specification Target Market

my target market would be any age as my table will be sold in a antique

shop and will be priced not so dear and not so cheap,

Manufacture

I will make my table in school using the wood that I have bought and I will

make the legs at home and will do all the cuttings at home for my top piece,

Cost: hopefully my table will cost 50 pound in the shops as I had to pay that

amount for my materials.

DEVELOPMENT- HINGES I have chosen a basic structure for my final design to the stage where I need to decide how I want to join my product together. I am fairly certain that I want to join my product using hinges but I decided I needed to research into hinges a bit more as there is a large market. I looked at existing products used in everyday life and found two examples of quite unique hinges.

This hinge operates using a pivot. It has been incorporated into the design, making it different and despite this, it has still been made a feature of the product although the hinge does not necessarily stand out. It makes the product more modern and classy. I really like this design for a hinge and am seriously thinking about taking elements of the design forward into my project. The only problem I can see is that there is a danger of finger traps which would be a hazard to the user of my product considering he is a young child. I would have to look into improving the hinge if I were to take it forward.

The hinge above operates using a screw- mechanism. A big advantage is that the product can therefore be taken apart. This can be useful in industry as the product could then be possibly manufactured and sold flat-packed making the product more efficient. The design of the hinge is quite a bespoke design but is not a ‘main’ feature of the product.

I took into consideration both designs and have made a second prototype of my project, focusing on the hinge in an attempt to make my product more unique from those already available on the market.

DEVELOPMENT

This is a finished model which I make to test out the hinge I was planning to use for my final design. I have decided to keep this design but in the model, the component on the side is made of acrylic. These components for my final product, will be made of aluminium as the material is stronger and therefore less prone to breaking through rough use by the child. I also think aluminium will add to the aesthetics of the product making it more modern.

Computer Aided Modelling

I decided to add a pivot to my initial design idea as this would improve the coverage of the light over a desk where this is designed to function. This is now my secondary design idea which I modelled out of cardboard into 1:1 dimensions to give me some idea how the product would look in reality. I then sketched the second generation model (Fig.1) and approved the design update. The image on the right shows the transformation from iPod dock to desk lamp, with the lamp pivot fully deployed (Fig.2). I added the central pivot to the CAD model and pictured the pivot in three main views, this is now the second revision of my primary design idea (Fig.3).

Pictures of model

Top view

Side view After sketching a design, I

decided to make it to see what it

would look like in 3D and also if I

were happy with the final

outcome. Even though the model

wouldn’t be the size of the final

product it would give me a good

idea about how the final product

outcome would be like.

After making the model of my

sketch I decided that I didn’t like

this design because it looked

childish and children aren’t my

audience, even though my client

is a teenager it wouldn’t be a

product that they would buy.

After making this model I decided

to do more research on existing

Ipod docking station and remake

a model taking different parts of

existing products and putting

them together.

Evaluation: Client & Third Party Opinions

My client specified that:

1. The product must be able to be manufactured to a high standard

2. This product should meet all safety standards and regulations as imposed by several countries.

3. This product should be attractive and easy to operate

4. The product should be reasonably priced

My product has met all of these specifications, as it is manufactured to a standard that is comparable to high street products on the market today. The rigorous quality control and finishing process ensured that the product looked good and also functioned well. As regards to safety, I have incorporated a screw device to enable access to the electronic components to ensure that children are not readily able to access and potentially hazardous components. The wiring and circuitry is also covered with insulation where possible and the circuit securely mounted to the base of the device, to ensure security. In my opinion, the product is aesthetically pleasing and in tests done with members of the public, they were easily able to operate both the hinge device and electronic features (e.g. the lights and speakers). In terms of cost, the product would cost around £5- £8 which means the product would make a good profit if sold for a reasonable price (e.g. £30).

Client Response:

Start.

Surveyor: “Do you think this product is of a satisfactory standard?”

Client: “Yes, I think the product is well made, and aesthetically speaking it has a good look about it.”

Surveyor: “The manufacturer is looking to sell this product for around £30.00, would you purchase this product at this price?”

Client: “£30.00 is a reasonable price for this style of product, it is both competitive with the current products today and I would guess the manufacturer would also make a satisfactory profit!”

Surveyor: “I understand that the product may not be one hundred per cent right, what improvements would you suggest to the manufacturer in order to improve this product?”

Client: “To improve this product, I would advise the manufacturer/ designer to possibly smooth the rectangular panels to a nicer curve, this would probably make it better for both safety and looks. Additionally, I would make the lighting more focused using reflectors, as the light as it is would probably strain my eyes when trying to read etc.”

Surveyor: “Thank you for your time.”

End.

Quality? Price?

Aesthetics? Improvements?

Evaluation • Materials Smooth metal, to prevent scratching the device.

Rubber and wooden parts included. • Cost Between 10GBP – 20GBP • Size/Weight Size, should be fitted exactly for the device. For it to

be stable enough, not too high. Can not be too light for it to be usable. But not to

heavy to keep on shelves and so can be carried easy.

• Safety Use tools safely. Not rush my work, take time. Think

every step before doing it. Comply all safety legislation. • Function Will be used as a stand for an electronic device. Can be used as a dock as the charger can be plugged

in. • Customer iPod users are potential customers, as I am designing

a stand for this particular device. • Ergonomics Can be adjustable. Can be opened and closed. Used

as storage space for a small device underneath. • Resources Be able to make in school workshop with tools

offered.

My product meets all of the aspects I wanted it to have. I have calculated

the approximate cost of the wood and acrylic and the work done and it

will be approximately 10-15GBP, which is less than expected which is

good. Most of the cost will be taken up by the acrylic and the finish

applied, because the materials are quite expensive. This means that the

final product will be able to retail at a cost of 16-25GBP, which is

affordable and not expensive for this type of product, which means it can

get popularity and be a popular good. I was able to test the product with

different types of devices. At first the product was meant to be designed

for a specific device – Apple iPhone 4, but in the process of making I

realized that it would be much useful on the market if it was made

in such way for it to be useful for different mobile devices of about the

same dimensions and weight. I have tested the product for my initial

device, and it turned out to fit perfectly, I have also tested it with such

devices as – iPhone 3G, HTC Hero, Blackberry Bold and Blackberry

Torch and all of the above fit into the acrylic holder perfectly and are able

to be charged while on the holder, so this makes the final product

durable and can be sold as a products for different devices and have

more popularity with buyers.

Evaluation

In my evaluation I think that my table went really well and was a

laugh to make, I think that my table will be suitable for its size and

strong enough. The thing that worries me about the target market is

that not many people will buy my table as they think that it is to small

or either to big,

I have chosen my cost 50 pound in the shops as I had to pay that

amount for my materials. But I am worried that it is to dear for the

size but it is suitable and strong as I have sat on it myself.

I used timber for all of my table to a high standard and make sure

that it is suitable for the objects that I want to use it for and hopefully

it will fit into my corner, I used the timber because It looks good and

completes the table.

This is my final CAD

design that I had

designed.
