst Anne Brown of Ottery St Mary

reached £1035 with a pair of strong British Blues.

The Beef Shorthorn section saw top honours go to Messrs R & JM Bunney of Gorran who won the Morrisons judged

event with their 24mo steers which fetched £1000 a piece (x5), whilst a very well grown run from Roger Grose also of

Gorran saw 13mo steers at £795 (x3) with younger £670 (x5) & 13mo heifers at 690 a piece.

Another decent show of stirks and suckled calves met another good trade albeit with fewer buyers present. Smaller heifers

and harder bred cattle not just so fast. Steers topped at £920 for smashing Limousin crosses from W & R Farming &

Partners of Exeter (10m) with others off the same good holding hitting £690 (8m). Joe Richardson of Sherford showed his

usual smart Charolais sorts with the best achieving £835 (12m), with others to £830 and £805. Blues to £690 (10m) from

Louise Elworthy of Exeter, the same figure achieved by RWC Beard & Son of Bickington showing Hereford crosses (13m).

Brittan & Co of South Brent realised £680 for South Devons (8m), whilst older but similar bred sorts from Steve

Arrowsmith-Brown of Postbridge reached £670 (12m), Miles & Helen Partridge of Poundsgate reached £655 again for

South Devon steers (12m), whilst Lin Parkhouse & Edwin Tucker of Pennymoor hit £650 this time for sweet Limousin

steers (9m). Heifers topped at £705 for wonderful Limousin crosses from Russell & John Stevens of Crediton (12m),

further Limousin crosses from Leo & Jeanette Bradford of Iddesleigh achieved £650 (12m), Steve Arrowsmith-Brown

achieved £630 for South Devon heifers (12m), the same figure achieved by W&R Farming Partners presenting further

Limousin heifers (7m). Lin Parkhouse & Edwin Tucker attained £620 again for Limousin cross heifers, whilst further

Limoiusin cross heifers from RWC Beard & Son (13m) attained £600.

Please contact Ian Caunter 07813 068935 for any marketing advice.

A much larger entry of calves sold to a decent trade

although slightly easier than last week. Top of the

day was £400 for a super Limousin bull from

Norman Pyle of Crediton who sold others to £342.

British Blue bulls to £360 for David Gillbard of

Crediton with others to £340 for Messrs MF

Yendell & Son of Crediton, £320 for Messrs DAJ &

JM Down of Crediton, £310 for Messrs Lawrence

& Tapp of Awliscombe & £308 for James & Lorna

Burdge of Yarcombe. Charolais bulls to £305 for

Andrew & Rose Retter of Honiton. Hereford bulls

to £260 (x2) for Steve Loud of Colyton. Weaned

British Blue heifers to £390 (x3) for Messrs

Lawrence & Tapp with younger sorts to £225, £220 (x2), £215 & £205 for Messrs DAJ & JM Down. Charolais heifers sold

well to £308, £285 & £280 for Andrew & Rose Retter. Limousin heifers to £228 for Norman Pyle. Friesian bulls to £115

for Messrs DAJ & JM Down who sold others to £95, £70 & £50.

A smaller number of orphan lambs met steady demand on the whole whilst stronger, older lambs sold well topping at £37

& £25 for Sam Hext & family of Buckland in the moor and £31 (x2) for Adcock & Wotton of Moretonhampstead who had

others at £20 (x3). Best of the rest from £10 to £14 but some selling from £2 gave an overall average of £10.60.

***ALL ORPHAN LAMBS MUST BE FED BEFORE THEY COME TO MARKET TO BE SOLD***

Fewer store hoggs and lambs sold well for the quality forward with smart spring lambs reaching £96.50 & £94 for Rex

Barrett and family of Truro whilst Phil Bradley of Tedburn St Mary sold strong hoggs to £95.50, Farmer Luxton of

Okehampton was close behind at £94 and both G Palfrey & son of Stoodleigh and John & Jean Blackler of Harbetonford

made £93.50. Majority of other hoggs from £70 to £90 depending on weight and cover and proper store new season lambs

selling from £51 to £78.

Grazers looked a tidy trade in front of five keen buyers and sold to £75.50 & £68.50 for Graham Heal of High Bickington

and £68 for JC & EM Ridout of Duloe with all but a few pens selling upwards of £54.

Breeders were topped by a cracking pair of 6T/FM Texel rams from Jonathan Musgrave of Yealmpton that climbed to £145

apiece and three pens of empty Suffolk x ewe hoggs from James Westcott of Cullompton sold to £95, £93.50 and £92.50.

Another big entry of 502 ewes with their 705 lambs were a variable trade but the best were well rewarded. Topping at

£220 was PD Arscott of Upottery with a nice triplet whilst doubles from the same home made to £190 and Suffolk x

doubles topped at £215 for Lara Hyde of Shobrooke. A Dispersal of the later lambing flock from Brembridge Farms of

East Village saw 10 strong Dorset mule ewes with 16 smart forward lambs sell at £205 (£78.85/life) as well as bunches of

4 with 7 at £165 (£60/life) and 4 with 6 at £150 (also £60/life). More doubles at £180 for Michael Vooght of Hennock,

£172 for both Richard Helmer of West Alvington and Melvyn Brice of Stoodleigh. The special catalogued sale of Hogg

couples saw a smaller entry on the year sell to a steady uncertain trade, but 95% clearance. Nice Suffolk cross Hogg

doubles sold to £164 for Milbornewick Farms of Sherborne who were also one of the three vendors to sell singles at £142,

this was matched both Peter Tucker of Cadeleigh and JA & YJ Hopkins of Taunton with nice NC Mules. Other Hogg singles

from £108 to £140. Shearling singles sold to £140 for Texel types again from Richard Helmer and £139 for 6T/FM Dorsets

again from Melvyn Brice. General “farming couples” were £128 to £150 for the doubles and £115 to £130 for the singles

whilst lesser, third quality sorts sold from £22 to £38 per life.

***ALL COUPLE VENDORS MUST SUPPLY STRAW FOR THE PENS CONTAINING LAMBS***

The first Special Sale of Beef Shorthorn Cattle was held and a strong demand was seen for quality throughout. A large

entry of Store Cattle were sold within the Store section (see Store Cattle report) and a good entry of Pedigree Females

saw strong demand for the best. This section started with four Cows with calves at foot from Messrs R & JM Bunney of

St Austell which topped at £1380 for a 2013 born cow “Carvinick Gale Marigold” which sold with her March born heifer

calf by Carvinick Commander. A 2014 born cow “Carvinick Honeysuckle Gem” by Trevarrick Brigadeer sold with her bull

calf at foot for £1120. Messrs Venn Park Farm of Crackington Haven sold three smart two year old heifers from their

“Rowfold” herd to strong demand with two heifers by Glenbrae Grant selling at £1060 each with another close behind at

£1020. Messrs P & P Howlett & Son Farming of Dartmouth sold a strong run of heifers from their “Larkhayes” herd to

top at £940 twice for twelve month old heifers by Lintonpriory Dollar with others by Ashwater Jack selling to £920 (x2).

Other yearling heifers from the “Trevarrick” herd of Messrs RT Grose & Son of St Austell sold to £690 (x3).

After a long road, prices in the pig industry have kicked on well with big increases in the sow and store

pens whilst the prime trade is better but has not seen the same jump as the sows have seen.

Friday’s entry was part of 102 sows sold in Exeter over the past seven days and saw a fantastic trade with the very best

from Chris Down hitting a sensational £230 with the best from Andrew Freemantle of Clyst St Mary at £226 and Jeremy

Brown of Poltimore at £208 and matched by Richard Gibbins and family for their best heavyweight. Top ten cull sows

averaged a massive £203.48 with plenty of lightweight types between £135-£160. Best cull boar reached £112 on behalf of

MJ Comont & Son of Crediton.

Nice entry saw a useful but not fantastic trade however a top call of £114 was seen for a pen of heavy gilts in from Budleigh

Salterton with another pen of four at £110. Richard & Vicky Gibbins sold their medium weights at £92 & £91 with a useful

line up from Richard Knox of Whiddon Down at £90. With 5 buyers on the prime pigs it’s good to see competition for

pigs at Exeter.
