The Oracle Customer’s Best Friend.
2
Managing your Oracle Investment
Effective Software Asset Management
Know what you have deployed, what you are entitled to use, manage compliance and re-
evaluate software licensing models.
3
Taking Inventory
Information Gathering Entitlements:
• Profile current supported licenses• Review and analyze contract terms and conditions
Infrastructure:• Collect and consolidate server data, know your architecture• Software discovery, what has been installed
Data Analysis• Map entitlements to infrastructure to identify potential gaps or
surpluses• Validate usage, true up, baseline established
4
• The customer’s obligation is to– apply applicable licensing to client’s technical infrastructure,– stay informed about new or modified licensing requirements published
on Oracle website,– understand and correctly interpret Oracle licensing,– be able to retrieve the whole history of purchases, license contracts,
licensing publications, etc.,– Manage all licensing requirements at any time to all IT software assets
• If incompliance is discovered, customers must pay a penalty based on list price, plus retrograde maintenance
5
Managing Change
Software environments and requirements evolve, proactive asset management is a necessity:
• Establish a single source to assess license impact, document new purchases, map entitlements and capture change
• Implement policies and procedures to capture infrastructure change
• Implement policies and procedures to capture new software installations
• Reconcile data annually, audit readiness
6
• If any of the points below are relevant to you, then a licence agreement review is needed:
• • Changes to the corporate structure or growth in your workforce as a result from acquisitions, mergers and de-mergers.
• • Misunderstanding or lack of understanding of Oracle’s licensing policies and license agreements.
• • Changes to your IT landscape.• • Implementation of new software products or new business applications.• • Businesses operating with an assortment of license metrics (both obsolete
and current metrics).• • Downloading/installing additional software outside of current license
agreement.

Understanding Policies
Partitioning• Account for physical processors and cores installed when determining
license requirements • Oracle approved hard partitioning technologies allow limits

Licensable Environments• All environments require licensing, few exceptions

Mixed Metrics, Matching QTY, Minimums
*Oracle license policies are subject to change at any time.

Common Errors
• Licensing virtual vs. physical
• Unaccounted environments
• Server data inaccuracy
• Unknown installed software
• Old metrics on current infrastructure
• Downloading w/o license assessment
• Misinformation on contract terms

DB Default InstallationReference the Database Installation Guide for your specific platform and version. Pay close attention to the Oracle Database Post installation Tasks section under Enabling and Disabling Database Options.
By Default the following typically get enabled when you install the Oracle RDBMS software:
Tuning Pack • Database Options/Management Packs Usage Reporting for Oracle Database 11g
Release 2 (Doc ID 1317265.1)• Controlling Diagnostic and Tuning Pack Usage (Doc ID 436386.1)
Advanced Security • How To Check if Oracle Advanced Security Option is Installed ? (Doc ID 549989.1)• Oracle product development has decided that starting with Oracle 11g Oracle
Advanced Security Option will be installed by default when installing Enterprise Edition. There is no way to uninstall or to install it. The reason behind this is that Oracle Advanced Security Options are integrated at network adapter level and it is not appropriate to tweak network adapters after database installation.
Partitioning • Not including the data dictionary partitioning for SYS, SYSTEM, SYSMAN• How to Check and Enable/Disable Oracle Binary Options (Doc ID 948061.1)
11
DB Default InstallationAdvanced Compression
For releases earlier than Oracle Database 11g Release 2 (11.2.0.4): You must license the Oracle Advanced Compression option to use Flashback Data Archive (formerly known as Total Recall).
Beginning with Oracle Database 11g Release 2 (11.2.0.4): You must license the Oracle Advanced Compression option to use Optimization for Flashback Data Archive history tables. Basic Flashback Data Archive—without history table optimization—is available in all editions.
Can The Advanced Compression Option (ACO) Be Disabled Or Uninstalled? (Doc ID 1459216.1) – Currently logged as a BUG with Oracle Development so no way to disable.
All other Oracle DB Options Reference How to Check and Enable/Disable Oracle Binary Options (Doc ID 948061.1) Specifically Check:
• Real Application Clusters (RAC)• Real Application Testing (RAT)• Oracle OLAP
12
Events That Warrant a Review
• Server technology changes
• Introduction of virtualization technologies into the
environment
• Upgrades to new versions of the DB
i.e. 10g->11gR1/R2 or to 12c
• Moving from in house to hosting providers
• Enabling Disaster Recovery
