FORMAT International Photography Festival

Friday 13 March to Sunday 12 April 2015

This year the UK’s most significant photography biennale will be curated around the theme of EVIDENCE. On a daily basis we use photography to record our lives, routines, friends and encounters. Every two minutes, we take as many photos as the entirety of humanity took during the 1800s.

Through a selection of the best international photography in a diverse programme of exhibitions and events FORMAT will make sense of our complex world and its connection to EVIDENCE and the still image, in a multitude of inspiring ways.

Lecture: A new landscape for England Thursday 28 May 2015, 6pm

A new landscape for England: the first quarter of a century of The National Forest, with reflections on leadership by trees, compared with leadership by people.

From 2006 to 2014, Sophie Churchill OBE led the creation of The National Forest, a new forested landscape for England stretching across 200 square miles and including parts of Derbyshire. Forest cover has trebled and many hectares scarred by mining have been made beautiful, bringing social and economic regeneration in their wake. In her lecture she will reflect on what has made a successful project and a model of leadership which goes with the grain (and trunk, and branches) of the context in which leadership is exercised.

Talk: James Daunt, Managing Director at WaterstonesWednesday 3 June, 5.30pm to 6.30pm

James Daunt founded his own independent bookshop, Daunt Books, in London in 1990. This had grown to seven shops by the time he was appointed Managing Director of Waterstones in July 2011.

The last four years have been a challenging journey for Waterstones and there is still a lot of work to do, but book sales have started to grow again and Waterstones is now a (modestly) profitable business.

In this Derby Book Festival event, James Daunt talks about how this has been achieved and what the future holds for bookshops – and for books themselves.

Tickets cost £8 and will go on sale from the Derby Book Festival Box Office at QUAD from 23 April
