08 The Events On Magazine

We kick of this month with a look back at two events that took place over December and January. Firstly the Wigan Casino Anniversary Night, held on 21st December at the Pemberton Centre Rushden was a fantastic and poignant event, over 250 people from near and far came along to celebrate 40 years of The Casino first opening it’s doors, original Wigan Dj Dave Evison was the special guest on the night and was overwhelmed by the support and warmth showed by ‘The Pembo’ crowd. The management team at the Pemberton were very impressed and it looks like the December date will see an annual ‘Big Northern Soul Night’ there…more news on this to come. Secondly the first of 2014s Soul in the Bowl (2 rooms of Soul) event at the Bowls Club Rushden happened on 11th January. For those that read last months Soul’in Around you will remember the Len Dopson profile. Len is one of the people behind the Soul in the Bowl nights and got in touch to say that despite fears January’s event could be a bit quiet due to the time of the year, it succeeded expectations and was close on 300 people attending again. Len would like to pass on his thanks to those that came from as far a field as Dorset, Shropshire, London and closer to home. The next Soul in the Bowl is on Sat. 12th April, before that though there is a one off ‘Soul in the Bowl Special’ on Friday 14th March which is incorporating ‘Soul in the Bowl ‘ local regular Ez Morgan’s 60th Birthday bash. All the Regular Bowl Djs will be performing in one room and even better it’s FREE to get in, all regulars welcome! We haven’t quite finished with Rushden yet, next months Soul’in around will feature a look back at the ‘Rock Foundation’ Northern

Soul Nights, these were held at the afore mentioned Club in Rock Street Rushden, during the mid seventies and for many locals (including myself) was their introduction to proper Soul music and their first step on the path of the scene. We will be speaking with local man Andy Luck who was one of the promoters behind the event to get the full story! OK onto other upcoming stuff going on around the county. First off ‘Patch’ Brown has been in touch to tell us about a brand new night in Raunds, billed as ‘Chilled Soul’ a Night of ‘Jazzy Vibes & Funky Grooves’ its held at ‘Espresso’s Cof-fee Bar & Lounge, 43 Brook Street Raunds NN9 6LL on Sat. 8TH February admission is FREE! And it runs from 8pm to 12 midnight. Djs are Patch, Ade and Mart. If Jazz Funk and 70s 80s Modern Grooves is your bag then I recommend you get along, would be there myself guys but booked elsewhere, will be at the next one, best of luck with this! For more info on the event call: 07964 384 703. Long time Kettering promoters, Marco Martenelli & Karl Boddington. Make history in the county on Saturday 29th March by holding the first Soul Allnighter in over 35 years! It takes place at Kettering Athletic Club, Rocking-ham Road, Kettering NN16 9AE. It runs from 8pm through to 6am the next day. There will be two rooms offering, Classic Northern Soul, Rare & Modern Soul with over a dozen Djs performing. Admission is £10.00 o.t.d. Well done for getting this together boy’s! Hope all goes well, we will feature a looks back on this, in the meantime if you need more info on the event Karl can be contacted on 07739 799 010.

Lastly we mentioned a while back the Wellinborough Alldayer (now to be a Weekender) at the Castle Theatre. Promoter Kev Bourne has asked us to remind you to get your tickets for the event as early as possible to avoid disappointment, as the last two years have sold out! As we reported the event will now be held as a ‘Weekender’ (again a first for the County!) Over the 15th, 16th and 17th of August, with 45 Djs spread over 5 rooms playing Northern, Rare, Motown and Mod, with an expected audience of up to a 1000 people throughout the week end. This truly is a colossal event not just for Northants but the UK. Prices are as follows: In Advance, weekend pass £15.00, Friday & Saturday pass £10.00 Sunday pass £7.00 also there will be a limited amount of Saturday only pay on the door at £12.50 subject to availability Ticket Hotline 01933 441281 or 07967 520 388. Kev also runs Soul themed trips abroad to such places as Spain and Mauritius and his website www.freewebs.com/soulinthehind , is worth a visit. It has information on all his events/ trips and many others going on locally and up and down the country, plus loads of soul related stuff. Check it out! Well that’s all folks! For this month, think you will agree some really great Soul Stuff happening in little old Northants this year. I would go as far to say, we are the most soul-ful County north of Watford (probably) All the best, See You Somewhere Soulful Soon …Jem Don’t forget keep that info coming contact: [email protected]

The Horseshoe Inn reopened on 24th January after a major joint investment of £140,000 by new licensees Debbie Dexter and Punch Taverns, one of the UK’s leading pub companies. Situated on Sheep Street, the pub was closed for three weeks whilst a refurbishment was carried out. As a result, the investment will create several new jobs.

Inside, the pub has been redecorated in a modern and contemporary style with feature wallpaper, as well as traditional elements to retain the authentic pub feel and sports atmosphere.

Debbie, who previously managed the pub for 9 years, is excited about the reopening: “After almost a decade managing the Horseshoe, I know the pub inside out and wanted to take the leap and run it as my own. The pub looks fantastic and I can’t believe the transformation. It looks totally different with the stylish décor and brighter appearance. The investment will cater for different markets with the new facilities to offer hot drinks and light snacks, such as paninis and baguettes, in the day, whilst building on our reputation for live sports and live music in the evening. The team and

I look forward to the reopening and welcoming some old and new faces back to the pub to celebrate the new look with us.” The pub’s entertainment schedule was kicked off with a performance by

‘Camouflage’ on Friday 24th January.

Punch Taverns’ Partnership Development Manager, Julian Searle, added “It’s great that Punch can invest in our pubs and we essentially want to reposition the Horseshoe as a leading daytime and evening venue, providing great drinks and entertainment for residents and visitors to Wellingborough. Everyone is really pleased with the transformation and the launch night was busy with local residents eager to see the pub’s new look.”

The Horseshoe is situated at 36 Sheep Street, Wellingborough NN8 1BS.

Wellingborough Pub Opens After Refurbishment.

Northamptonshire boast one of the oldest magicians clubs in the country that has existed in one form or another since the mid 1920’s.

Sherree and I joined club president David Miller, who was keeping his eye on the technical performance, to judge the Northamptonshire Magicians Club competition at The Parsons Hall in Irchester on Tuesday 21st January. Five local magicians gave their best in an attempt to win the club trophy as magician of the year in front of a very enthusiastic audience.

The competition was keenly fought with the performers showing a mix of classic magic and what has, over the last few year become a popular phenomenon, mind control, following in the footsteps of Derren Brown, David Blaine and the TV’s current hot property Dynamo.

Kevin Burke kicked of proceedings kicked of proceedings with a vibrant and energetic routine using 5 members of the audience to good effect in a mind reading act to find the red marble. Kevin used his 30 years experience in the business to keep the audience entertained and guessing until the end.

Next up was Royston who bamboozled us all with his ability to get handkerchiefs to untie themselves off of a piece of rope in front of our very eyes, I could not see how it was done and I was just a few feet away.

The next young man turned out to be the runner up on the evening, Jamie Docherty from Kettering. Jamie first showed an interest in magic at a very young age when receiving a magic set for Christmas. He practised all of the tricks in the set, and an aspiring magician was born. Moving on from the magic sets, Jamie practised a small series of tricks and performed at family parties and

get togethers, which he thoroughly enjoyed doing. Jamie has now been performing magic at a professional level for a number of years and has performed to many people in many places, including performances to the RAF and the Police Force. He closed his act with an illusion I have seen done on the television, but never performed live. Asking a member of the audience to hide a very sharp metal spike under one of five polystyrene cups while he had his back turned. He then proceeded to smash the cups with the palm of his hand with some force, so much so that I knew if he got it wrong we would need a plaster and smear of germolene! (Ask your granny) Needless to say no blood was spilled but it was very well presented and edge of the seat entertainment. A well deserved runner up.

Next up was Graham Sargeant. Now anyone that can convince the room that his audience stooge is holding three invisible animals is ok in my books. Graham’s comical approach was very good and had me chuckling and the end result of producing the right colour collar for an invisible cat was clever. I am assured that no invisible animals were harmed during the performance.

Now, while the running order was arranged by drawing straws it did turn out that the last man standing turned out to be the winner. You know sometimes when you meet someone you think you may have met them before but don’t know where? That is exactly how we felt about the final act Mark Shortland. I have to say it was one of the finest peaces of live entertainment I have ever seen, and from about three yards away. From the word go Mark was in control, funny and obviously a master of his craft. His act included his own super hero character Magic Boy and at one point you feared a visit to Specsavers was on the cards for his audience ‘volunteer’. I won’t go in to details because if you like being mystified and made to laugh then get to a show containing Mark Shortland. We Googled Mark when we got home, he had appeared with Jonathan Ross as his assistant on a show with Penn and Teller a couple of years ago, that is where we knew him from!

We and the whole audience certainly enjoyed the evening, it was so well received the club hope to make it an annual event at the venue.

Northamptonshire Magicians Club hold regular meetings at The Yeoman Of Old England In Wooton, with speakers and workshops. If you would like more details visit their website at northamptonshiremagicians.com

Charity families and supporters enjoyed a weekend away before Christmas at Butlins and the short break provided many smiles along the way.

A coach courtesy of Country Lion paid for by Scott Bader picked up families in Northampton on December 19th and took the families on a magical festive break at Butlins in Skegness sponsored by Bold Dragoon Cricket Club. The sponsors enabled 17 families to enjoy the Christmas Fantasy Break at Butlins, and a jam packed programme of entertainment was enjoyed by the charity children their grandparents, mums and dads, siblings and supporters who went on the trip.

The families enjoyed all the entertainment, leisure facilities and festive fun including ice skating and a visit by Santa, Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, and Elmo. Chief Executive Officer for the NC TLC Trust, Janet Walker-Smith said: “A total of 17 families went on the trip meaning a total of 72 of us enjoyed fun and frolics.

“We must say a huge thank you to Country lion for the coach paid for by Scott Bader and to Bold Dragoon Cricket Club for raising the £5,000 needed to pay for the trip, and lots of fun was had by all.” She added: “For some it provided much needed respite for the families who have gone through or are still going through a lot with their children who are suffering and undergoing treatment. So thank you again to all that made the trip possible and also made it a huge success.”

The Kilimanjaro challengers are making final preparations ahead of their climb on Feb 21st.

A team of nine will be taking on the mammoth challenge from February 21 until 5 March and afterwards will be helping out at a community project at a local village in Africa followed by a two day Safari. The NC TLC Trust’s Events Coordinator, Gemma Martin is just one member of the team taking on this once in a lifetime challenge. Gemma said: “Kilimanjaro here we come! We have our final group of 9, ready to face the challenging Kilimanjaro!

“The team have all worked so hard to get ready for the Charity’s biggest challenge yet! From fundraisers which has involved manikins, shaven heads, band nights and Halloween fright nights to long country walks and major gym work outs.

She added: “We aim to raise £20,000 - no words can describe how much this donation will help the children of our charity and their families. People can still support our climbers by going to goldengiving.com and searching for the NC TLC Trust. We would like to thank everyone who has supported this event and of course our amazing climbers!”

Please show support for the team’s efforts by donating at www.goldengiving.com or call the charity office on (01604) 811025 and visit the website for more information on the challenge and the charity work at www.nctlctrust.com
