ASSURING STUDENTS SAFETY ISSUES

Senior Constable Dinesh Nettur from the Victoria Police Multicultural Liaison Unit gave a presentation to our students outlining the ways in which they can keep safe.

“Melbourne is still one of the safest cities in the world, ”Dinesh emphasized, “but you have to be careful wherever you are.”

Dinesh answered questions from the students who were concerned about their safety and they were pleased to be able to express their views and have good advice and answers from the police.

International students are very important and welcome members of our community and ‘we will do our best to assist them in all areas’.

Stephen Henderson (Gurkhas Director of Studies) invited students to make sure that they communicated any of their difficulties to Gurkhas support staff, trainers or himself.

How is life in Australia as a student ?As a student we have to manage our studies and job at the same time which is quite difficult .

Do you have a job ? Do you contribute to your fee ?Yes I have a job I got this job after 6 months so you can imagine how tough it is to get a job in Australia. Yes I contribute to my fee actually I pay my college fee my self.

Do you think 20 hours of work is enough to ends meet ?It is definitely not enough because most of the students pay their fees themselves and we need to eat as well. The rent and transport adds up as well.

Proceeding Overseas EducationBright future and prosperous life is the aim of every man as selfishness is the nature. As that for our bright future we, the young generations, are seeking overseas education as a medium of quality education, good earning and future settlement in developed nations.

However the reality is quite different from the usual dream that we see from our motherland. What I have observed is that the teaching method is absolutely different from the method that we have back home. There is more practical teaching here than theoretical. It is some kind of child psychological method which is easier to grasp. The design module and teaching method is rather child like here.

On the other hand, life here is not that easy as we passed our unforgettable teenage years back home. We miss our homeland further more we left the duties and responsibilities that sons and daughters are suppose to do in that lap of our old parents. Here we have to struggle hard to sustain ourselves and to maintain every expense including our college fees. As this is a western developed country, everything, the environment, the working method etc are totally different. It seems that the English spoken here is also quite different than the one we were used to, may be because of the Aussie accent. Here it is like an examination period, yet we work hard with the expectation of our golden future.

I have also learned that there is a dignity of labor which lacks in the Asian countries which encourages development.

Personally I would like to suggest to other students that it is not wise to consider foreign countries as dreamlands. Although I have to give them positive views as an overseas student myself but rather I would say, stay in your own country and try to excel in your studies. To come overseas as students seems to be entering the world of economy from the world of education.

Optimism - the best way !Living in Australia as a student is a challenging phase of life. All the students want to earn money along with their studies to get a job is their top most priority. As a lot of money has already been invested when we come to Australia, we don’t wish to give our parents trouble by asking them to financially support us as we are already adults.

I am not being negative but sadly it is the truth. All the students who come from with skills or without skills are doing pretty odd jobs.

There is no doubt that Australia is a good country with all modern facilities and advantages. But the only thing is that there are no jobs for students. To get a good job would mean stability but with no jobs it’s very insecure. I think to get a job itself for students are a big challenge here. Students are getting frustrated day by day because of this reason though students target is not to earn money but to study but if they don’t get a job they will fail to achieve their goal. I would also like to mention that even international students should get concession in transport and discounts. I don’t think that the Australian government does not quite notice what is happening here.

Finally, what I have realized is that living in Australia as a student is kind of a struggle for existence.

Name: Dipak Pokhrel

Challenges & OpportunitiesThere are two thing that are in equal amount in Australia that is challenges and opportunities .immigrates are living happily with the locals here. Hence Australia becomes a multicultural country people living in Australia are really kind to every one and they also respect each others privacy. If you stay away from violence Australia can be a peaceful country. Australia has become very popular to attract migrates from South Asian countries like India, Nepal, Sri Lanka etc.

I think that Australians believe in hard work more than god.It provides people with all kind of opportunities and facilities. Some of them like good transport, quality oriented education ,better and fast medical service etc make Australia an ideal country .the living cost is also affordable.

One of the good things is that we do not have terrorism here .This is one of the reasons that makes it popular too. Australia is developing very fast and so is the employment rate.

Never lose hope !After a long and boring journey on the plane, I finally landed in Melbourne. Like my friends had told me, Melbourne is beautiful but my friends had also warned that in this beautiful city what you get in plenty, is struggle. Likewise struggle was the first lesson that I learned here. As I was new and the fact that I did not know anything added to my misery. I started to look for a job immediately I distributed resumes and did door to door job search. Leaving the house in the morning to look for work and returning in the evening without any became a routine and sometimes the negative responses made me very frustrated. Nervousness and lack of communication were other factors that disturbed me thoroughly.

Finally my hard work was rewarded and I got a job in a restaurant. This really helped me relax and to see the good things in life again.

Planning is a must, it is very difficult to get work here because we are students and most of us do not have experience. The fields we were working before does not count, only experience in Australia counts. If we don’t get jobs to get started how will we have experience. As we are hospitality students it is best to work in the same field.

Lastly, what I would like to mention is that being a student and unskilled is a nightmare but I believe that it is our duty to prove it wrong. Struggle leads to success. Many more challenges are yet to come. What we are facing now is what our seniors have faced, so my advice to you is never lose hope keep on going for the better tomorrow.
