EVIDENCES OF EVOLUTION

EVIDENCES OF EVOLUTIONWe are going to talk about evidences of

evolution.

• One major evidence that we find of organisms have changed over time lies in sedimentary rocks.

• Sedimentary rocks contain fossils. These fossils are evidence that organisms have changed over time.

This image shows an insect which died and mineral in the sediment replace the body with stone

WHAT ARE FOSSILS? Fossils are the remains of once living organisms.

Fossil can be the whole organism or a part of it. HOW ARE THEY FORMED?

1 :- Fossils are mostly formed when sediment covers the dead organism. Minerals in the sediment seep into organism and replace its body with stone.

2 :- Fossils also form when an organism dies and leaves an imprint of itself. Fossils have provided evidence that organism has changed over time.

EXAMPLES OF FOSSILS

EXAMINING ORGANISMSRishi

Peppered MothsPepper moths were earlier of a light colour with a bit of brown spots that helped them camouflage from predators as they would sit on light surfaces before the industrial revolution and only 2% of this species were of a dark brown shade. After the Industrial revolution 95% of the moths showed this colourization as the light moth lost their advantage as the light surfaces were darkened by the pollution.

The skink (Saiphos equalis) is a species of 3 toed yellow bellied lizard found in 'New South Wales, Australia'. These lizards have developed themselves to lay an egg or give a live birth. As these Skinks can do both the reproducing methods they prefer one according to the location. The skinks living on the coastal areas prefer to lay eggs as the climate is always quite warm that helps embryonic development. Whereas, the Skinks living in the cooler mountainous regions prefer to give a live birth as their body temperature is stable which helps the embryo to develop. It is predicted that at some point of time the both of the skinks would evolve into different species because of the different living conditions.

The asian shore crabs have been known to eat mussels. It has been observed that the 'Mussels' only ones living where the asian shore crabs live have developed a thicker shell in order to prevent from being eaten by these crabs.

Mussels

The Shrimp that lost it’s eyescave-dwelling crustaceans such as Shrimps and Crabs live underground where there is no light, and the sense of sight doesn’t do much good. As a result, they’ve gone blind, relying on smell and touch to navigate the cavernous depths. When researchers compared the brains of these spelunkers to their land-dwelling relatives, they found that not only are these creatures sightless, they’re actually losing the parts of their brains associated with vision. Meanwhile, the areas that control touch and smell are getting bigger.

BedbugsWe have been using pesticides to remove bedbugs but it’s found that the bedbugs have started to evolve and their shell has grown thicker and stronger and their nerve cells have also become really strong. Scientists compared and found out that the bedbugs in New York are 250 times stronger than the bedbugs in other places.

The mouse that’s immune to poison

researchers have discovered a house mouse with an immunity to Warfarin, a type of poison typically deployed to fight mice. These mice were discovered in Germany, where the lowly house mouse bred with its poison-resistant distant cousin the Algerian mouse.
