It isanimpossiblefeat.Attheendofthedaywesuccumbtoexhaustion,andallwecanthinkaboutisfallingintobed.Whohastimetopracticemagic?

In the days of our forefamilies, the practice of magic didn't seem topresent the scheduling dilemma that it does today. Although life took on aslower pace, workloads were just as heavy. For our ancestors, a normal dayinvolved rising early, getting to bed late, and a constant flow of hard, back-breakingwork inbetween.Evenworse, theydidn't have today's technology toprovideworkablesolutionstoeverydayproblems.Asaresult,theyprobablyhadlesssparetimethanwedotoday.Still, theyfoundtimetopracticetheAncientArts.

HowonEarthdidtheydoit?

Our forefamilies saw thepracticeofmagic as a lifestyle rather thananindividualsetofevents.Theywoveitspowerintoeveryfiberoftheirdayanditlivedwithineverybreaththeydrew.Hence,theseparationbetweentheworldsof

the mundane and magical was virtually nonexistent. Every act-cooking,cleaning,plowing,evensleeping-becameamagicaloperationanditscompletionwasareasonforcelebratingtheGods.

Living themagical life isasimplematterof takingafresh lookatwhatmagic isandwhat it isn't.Tostartwith,magic isnotapractice.* It isaliving,breathingwebofenergythat,withourpermission,canencaseoureveryaction.Itisnotanexhaustingprocessanddoesn'tmakeourlivesmoredifficult.Instead, it smoothes our path, increases our energy, and raises our productionlevels.Most important, though,magic isa time-saver. Incorporating it intoourfast-paced, technologically driven lives can cut ourworkloads and provide uswiththeextratimeweneedforfun,rest,andrelaxation.

But how can something so ancientmeshwith a technology-basedworld? The answer is simple.Magical energy relies upon the same force thatsupports much of technology: electricity. A quick refresher course on theElementsandTheirvibratoryforcesgivesusproof.

Amagicalforcethatwecanseeandhearflowsthroughthecoreof theFireElementandgivesIt life.Wesee it in the lithe,dancingmovementof theflameandhearitpopandcrackleonthehearthfire.Becauseitreactssimilarlytoelectricityandholdsapositivecharge,thisforceisknownaselectricalfluid.ItrelatesdirectlytotheexpansionqualitiesofFire.

Whenweworkwith the forces of theElements-a basic to naturalmagic-we put together all the necessary components for static electricity.Whether they know it or not, even themost stringent practitioners of theOldWays, like their forefamilies, work with technological forces. Because theseforces already exist in an underlying fashion, there is nothing to prevent a"surface"combinationbyinvolvingthemdirectlyandallowingthemtohelpusinoureffortstowardsuccessfulmagic.

Constructinganaltarisn'ttheonlywaytocreateamagicalenvironment.Someof themostsacredspaces inmyhomeincludeabookshelfcoveredwithbuilding-blockcastles,alargewoodenspicecabinet,ashelvingunitfilledwithAfricanviolets,andthewallthatfacesmycomputerdesk.

The point is, the working environment you create doesn't have tobroadcast your practices formagical conductivity. The important thing is thatyou feel itspowerwhenyouenter thearea.Feeling thepowermakesyou feelmagical,andthepersonwhofeelsmagicalproducespotentmagic.

MoonPhases

TheMoon exudes a cool, feminine, silvery-feeling energy that rules the life-giving waters of our planet-the rains, tides, and dew-as well as those in thephysicalbody,suchasmenstrualcyclesandotherbodilyfluids.Shealsorulesall emotional responses. ChargingHerbs

Forextrapower,youcancharge theherbsyoudecide touse in spellworkandimbue themwith themagicalpropertiesyoudesire. If youaren't familiarwiththisprocess,trythechargingmethoddescribedbelow.

1.Puttheherbinabowlorsaucer;useonlytheamountnecessaryforthecurrentspell. Put your hands over the dish and feel the energy rising from theplant. Touch the herb with your dominant hand, close your eyes, andconcentrateonyourmagicalneed.

Flowers

Flowers are emotional symbols. We use them to denote specialtransitionaloccasions likebirthdays,weddings,and funerals.Wesend themastokens of well-wishing, love, and appreciation. Flowers evoke a strongemotionalresponsefromhumans,andhumanemotionisthematrixfromwhichall magic flows. Thus, using flowers in magic increases its potency andeffectiveness.

Trees

Trees play an integral role in day-to-day living. From a mundane standpoint,theyprovide shelter from theElements, give comfort in the formof furniture,and produce the oxygen necessary for normal breathing. Trees are also amainstayinmagicalwork.Practitionersusetheirleaves,flowers,roots,andbarkforincensesandoils,andusetheirwoodtoconstructavarietyofmagicaltools.Without them, life-both mundane and magical-as we know it would cease toexist.

Sometimesweareluckyenoughtofindthegiftsofthetreealreadylyingontheground.Moreoftenthannot,though,wefindourselvesharvestingtheir products for magical use. The collection process isn't as simple as justtakingwhatweneed.Treesarelivingcreaturesthateat,drink,breathe,andrest.Like the members of humankind, they communicate and have individualpersonalities. For these reasons, we owe them the same respect andconsiderationwegiveourhumansiblings.

HarvestingfromTrees

The first step towardsuccessfulharvest is to forma relationshipwith the tree.Talktothetreeandtellitsomethingaboutyou.Listenasittalkstoyouandlearnsomethingabout it. In short, treat the relationship just asyouwouldanyothernewfriendship-withrespect,interestandkindness.

The next step is to ask permission to harvest. This is not as silly as itsounds.Considerhowyouwouldfeelifsomeonetookyourbelongingswithoutasking.Thesameistrueofthetree.Itdeservesthesamerespectyouexpectforyourself.Tellthetreeexactlywhatyouwantandwhyyouneedit,thenwaitforananswer.Ifthetreeresists,don'tbealarmed.Theremightbeagoodreasonforitsdecision,suchasillhealth,buginfestation,orsimplybeingunprepared.Forma relationship with another tree, but don't discontinue the friendship with thepresentone.Thereisalwaysroomforonemorefriend,andwhoknowswhatyoumightlearnfromtheoriginalrelationship.

Once the tree grants permission, it is important to consider yourharvestingtechniqueandtimingsoyoudon'tcausethetreeanymorediscomfortthan necessary A sharp knife works well for obtaining leaf, flower, or barkmaterial. If you need to cut branches or limbs, though, try a sawwith freshlysharpened teeth. (Garden shears tend to pinch the branch and hinder futuregrowth.)

With the high availability of suchwonders, wewould never dream ofgoingbacktoconsistentlycookingonawoodstoveor,evenworse,anopenfire.To even suggest such a thing would be absurd. What's more, we use thesedevicestobestservetheneedsofourmostpreciouscommodity-ourfamilies.

Why, then, don'twe use them to increase ourmagical efficiency? It isprobablybecausewegetsocaughtupinthe"ancient"partofthemagicalarts,thatitnevercrossesourminds.Wecontinuallyseekoutobscureobjectstouseasmagicaltoolsbecausewethinkwearesupposedto.Thefactisthatmagicalimplementsdon'thavetobeancienttobeuseful.Theydon'tevenhavetolooklike theritual toolsofold.Theonlypre-requisiteformagical tools is that theyworkefficientlyforthejobswedesignate.

Today'sconvenienceitemshavethecapacitytoincreaseefficiencyinthemagicalhouseholdandcutpreparationtimeinhalf.Usingthesetime-saverswillnot decreasemagical power. Spending less time on aworking does notmeanputting less of yourself into it. Saving time does not mean cutting corners.

Instead,itmeansincreasedproductivityandmoretimeformagicalwork.Ifyouare still concerned about using today's technology for use in themagical arts,here is some food for thought. The mortar and pestle was once a modernconvenience,too.

WhentheEarthwasyoung,grindinggrainandherbswasapainstakinglyslowprocess.Theonlywaytoaccomplishsuchafeatwastorubthesubstancebetween two rocks and hope for the best. Much later, someone invented themortar and pestle, a vast improvement over the earlier method. It allowedportability, grinding ease, and a greater amount of productivity. At the time,folksprobablyviewedthemortarandpestleasamodemconvenience.Didourforefamilies scoff at the new device? Did they refuse to use it because theancient way was better? Did they think it would hamper their magic? No.Obviously, they acquired it andused it. If theyhadn't,wewouldn't thinkof ittodayasoneofourmostvaluableritualtools.

If you decide to use modern appliances for magical purposes, pleaserememberthattheythenbecomemagicaltools.Inotherwords,usingthesameapplianceformixinglovesachetsandfrozenmargaritasisn'tagoodidea(unlessyou are counting more on magic than drink ingredients to pack the intendedwallop).Useappliancesformagicalpurposesonly,andconsecratethemassuch.Ifyoudon'thaveextrasanddon'twanttogiveupyourkitchenappliances,checkatyourlocalsecond-handstoreorthriftshop.Youcanusuallyfindappliancesingoodconditionthereforaverynominalcharge.

TheAutomaticDripCoffeeMaker

The coffee maker is an essential part of my existence for most of the samereasons it is to other folks. I, like a good portion of the population, am not amorningperson.Thefact is,Idon't likeanybodyuntilI'vehadseveralcupsofcoffee.Having towait for itmakesme anunbearablegrump.Fortunately,mycoffeemakerdoesthetrickinthreeminutesflat.Itsspeedgivesmetimetogetmywits together beforemy loved ones-allmorning folks, including the dogs-leapjoyfullyfromtheirbeds.

While the device always provided me with an indispensable service,usingitforsomethingotherthanbrewingcoffeeneveroccurredtomeuntilIhadtoconsecratemyathame.Myroommateatthetimewashavingguestsoverfordinnerandrefusedtoletmeusethestove.Itdidn'tmatterthatIneededanherbalinfusionforaconsecration.Ibegged.Ipleaded.Hedidn'tcare.Hejustwentoncooking. Then he gaveme one of those looks andmuttered something about"...onpainofdeath...."

At the time, I thought he was a real jerk. But his obstinacy, asaggravatingasitwas,broughtwithittherichestofblessings.Itjoltedmeintoacreativemode.Igrabbedacoffeefilter,threwitinthefiltercup,andtossedinthe herbs. I added the water and flipped the switch. Then I chanted theincantation loudly enough to roust the neighbors. The result was a perfectlybalancedbrewthatsimplytingledwithmagicalessence.

The coffee maker not only saves time, but brews flawless infusions,decoctions,andwashes.Hereareafewtipsforusingitinmagicalefforts:

•Donotuse thesamecoffeemaker tobrewboth ingestible teasandpoisonous liquids. If you plan to use the device for brewingwashesthat list ingredients unsuitable for human consumption, obtain onesolelyforthatpurpose.

• Between magical brewings, clean the pot and filter cup with hotsoapywaterandbleach.

Whenbrewingdecoctions,place therootorbarkmaterial inacoffeefilter,thenclosethefiltersecurelybytyingitwithastringorarubberband.Afterthebrewcycle,placethepouchinthebrewpotandleaveitonthewarmingplateforapproximatelythirtyminutes.

Theincidentwithmyroommateforeverchangedmymagicallife.Yes,Idiscovered that using the coffeemaker formagic saves time and aggravation.Butmore important, I realized themeaningofmagic in its truest formand itsrelationship to technology.Magicequals creativity.Creativityequals life.Thismeans that life-how we live it and what we do with it-is the rawest form ofmagic.Thetechnologicalresourcescreatedbyhumankindhaveamagicalltheirown,andincorporatingthemintopersonalmagicbringsanincreaseofpowertoeveryspellperformed.Denying that sourceofmagic is tantamount to refusingmagical assistance and a hindrance to all efforts of enchantment. It all boilsdowntoonething.Ifitworks,useittoyourbestadvantageandbegladforthehelp.

TheBlender

Manyyearsago,Istartedasmallherbalincensebusiness.Theideawastomakean inexpensive, all-natural product that burned efficiently without the aid ofcharcoalblocks.Atfirst,everythingwentsmoothly.Imixedafewherbs,strucka match, and-voila!-instant incense. I wondered why anyone had ever usedcharcoaltostartwith.Itdidn't takelongtofigureitout, though.Igotanorderfora specialtyblend,and the stuff justwouldn'tburnon itsown. Idiscoveredthatsomemixtureseitherrequirecharcoalorabaseingredientforevenburning.

I checked into buying bulk incense base. It wasn't even a possibility.Madeofimportedbamboo,itwastooexpensiveformyneeds.Tomakemattersworse, none of my suppliers had any useable suggestions. In desperation, Ifinallycalledthelocallumberyard.Thatiswhenitoccurredtomethatsawdustmightbeasolution.Evenbetter,Icouldgetitfreeofcharge.

Thrilled,Ibroughthomeadozenlargegarbagebagsofbaseandwenttowork.Thesmileonmyfacedidn'tlastlong,though.Therecipedidn'tburnanybetter thanbefore.Thegrindwas toocoarse and the sawdust took too long tocatchfire.Itriedrefiningitwiththemortarandpestle.Itwasaneffortinfutility.I ran it through a flour sifter. That didn't work, either. The inspiration pooldepleted,Isatdowntothink.

Finally, it occurred tome. If a blender could reduce ice tomere slush,surelyitcouldpowdersawdust.Ifoundthemachine,tossedinafewtablespoonsofwoodshavings,andflipped theswitch.Theresult?Afinerpowder than themostexpensiveincensebasemoneycouldbuy.Myburningproblemswereover.

Today,theblenderisoneofmymostvaluablemagicaltools.Iuseitforevery grinding, powdering, andmixing jobmy oldmortar and pestle used tohandle. It not only out-performs the device, but cuts the preparation timetremendously. Inmybook,anything that saves thatmuch time in today'sbusyworldhasamagicallitsown.

Thefollowingareafewtipsforusingtheblenderasamagicaltool:

• When working with dry ingredients, only add two to threetablespoons at a time. This keeps the appliance motor fromoverheating.

• Always clean the blender between magical mixings. Pour in atablespoonofrubbingalcoholandacupofwater,thenlettheblenderrun for a few seconds. Empty the cup andwipe dry it with a papertowel or cloth. Cleaning in this way removes any herbal oils orextracts,herbalodors,orplantvibrations.Itisagoodwaytokeeptheleftoverenergiesofonemixturefromcombiningwiththenext.

•Whenpowderinggumssuchasdragon'sbloodandgumarabic,addafew drops of rubbing alcohol before you turn the machine on. Thiskeeps the powder fromgumming up around the blades.Don'tworryabout thealcohol. It evaporatesand leavesnovibrationalenergies tointerferewithyourmagicalintent.

•Astheblendergrindsandpowders,focusontheswirlingmixtureandconcentrateonyourintent.

Usingtheblenderasamagical toolcanopenthedoors toawholenewrealm of enchantment. Incense-making is just one idea. Use it for makingmagicalpowders,sachets,potpourris,andanythingelsethatstrikesyourfancy.Itspossibilitiesareaslimitlessasyourimagination.

SlowCookersandElectricPotpourriPots

With the incense-making problems solved, my business blossomed andflourished.Customordersbecameaspecialty,soitwasnosurprisewhenoneofmycustomerscametomewithaproblem.Shewasdisappointedinthequalityof the oils offered by her distributor. They felt sticky and gummy, and, onceapplied,thearomasfaded.ShewantedtoknowwhetherIcouldwhipupabatchofoilstomatchtheincenseproperties.ItoldherIwouldcheckintoitandbegantoresearchtheprocess.

WhatIfoundwasdiscouraging.Someoftheoil-makingprocessestookseveralweeks.Otherstookseveralmonths.SomesuggestedusingtheheatoftheSun, while others insisted upon the use of a cool, dark area. By the time Ifinished poring over the piles of books, Iwas vastly confused.Therewas notonlynoagreementfactor,therewasn'tevenacommonthread.

Afteraweekofexperimentation,Ididdiscoverthatheatreleasednaturalplantoilsmorequicklythancooldarkness.Thearomaswereweak,though,anditlookedlikeitmighttakeamonthortwotoproduceastrongenoughscent.Ididn'thavethatsortoftime.Ineededoils-goodonesandIneededthemquickly.

Afterseveralunsuccessfulstove-topattempts(andworkingwithabunchof other ideas too silly to mention) I tried the slow cooker. The results werephenomenal.Theoilwasstrongandhelditsfragrance.Itdidn'tfeelgummyorsticky.Bestofall,thewholeprocesstooklessthantwenty-fourhours.

Making your own oils in the slow cooker is easier than you mightimagine.Use one part of herbalmixture to one part of vegetable oil, and stirwell.Checktheoileverysixtoeighthoursforscent.Ifthefragranceisn'tstrongenough,straintheoilandaddanotherhelpingofherbs.Repeattheprocessuntilthe oil is to your liking. (A twelve-hour cooking period usually produces anexcellentproduct.)Letcool,strain,bottle,andlabel.

Becausetheprocesstakesseveralhours,youmightwanttoaddachantof intent to charge your oil while it is heating. For example, a chant for apersonal love oil might go something like:

The chant doesn't have to be long or involved to work well. Formaximumeffectiveness,chantwhenfirstaddingthemixturetothepotandagaineverytimeyoustiroraddnewherbs.

•Consecrateyourslowcookerorpotpourripotasamagicaltoolanduseitonlyformagicalpurposes.

•Use the lowest setting available on your appliance. This keeps theherbsfromscorching.

• Use a light, unscented vegetable or fruit oil instead of a glycerin-based product. I like grapeseed oil or jojoba oil for making oils ofquantity. They don't turn rancid like some of the heavier vegetableoils.Foroilsthatyouintendtousequickly,regularcookingoilisfine.

•Whenworkingwithfreshherbs,bruisethemfirsttoreleasetheiroils.Theeasiestway tobruiseherbs is toplace theminaplasticbagand

pound thema few timeswith thesideofyourpalm.Thenempty thecontentsintothepot.

•Keepthelidonthepotexceptwhenyou'recheckingforaroma.Wipethemoisture from the insideof the lidbeforeyouput it backon thepot.

Recipes

The recipes that follow work well for magical powders, sachets, bath salts,potpourris, incenses, and oils. They are not designed for human consumption.Let your nose be the judge when deciding upon ingredient proportions. Thisbringsyourpersonalityintoplayandmakestheblendyourown.

Forpowders,finelygrindtheherbstogetherandaddthemtounscentedtalcorcornstarch.

Allmagic isgovernedby the lawsofkarma.Thisdoesn'tmean thatspellworkcan'tbeenjoyableorfun,onlythatcastingaspellonsomeoneelseistantamountto casting a spell on yourself. Karmic law doesn't work on the equal balancesystem; instead, it returns to you three timeswhatever you send out. Becausemost of us can't stand a triple dose of aggravation, I urge you to consider alloptionscarefullybeforeworkingmagictocontrolorannoysomeoneelse.Withenough planning you can probably find a way to reach your goals withoutrunningthemanipulativemagicgambit.

RippleTheory

Themagicalcauseandeffectsystemisunlikeanyother.Itworksontherippletheory.Agoodway to illustrate this is to throwastone intoapond.After thestone hits itsmark, thewater settles. In its settling, a related yet independentmovement stirs beneath the surface. Ripples appear, radiating outward andencirclingwaterareaspreviouslyunaffectedby theoriginalstone toss.Such isthecasewithmagic.

Keeping this in mind, even a spell for world peace could have itsdrawbacks. Doesthismeanthatallmagicisbadandthatweshouldn'tpracticeatall?No.Itdoesmeanthatweneedtobeabsolutelycertainofwhatwewantbeforebeginning anymagical work and very specific in our requests of the Cosmoswhenwesetaspellintomotion.Evenso,howcanweguaranteethatourmagicwon'tharmsomeone?

One idea is tobindeveryspellwithasafeguardagainstharm.Thisnotonlyprotectsothersfrommagicalfall-out,butalsokeepstheenergyflowofthespelldirectedtowardyourgoal.Ifyouaren'tfamiliarwithbindings,trytheonethatfollows.Itisdirect,tothepoint,andthebestinsuranceIhavefoundagainstharmingothers.

PersonalPower

As magical practitioners, we seldom realize the full extent of our personalpower. In certain instances,magic can reach fruitionwithout the use of propssuchascandles,herbs,stones,orincantations.Itisrare,butitdoeshappen,andastrongemotion(likeanger) isusually thedrivingforce thatbrings themagicinto being. I call this "unconscious magic," because in cases like these thepractitionerdoesn'thavetheslightestideathataspellisinprogress.

Forexample,everytimeoneofmyfriendsgetsmadenoughtocry,weexperienceheavy rainsand thunderstorms. It is lucky for thoseofuswho liveherethathercryingspellsdon'thappenoftenorlastlongandthattheresultingstormshavenevercausedharm,damage,orpopulationevacuation.

Butifyouthinkalittlerainisn'tsobad,considerthis.Anotherfriendofminetookherdogtoatrainer.Thedogwaslovableandintelligent,butstubborn.Thetrainerwasnotusedtodealingwithstubbornanimals,andthetwotookanimmediate dislike to each other. The trainer insisted that the dog was nottrainable,andthepetcamehomeearly,untrainedandskittish.

Days later, thewomantook thedog toanother trainer,only todiscoverthat her pet, previously an excellent retriever, was absolutely terrified of theretrievaldummy.Itdidn't takeagenius tofigureout that inhisfrustration, theoriginaltrainerhadbeatenthedogwithone.

Tosaythatmyfriendwasangryisthesupremeunderstatement.Shewaslivid. Incensed. Positively out of control.Wanting tomake sure that themannever abused another living creature, she explored all options. Knowing thatmagicwasn'tfeasible,shelookedtowardthemundaneforanswers.Butnothingshecouldthinkof-atleast,nothinglegal-seemedharshenough.Finallyrealizingthatshewasinnoframeofmindtotakeanysortofreasonableaction,shewenttobedandresolvedtomakeadecisioninthemorning.

Thenextdaydawnedbrightandsunny.Myfriendwasmuchcalmer.Shedecided to have the trainer's program and facility investigated, and set aboutcollectingphonenumbersfortheproperauthorities.Justasshereachedforthephonetomakethefirstcall,itrang.Thetrainerhadbeenhitbyatruck.Though

the accident wasn't fatal, theman's injuries were serious enough to keep himfromtrainingdogsforawhile.

Coincidence?Itisdoubtful.Thelawsofphysicstellusthereisnosuchthing. "Coincidence" is something we use to excuse life events that we don'tunderstandanddon'twanttodealwith.Themorelikelystoryisthatmyfriend'sconsciousmindwas so inundatedwithdesperation andemotion that theybledovertoherunconsciousmind.Herunconsciousmindsimplytookupthecauseandremediedthesituationforher.

Tokeepthissortofthingfromhappeningwehavetolearntocontrolouremotions insteadofallowing themtocontrolus.This isn'talwayseasy. Ifyouhavetroubleputtingemotionalresponseincheck,involveyourselfinsomething,anything,andtemporarilyremoveyourselffromthesituation.Onceinacalmerframeofmind,gobacktothedilemmaandsetaboutsolvingitsproblems.Afterall,effectiveresolutionandlevel-headednesswalktogether.Justrememberthatyou are themagician, and, as such, nothing is beyond your control, not evenemotionalchaos.
