As promised, this month we take a look back at the ‘Rock Foundation’ Soul Nights, first held back in 1976 at the fore mentioned venue in Little Street, Rushden. For many locals of a certain age these nights were the first step on the path to discovering Northern Soul music. My own introduction to the music (aged 12) was a year or so previous to the ‘Rock’ opening. My older cousin went to Wigan Casino etc. and came back with Northern Soul records. On first hearing them I was hooked! I immediately ditched my Marc Bolan T shirt and was converted. The same year ‘Footsee’ by Wigan’s Chosen Few was on Top Of The Pops, with Northern Soul dancers in the studio performing to the track, wow I was double hooked, they looked so cool. As I remember I demolished plenty of bedroom furniture trying to emulate them (sorry Mum). I hoped over the years the footage would be shown again, maybe on TOTP 2, but have since found out the good old Beeb binned a load of tapes from that era, oh well. If anyone out there has a copy, would love to see it. I now know that at the time a lot of older and wiser Soul fans frowned on the record and the TOTP thing, fearing the ‘underground’ scene might become ‘over ground’ or commercialized as a result, which I can understand, but in its defence, for someone my age it did inspire me to find out more. Anyway in the meantime I proceeded to make an idiot of myself trying to dance to the few Northern Soul records they fea-tured at the Moor Road youth club Disco’s I attended. All very nice and nostalgic Jem! I hear you say “but what about the Rock” Well one of the unique things about the “Rock” was that it didn’t serve alcohol, pop and crisps was as hard as it got, so it meant kids my age could get in, but also bigger boys and girls in their early twenties attended, which for us young un’s made us feel part of a grown up scene, most probably much to the annoyance of the older “cooler cats” I suppose you could have termed the “Rock” a grown up youth club, but that would do it a disservice. You certainly would not hear the records played there at any old youth club. Which I was about to find out. The Rock certainly took me to the next level!

I recently caught up with Rushden’s Andy Luck who along with his cousin John Warren founded and co promoted the “Rock” Soul Nights. He explained, His and John’s first introduction to the venue was via the ‘Barn Dance’ Nights they attended there, run by a guy called ‘Marshall Martin’ (great name) “We got to know him quite well and persuaded him to let us play some of our Soul records during the break” John and Andy got into the music by attending some of the local do’s as well as venturing further a field to places like Coalville Leicester. However a trip to the now legendary “Blackpool Mecca” really turned their heads. The Mecca was only rivalled by Wigan Casino as the UKs number 1 All-Nighter. Some would argue that it was more influential in shaping the scene than the Casino. Andy commented “Wigan focussed more on the 60s oldies style stompers. The Mecca did feature some of these but also fused in some then contemporary 70s rare Soul imports, which were precursors to the later Disco scene” Inspired by their visit they hatched a plan to put on a night locally that reflected what they loved about the Mecca and figured the Rock Foundation would be a great venue. The place was an ideal choice for a Soul Night, an old building with an upstairs dance hall with a small stage, entered via creaking wooden stairs and passage way. The dance floor was a traditional sprung wooden affair, so springy in fact I remember getting told off by DJs when attempting acrobatic dancing, as it made the needle jump on the record. Andy recounted “John was more hands on, setting up and running the night. I tended to book the guest DJ’s many of which were good mates and serious records collectors, including the late Russ (Rug) Bowers, other regular local DJs were Tony Parker, Phil Attley and Sid Clayton. I also pitched in by lending some of my own records to DJs. I never really Deejayed much myself as I was usually busy helping on the door etc. alongside my sister Lesley and Cousin Joy. It may seem crazy now, putting on a night without a bar, but people back then were so genuinely keen and thirsty for the music alone, plus we openly encouraged the teenagers as we figured they would appreciate the more contemporary sounds on offer and they behaved most of the time” Andy reflected “I think we just about got it right, We ran for 3 years every Saturday

Night and usually attracted about 100 people a lot used to come along as a warm up before they set off to the All-Nighter of their choice”. I can attest to that, I personally have fond memories of making my way to the “Bake n Take” fish and chip shop or as we coined it the “Take n Bake” (those chips were a bit under done at times) in Rushden High Street, after the “Rock” to catch a minibus to Peterborough or St. Ives All-Nighter. Andy finished off by saying “We had some great nights there over the years and between us played some really great music, a lot ahead of it’s time and not played elsewhere before, which is one of the things I am most proud of” Andy is still into the music today and gets out and about to do’s up and down the country. He is one of the most understated characters on the scene and back in the day was always happy to take time to listen to my dumb questions and pass his knowledge of the music on. Thanks mate! The Rock foundation building had started to show its age by the late 70s which was one of the reasons the nights finished, John emigrated to Australia in the early 80s where He became involved in the Northern Soul Scene over there. Yes Aus has a vibrant Soul scene! He returned to the UK back in 2007 and celebrated his 50th birthday with a Northern Soul “Rock Foundation” All Dayer at the Pemberton Centre Rushden. He is due another visit back later this year and rumour has it a “Rock” reunion Night could be on the cards. Watch this space! Finally it’s good to see that the Rock Foundation building survived albeit in the form of flats today. I wonder if the residents get the sudden urge to dance around their kitchen on Saturday Night? If only they knew! Back to some more reports on upcoming stuff next month. Just a quick mention: Len Dopson has been in touch and asked us to remind people the next official date for the “Original’ Soul in the Bowl, is Sat. 12th April. Seems there has been a bit of confusion with another event at the Bowls Club, happy to put that straight for you Len. Remember you promoters if you have a Soul event happening then be sure to let me know! In order to mention it I do need the full details and a bit of info about the style of event. Email: [email protected] All the best. See you somewhere Soulful soon! Jem

Tragedy: All Metal Tribute to the Bee Gees and Beyond, has changed the face of music forever. Tragedy takes your favourite Bee Gees, disco and soft-rock classics and reinvents them in a Heavy Metal fashion. The result is aural ecstasy. You may enter the Tragedy experience unaware of your latent appreciation for gooey soft rock or flamboyant metal, but you shall emerge forever humbled by the greatness of Tragedy (and covered in glitter!). Tragedy has sold out venues like Bowery Ballroom, Brooklyn Bowl and Terminal 5 in their hometown of NYC, as well as those in far-away lands such as London, Glasgow, Disneyland, Austin, Boston, DC, Tampa and Guilfest (with Motorhead).

Tragedy has released two critically acclaimed albums: We Rock Sweet Balls and Can Do No Wrong and Humbled By Our Greatness. Production for their third, Death to False Disco-Metal, is underway. "Tragedy manage to dwell in the realm of novelty while far exceeding their worth as a concept ... the aesthetic is somewhere in between the flamboyance of the disco-era Bee Gees and the flamboyance of mid-eighties hair metal, with some extra flamboyance thrown in for the sake of flamboyance."

Tragedy open their European tour with a show at The Athletic Club, Newton Road, Rushden on Wednesday March 12th. Tickets £10.00 are available in person from the club or at www.wegottickets.com that add £1.00 booking fee per ticket.

The Events On Magazine

As a drag bike racer that has raced at Santa Pod Raceway for 15 years, Rushden based Phil Pratt, of PBM Racing, has always had an interest in it’s history when it was home to the 92nd Bombardment Group, and for years wanted to pay trib-ute to the brave Service Personnel known as "Fame's Favored Few".

Whilst looking at the names of the various B-17s which called, what was then, "Station 109" home, one in particular caught our eye - and so the research into "Satan's Lady" from the 325 BS began - research that was to prove difficult, sometimes frustrating, but extremely interesting and rewarding - culminating in the discovery of an article written by one of her crew which documented her final mission.

Back in July last year one of our fellow racers put us in touch with David Earl (www.airbrushearl.com ) who had done the amazing artwork on his "Spirit of Drag Racing" car, and he agreed to take on the job of bringing "Satan's Lady" back to life. After the initial designs were put down on paper, tweaked, tweaked some more and then finalised, the panels were taken to David who started with the, no-doubt mind numbing, task of airbrushing hundreds of rivets!!

Keeping to the era - when aircraft arrived without markings and were then "personalised" by their crews - David has painstakingly hand painted all of the various Squadron emblems, lettering and detailing, to give our modern day "Lady" the true authentic feel.

We know the nose art isn’t exact - we dug and dug but we just couldn’t find a photograph which clearly showed the lady, but we’d like to think that the modern take on her is acceptable!!

We've also compiled an information board about the 92nd Bombardment Group, along with leaflets containing the amazing story of the final mission of "Satan's Lady" - a mission worthy of a Hollywood blockbuster - which we'll be giving away from the PBM Racing pits, so that racers and race fans can find out more about those who called Santa Pod Raceway home long before we discovered it.

PBM Racing Fire Up Satan’s Lady,

Seventy Years On.

We're really excited to be bringing "Satan's Lady" back out onto the same runway which she flew from 70 years ago - and we really hope that we’ve come up with a fitting tribute to the 92nd Bombardment Group.

Our inspiration - The original "Satan's Lady" B-17G 44-6101 with her crew at Station 109 - now Santa Pod Raceway

Hartford, CT Rushden's Phil Pratt, of PBM Racing, began Drag Racing competitively in 2000 and in that first season he achieved his first win – at the biggest event of the year, the European Finals - finished runner-up in the Championship,

and picked up the “Most Promising Newcomer” award... and that was just the start!

Now in his 14th year of competitive racing, and many trophies later, Phil is still campaigning the trusty K3 Suzuki GSXR 1000 which he switched to in 2007. The bike still has the stock motor but has been fitted with a MRE Air Shifter, to assist with swift gear changes, and a “one off” Exhaust System manufactured by Green Hill Racing. The bike has also been lowered, lengthened, and has a custom made swing arm.

In September 2012, running without the aid of any power adders such as Nitrous or a Turbo, and on normal unleaded fuel, with just 150bhp, Phil became the first racer in the UK to take a stock motored, naturally aspirated, 1 litre bike into the 8 second bracket – running 8.974 seconds at 152.6 mph from a standing start on the quarter mile at Shakespeare County Raceway into a headwind!

This coming race season will see Phil competing in the 9.50 Bike class at:

Formed in a garden shed in Kettering, Eyes Wide Open have grown into a well established band fit for all occasions. The energy and passion they put into a show is second to none.

Priding themselves on entertaining the crowd and involving them in every performance, whether its dancing along to their "dad dancing" songs or clapping in the right places, (sometimes)

EWO will be sure to make your night one to remember. EWO play across the counties

including Northants, Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire.

Their highlights so far have been performing in The Warren's (Kettering) outdoor charity events which raised a huge amount of money, and their regular New Year's Eve Party over in Milton Keynes which has been going strong for 3 years.

The backbone of the band have known each other for years explaining their togetherness and tightness. As musicians they constantly learn new styles and that all important new guitar riff or drum lick to really give them an edge. EWO also put their own stamp on songs to separate them from the rest.

A team of close friends will be putting themselves through the ultimate test of endurance, physical and mental strength of one of the toughest events on the planet. And they will be doing three events to raise money for my blind daughter.

They are:Tough Mudder London, Tough Mudder Midlands-10-12 mile obstacle courses designed by Special Forces to test your all around strength, stamina, determination, and camaraderie. Pain and Suffering-10 miles of unforgiving terrain, 35+ obstacles of natural and very unnatural design, Rockingham Castle’s Great Park has what it takes to break even the fittest of competitors. All In aid of raising money for little Miah to attend The Foundation For Retinal Research conference in America that could cure her of blindness and give her sight. Please read below if you wish to know more about Miah and why these wonderful men are willing to try to help her.

Miah is a 7 year old blind child. She was diagnosed at the age of 1 of a rare condition called lebers congenital amaurosis that has caused her to go completely blind. She is a very bright and talented little girl who loves the normal things that any child likes to do. But unfortunately cannot do as many due to her blindness. Every day life for her can be a challenge but with the support and love from family, friends, school and her support workers she can accomplish many tasks in her everyday world. Once every two years the TFRR hold a conference in America. To which they offer a lot of help and knowledge in regards to Miahs condition. They offer testing to find what gene is causing the sight loss and much more. The conference can be the solution to bringing sight back to a

blind child. She could possibly one day see again and see the wonders of the world.

For more info on Miah's condition please visit, www.tfrr.org/index.php?m=19

Club 2000 Reborn in Corby and Castle Mountain Promotions are also holding an event Rock In Fusion on Saturday march 22nd to help raise funds for Miah. Your donations or attendance at Rock In Fusion can help Miah have the normal life she deserves. Events On wish the competitors and organisers every success on the days in question.
