An exhibition to show how the gas flow through an engine looks in three dimensions and how minute changes to the flow regimes affect turbulence and combustion efficiency.

Students have modelled the gas-flow in a semi-solid compound and imported their models into 3D computer software to see how the flow behaves and what happens when you change the boundaries.

In the light of the recent attacks in Paris the subject of extremism is once again in the news, prompting serious questions. How should we respond? What drove the attackers? And how can we prevent future attacks?

In this talk, part of our Public Lecture Series, Dr Phil Henry will consider what can be done to tackle violent and non-violent extremism.

Dr Henry is a sociologist with special interests in policy, politics and religion. He is also the Director of the Multi-Faith Centre at the University of Derby, which exists to promote mutual understanding between people of different faiths and beliefs and to build respect between people as fellow human beings.

‘The Beauty of Books’ is an exhibition celebrating the art of the book. This exhibition, featuring members of Green Door Printmaking Studio, aims to demonstrate the numerous hand-printed periphery which traditionally surround books.

A bookplate is a small decorative, often hand- printed, label which is pasted into the flyleaf of a book. The practise of using bookplates can be dated as far back to the reign of Amenophis III in ancient Egypt.

This exhibition will also showcase a selection of books created by members of the studio and invited artists. They will also host talks and taster workshops related to bookmaking, culminating in a celebration of Green Door’s 10th birthday.

Think for a moment about the word ‘voice’, what is it to have a voice? And, how does one, ‘raise your voice’?

When thinking about the word ‘voice’, I encountered the word ‘infant’. Infant comes from Latin and means, ‘unable to speak’, or ‘without a voice’. I then considered other usages, i.e. infantry: these are the foot soldiers who have no say in what happens to them. Or, infant: a child who has not yet learned to speak the ‘Mother Tongue’, not yet participating in the ‘Symbolic Order’.

Infantalises is a word I hear more and more these days in relation to education, society, culture and politics. How do we become infantalised? Voiceless. Silenced.

The photographers in this exhibition are finding their voices, and we should take the time to listen.
